Education / Re: Reasons Why Schools Can't Remain Closed In Nigeria by fratermathy(m): 10:16am On Jul 11, 2020 |
These are recent photos from a private lesson somewhere in the South (a very rural community). I know many of us have seen similar stuffs too across the country. Some do it at the street level. Lessons have been going on like this for months now and no child has died. Where are the fears coming from exactly? I don't blame those organising the lessons because they have to survive. However, the government has to realise that they can't stop private lessons like this from holding and if they do hold, it defeats their mantra of protecting children from exposure. They may protect the children better if schools are open with better precautions. 1 Like

Education / Reasons Why Schools Can't Remain Closed In Nigeria by fratermathy(m): 8:04pm On Jul 10, 2020 |
There is no doubt that there are genuine reasons why schools should be closed in Nigeria. In fact, I agree with many of the arguments that people have made to defend this. However, there are many factors that must be considered before we conclude the matter. I'll just itemise them: 1. Covid-19 has no cure or vaccine and even if one comes up tomorrow, it'll realistically take more than 3 years to reach up to 30% of the Nigerian population. Corona is here to stay. There's no future utopia where the virus magically disappears. 2. Social distancing doesn't work in Nigeria. I don't know about your location but in mine, people go about their normal lives and there's nothing anyone can do about it. The children are still playing with their mates every day. Parents go to work and markets and may likely import the virus to their homes. 3. Children still go to churches or mosques (which are open in most places). Religious and social gatherings are known super spreaders of the virus. 4. So far, children are nowhere near vulnerable as far as Covid-19 is concerned. While this argument can be upended, it is a strong factor nonetheless. Children are not so much in danger as their teachers and the teachers are mature enough to protect themselves adequately. 5. Students in public schools in remote and riverine areas are struggling and therefore may face certain learning challenges if they stay out of school for too long. Many may lose interest in schools altogether. I have been to these places and I know how averse they are to education. Many simply go to school because their mates are going. Should they stay home for long periods, they may likely never resume whenever schools open (which, going by the logic of some concerns, can take more than 2 years). 6. Private school teachers have not been paid for months because, unlike the public sector, they have to work before they are paid. Furthermore, many of them have been organising lessons for miserly wages (this also contradicts why schools should be closed). Indeed, many of those who want schools to remain closed have means of educating their children effectively, forgetting the fisherman's child in Oporoza who either goes to school or hunts for bait worms. 7. Once again, corona is here to stay. There are many workarounds that can be easily adopted to curtail populated classrooms. We must either accept the reality of Covid-19 or simply all remain at home - no markets, malls, churches, mosques, work etc because no one is better or worse than schools as far as the virus is concerned. If you can afford homeschooling or online learning for your children, you should definitely go for it. However, what is good for Bernard is not necessarily good for Benetutukayo and it is nobody's fault that we have an irresponsible government that can't provide adequate infrastructure for times like this. I am a realist in matters like this but there are factors that policy makers must consider even if schools must remain closed. Until the factors are appropriately pictured, we may be doing more harm due to our inability to see the wider picture. There are reasons why the lockdown didn't last in Nigeria. These are the same reasons why schools can't remain closed indefinitely. Cc: Seun, lalasticlala 7 Likes 1 Share |

ditha: Partaking in remote classes is not the issue. You must have your study permit or LOI for that gamble to favour you, except you intend to complete the entire degree online. If you have the above, you can easily get a 4G data bundle and use zoom seamlessly. Your University's online library can give you the articles and books that you'll need. A typical zoom class will take between 300mb-600mb (could be more). Then factor in electricity and a good device (laptop is better). If you can risk it, then go for it. 4 Likes |

Unfortunately, they have limited choices here. The world is already learning to live with the virus. No one should be deceived that a magical cure or vaccine will come any time soon. Even if that's the case, it'll take years for more than 60% of the population to be vaccinated. The more we lockdown, the more the cases will soar because people are already exposed as it stands and lockdowns seldom work well in this part of the world, especially without palliatives and basic amenities. Only those who are profiting from the lockdown in one way or another will wish for it to continue. It is good for us to be careful but caging us again after all these months is unproductive. We must learn to live with the virus. Some may become very sick and a few may die but many will survive unscathed. This is how we live with malaria, typhoid, and many other infectious diseases too. 7 Likes 1 Share |

Frankrobbn1: I don't think that the ban on international flights is affecting the operations of VFS in Lagos or Abuja. They are probably trying to put things in place for safe reopening. They'll likely reopen this month. What may hinder their plans, I think, is the ban on interstate movement in Nigeria. |

roselex: PhD is almost always funded. However, entry requirements are stringent and admission rate is very low. There is serious competition for limited spaces. You don't need to write any exam. However you should be prepared to have these as minimum qualifications: CGPA for first degree: Above 4.00 (especially in the last two years of study) Grade for Masters degree: Above 65% or 4.30 You also need a great proposal in addition to the above. You may need to secure a supervisor yourself too, depending on the school and your department. You also need great letters of recommendation. Not those empty letters that we write here but something detailed and personal. Having published papers will give you an advantage. However, with or without publications, you may need to submit a writing sample and whatever you submit should be superb. 1 Like 4 Shares |

Nyenyenwq: Congrats on your admission to the University of Saskatchewan. On this thread, we have PhD intakes for fall semester to Concordia University, McGill University and MUN (all with full funding). Your funding is more than enough. You will, however, attach your personal statement of account but it won't be used to assess your application since you have funding. Funding usually makes visa application easier. What department were you admitted into? What's the total funding you received? 1 Like |

SonOfaNobody: Do you need sponsorship after your funding? NO. Just submit your account statement if you're working. If your intention is to state that your uncle will pay your flight or accommodation fees, then let him transfer the money to your account and you'll indicate such in your SOP. Congrats on your admission. |

Akannitommy: You don't need any test of English language, especially when you schooled in the US! Even those of us that schooled in Nigeria are not required to do it. Just focus on your Statement of Purpose. Your English language abilities will be assessed by the VOs with that document. The Canadian school that offered you admission has already assessed your English using your writing sample and statement of purpose. 1 Like |

Damilare68: You should attach your statement of account even if you have only N50 inside. Since you have funding, your application will be straightforward. However, if you are married or have dependents in Nigeria, you have to show proof that they'll be taken care of in your absence and if they're going with you, you should provide additional proof that you can take care of them there. Congrats on your admission though. I'm also going to Montreal for a funded PhD. Have you applied for your CAQ? |
