Noms11: You must be among the first Nigerians to receive an AIP this month. After the initial AIP waves of late July/early August, things went quiet, at least on Nairaland. Glad to know that things may be moving along again. 4 Likes |

nayo10: Have you gotten an AIP or Medical Request? If I remember correctly, "recommend interview" simply means that a senior VO will review your file. The VO who assessed it initially has some concerns, hence the interview recommendation. However, the senior VO will use his discretion to make a final decision since we don't have interviews in Nigeria. They may also request further documentation if necessary to complete assessment. Others may shed further light on this. 2 Likes |

These are interesting protocols that could work if implemented well. We must all learn to live with Covid-19. I just hope that countries like Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, among others, will open their borders with similar protocols. Many international students are currently stranded as it is. 4 Likes |
Culture / Re: How Real Are Things Like 'Odeshí', 'Juju', 'Otumorkpor' In Nigeria/Africa? by fratermathy(m): 3:22pm On Sep 05, 2020 |
I am not saying that juju exists or it doesn't. I do not agree or disagree with whatever I have not truly seen in action. In all my years, I am yet to actually see a verifiable instance of such juju actually working. I only hear stories and anecdotes. Since I cannot verify the efficacy of juju, I cannot say if it exists or not. However, if it does exist, why haven't we all seen objective proof of its existence, especially in this day and age when things can easily land on the internet? 90 Likes 5 Shares |

The image below answers many questions concerning those Pakistanis who got AIPs and later got refusals. I wonder why IRCC would make such an error though. This message was sent to the CIC accounts of some Pakistani applicants who had earlier gotten an AIP. So far, the issue seems restricted to only Pakistani applicants. I haven't seen persons from other nationalities with this issue. 1 Like

heidepaper: You can't determine the length of your study permit. Simply input the start and end dates for your program. IRCC will determine how long your permit would last. Study permits can always be extended from inside Canada so you shouldn't worry about that. 1 Like |

gbadeolu1: With the exception of full tuition waivers, all fully funded PhD students are expected to pay tuition from their funding. The calculation of $1750 pm doesn't apply to you. Remove your tuition of $7000 from the funding and calculate the rest as your living expenses. This would amount to $14,000. That amount is still within the expected range. As for actually paying your tuition, most schools have the option of "deferring tuition" for award recipients. It works seamlessly and you'll be able to pay once the money is lodged in your student account by the department. For study permit application, simply attach your proof of funding and your personal statement of account (don't worry too much if you don't have a lot of money in it). You'll be just fine. 1 Like 1 Share |

ConradAce1: You're right. However, Montreal, which is the capital of Quebec, has historic Anglophone areas and these are located around the Downtown. I wouldn't advise someone who doesn't speak French to school anywhere in Quebec apart from Montreal. However, if you are a fast learner and have an aptitude for language, you can cope. There are some Nigerians in Laval and Sherbrooke and they are doing just fine. 1 Like |

vibrant99: Very good points, especially on the schools. We hardly see discussions on UBC, uToronto, uVictoria, McGill, McMaster and Western here. Those schools, though relatively more expensive, tend to have fewer rejected applicants. However, getting into them is a subject for another day. As for regions, Nigerians are flooding Ontario and Newfoundland. What happened to Quebec, Yukon, New Brunswick, etc? After all, there are even colleges in the Northwest territories. 2 Likes |

Prettyshim: It's not a problem as long as your surname is consistent and your other names are all there. You don't have to get an affidavit or anything if you have something like: Johnson, Lucy Ada Or Johnson, Ada Lucy Notice that Johnson remains consistent as surname. However, if Johnson changes roles and is used as first or middle name then you should swear an affidavit. Also, if one of your given names is omitted in one document, that is also fine. As long as all your names are on your passport. 1 Like |

Frankrobbn1: Avoid the use of the word "accurate". You are only speculating, sir. There's nothing accurate about speculations. You may be right or you may not. Only time will tell. You are correct that an AIP is not a Study Permit and I think all applicants know that. Every other thing you've said about the AIP is not accurate. They are simply informed guesses. 6 Likes 1 Share |

Eilenora: Many persons derive pleasure in casting their gloom or negativity on others. You must arm yourself with a mental shield if you don't want to kill yourself over uncontrollable factors. As far as the current situation is concerned, NO ONE ON THIS THREAD or even OFFLINE can say anything with certainty. What we are experiencing is unprecedented. Not even the best immigration experts can advise properly because there is no basis for such an advice. We are only left with our intuition and communication. We must learn to filter the things we hear except we are 100% certain of them or we just want to "move along with it". 1 Like |

So much bad blood on this thread over nothing. No one is forcing anyone to believe anything or pay any tuition here. While some persons may appear knowledgeable based on their experience here, they are still speculating. In every speculation, there is more than 50% chance that they are wrong. As long as no one here works for the IRCC, we should all express our opinions and let things slide. People will do whatever they want to do anyway. Let's all relax and learn to celebrate our little victories, however short-lived. AIP or no AIP, those who will get their SPs will get them. Those who will not, will not. These things are beyond our control and permutations. Tensions are rising for everyone but ultimately, we gamble with uncertain odds and hope that they will be in our favour. 3 Likes |

dommakavelli: People rationalise too much. No one is a VO here and people shouldn't cast their gloom upon others. Many are content with starting their programs with an AIP. Others will defer. We don't have to make the AIP a subject of too much debate. Some have it, many others do not. One thing is certain in this: the fastest way for any country to improve her economy is to open her borders. Canada has not done that yet. It is also clear that with or without the AIP, students are deferring and IRCC is aware of this. Nobody is baiting anyone. They are doing what they can. Applicants should also do what they want. Personally, I'll advise anyone who has the AIP to start online (especially those in programs that will be completed in 2 or more years). Covid-19 won't go away by next year. Some of these restrictions or hybrid instruction models will still be there. No one can divine what the future will be. Many may choose the negative side of things for one reason or another but I'd rather err on the positive side of things. We are not in normal times. Any progress should be accepted. To all those starting their programs online as from today, I wish you good luck in everything. Many of us across the world will do same because we know the value of education. May the odds be in your favour! 10 Likes |

Lekiboboe: It is NOT compulsory, even with the 2 stage approval process. They only added it there for those it is applicable to. Police clearance is not needed for Nigerian temporary resident visa applicants. Those who do it simply do so in the Nigerian tradition of "make I do everything so that dem nor go delay my application". VOs won't demand for it. 2 Likes |

eightyeight: We can't truly say if this document is real or doctored. It wasn't the applicant that posted it but a third party. I would take that with a pinch of salt. Apart from that, it is very possible that the applicant may have misrepresented facts, failed medicals or criminality checks. It is even possible that the applicant submitted fake documents or there have been changes to his eligibility based on one factor or another. I really doubt if IRCC will give an AIP and finally deny an application for the type of reasons I see here (these reasons should have been enough for a stage one refusal to begin with). It just doesn't add up. This is my opinion on this. Everyone should calm down. 8 Likes |

skull4eva: I did some research as promised and came across this: Financial aid is available but limited and highly competitive. It is suggested that students give serious consideration to their financial planning before submitting an application. Normally, a student will not be accepted unless adequate financial support can be provided through a scholarship/award and/or by the student's supervisor. Academic units cannot guarantee financial support via teaching assistantships. It seems your request should be directed primarily to your supervisor. However, you should still send the request to the GPD. You shouldn't even have been admitted without financial support in the first place so you have a strong case here. |

skull4eva: You don't need any specific format. Just make it simple and direct. Dear GPD (or name), I am one of the new intakes of the PhD program in Bioresource Engineering for the Fall 2020 semester. I would like to confirm if I am eligible for any departmental funding or assistantship at the moment. I would really appreciate if I can get a funding offer as this would greatly enhance my living condition and facilitate my application for a study permit. Regards, Skull4eva. 1 Like |
