Eight killed In Sunday Night Attack In Plateau Community

Again, armed men on Sunday night invaded the Danda Chugwi community of Jos South local government area of Plateau State killing seven people on the spot and injuring two others.

The injured were taken to the hospital where one of them later died, bringing the death toll to eight.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, BYM, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the incident saying “Seven people have been confirmed dead at Danda Chugwi community following an attack by Fulani militias.

The attack happened on Sunday, 31/07/2022 at around 9:00 pm. Others who sustained serious gun injuries have been taken to Vom Christian hospital for immediate medical attention.”

But the State Police Command could not confirm the incident as the phone number of the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo was switched off while that of the Media Officer of the Operation Safe Haven, OpSH, Major Ishaku Takwa was not reachable at the time of this report.

However, it was gathered that the victims would be buried this morning as a resident, David Davou told our medium that “what happened was that a family of Mr. Pam Gyang was attacked, some of them were shot and cut with a machete.

Seven members of the family died immediately but one later died in the hospital. This brings the total number of people killed in cold blood to eight.”

CrimeTerrorists Take Battle To Buhari’s Doorstep, Abuja Residents Panic by FullBlastLight(op): 1:18pm On Aug 01, 2022
Terrorists Take Battle To Buhari’s Doorstep, Abuja Residents Panic

Last week’s attack on the Presidential Guards Brigade clearly indicated that terrorists must have made inroads into the Federal Capital Territory, the country’s seat of power, SOLOMON ODENIYI writes...

Three daring attacks by terrorists within three weeks have raised questions about the security architecture in the nation’s capital.

Regarded as one of the most fortified custodial centres in the country, the Kuje Medium Custodial Centre was on July 5 successfully attacked by members of the Islamic State for West African Province, who freed 443 inmates, including 69 of their members.

The terrorists, who were said to be over 100, reportedly operated for more than two hours and overwhelmed a battalion of the Nigerian Army, Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Armed Squad of the Nigerian Correctional Service, among others stationed at the facility.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.); the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan; and the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, were all totally befuddled at the sheer brazenness with which the attack was carried out.

The President and some of his cabinet members, as well as the Senate President, had yet to recover from the shock and were still apprehensive about the Kuje attack and the possibility of the escapees staying back to torment them when they woke up to yet another report of an attack on the Presidential Guards Brigade last Sunday.

The Presidential Guards Brigade, which provides security for the Presidential Villa, the nation’s capital, and neighbouring communities, was ambushed by terrorists, who killed two officers and six soldiers.

Again on Thursday night, some dare-devil terrorists went to a military checkpoint located at Zuma Rock and opened fire on personnel on duty. Although they were repelled, a soldier was killed in that attack while two were injured.

Presently, all institutions of learning in the Federal Capital Territory have been abruptly shut down due to the rising insecurity in the territory.

Before these attacks, there have been pockets of cases leading to the deaths and abductions of some residents in Robochi, Abaji, Kwali, and Kuje, among other neighbouring communities in the FCT.

In March, residents of Chukuku in the Kuje Area Council blocked the Gwagwalada-Kuje express road and made bonfires to protest against the incessant abductions and killings in their community.

As of then, they claimed no fewer than 30 residents had been abducted since the year started.

However, security analysts believe these incidents and the spectre of insecurity witnessed in neighbouring states like Nasarawa, Niger, Kogi, and Kaduna should have put the security operatives and the government on red alert and measures capable of averting these attacks should have been emplaced.

Compounding the fears of the residents was the leaked memo from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, which reported a planned attack by terrorists on the FCT.

In addition to this, there has been a litany of messages on social media platforms warning residents to refrain from some places within the territory.

FCT, Abuja:
In recent times, the FCT has been experiencing an influx of people from other northern states as a result of the few cases of insecurity recorded in the territory compared to others. The recent attacks by terrorists have, however, put paid to that.

Some of the residents who spoke with our correspondent said they couldn’t go about their normal activities as a result of the current situation in the FCT.

A resident who was recently transferred to the FCT, Mrs. Adebimpe Olayinka, said she did not feel safe at the moment.

She said, “When I got transferred to Abuja, I was not bothered about security as much because the FCT was regarded as one of the safest places to stay in the country. One should not have expected anything less because that is where the seat of power is. With the recent attacks and happenings in the FCT, I feel unsafe.

Our community leaders have doubled our security, but I still feel that people that successfully attack Kuje, the Presidential Guard, tell me where they cannot attack. And with the news of strange faces being seen across the FCT, it shows they have surrounded Abuja. I hope and pray it doesn’t get worse.”

A trader at Karimo Market who gave her name as Lauretta said the rising insecurity in the FCT was affecting her business.

Govt efforts:
The Nigeria Police Force said it had deployed additional assets to strategic locations within the country’s capital to avert imminent attacks.

Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi
The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that the Force Intelligence Bureau has been charged with gathering intelligence.

Similarly, the Guards Brigade has deployed more troops across the city to prevent another security breach.

The FCTA has also met with the governments of neighbouring states in order to rejig security operations. The security operatives in the FCT and their counterparts in contiguous states at the meeting agreed to take the fight to the terrorists’ camps.

Also, the terrified federal lawmakers, besides threatening to impeach the president, had met with the military high command to fashion a way out of the situation in the nation’s capital.

Risk management and security expert, Kabiru Adamu, lamented that despite the early signs, no corresponding measures to avert the attacks were put in place.

He said, “Outside AMAC, there have been constant attacks. If you ask us, the tell-tale sign was there. The Niger State governor had warned, even though his warnings were considered political, because the location he talked about was about 200 kilometres away.

“The governor of Kaduna had also warned. All of this points to the fact that these monsters had encircled the FCT and were planning an attack. The corresponding security posture would have limited or prevented the monsters from coming into the FCT. Unfortunately, we didn’t see that. Yes, it would be unfair to say the security department did not do much. They did.

“They carried out raids, which we didn’t see as a coordinated and systematic approach to the issue.” The forests, if you look at the ones that lead to Kaduna, would take you as far as Niger, through Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi. If you look at the one in Niger, there is no way you would carry out a raid and be successful without involving the neighbouring states to block the terrorists from moving around. The result is where we are today.”

He advised that reports about the planned attack on the FCT be handled with caution.

On his part, the former Director of the Department of State Services, Mike Ejiofo, said the police could not have prepared ahead to avert the attacks because they lacked the required manpower.

He said, “How do you prepare ahead when Police manpower is inadequate, they are ill-equipped and underfunded? That is why people must be involved in security.”

He called on residents to be security conscious and get involved in activities that would secure their communities.

Ejiofo said, “Everybody must not only be security conscious but vigilant. Residents must observe their environment. This is the time to form groups and employ vigilantes to look after the community to strengthen security within their environment.

Also, they should ensure they have CCTV in their houses, although, it doesn’t stop crime from happening but it will help the police during its investigation.”

Atiku Watched While His Men Insulted Me – Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has described as unfortunate the unguarded public comments credited to respectable party members against him after the conduct of the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential primaries on May 29 and 30, 2022.

The governor maintained that the right thing such persons should have done, particularly the former Vice President and the PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, or the party’s National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, would have been to reach out to him, adding that they never did.

Wike made these remarks on Friday while speaking with journalists at the international wing of the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, in Ikwerre Local Government Area, shortly after his arrival from Spain.

This was contained in a statement by the Special Assistant on Media to the governor, Kelvin Ebiri, and made available to newsmen in Port Harcourt.

Wike explained how Atiku used the occasion of the unveiling of the PDP vice-presidential candidate, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, and his appearance on a national television to lie against him.

The statement read, “But there comes a time that people will understand and know the true facts. So, obviously, whether I will speak is not in doubt, (it is) to let Nigerians know the actual truth.

“Having known the truth, whatever they decide to do with it is left for Nigerians. Because you can imagine, when the presidential candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, unveiled the vice presidential candidate, no right thinking lover of this party would say that the speech he made on that day was fair.

“Forget about the favour seekers, forget about the scavengers. But I never reacted to it. That is because this party belongs to all of us.

Thereafter, he (Atiku) appeared on Arise Television, see the statement he made. Many lies were told and you said I should not react to some of those issues. That would not be fair.”

Wike explained that after the PDP primary, he returned to Rivers State to focus on fulfilling the remaining promises that he made to Rivers people.

He said, already a number of completed projects had been outlined for inauguration and when that was done, he would respond to all the lies peddled against him.

The governor said, “Assuming today, I’m not alive, obviously what they have said would be accepted as the truth.

Look at his (Atiku) attack dogs, Sule Lamido, Babaginda Aliyu, Maina Waziri. Look at the statements they issued. Look at the abuses they rained on me, but I never reacted.

“And Nigerians will ask, you mean these things happened? So, it is important that as a person and for my own future, and for those who rally around me to say, look, this is not fair.

So, I will make sure that I will react to them, line by line of the statements made by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar himself and his attack dogs.”

Wike asserted that he contested the presidential primary squarely and emerged in the second position, adding that he would not tolerate being disparaged.

“But every day, his people come up to attack me, to say one thing or the other. That’s quite unfair and so I should let Nigerians know at the appropriate time. That will be after the inauguration of projects that we have lined up.

“We will say look, this is not correct, so that posterity, history will be on our side that we have been able to keep the record straight.

So, nobody should be in doubt whether I am going to speak on the issue of the PDP, issues of the primaries and other related matters.

“Nigerians will know what happen, Nigerians will know those who love this country, Nigerians will know what went behind. And that is to assure you that I am going to speak on that,” he stated.

Wike clarified that former Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, met with him in Spain, but said he was not sent by Alhaji Atiku, so nobody should think in such direction.

Wike wondered why Alhaji Atiku Abubakar who visited him at his place to solicit his support does not know the way to the house he once visited.

Reacting, the Media Adviser to Atiku, Mr Paul Ibe, said though some people might want to escalate the crisis, the former Vice President and PDP were focused on bringing the disagreement to a closure.

Ibe, who spoke in a telephone interview with Saturday PUNCH, said, “His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar had his interview and Governor Wike has had his response, we are now focused on bringing to a closure the crisis that has arisen from the nomination process.

“That is our focus, and that is the focus of well meaning leaders, stakeholders, members of the party and even Nigerians who are desirous of a leadership that will change their fortunes. That is our preoccupation.

“We will disappoint those who want to escalate this crisis. Our focus remains to bring to a closure all of these. The process to bring to closure the crisis that came about from the nomination process is ongoing and it will be concluded sooner than later.

“The process will definitely bring the crisis to an end. What has happened is normal in every contest, not only political contest, but every contest where people would be aggrieved arising from the outcome of such a contest.

What is important is the ability to be able to look at the bigger picture, and everybody is focused on that.”

Pastor Enenche Gives Nigerian Flag To Peter Obi, Others, Says Nigeria Won’t Go Down!

At the judgemental praise program held at the Dunamis International Gospel Center, Abuja, between Friday night and Saturday morning, Pastor Paul Enenche called on Peter Obi and two others to each hold the Nigerian flag.

Inside the church’s 100,000 seater auditorium on Saturday morning around 2:20am, Enenche invited Obi of the Labour party, Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Emmanuel Udom and the wife of Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, Dame Edith, to the altar to serve as representatives of Nigeria as prayers were offered for the nation.

He termed them as “those representing our Political Leadership.”

Enenche told the congregation that the symbolism and significance of telling them to hold the Nigerian flag is that the “nation cannot go down, Nigeria cannot go down!”

Enenche then asked about 63 trumpeters (led by gospel artist Nathaniel Bassey) to blow their trumpets heralding a New Dawn as Nigeria clocks 62 in October, 2023.

Emmanuel Udom, Edith Okowa and Peter Obi invited to the Glory Dome altar by Pastor Paul Enenche on 30/7/2022

The cleric directed everybody to go all on their knees and seek divine intervention over the nation’s woes.

Enenche then prayed thus, “Father in the name of Jesus, we are here on our knees to lift up Nigeria. Thank you for a new day.

“Everybody open your mouth and say something new about Nigeria,” the cleric continued while Obi and others all held firmly the Nigerian flag while still on their knees.

The microphone was then given to the wife of Delta State governor, Dame and she prayed thus,” It is well with Nigeria. A new dawn is birthed.

“Henceforth , Nigeria is liberated, rescued to the glory of God,” Udom prayed also.

When Obi’s turn for prayer came, the congregation went wild in excitement for about 20 seconds.

He prayed “God, we have no other country except this one. God deliver us , God free us, God liberate us. Amen.”

The final prayer for the session was taken by the Deputy President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Archbishop John Bishop, who later joined them on the altar

“It is a new dawn on our nation. Bloodshed, kidnapping, economic depression has come to an end. We receive a brand new leadership for our nation,” he prayed.

Obi is a presidential candidate for the Labour party while the Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, who was represented by his wife, is the running mate to Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic party.

I don't think the Zambian version can work in Nigeria because of cost of producing such ballot papers and lots of legal cases engulfing parties in Nigeria.

Update

I am tired of these senseless mentions.

Zambia has a little over 8 million voters while Nigeria has about 100 million voters.

Adding any other feature to the existing features in the ballot papers as INEC initially planned will require more ink to print them.

INEC may ask for more money before they are included because it wasn't in their initial budget.

PoliticsAbuja No Longer Safe, Release Nnamdi Kanu Now – IPOB Tells DSS by FullBlastLight(op): 1:14pm On Jul 28, 2022
Abuja No Longer Safe, Release Nnamdi Kanu Now – IPOB Tells DSS

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has demanded that its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu be released unconditionally from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) due to rising insecurity in the nation’s capital, Abuja.

IPOB urged the federal government and its security agents to act on the demand of the United Nations Working Group to free Kanu as it stressed that the federal capital territory is unsafe.

The separatist group said this in a statement by its media and publicity secretary, Emma Powerful on Thursday.

Recall that the federal government has ordered the closure of secondary schools in Abuja due to worsening insecurity.

IPOB, in the statement, partly said, “The attention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been drawn to the sudden closure of all the public schools operating in Abuja because of the threats from terrorists to take over Abuja and entire Nigeria

“IPOB, therefore, demands immediate release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from the DSS dungeon in Abuja by the Nigerian government and her DSS.

“We are reminding Nigeria and her Security Agencies that the world through the UN Right group has mandated for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the appropriate compensation paid to him without delay because he committed no crime against Nigeria and her sovereignty.

“The UN Group warned that if anything untoward happens to him it will be disastrous to Nigeria, and IPOB is ready to carry this order to the letter.

“We are advising the government of Nigeria to urgently release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally before their planned jihad in Abuja. We are monitoring them and the shenanigans they are playing with their terrorist collaborators to take over the government.

“IPOB is neither bothered nor interested in the plan of the terrorists to overrun the Nigeria government which we have rejected, our concern is the safety of our leader.

We, therefore, demand that the Nigerian government must release the leader of IPOB now because he committed no crime as enunciated by the UN Right group.

“As Nigeria is closing schools, businesses, and other activities because of Fulani terrorists’ threat to attack Abuja, it clearly shows that Abuja is no longer safe for people to live.

Hence our unequivocal demand for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu before anything happens to him. We demand prompt and complete implementation of the UN directives concerning Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

PoliticsBanditry And Atiku's "90% Voters" By Abimbola Adelakun by FullBlastLight(op): 7:52am On Jul 28, 2022
Banditry and Atiku’s '‘90% Voters’' By Abimbola Adelakun

In a recent broadcast, the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, mentioned that most of those who would vote for him are not on social media.

During his interview with Arise TV last Friday, Atiku noted that 90 per cent of the people comprising his political base, the Northern region of Nigeria, do not use social media.

This silent majority is his joker compared to his Labour Party opponent’s online following. Some people made predictable noises about Atiku’s claim, but the man was hardly wrong.

According to data provider Statista, only about 53 million of us currently use social media. That is about a quarter of the projected 200 million population of Nigeria.

While a significant chunk of northerners might not be on social media, many of them also do not vote if we go by the statistics of the last two presidential elections.

In 2019, all the votes cast to elect the President were a mere 28.6 million—less than 15 per cent of the country.

Despite all the hype about a mammoth crowd of northerners who jump out on election day to dutifully vote, we do not record up to 50 per cent turnout of registered voters.

Even the election that brought the incumbent President, Maj. Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to office in 2015 did not witness a remarkable turnout.

For all the fanatical love they say the North has for Buhari, and their putative tendency to show up at the polls for their regional politicians, the votes were low relative to their estimated population.

Either the country’s population is exaggerated, or people just do not have enough faith in democracy to expend their energies on the process.

Days ago, after watching the BBC Africa documentary on banditry in places like Zamfara and Sokoto, I wondered how many of the 90 per cent Atiku is banking on to show up for him on election day have voting on their list of priorities.

The northerners I saw in the documentary look traumatised and beleaguered; helpless victims of a dysfunctional country.

The documentary narrated the story of a region hard-pressed by increasingly hostile environmental conditions, the concomitant hardship such as communal clashes between farmers and herders, and the inevitable descent into criminality as people strove for survival.

Watching the documentaries, you learn that many thousands of people had been killed. The thousands of those alive bear the trauma of violence and grapple with rage, grief, and survivor guilt.

Some months ago, TrustTV published a similar documentary, and it was just as insightful. Between BBC Africa and TrustTV’s daring foray into the enclaves of the bandits, we see the stories of a people besieged.

Even children, born in the middle of a war they did not ask for, fight for their dear lives. Amidst the monstrosity of violence and displacement, one still sees the force of human resilience in the actions of brave parents/guardians teaching children their schoolwork since they can no longer go to school due to the state of insecurity.

They manage to keep the lights in the minds of their children turned on despite everything. Several times during the documentary, I wondered if these people are a part of Atiku’s 90 per cent count. It would be ridiculous to ask them if they have considered voting either Atiku or his opponents.

Throughout the various narrations of the people in the BBC documentary, one struggles to apprehend heroes from the villains.

From the criminal sovereigns whom we call bandits—the linguistic registers we have applied do not aptly capture what they represent—to the vigilantes repelling attacks and sometimes carrying out reprisals, to the Nigerian soldiers and police braving the war and whose roles as saviours and executors frequently collapse, life is complex.

The bandits interviewed in the two documentaries were different, but they shared similar stories of an ever-decimating quality of life, social injustice, and disenchantment with the rudderless nature of the Nigerian state.

Their stories do not justify their maniac violence against poor and innocent people. There is no circumstance under which we will acquit the blood on their hands and the suffering they have caused.

Still, one can note that their bitterness against the country coheres with that of millions of young people in other regions of the country where violence has become endemic.

The problems have a similar pattern of Nigeria failing Nigerians; a forewarning that the night might get even darker if we do not wake up.

At one end of the spectrum of Nigeria’s problems is the band of youths also braving all kinds of middle passages to leave the country before they are entirely enveloped in darkness, and at the other are those who cannot leave but put their resilience into action by taking to criminality as an occupation.

According to one of the bandits interviewed, what they do is now big business. The more money these bandits are paid as ransom, the wider they expand their enterprise by procuring more guns, and the more intricate the web of conspiracy against Nigeria gets woven.

An abduction of school children that one bandit group carried out netted a whopping N60m. One could diligently put in 35 years of meritorious service into the civil service and still not come close to a quarter of that amount. These young men have tasted blood, found an easy means to free-flowing money, and their conscience is dead.

There is no single or simple solution to the crisis, yet the situation needs arrest before the children currently being traumatised by the violence and the displacement turn into another generation of killers. Today’s bandits were yesterday’s neglected children.

From the look of things, our leaders have run the limits of their wits in tackling these problems. Unused to the art of social reengineering, they appease the criminals by offering money, amnesty, and other forms of pacification.

A senator once sponsored a bill proposing to send repentant bandits to school abroad. The Emir of Birnin ’Yandoto in Zamfara, Aliyu Marafa, turbaned Ado Alero, a bandit kingpin currently on Katsina State police list of wanted criminals.

The Emir must have assumed that ennobling a man like that with a chieftaincy title would put him on the side of the people, but those measures only work in the short term.

While each state must work out its own salvation, Nigeria still needs to urgently fashion out an overarching agenda that will confront problems of desert encroachment and other fallouts of environmental changes causing tension in those rural areas. We need reforms and resources at all levels of society.

The news about yet another gunmen attack in the Federal Capital Territory on Tuesday came in just around the time I finished watching the documentary.

This time, they hit the presidential guards and killed eight of them. The violent attacks that have been taking place everywhere in the country are lodging itself in the nation’s capital.

It is an unfortunate development that highlights how much the debates around next year’s elections have been substantially lacking.

People have wasted valuable time hyperventilating over a Muslim-Muslim ticket when the hunger and pain assaulting us is irreligious. The harder the conditions in the country get, the more the insecurity situation worsens.

Our presidential candidates need to start coming up with concrete agenda to resolve the myriad problems of insecurity and the failing economy.

Enough of ‘agbado and cassava’ economics; a ‘demand and consumption’ ideology with little bearing on the reality of the people who have sold their farms to ransom themselves and their children from abductors.

The challenges ahead of us are enormous; we need a leadership that can systematically improve life for all Nigerians.

Ironically, some Fulanis in the BBC Africa documentary complained of marginalisation, saying they are poor victims of Hausas’ nepotism.

If you ask the Hausas (and the multiple ethnicities that constitute northern Nigeria) for their side of the story, I am almost confident they will share similar grievances.

Unfortunately for the Fulanis, their southern counterparts think of them as the oppressors. They imagine that the Hausa-Fulani (always categorised as a singular identity) enjoy some benefits because they share ethnicity with the current occupant of Aso Rock.

I wonder what the ‘Fulanisation agenda’ means to those Fulani and the bandits among them who think they are victimised because of their ethnicity.

Come to think of it, almost every Nigerian group alleges marginalisation. One wonders, for whom has this Nigerian contraption ever paid off?

From the North to South, we have been equal victims of a perennially irresponsible, corrupt, and radically evil leadership.

Who even gets any benefit from being Nigerians? The apparatchiks of darkness begging for our votes should be begging for our forgiveness for how they have decimated us.
