The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has reacted to viral videos of Permanent Voters Cards PVCs allegedly buried underground in Imo state, including inside the compound of an unnamed high-profile person. 

INEC National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education Committee, Barr. Festus Okoye disclosed on Thursday that the Commission is not taking these allegations lightly.

According to him, INEC has “commenced immediate investigation and anyone found culpable in this diabolical scheme clearly intended to disenfranchise Nigerians will be sanctioned under the law”.

He said every eligible Nigerian who registered as a voter is entitled to his/her PVC, as the constitutional right to vote in any election must never be suppressed or abridged in any way. 

Okoye added that as far as the record of the Commission is concerned, PVCs have been printed for all valid registrants in Nigeria up to 14th January 2022 and delivered to all the States of the Federation for collection by voters.

“We will not allow retrogressive elements to sabotage our efforts. The issues of voter registration, compilation of the voters’ roll and issuance of PVCs are at the heart of any democratic elections and the Commission is working hard to ensure that every eligible citizen who appears in person at the registration venue is registered. We assure Nigerians that this matter will be pursued to its logical conclusion”, he stated. 

Already, Okoye said the Commission is reviewing the procedure for collecting PVCs to make it less cumbersome and more transparent.

“This will be a major topic at the next regular quarterly meeting with stakeholders so that working together we can find a lasting solution to the issue.


“Meanwhile, we appeal to those who found the allegedly buried PVCs to deliver them to our nearest State or Local Government office. This will be their patriotic contribution to the consolidation of our electoral process”, INEC stated.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, on Thursday, said gunmen attacked its officials in Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu State.

INEC Chairman, Information, Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, who confirmed the development in a statement, said one of the commission’s staff was injured and is currently hospitalised.

Okoye said the officials were attacked while on the Continuous Voter Registration exercise at a Community Primary School Umuopu in Umuozzi Ward 19 in Enugu State.

“The gunmen fired sporadically into the air to disperse registrants and registration officials. In the ensuing stampede, one of our staff sustained injuries and is receiving treatment in a hospital,” the statement read.

“Two voter registration machines and personal items of the staff such as mobile phones were lost.

“Consequently, Ward level registration of voters in Igboeze North is hereby suspended”.

Okoye, however, said the Commission has reported the incident to police authorities in the state.

An autopsy carried out on the corpse of a lady found dead in an Abuja hotel, Esther Isaac, revealed that she died of “severe asphyxia.”

Healthgrade notes that asphyxiation occurs when the oxygen supply to the body is restricted which can be due to suffocation, strangulation, drowning, or choking.

The PUNCH had reported that the 21-year-old lady was on February 25, 2022, found dead in the room she lodged in at the Agete Hotel in the Gwarinpa area of the FCT.

Her brother, Emmanuel had insisted that Esther was murdered and accused the hotel management of covering up by saying that their CCTV was faulty the day Esther lodged in the facility.

But the management of the hotel distanced itself from any complicity in Esther’s death.

In a statement by Babajide Iletogun, the management said Esther came into the hotel with a male who gave his name as Chukwuemeka Michael but absconded.

He added that the police were immediately alerted.

The statement read in part, “On Friday, February 25, 2022, two guests, a male and a female, came into our hotel between 10 am and 11 am. They asked for rooms and the rooms were shown to them by the porter.

‘After examining the rooms, they picked room 901. The male guest filled the registration form with the name Chukwuemeka Michael and paid N9, 000 being the charge for the room.”

He, however, said the CCTV in the hotel had been faulty since January 2022, adding that efforts by the technicians to restore it before the incident didn’t yield result.

However, a copy of the autopsy obtained by our correspondent on Friday stated that Esther was assaulted.

The autopsy was done at the National Hospital Hospital, Abuja by Dr. P.G Jibrin, a pathologist on June 29, 2022.  The report with the certificate number 7986 read, “Cause of death: Severe asphyxia. Antecedent causes of death: Strangulation due to physical assault.’’

No Corps Members Raped In Akwa Ibom Attack – NYSC

The National Youth Service Corps has described as untrue reports that some 21 female corps members had been raped during an attack carried out on Wednesday “by thieves”.

The scheme confirmed that contrary to reports, “no bodily harm was meted on them, and no corps member was raped.”

The Akwa Ibom State Coordinator of NYSC, Chinyere Ekwe, made the clarification in a statement obtained by journalists in Abuja on Thursday.

She said, “In the said story making the rounds, it was alleged that Gunmen attacked, raped, robbed and dispossessed Corps Members of their valuables at Udo Ekong Ekwere Street, off Information Drive, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State where they reside.

“To put the unfortunate incident in proper perspective, the State Coordinator, NYSC Akwa Ibom State, Chinyere Ekwe in the company of the State Police Commissioner, Olatoye Durosinmi, visited the Corps Members for an on-the-spot assessment.

“While there, it was confirmed that 21 corps members occupy the said property. The interaction with the corps members further revealed that an attack on them was actually carried out by thieves at about 1 am this morning.

“In the process, the invaders took their valuables including phones, laptops and some cash. They confirmed that no bodily harm was meted on them, and no corps member was raped.

“While the actions and intentions of those criminal elements remained condemnable, we passionately appeal to the social media operators to exercise restraint and not trivialize such unfortunate incidents as the consequences on the psychology of parents and guardians of corps members in the state would be dangerously affected.

“However, it is worthy of note that the State Commissioner of Police has assured the Corps Members and members of the public that an investigation on the matter has been launched and that the culprits will soon be apprehended.

“Meanwhile, the Commissioner has equally detailed surveillance around the area with a promise to extend the same to other Corps lodges.

“Accordingly, the State Coordinator has reaffirmed that there was no incident of rape. She, therefore, urges the corps members in the State to go about their lawful duties and make use of the security phone lines already provided, while in distressed situations.”

They're laying the foundation here and there's nothing like "in due time" because kids form thier perspective of school at an early stage. It reduces the stress of trying to do that later. Anything to make the journey smoother for your baby is acceptable, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with a baby putting in a PJ anywhere. They change thier clothes in school on a normal day, so don't project adult reasoning to babies. Like I said, you don't any idea what nursery education is about.
