The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria on Wednesday warned the Senate to stop the planned deregulation of the national minimum wage in the country in the interest of industrial peace. The union alleged that since most of the Senators were “sponsored” by the state governors, it was not unlikely that they were under pressure to deregulate wage so that the states could pay paltry sums as salaries far less that the N18,000 monthly national minimum wage to their workers. In a statement by the Secretary-General of ASCSN, Mr. Alade Lawal, the association argued that such an action would not be fair to Nigerian workers. Lawal said, “Such a plan, if carried out, will lead to anarchy in the industrial relation arena in the country and will negatively affect the democratic process and impoverish Nigerian workers and their dependants, as many state governors would want to pay as low as N5,000 as minimum wage. We urge the Senate to reverse itself on this matter and demonstrate for once that it is not only preoccupied with legislations that benefit its members.” The association stressed the need for the legislature to be engaged in deep intellectual reflection before embarking on the amendment of the constitution or initiating new laws in order not to jeopardise the stability of the country. Lawal recalled that a recent report by the National Bureau of Statistics showed that about 112 million Nigerians lived below poverty line. He advised the Senate to be concerned about how to alleviate poverty among the teeming voters “who put them in their privileged positions instead of being preoccupied with how to impoverish them more.” Source :http://www.punchng.com/news/dont-deregulate-minimum-wage-workers-warn-senate/ |
There was an explosion in Lagos on Wednesday after vandals ruptured an oil pipeline belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation at Akinbo Island. PUNCH Metro learnt that the culprits came to the jetty in three barges and canoes around 1am and ruptured the splash zone of the pipeline and siphoned thousands of litres of petrol into jerry cans and operated for hours undeterred. However, around 4.30am, there was a fire outbreak and the pipe through which they siphoned the fuel as well as a canoe were engulfed in flames. Our correspondent, who visited the area, observed that two security posts were located about 250 metres from the scene. About 200 melted jerrycans littered the scene. The Deputy Manager, Pipelines and Product Marketing Company, Atlas Cove, Mr. Banjo Olajide, said he could not say the quantity of petrol lost to the fire but added that petrol was usually pumped at the rate of 600 cubic metres per hour to Mosinmi Depot. When asked what the PPMC had done to ensure that pipeline vandals were not allowed to operate in the area, Olajide said about 50 policemen and 47 men of the Nigerian Navy as well as operatives of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps usually patrolled the area. He said the agency had built watchtowers and police posts at the black spots near the pipelines’ right of way. “We have two security posts and an observatory tower here just about 200 metres away. We have about 50 policemen, 47 naval personnel stationed here. Some NSCDC personnel also patrol the area but they are not here all the time,” he said. Olajide said Nigerian Army engineers had begun the rehabilitation of the pipelines’ right of way from Atlas Cove and the area was not difficult for security agents to patrol. Olajide said although oil distribution had been shut down temporarily until the affected pipelines were repaired, the incident would not lead to fuel scarcity. “It will not affect the supply of fuel. After things have stabilised, we will continue to pump petrol. We will check for leakages and we will make more repairs if need be,” he said. Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency, who cordoned off the area, said it could not be confirmed if there were any casualties. The spokesperson, NEMA, South-West Zone, Ibrahim Farinloye, said, “The fire started at midnight between 1am and 4am. On getting there, we could not move too close because the fire was intense. However, the fire was put out around 10:48am. “We did not see any corpses and we cannot say if anyone was injured. We however recovered a 16mm hose used by the vandals as well as parts of boats used by them “Over 200 damaged kegs were also recovered. Cooling and pegging process has commenced.” Source http://www.punchng.com/news/explosion-as-vandals-rupture-nnpc-pipeline/ |

A 25-year-old visually- impaired student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Sunday Adeniyi, says he is convinced that his dream of getting a quality education will soon be cut short by broken home. He told our correspondent that the development had led to inadequate funding of his education. Adeniyi, a part one student of Linguistics and African Languages, believed that this might not have happened if his parents were still together. He added that the fact that he was blind was also working against him since his status as a visually-impaired person seemed to be an embarrassment to his friends and school mates. He said, “I was not born blind, but since I became totally blind in 2004, it seems I have become a burden on everyone.” Adeniyi said his sight problem started in 1992 with his left eye but in 2004, he also lost the right eye. He said the impairment was initially detected by one of his teachers when he was in primary one. He said, “In 1992, my teacher informed my parents that something was wrong with my sight. Since then, we have been moving from one hospital to another. We tried our best to prevent the affected left eye from extending to the right one and I actually managed to finish my primary education with my right eye. “I had the most shocking experience the day I was writing my final common entrance examination paper. As I was writing, I noticed that my sight was getting dull. I couldn’t finish my paper.” Adeniyi said his parents’ marital problem worsened his plight as both of them were preoccupied with their personal challenges. He said, “I am actually suffering from the problem of a broken home. My mother left her matrimonial home around 1990. She left me before I started having challenges with my left eye and when she learnt of my situation, she got involved and was actually taking me to hospital, until when she suddenly stopped. “As things stand now, I may actually have to leave school because lack of funds is making life very unbearable for me. My father is really trying, but the fact is that most of the things we (blind people) use are expensive. This is why most of us don’t further our education. “When I gained admission, I had to get a fairly used laptop because there was no much fund. Since then, the laptop has been developing faults. Imagine there was a day I couldn’t attend a class because of N40. That day, there was no one to take me to the venue of the lecture.” He also lamented the attitude of most of his colleagues, saying they see blindness as a communicable disease and therefore did not like to associate with him. Adeniyi said, “People steal my things and that is always very painful and challenging. That reminds me of my condition. “At present, I am having a very great challenge with my department. Due to the fact that the department is young and no visually impaired person has been to the department, there is no provision for people like me. And my colleagues have not been encouraging. Anytime I call on them for assistance, especially to read for me, they feel it is a waste of time. “Anyway, those are minor issues compared to the fact that I might not be able to continue my education because of lack of funds. I really want to. Education will make a difference in my life.” Source--- http://www.punchng.com/metro/visually-impaired-undergraduate-laments-broken-home/
