National Agency for the Control of AIDS on Tuesday declared that 3.4 million Nigerians were living with HIV/AIDS. The agency’s Director-General, Prof. John Idoko, stated this at a Senate public hearing on a bill to prohibit discrimination against persons living with HIV/AIDS. With the figure, he said Nigeria had the second largest HIV burden globally. Idoko noted that while the national prevalence stabilised at about four per cent, 13 states still carried higher burden. Noting that the country was behind target in several important indicators, the NACA boss explained that one of every three people in need was currently receiving treatment. Idoko, who said only 18 per cent of HIV positive women received prophylaxis against mother-child transmission, noted that more than 40 per cent of HIV positive persons did not know their status. However, the Senate President, David Mark, who declared the hearing open, called for an end to stigmatisation and discrimination against persons living with HIV. Mark, represented by the Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Abdul Ningi, said the citizens should be educated more about HIV. He lamented that many HIV positive people were afraid to go for tests or access necessary treatment because of negative societal behaviour. He said, “It is important for all to be educated to know that HIV is just like any other disease. Once identified, all a sufferer needs to do is to access treatment and maintain a healthy lifestyle. “Infected people are hiding under common diseases like diabetes because of discrimination. They will not tell you that they are HIV positive for fear of being discriminated against in their workplaces. “That somebody is infected does not mean he is not good or morally upright person or that he should be denied employment or barred from his social networks. “HIV is a disease that can be contracted both intentionally and accidentally.” The Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, noted that the HIV pandemic posed a big challenge to health and development across the world. He said, “In the countries that are worst affected, including Nigeria, the impact of HIV/AIDS have eroded decades of developmental goals and gains, stultifying economies and destabilising societies. “There is no doubt that HIV is expected to continue to be a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in many countries and population, including Nigeria. “We must begin to be proactive in the implementation of action plans that are workable and friendly, and advocacy must be carried out at all levels of the society. “HIV poses a serious obstacle to the attainment of decent work and sustainable development and its effects are concentrated among the most productive age group. ”HIV problem has been made worse by the violation of their fundamental rights at the work place, schools, communities and the larger society on the basis of real or perceived status, particularly, through discrimination directed at persons living with HIV and AIDS.” source http://www.punchng.com/news/3-4-million-nigerians-are-hiv-positive-naca/ |
Residents of Ujabhole-Uwessan, in Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo State, were on Sunday, thrown into mourning, as an 18-year-old girl from the area was electrocuted by cables of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria. The deceased, identified as Iyogosa Godsday, was reportedly hit by PHCN high tension wire while trying put on line, clothes she hadwashed, after a downpour the same day. It was gathered that people ran helter-skelter when the high tension cable fell, while several household electrical appliances were destroyed. According to an eyewitness, Adubuka Ehimen, the deceased came out after the rains and was trying to spread clothes on a line, few meters from the house, when suddenly she was hit by the huge tension wire and died. He added that sympathisers avoided moving close, for fear of being electrocuted. He said, “Iyogosa came out of the house after that heavy Sunday rain and was spreading her clothes on the rope in front of their house at Idumu Asse, when she was hit by the wire, immediately she fell to the ground and died. “Though she has been buried, but as I speak with you, no PHCN official has come to the village, even after we reported the case at the Irrua station office of the establishment. Right now light has not been restored and we are in darkness.” Assistant General Manager, Public Relations, Benin PHCN, Mr. Oyebode Fadipe pleaded for time to investigate the matter. He said, “I don’t have any information on that, I will call to find to find out the situation.” source http://www.punchng.com/metro/girl-18-electrocuted-by-phcn-cable-in-edo/ |
President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, has called on security agencies to arrest a former Head of State and presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change in the 2011 general elections, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) saying he constitutes a security risk. The call, he said, followed comments by Buhari condemning the military operations in the three northern states of Yobe, Borno and Adamawa, where a state of emergency has been declared by the Federal Government. The association, according to a statement by the Special Assistant to the CAN President on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Kenny Ashaka, on Tuesday, also described as unfortunate Buhari’s decision to throw his weight “behind a blood thirsty sect” without considerations for the hundreds of Christians sent to their early graves. He said it was not expected of an ex-head of state. Buhari was said to have accused the Federal Government of double standards in dealing with the issue of Boko Haram, during a radio programme on Liberty FM in Kaduna,. He was said to have questioned the “special treatment” given to the Niger-Delta militants by the Federal Government, while the Boko Haram members were being killed and their houses destroyed by the government. But Oritsejafor, who said Buhari should be arrested and made to account for his reckless statements, described the ex-Nigerian leader as a fanatic with an alleged link with the dreaded sect. The CAN President also noted that it was shocking that Buhari would be indulging in careless statements while all well-meaning Nigerians were praying for the success of the military operations in the three northern states, where members of the Islamic sect had increasingly wreaked havoe. According to him, Buhari as a national leader should have been more concerned about the killings of innocent ones by the sect members and the success of the troops rather than acting as a megaphone for the sect. But in his reaction, the Publicity Secretary of CPC, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, told The PUNCH that CAN, under Oritsejafor, had become more political than religious. He said, “The CAN, under Oritsejafor, is more political than religious; in any clime, religious leaders have always been the moral conscience of the nation in ensuring that the ship of state is not in peril. “After the incendiary protests of the 2011 elections, Pastor Oritsejafor, without any verifiable evidence, called for the arrest of General Muhammadu Buhari for allegedly being responsible for the protests,” he said.
