VBCampaign: Why Many Nigerian Pastors are False Teachers
By: Deji Yesufu
A lot of people underestimate the power of the media. You however get an inkling as to how powerful media, whether it be broadcast, social, or print, is when you remember how the military government utilized them years back in Nigeria. When a military coup occurs, the soldiers go to the media first. They invade a radio station and broadcast their message to the nation: “…we are not only in government, we are now in power…”, they used to say. And I remember those words with some nostalgia, especially as I recall my father huddled around a radio set in far-away Zaria the morning the government of Shehu Shagari was overthrown by soldiers loyal to Major General Muhammadu Buhari in December 1983.
One group of individuals who quickly realized the power of the media and used it to their advantage were Pentecostal Pastors in the 1980s/90s. The likes of Benson Idahosa, Ayo Oritsejafor, Tunde Bakare and others very quickly latched on to the ability of the television to bring their messages to Nigerians and they invested a lot into TV broadcasts of their messages. They reaped a fortune in the process because people could easily watch them from the comfort of their homes; find the churches in the locality; and then go on to become life-long members of these churches. The pastors invested in the media and they earned a fortune from members’ tithes and offerings.
That is how church became big business in Nigeria. If you follow this narrative, you then begin to understand why the same pastors became incredibly uncomfortable with the emergence of social media. Social media simply came to compete with their space. I remember when I gave a talk to Television Continental on tithing and the video went viral. One Ibadan pastor told his congregation that I was seeking cheap popularity via social media. The same pastor forgot that many of us know how much his church invested (and is still investing) in the local broadcasts of his messages to Ibadan via the NTA Ibadan – which was the avenue through which I found out about the church in the first place. Media is media – it could either be social, print, or broadcast. All of us are trying to reach men with a message; the sin is not the medium of broadcast but the substance being sent out. This is what brings me to Joshua Selman.
Selman is about five years younger than me but one might consider that we are of the same generation. We even went to the same school – Ahmadu Bello University. We attended the same faculty – engineering. Although he read Chemical and I read Electrical Engineering. I also suspect that I had long graduated from ABU before he came in. I write all these to say that despite whatever we share in common, I did not know who Selman was until some young people working with me at the University of Ibadan began to tell me that if I would succeed at reaching the Christian students on that campus with the gospel, I would have to be able to refute Joshua Selman. Sincerely, I did not know what to refute about him. It was enough to know that he is a false teacher since he regards David Oyedepo and Kenneth Hagin as examples in ministry. He was simply guilty by association.
I however took the time to listen to him via YouTube and I came to understand why he is a false teacher. He combines false doctrine with eloquence, suave, and false humility. All of these add up to bring listeners to him. And unlike his predecessors who used the broadcast/terrestrial media to reach their listeners, Selman has taken over the social media space among Nigerian Pentecostals. I still did not have enough in my arsenal to write on Selman, so I asked a young man to write the essay, while I edited and added a few important remarks. That essay has become the most-read article on my blog. And every time I publish it, people come to read it. If I wanted cheap popularity, I could spend all my time refuting these false teachers. But I have come to realize that showing what is false (apologetics) is just as important as teaching what is true. So, I do both. In this article, however, I want to show you why many Nigerian pastors are false teachers.
They teach false doctrine. Christianity stands and falls on doctrine, doctrine, and doctrine. What you teach, not how you look; not what you wear; not how much you own; but your doctrine is everything. It will determine whether you and your listeners will be saved at the end of life (1 Timothy 4:16). Teaching, teaching, and teaching, is all that Christianity is. Many Nigerian pastors are therefore false teachers because they teach a gospel of health and wealth – the prosperity gospel. The trouble with the gospel of prosperity is that it comes in many shades and it requires some discernment to know it. There are those pastors who teach full-blown prosperity – all they talk about is money. They tell you how God has blessed them because they now own houses abroad; they have churches abroad; their children school in foreign countries; etc. At the core of their message is money, money, and money.
These are full-blown prosperity gospelers and many Nigerians have become quite discerning of them now and they are beginning to lose market. Others are less subtle. Their own brand of the prosperity gospel comes in the guise of the Word of Faith teaching. They teach healing, prosperity, faith, positive confession, and that suffering is sin. These are the disciples of Kenneth Hagin. They tell you that Hagin wrote “Midas Touch” and condemned the first group, but they do not tell you that Hagin never repented of his own false gospel till he died. A third group are those who have succeeded in taking the Word of Faith doctrine into orthodox churches. So, you see these young men who used to be in Pentecostal churches, but who have now gone to mainstream seminaries. They have imbibed some orthodoxy but at the heart of their teaching is still Hagin. They bring the Pentecostal/Prosperity Gospel messages to the Orthodox churches and because no one can refute them successfully, they are running amok with these messages. It is this latter group that has the like of Joshua Selman as a colleague. In any rate, one thing all these men share is false doctrine. The reason why my article is read by many is because they find it surprising that anyone will call Selman a false teacher. Why? Because they all teach essentially what Selman teaches. Making all of them false teachers.
Their teachings are not reforming society. Societies are ruled by ideas. There is a big difference between the Western world and the Eastern parts of our world because the two parts of the world, despite increasing in modernity at an almost equal rate, have differing ideologies. The West developed on a Judeo-Christian worldview, coupled with a capitalist mentality founded upon biblical principles that the man who does not work, should not eat. Unfortunately, the eastern parts of the world were built on socialism – a Marxist/Lenin worldview that teaches that society can be run with every man on equal footing. Marxism despises religion and the guardrails that the laws of God bring to society are not inherent in a socialist system. The result is what we see in Vladmir Putin today – autocracy. This was the point George Orwell made in his evergreen book “The Animal Farm”. While the West believes in freedom of ideas, the East is run by the idea of the man in power.
Nigeria, on the other hand, claims to have a strong Christian population – with our pastors all over television preaching a gospel. Yet, the one single prevailing ideology in our society is gbajue. Gbajue is a Yoruba word for deception. It means literally to hit someone in the face, and while he is dazed to take away his possessions. The gbajue culture took root in Nigeria following the affluence that hit the nation after the oil boom of the early 1970s. Nigerians suddenly discovered that with very little effort and by knowing a few people in power, you can get your share of the national cake. Those who could not get rich via these means, sought to take advantage of those who had the money already. And since the rich themselves got money very easily, they did not mind losing the money. A culture of deception was entrenched by the military government and many of those who ruled the country following military rule were themselves military men in civilian garb.
If the gospel that these Pastors preached possessed any power at all, and with the wide influence that these men have over the minds of Nigerian churchgoers, who went to church every Sunday to listen to them, this culture of deception ought to have eased out of the country. Instead, the churches themselves perpetuated gbajue when it was discovered that those who possessed easy money would not mind parting with it through donations in the name of tithes and offerings. The churches have grown rich, the people’s moral outlook remains unchanged, the society is depraved, and the nation is known more for corruption than anything else in the comity of nations. If the gospel these men teach their people is the gospel of Jesus Christ, there should have been a marked difference in the moral temperature of the country. After listening to a gospel of health and wealth for half a century, Nigeria has only been worse off. There is no greater proof that the men who teach these messages are false teachers.
On the 13th of February, 1976, soldiers in civilian garb waylaid the man who was head of the Nigerian state at that time – Major General Muritala Mohammed. Mohammed was quite radical in thinking – he did not believe in much security. He drove in his 504 Peugeot car with his driver and aid-de-camp seated in the front seats. They stopped briefly to observe traffic light when these men who had waylaid him opened fire on his vehicle. They put enough bullets into the car to ensure that all three men were killed. The man who led that violence was Lt. Col. Buka Suwa Dimka. Immediately after they shot Muritala, they moved into the Federal Radio Station which was just some distance away from the place Muritala was felled. They announced the coup by stating that Muritala had been killed – they were not only in government, they were now in power. Olusegun Obasanjo, Muritala’s assistant, went into hiding immediately.
The man who saved the day that day was a relatively unknown colonel, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida. Babangida and many of the men who carried out the coup were course mates and the burden fell on him to go and talk to his colleagues to lay down their arms. The radio station was surrounded by soldiers still loyal to Muritala and there was no point fighting on, increasing the bloodshed. Despite knowing that the coup plotters had earmarked him for death, Babangida walked into the radio station unarmed. He said when he got there, the whole place was reeking with alcohol – the boys were as drunk as a skunk – they knew that the coup had failed and could only numb the pain with booze. Babangida told the boys to lay down their arms and they did. Whatever else Babangida’s name has become in the history of Nigeria, what he did that day to quell bloodshed should never be forgotten.
My point in telling that story is to remind us of the power of the media. The purpose of the media is to inform and educate the populace. It was the media that the new generation churches ceased – almost forcefully – and used to propagate their false messages. We know that those messages are false today because they have not changed the moral fabric of Nigeria. Social media is another medium where messages can be used to reach the populace. It is a lot cheaper to use – this is why that man said I was embarking on cheap publicity. I use all the social media handles that my time can afford me to broadcast on. Right now, I need to employ a webmaster – someone who will put my resources on all social media platforms. These things do not come cheap and those who can invest in it will reap the fruit of it in the future. If the gospel I preach is true, God will provide the resources I need to pass my message to my listeners and my testimony thus far is that God has been faithful. I do not need to solicit funds from my readers and listeners. What I need from you is to believe the gospel. To do this, you will first have to “unbelieve” the false gospel messages you have learnt from many of these Pastors – the leading purveyor of this false gospel message being no other person than Apostle Joshua Selman.
Thank you very much for reading.

Source: Honestly do not care if Oyedepo and Selman are false teachers, they could be, God knows. But your premises for such label being that they failed to affect the state of Nigeria is weak and invalid. Apart from Jonah in scripture how many prophets could effect the moral state of their nation, we have few examples in the time of Daniel, Elijah, the judges but when we come to Jesus. Did the early Christians affect the way the people and the government was runned. If they had such effect then what happened. How did the Roman Catholics come about, coupled with their historical atrocities. Let's not continue on that, but the said men have also preached morals and the like and you may say maybe their lifestyles did back up what they said. But why is that? Can't a man be wealthy and righteous? Is it a sin to have money? If they love money then it is different for they serve money not God, and that can also be seen in a person's lifestyle. And maybe like in the days of Jeremiah they have listened to false prophets while silenting the true ones. There will always be false prophets but the proof of a true prophet isn't in how the society is affected by their message but how true their message is. Every one has a choice to accept or reject the truth. |

hookupagent1: What practices does it mean for someone to be tied up with palm fronds both head to toe and both hands and legs and different candles lit up and incense for prayer in cherubim and seraphim church, and also given oil, I have been observing some strange things in my life ever since I went for prayer in cherubim and seraphim where the man did all that to me but few months I have been having sleepless nights and depressed and having strange things and feelings all over my body ever since I went there for prayer after the prophet told me he saw a prophecy about me hindering my progress, but things have gone from bad to worse after going there as I now feel like I'm empty inside of me and barely sleep at night, always wake up before 2:00 am and you are a hookup agent? You need prayers and deliverance above all you need Jesus in your life. And the only way is to repent of your sins and believe the gospel about the kingdom of God, receive the baptism of thr Holy Spirit and bear fruit of the Holy Spirit. |

VBCampaign: The words of Satan are in scripture is a pointer to the fact that we live in a world full of demons and Deception. But the Holy Bible are the very words of God bc the Bible, as a collective, do not present the words of Satan but the words of God, especially such as point us to salvation to come.
When Selman teaches that the Bible is not the word of God, and adds that Paul's words are not necessarily the words of God, Selman is contending against God himself who says Paul's words are Scripture: 2 Peter 3:15-16. see how you jump into conclusion about both the bible and not surprisingply about what Selman may have taught. In your mind now, a true false teacher will come out and condemn the bible. |

VBCampaign: JOSHUA SELMAN IS A FALSE TEACHER
By: Biodun Shotola and Deji Yesufu
“A dog barks when his master is attacked. I would be a coward if I saw that the truth of God is attacked and yet remained silent.” – John Calvin
We acknowledge, along with the rest of the Christian community, that God operates in mysterious ways and may employ even the most unqualified individuals to tend to his flock. However, we reject the notion that a man who consistently assails the inspired scripture and preaches messages contrary to the holy scriptures can be deemed “a man sent from God.” Joshua Selman, a self-proclaimed apostle from Nigeria, has been lauded by certain “Christians” for his purported feat of shutting down the largest indoor arena in the UK. These “Christians” consider Selman’s achievement in the UK as a sign of a 21st-century revival.
Yet, as disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ, we stand in opposition to this man, his false doctrines, and his so-called revival. We choose to distance ourselves from the fallacious belief that a man, merely by invoking God’s name or amassing a considerable following, is divinely ordained to spearhead a revival. It would have been preferable, or at the very least prudent, if his works had not been attributed to our Lord. We shall persistently and resolutely employ all the resources that our God has provided us to denounce this imposter. While we empathize with our critics, who are easily swayed by their emotions, we derive no satisfaction from being labeled “holier than thou” or “assistant to Jesus.” Our critics may hurl insults and utter whatever they wish, but it is our duty to expose false teachers.
We shall refrain from laboring to expound in detail on the erroneous teachings of this man. Such an undertaking would be superfluous and an article cannot document all the false messages of Joshua Selman. Perhaps we may briefly touch upon a few of them. This is not an act of cowardice or an attempt to misconstrue the man’s sermons. Many sincere Christians have already highlighted the egregiousness of this man’s teachings. However, instead of adopting the Berean attitude of scrutinizing Selman’s message, his followers and sympathizers have resorted to name-calling.
In one of his messages, Selman attempted to explain the involvement of Joseph of Arimathea in the burial of Jesus Christ, stating, “The name of Jesus is so weighty that it requires financial resources to exalt it before the world.” However, this teaching by Selman deviates from scriptural truth, the teachings of the apostolic fathers, and the spiritual leaders of our faith. Nowhere in the Bible did Jesus or any of the Old Testament prophets suggest that financial resources are necessary to elevate the name of Jesus. In another video, Selman boldly declared to his audience that not every verse in the Bible is the word of God. He went on to say, “There are many things Paul said in the Bible that are inconsistent with the character of God.” This statement directly undermines the divine inspiration of the word of God and amounts to an attack on its authenticity.
In yet another video, Joshua Selman tells the story of how he obtained his apostolic credentials. He talks about meeting Apostle Paul and conversing with him. Yet again, he meets with no other than Jesus Christ, who imparts apostolic authority and prophetic mantles on him. In the video, titled “MY ENCOUNTER WITH APOSTLE PAUL AND THE LORD JESUS”, Selman recounts other encounters with both biblical figures and historical Christian figures – who are long dead. It is the stock in trade of false teachers to employ vision of encounters with divine beings, like angels, to legitimize their claims to the apostolic. When you remember that the foremost modus operandi of false teachers is to resort to dreams and revelation, rather than depend on the simplicity of teaching scripture, you understand that Selman is yet another false Apostle – a false teacher that the Bible command we beware of.
Charles Spurgeon, in a sermon delivered on March 18th, 1885, regarding the Bible, eloquently proclaimed, “Thou book of immense authority, thou art a proclamation from the Emperor of Heaven; far be it from me to employ my reason to contradict thee. Reason! Your role is to stand and discern the meaning of this volume, not to dictate what this book ought to convey. Come, my reason, my intellect, sit down and listen, for these words are the very words of God.”
Certain critics, driven more by their emotions than by scripture, adamantly assert that the gathering of such a multitude can only be a work of God. They contend that it is inconceivable for someone who is not a true apostle of God to attract thousands to their meetings. We remind our critics of the inspired words of Peter:
2 Peter 2:2 – And MANY will follow their destructive ways because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. (Emphasis added)
In a rather derisive manner, our critics have asked us, “What have you done to preach Christ’s gospel?” While we could respond to our critics with a detailed account of our endeavors, our sense of piety restrains us from succumbing to the sin of pride. Instead, we implore our critics to focus on the matter at hand and refrain from constructing straw man arguments. Is the message that Selman preaches aligned with the teachings of Christ? If Christ were to descend today, would he commend Selman’s efforts or rebuke him? How else should we describe a man who fails to proclaim the excellences of Christ? It is far from acceptable for us to remain silent when our Savior is diminished and a man is exalted. We shall not permit an impostor to usurp the honor that belongs to our God.
A newly converted Christian, who has embraced the true Gospel and recently placed their faith in Christ Jesus, would find it utterly preposterous to be instructed that they must journey to Abeokuta and Lagos in order to succeed in life – as Joshua Selman once suggested in a sermon. The new Christian understands the redemption offered by Christ from the consequences of sin. They acknowledge that they possess no inherent goodness and will never be capable of fulfilling God’s righteousness through their own efforts. They find solace in the good news that the sins of sinners can be transferred to Jesus Christ, while the righteousness of Christ is imputed to the sinner.
Scripture contains numerous admonitions regarding false teachers. None of these impostors would brazenly declare to a congregation, “I am false and an enemy of Christ.” Instead, they present themselves in sheep’s clothing. They may employ the language of the chosen, yet they are deceivers. They may invoke the name of Christ and perform miracles in His name, but they are enemies of God. We implore our readers, who may perceive our fervor as unrestrained, to reflect upon the words of Jesus Christ:
Matthew 24:24 – For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.

MaxInDHouse: This is where you people misconstrue the word of God and continue leading yourselves astray.
The word "REPENT" can only be applied when you know where you're wrong but as you have not ever discussed anything with your audience to point out what he or she is doing that's wrong what sin exactly do you expect him or her to REPENT of?
The word was first used only among Israelites when John the baptist and Jesus of Nazareth walked among them, this people knew God's laws so they know exactly why they need to repent as in turn back from what their God forbids but you walking up to a total stranger who doesn't know you or your God talkless of what your God requires then telling such a person to repent makes no practical sense!
That's why Jesus said:
For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. John 17:8-9 NIV
Despite being Israelites and knowing the laws of their God Jesus has a special message to deliver which totally differs from what Moses told their forefathers {Deuteronomy 18:18-19} so even though someone knew and is obeying the laws of God which was passed on to them by Moses such a person still needs to listen to what Jesus brought as a new message for them {Luke 18:18-23} otherwise such a person can't be said to have repented for real until he accepts Jesus' message and start acting on what he heard {Matthew 7:24-27} that's why Jesus only prayed with and for those who are with him who have received the message and acting on it!
So work on that not just going about throwing up words that you don't really know it's meaning! you are full of words 🤔 😂😂 you just keep talking even when no one is asking you 🤣🤣🤣 "Throwing up words" are you not being a hypocrite 🤣🤣🤣 Leave me o, let me repent in peace from my sins. Mr pharisees that knows everything 😂🤣🤣🤣 Sinners come and repent and pray with me oooooo, come let's repent together Luke 18:10-14 O God have mercy, for I don't know what to say, I believe and repent, I will love and obey. Rom.8.26 And the Holy Spirit helps us in our distress. For we don't even know what we should pray for, nor how we should pray. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. Rom.8.27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God's own will. (NLT) |

Now you can continue praying with whoever wants to pray with you i'm for God's Kingdom and it's righteousness. Matthew 6:34
Farewell! I am a sinner but you're righteous 😭😭 Sinners come and repent and pray with me oooooo, come let's repent together Luke 18:10-14 O God have mercy, for I don't know what to say, I believe and repent, I will love and obey. MaxInDHouse: What you're asking is illogical and our of place Jesus never prayed with people who doesn't agree with his opinion on matters.
This is what he said:
"because I have given them the sayings that you gave me, and they have accepted them and have certainly come to know that I came as your representative, and they have believed that you sent me. I make request concerning them; I make request, not concerning the world, but concerning those whom you have given me, because they are yours" John 17 8-9
So Jesus only pray with people who agree with him on thought not just anybody he sees! Come pray in the Holy Spirit, let him help your weaknesses for you know nothing 😁 but God knows your heart. |

If your righteousness is like a filthy rag how do you now trust in your righteousness? Do know that the righteousness through faith is not gotten by performance but a gift to those who believe in God's salvation. Self righteousness is exactly what you are trusting. Faith in Jesus leads to good works and holiness because faith in Jesus it includes following his leadership due to trust in him instead of trusting our performance in other words we do righteousness but we don't put our faith on our performance but on the Lord Jesus. Answer which questions? 😒 Nevermind, no be exam, I don't have to answer 😁 If you believe Jesus is uncreated that's your business, it doesn't change that he is the son of God. If anyone keeps telling themselves that they believe in Jesus, calling him Lord Lord, without righteous and obedience, na him go still tell them get away from me you workers of iniquity for you have not done the will of my Father. 🚶🏾♂️🚶🏾♂️🚶🏾♂️ |

Truuth: They are one and united in will.
God-the-father makes all the decisions, they are encrypted or entained in his word and done or carried out by the spirit.
Without the word, nothing can be done.. And without the spirit nothing can be done.
They are not equal in power, and their method of operation is different. In otherwords, the way the spirit would do something is different from how the father would do it.
You need to work with God personally for you to understand. okay so why this response? |
Christianity Etc › Re: I No Longer Go To Church On Sundays, I'd Rather Watch Religious Programs On Tv by gohf: 11:49am On Apr 07, 2024 |
Firefly2017: So for some years now I don't go for Sunday services regularly, reason being that I always come back feeling empty and unfilled, however, I prefer to watch these American pastors on TV and I must say I have grown a lot spiritually and I can confidently say I'm a better person for it, I truly understand the Gospel and the essence of this life from listening to these men of God. Their way of teaching the Gospel is totally different from our African pastors who focus only on prosperity, without teaching on how to connect with God by the way you live your daily life. And truly I do not feel any guilt or burden in my heart for stopping church as I eagerly look forward to spending time listening to these men of God on TV every weekend.
My question now is, I'm I wrong for not going to church on Sundays, since it is written, to not forsake the gathering of belivers when you are in pain and need encouragement who will come to you, will it be the man on TV, will he pass through the TV and come to you. Ministry is for we ministers to equip those we minister to, to be of service to the body of Christ and new believers. The question is, what do you do after listening to televised or online messages? |
