koonbey: Lol the colonialism nonsense is one of those things that makes you feel like laughing and crying at the same time.
Nigeria receives around £150 - 200million in UK foreign aid annually, apart from other countries. I wonder what many would do if they realised that a chunk of the development they see at home is not even from the Nigerian government but from this aid, even in the health sector - primary healthcare centers, schools and such.
It's abroad that our people all become activists and expert public administrators cum economists with answers to all the problems other countries face. They'll ignore the causes of some of these policies and focus on the ones that'll allow them to whinge and moan while claiming one 'ism after another.
Anyway, here's the report - https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11737185/Health-tourists-155-countries-run-219million-unpaid-NHS-bills.html. For those who don't like DM, here's one from The Sun, albeit older - https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/15684135/hospital-debts-health-tourists-40-million/. This is a big lie, such money is even small to cater to a population of over 200 million. And do you think the Uk does not have substantial economic benefits from Nigeria? Do you guys think Nigeria is that beggarly? Do you know the amount of money the Uk realise from direct investments in Nigeria? Do you think it's Charity? From the aviation sector, oil and gas and several others you think it's a joke? As someone said earlier, it's the Nigerian govt that is not wise in demanding more from the Uk like India is doing to gain more economically. Whatever aid Nigeria collects is a drop in the ocean compared to what the Uk makes from Nigeria. You can have your political opinions but don't spread false narratives here. Thank you |

I am about doing this and I intend knowing the cost before approaching HR I think they will just pay for another COS which is 199 pounds but prices are going up soon too with the new announcements. But confirm from your HR. Thought it’s a cost for the employer |

DadR: Greetings, my people!
The news of the imminent significant increase in IHS and Visa Fee don wake silent reader up o! Please, I need your kind opinion.
We are currently on Tier 4 visas which will expire towards the end of Sept. 2023. Also, my spouse has just been cleared by her school hence we are now eligible to apply for postgraduate study work visa .
While we are still exploring the possibilities of securing a job with Tier 2 sponsorship, our plan was to wait till a week before the expiration of our Tier 4 visas before applying for PSW visa with the hope of securing a Tier 2 sponsorship before then. But now, we are worried that the proposed increment in IHS and visa fees might take effect before the end of Sept 2023.
So, please, do you think this increment might happen sooner than we think or will they announce on a particular day and state that it will take effect in a month's time, for instance?
Should we just apply now to hedge the risk of not incurring any additional costs?
If the above is yes and we later apply, in a short while, to switch from PSW to Tier 2, will the Home Office refund the unutilized portion of the IHS paid for 2 years PSW?
Make una no vex for my long story o, I no fit sleep like dis cos na fam of 3 we be and dis additional cost no be small tin!
Thank you! I think you should calm down, there should be further announcements on when the new increase will kick off so keep an eye on it. If the increase will kick in before your September when you visa expires then I will advise you apply for your psw before the date the new increase starts. For now pursue your desire for work visa, you never know what’s ahead. |

Zahra29: The average EU citizen is content to remain in their country though, riots and all.
However the govt knows that they are many others who will come here no matter how much the IHS is. This is the kind of arrogance that got the uk to where it is now. Those who wanted to stay are here already through the EU settlement scheme. The Uk is just fantasising, hardly will any EU citizen be willing to pay that much to access a service they can easily get for free in their home country. |

This graph says it all. Expect a steeper decline from the EU with this new levy. Good luck crafting a deal that undermines the 4 pillars of the EU or getting EU folks to pay uni fees, IHS fee, T2 e.t.c and fund your 7% wage demand. Talk of slave labour.
I'm still wondering what the sweet spot is The EU has labour shortages too so which deal are they talking about. Abeg people should say things more reasonable jor, the same EU they chased away? |

jedisco: Just stumbled on this, oddly, when I search they're not many mainstream UK media reporting it. The UK openly admits immigration fees as an essential source of revenue. Simply means that for workers to get their 6-7% wage rise, there has to be a minimum number of immigrants coming thru. The recently touted 8yr wait period for an ilr makes more sense now. I wonder what those who 'did not vote for black and brown people' think about the this. Perhaps, they would get EU citizens willing to pay so much for little in return.
Take a married 28yo who comes here for masters. They'd pay:
Initial visa fee Initial ihs fee for 1-2 yrs Uni school fees
Then; PSW fee IHS fee again for 1-2 yrs
Then; Tier 2 visa fee IHS fee for 5 yrs. ILR fee Passport fee
All these are aside income tax and NI and very importantly, the economic footprint they bring.
After giving 8-9 years of their productive life to the the UK economy, a whole lot of these people would still be lower bracket income earners. The UK adds to their life but in far less measure than what they have brought.
Reason why I asked how many Brits of similar age have contributed as much. Without immigration, this economy would crumble under its own weight Honestly am shocked that a British PM could openly say they will have to fund pay rises from what legal immigrants will pay. Though to some it looks as a subtle way to reduce net migration but I see it as a final punch to the arguments the right wing extremists always have about the influx of immigrants. Sunak just openly agreed with your conclusion here that this economy will collapse without immigration. Anybody still arguing should just go and watch that Sunak video. The man may have hurt many Brits egos with this. |

Got two analyst role 1. One in Scotland (25k annually) 1-year contract, full-time. Obviously no sponsorship.
2. In London (28k annually) permanent, full-time, with sponsorship
Note: Both are hybrid (1-2days office) Been living in Scotland right from day one in Uk. Just relocate to London temporarily and get your sponsorship, once you switch your visa after one year, start looking for roles according to your desired location that will offer sponsorship too, it's easier for companies to switch you from one tier 2 to another especially if it's the same occupation code as it cost them far less. Hope this helps |

heroshark: I don't understand what you guys meant by get other visas?
Having other visas (which in most cases are visit visa) will not save anyone from the UK immigration wahala if the time comes. You can't use those visas to immigrate or even work on those visas. I have a long-term US visa and Schegen visa (Swiss issued) yet they are absolutely useless for immigration purposes.
Except you plan to travel and then turn illegal immigrant. The problem with some of us is perspective, while some of us are very open-minded using the opportunity as legal UK residents to open doors for ourselves to other Western nations. For your info, some of these other nations are becoming more dynamic in their visa offerings as they now allow you to switch visitor visas to work visas if you get a job offer there. For example, if I work with one of the big four in the UK or any other large orgnisation, I can apply for jobs in Canada with one of the large organisations, with my Canada visitor visa, the organisation already sees me as a serious person cos they know with that visitor visa I have, easily they can switch me to a work visa ( this is valid till 2025). Even the US announce such earlier in the year when thousands were losing jobs and had the scare of leaving the country since their work visas were tied to the company they were fired from. Even Germany is going the same route so you see times indeed are changing and that's the perspective some of us are seeing things from. |

LionInZion: Once upon a time, a man sent out 1,000 invitations for a feast in his house. The invitees were happy, booked flight tickets, bought new dresses, and packed enough luggage for the 3-day event. They also brought gold and silver to spend at the feast.
But shortly after they arrived at the occasion, the host started complaining about their presence. “They are too many!” “I need my privacy!” “These aren’t the type of guests I was expecting!” The host whined every minute.
“But you chose the guests yourself, handwritten their names and signed each invite,” his wife reminded him. “Yes, I know but still I want them out!”
So, he decided to turn the venue into a ‘hostile environment’ towards the guests. He started by removing their seats. He ordered his servants to remove food and drinks from their tables and feed them to the dogs.
When the guests have had enough, they started leaving one after the other But shortly after, the host realised that the merchandise tables he set up at various corners of the venue were experiencing low patronage. A week before the feast, he had shipped in expensive goods on credit, banking on the huge profit he’d make off his guests.
Just as he pondered the imminent loss from the goods, the servants called out. “Master, the freezers are full and we have nowhere to store the food.” “Also, the dogs refused to eat the little we served them, as they aren’t used to the taste,” another servant announced.
Now, it suddenly dawned on him the loss and wastage he was about to suffer So, he brought out another round of invitations to be sent to the same set of guests But this time around with so many promises and relaxed eligibility criteria He would also sell the merchandise at a cheaper price to mitigate his loss
But then, the invitees weren’t really surprised. They know the host very well. This is what he does every year.
The story of one generous, I mean very generous country. well packaged, wish it can be published or even sent to the parliament |

koonbey: The PSW visa is very affordable for any graduate, if they truly had access to the money they had proven that they have to support their living expenses for the duration of their studies, while applying for the visa.
The fees for the visa are easily covered by just two or three months of that 20-hour week limit, especially if you factor in the unrestricted vacation work periods.
And IHS? FHS it’s 600 odd pounds per year for unlimited mostly free access to a world-class healthcare system. In that same US some people are hailing a ‘simple’ ambulance trip to the hospital and treatment for a day for heat exhaustion cost a friend of mine over $3,000 recently. There people are often afraid to call ambulances even when they clearly need urgent medical help.
The ‘average Brit’ you people are slandering here has been paying into the funds that made up that system all their life via direct and indirect taxes, and their parents and ancestors for hundreds of years paid into it as well. And they are still paying the same taxes and NI contributions and whatnot as you are today, but 600 pounds per year is exorbitant?
Haba mana. Haba.
Plus, after all they said on this thread that migrants to the UK from Nigeria are like people living in Banana Island, among other Nigerians.
We all know why it looks like it’s too unaffordable for many graduates, abi? So tell us - Is the UK government to blame for people not having access to the money they claimed they had or for people not planning properly for the dependents they brought? Affordable? That’s a big lie, how many students are earning enough to pay for the post graduate visa. Political correctness won’t get us anywhere. The proof of funds are living cost funds and school fees and does not factor psw visa cost in any way. |

Zahra29: Really? Even on this forum how many times have certain jobs/ sectors been scoffed at? a PSW holder can work anywhere so why are they not plugging the gaps in certain sectors? How many are happy to work in care medium/long term or training to be an electrician or carpenter, when such occupations are looked down on in their home country.
You know that the average Nigerian and Indian wants a high powered job or to own their own business, so the reality is that even if they were given visas to fill these roles, their aim would be to flee to a more befitting occupation the first chance they get, and so the cycle would continue with the government having to print out another 5M visas in 2 years time to plug the shortages - unless they imposed strict measures like banning visa holders from switching to a different sector or they do like the UAE and decouple some employment visas from the settlement route. But they would be labelled fascist if they did that.
This is why the current model isn't working nor is it sustainable. Your points at times doesn’t reflect current realities. The psw visa is not cheap for the average graduate, most can’t afford it especially when as students they could only work 20hrs a week. To apply for psw you need almost 2k, where will a graduate see that amount after just recovering from sch fees and other expenses, those with families can’t afford paying almost 2k per individual which makes many settling for care visas (far cheaper) which restrict them to only the health sector, leaving only dependents perhaps to fill roles in other sectors. The dependents now have been banned from coming to the uk. Can you now see that it’s the uk that is not serious about filling job shortages? The Uk govt have themselves to blame if the current model is not working. It has nothing to do with migrants as they only go for the readily available visas they can afford to get or sustain their right to work. The uk government know what to do but are they sincere? |
