Friends, Countrymen, Nairalanders!

I said some time ago about this issue of goal keeper is the least of our worries right now and time will prove this to be correct. A few posts ago, I asked us a question, which would you prefer between a bad goalkeeper, strong attack, and strong defence OR a good goalkeeper, good defence , bad attack. No on has been able to respond.

I will say it again, the goal keepin department is the least of our worries right now considering the fact that if we play a brand of attacking football heavily based on possession, our goal keepers may largely be untested in a competitive match.

[b]What should be our major concern right now is how to get at least 2 replacements for Mikel before the world cup starts and start blendin them in. Which footballer has vision? Which player has accurate passes ? [/b]And can hold the midfield as well. I have said it before whether sarcastically or whatever, we can play without a goalie. Let us worry about someone to deputize for mikel. Scouts should come up with names of quality players that can do ball distribution. We have seen good goalies being messed up by a bad defence before so dont make it look like if Enyeama keeps the goal, he aint gonna concede.

June is almost here. Close ur eyes and open it and the world cup is upon us. Wake up everyone and stop debating what will not in the end matter. The sad news is our opponents are also analysing us. I dare say they even know this thread exists. We are the ones giving them the exposé on our team. They know what to do to take out Mikel. And once Mikel is out, the sting i our attack is gone. We are here debating goalies..... ok O.

I rest my case
This is another weak area in our team just like the goal keeping aspect, we can't do much about this too. our prayer is that mikel stays fit. Even a half fit mikel still looks irreplaceable. Looking for a new player as back up for mikel is a tall order now cos apart from being a player, mikel is a leader, what we should thinking is that in case mikel is not on the pitch, who will be leader on the pitch, not talking about deputy captain but a deputy leader that can also command the boys on the field of play when the match looks too difficult.

That is one word some pretend is not important.

You want to make a 19years old inexperienced goalie your first choice to the FIFA world cup and feel cool with that?

We laboured hard to get this world cup ticket abeg.
truth be told we have a goal keeping crisis that we can't do much about. Ikeme's illness has truly opened our yansh wella. No wonder great sides always make they have at least two solid keepers any day any time which we normally do before as we have never had this too bad before.

For me I can't even bank on any keeper now even with Enyeama. I hope we would learn our lesson going forward cos it looks as if we retired some of our former keepers too early despite the fact that some of them are still active even signing up for clubs in recent times. We over relied on Ikeme and see what it has cost us.

for me, it's time for us to actually bring out the best in what we already have. For me compared to 2014, we have a stronger bench now. You can't call a bench that will have musa, etebo, ogu, ebuehi, aina even ihenacho [if Ighalo is used], simon [cos iwobi is ahead] a weak bench. Though we have very few areas of weakness but am too careful in looking for new players now. All in the name of looking for the best in 2014, players like azeez, uzoenyi, nwofor, ameobi, uchebo made the world cup team and still it looks as if we had no bench.

Rohr has done well in having a current pool of players I think he has not even finished exhausted. All I can say is we should be very careful and learn from our past mistakes.

The thing is we are always too quick to push away an old player when you see a new player even if the new player is untested. How can someone prefer Agbo to Omeruo?
A new player that has no pedigree would always appeal to them more than a proven player.

Some say I am resistant to changes and stuffs like that. If left to some even Mikel Agu would have replaced Mikel Obi.
reason we should be careful with the way we are throwing up names of players that we assumed are better than the current players. Omeruo's experience can never be discarded. The likes of omeruo, mikel, onazi, moses, musa 2014 world cup experience I think is very valuable to this current team

I don't like using hindsight to judge. At that world cup, even the much heralded Vic Moses was absolutely poor. His contribution was dire. If things had gone South for him at club level and found himself in Kazakhstan like Nathan Oduwa, you wouldn't have singled him out as one of the good players.

You forgot that prior to the world cup, these same set of players played friendly games and impressed against Catalonia, Peru, Scotland and Italy

Nigerians practically begged for Azeez and Uzoenyi to be introduced. Uche Nwofor impressed massively with Venlo and was the top scorer for the flying Eagles in Colombia.
so all the blame can't go to keshi alone then, we Nigerians piled up pressure on him to select some players which is what we are also doing now. This is what I keep saying, when things go wrong, we blame the coach forgetting that we also made input into the team selection.

This is why am too cautious on the way we are throwing up names of players who were never in the radar before. God help us o!

I am a 100% believer in this team and I am trusting them to to go all the way. I oppose fear: fear from those who call for youth because they are afraid some of their choice players will be displaced if the old guys are invited. I oppose fear from those who believe the team will fail unless the old legs are brought back.

My perspective is simply guided by what will help the team post quality performance. I don't care about categories as such.

Finally always think about this word INVITATION. It would help you alot. To be invited doesn't mean you will make the team but many of you argue that this players should not even be invited at all.
thanks for the advise even though I feel slighted, yes thy can be invited but I have seen players who were invited, flopped and still their poor display was very well defended on this thread. Personally am not emotional concerning any particular player, if they are doing well let's be honest about it and they don't do well, let's stop making silly excuses for them, don't want to mention examples to avoid further argument.

I still stand by my earlier point that it's all mere assumptions that some players become suddenly better than the current players we have after we have qualified for the world cup. sounds ridiculous!

My man you are right on Zambia match and Westerhoff prefrence for serious midfieder.

I remember Jayjay had his first appearance in national team with U 20 at Mauritius 93 with Kanu Nwankwo,Taribo West,Emma Babayaro,Andrew Aikhomogbe, Emma Teberen,Aboidun Obafemi.

Jayjay was damn too beautiful to watch but very unserious player like his elder bro Emma Okocha..It seem skills flow in the family but they don't appreciate it.Emma Okocha left football too sudden after Algiers 90 until Jayjay showed up in 1993 playing with Frankfurt, check his goal against Karlsruhe with Oliver Khan in goal you will understand Jayjay was just playing the game for fun.

Then Jayjay was damn young but i will not say too young but Westerhoff realised it earlier that youthful exuberance was affecting Jayjay. In our last WC qualifier match against Algeria Jayjay was on the bench cos Westerhoff knew what was at stake.

If you noticed very well during US 94 Westerhoff preferred using Samson Siasia in that position than Jayjay just cos of disciplinarian play of Siasia. Pls try and watch Nig -Italy match at US 94 it was the day i will never forget in my life, very painful lost.Jayjay was just playing to the gallery, it reached a point Yekini and Finidi George were shaking their head cos they were expecting a pass but Jayjay just turned around again to dribble the set of players he has dribbled before, watching Jayjay against Denmark at France 98 should tell you Jayjay was a showman then and not a team player, Olishe was shouting we are down but Jayjay was doing his things though at the end that match fetched him a great contract to PSG.

It was in the year 2000 that Jayjay realized that football is a real game not just fun, check his national team records from year 2000 and compared to 1993-2000 you would notice we had different Jayjay in 2000s but his legs couldn't carry him anymore as at 2006.

If Jayjay utilised his potential fully in the 90s,Okocha would have been crown World best cos he has everything as a player but funny enough even Africa best eluded him with such great talent.
Thanks for the beautiful summary on Jay Jay. And not only him, many Nigerian players never fully reached their potential due to one reason or the other. Another major reason we keep under performing at the world cup. Being a team player is key as despite the individual brilliance of messi and ronaldo, they are very great team players hence they continue to rule the world. I hope our players learn fast enough to play for the team rather than themselves.

Bros I enjoyed your arguments. Please tell me on what basis are we inviting Akpeyi, Uzoho, Ezenwa or any other goalkeeper for that matter? Please break down that word 'heroics'. What's in it?
I do argue like you just did and I see merit in what you have just said cos the young guns did it. If we had a solid goalkeeper do you think some will call for Enyeama? Personally I would not. This WC thing is not about youth, about old tired legs or about team spirit about any categories we have set up and argue for or against. Nope.
The question should be be what would enable us post a very credible performance. Team spirit? It should be considered? Old players like Martins? He should be considered. Youthful players? Let them have their chances. We are rallying round as a nation to look at things from all angles.
You asked questions like Enyeama of 2014 is he still the Enyeama of 2017? If not for his injury I would have answered you.
Sincerely go back and re-evaluate things. You might not want Enyeama but what I see is not necessarily a fixation with youth or aversion for the old legs. It's a fixation with the present. Five years from now you guys will oppose the inclusion of many of the players of this present crop who are doing well.
@the bolded and how many goals have our current goalkeepers conceded that truly justify all the hue and cry about Enyeama?

Like I said in my earlier post, we always entertain unnecessary fears about the Eagles, when we were drawn against cameroon and algeria, many wrote the team off due to the quality of players on ground, even in the last world cup, I knew high profile Nigerian journalists who wrote the Eagles off against serbia, why are we always doing this to ourselves? Even in the current world cup draw, Many of us already predicting we will be beaten silly because we don't have a keeper. And when the Eagles excel, we all begin to eat our words. At times we shouldn't over analyse things and just let things be.

I bet you if those players you saying they should have their chances do have it like martins in the past and fail to perform, some will come back to defend their poor performance and blame it on the coach or other players. That is how the cycle has been and when are going to be tired moving in this cycle for Christ's sake?

Actually, Enyeama has enough time to get fit. Goal keepers are special breed. You could see in the Egyptian national team. Their keeper is Old as innnnnn Old. But the dude is still able to do it. And thats why I cant discard a player based on age. When it comes to what Enyeama can offer, there is no doubt. If he is match fit, he is practically better than all those we have.

That is not to discredit what you have said. But bear in mind that a goalkeeper is just one of the elements in a team.

Lemme pose this trivia to us all. Which would we prefer, strong defence, strong attack, bad goalkeeper OR... good goalkeeper good defence bad attack? OR GOOD goalkeeper, bad defence, bad attack?

I rest my case
My main issue is that if a player has been frozen out of a team for some time due to premature retirement reasons like enyeama or martins due to a coach's preference for other players or other reasons and the team has been playing and even winning matches without them, how come it's when we have qualified for the world cup, we suddenly remember that they are better than the current players. I don't understand that assumption.

Questence:
I understand your concern. I have always read and related with your thoughts.

But on this one you need to realize two things.

1. No team will go as far as winning a cup without a good goalie. You would need to re-watch an highlight of the 2010 world cup between Netherland and Spain to understand. Top class goal keeping on display for both sides. Saving blushes.

2. At the moment, Akpeyi and Ezenwa are prone to errors. That is not good for our campaign. It is not always easy to comeback the way we did against Argentina when your goalie makes an unpardonable error. Likewise it is demoralizing and hurtful for both fans and players when the team has worked really hard to maintain a lead up till the dying minutes only for your error prone goal keeper to give in a cheap goal and squander the efforts. That's tragic.

Uzoho is basically untested. I believe he is on his way to be our next super goalie but at this moment, not until we have tested him in many friendlies we cannot confidently rely on him to lead the lines at the world cup.

So basically we have no confidence in any of our 3 goalies for now, so if Enyeama is fit and doing well do you not think Rohr should invite him?

For other positions we do not need any Old member for chemistry sake, but for the goal keeping department.............

We would be an unserious team if we do not take our goal keeping department serious.

Questence.
is enyeama not prone to errors too? It's relative man, Enyeama's error cost us the game against France in the last world cup. He too is prone to error.

Enyeama is our all time best.

The goalkeeping position is not one to be toiled with.

It is not like an out field position where you have more room for experiments.

This is the Senior World Cup where the best all over the world play against each other.

A world cup goalkeeper especially if he is first choice must be one that has been tested and proven.

A 45mins friendly game may be enough to have a conclusion on an out field player but not a Goal keeper. Even Ezenwa with all his heroics against Cameroon, Zambia and Algeria can be said not to be tested enough even though the only goals he conceded in all 4 games were penalties. His down side was that he showed lack of composure and positional abilities. You now place more confidence on a rookie that played only 45mins of which the Argentines only had 1 shot at goal.

I have said it and I will still say it that, in the absence of Enyeama, I would rather make Ezenwa first choice rather than Uzoho.
The issue with some of you is that you are trying to justify enyeama's recall on his past heroics [same with martins] This is the same error we did in 1998 as rufai was called due to his past heroics too [even Rashidi yekini]. Are you sure that Enyeama today is still the same Enyeama of 2014. That he has resumed action does not mean he is still as sharp as before.

I think we are exercising unnecessary fear going to the world cup as we always assume that we need to go with our very old legs before we can make impact. During the wcq series, we were so fearful about ezenwa, but did that stop us from qualifying against experienced teams like Cameroon and algeria? I remember when we played serbia in 2014 and keshi introduced a young babatunde, it was like what the hell? but the guy turned out to be a revelation for us in that match and with a superb assist to musa for his first goal against argentina before he was injured.

We are just entertaining fears anytime we qualify for the world cup and we suddenly remember players we were not thinking about before. I think going forward, it's better we don't participate in the world cup anymore cos what's the use of qualifying if you can't trust the current players you have especially the ones who did all the hard work of qualifying. What if all these old legs we want go to the world cup, mess up like it happened before, are we not going to blame the coach for being stupid to take along tired legs? We are behaving as if we had no keeper in our previous matches. Are we the only team suffering weakness in some departments going to the world cup? You can't have a 100% team and no team in the world does. Brazil has had reputations of not having the best of goalkeepers yet they have won the world cup 5 times. Please let's major more on our strengths and be cautious in our areas of weakness. Recalling players who have retired or close to retirement will not solve these weak areas or can Enyeama guaranteed a clean sheet against the argentines? Abeg o. Recalling players based on past heroics is a very big NO for me. In 2014, Enyema was breaking records of clean sheets in France but is it the same Enyeama of today? Sorry for my long post
