Its all political manipulations to manipulate the sw and north central ahead of 2019 which is their biggest headache to unseat APC, how far they will succeed, its left to be seen.

Politics › Re: Why Lagos Is Immune To Recession — Rotimi Agunsoye by Goke7: 9:11am On Sep 20, 2016
some comments here are funny, what the fellow is saying is that the Lagos state Government as an entity is not feeling the impact of the recession because it can still carry out its obligations such as salaries and projects due to its huge revenue base which is the product of a long term plan from the days of tinubu thru fashola and now ambode.

It took time for Lagos state to get here so they have enough shocks to counter the impacts of recession. I urge everyone on this forum to be objective and not turn this to a petty tribal thing. If other states have been doing what Lagos has been doing over the years, they will even be better than Lagos.

Don't mind them. They think progress minds can easily be railroaded into group thinking and madness. Progressive minded people look critically at the situations. There is nothing new in Nigeria, some even think we have been in a continuous downward economic developments despite huge earnings at sometime. i.e. we had been in depression in the past decade. To expect that even the more organised planned Arab economies are in recession and our own tattered economy running on criminality would be buoyant is the height of stupidity.
no be lie you talk o. our people are just too emotional, that's all.

And who told you Buhari succumbed to anybody ..he held on till he realised he didn't have enough foreign reserve to keep giving the naira a false value ..As usual Mr presidents stubbornness and lack of vision made home tale his finger of the trigger when the damage was already done and the the naira she real value was playing out in the streets and not the banking halls.. Further more he keeps ordering the CBN to release cheap dollars to different religious groups at a time we don't need it
You've not said anything here, some of you folks are just too emotional not to come to terms that the present economic situation was unavoidable no matter any policy used. its not just oil prices, many of Nigeria's oil buyers now have so many options as to where to buy oil from and there was no way Govt earnings will not dip. Did we have any other solid industry to back up or fall back to when our earnings from oil declined especially with the amount of imported petroleum products?

You guys talk as if PMB will just begin to manufacture revenue from the skies to boost the economy and what happens to the issue of timing for things or revenue to gradually build up for govt to spend. All you are saying here is PMB's stubbornness and lack of vision. Do you understand what vision is all about. If someone has vison, does it come to reality over a short period of time? You talk about religion, both christians and Muslims got cheap dollars for their pilgrimage which has been the norm with past regimes and you expect PMB to stoke religious crisis being different with the way we carry religion on heads in this country? is that PMB's fault?

Guy I know how things are very hard but honestly we are unnecessarily too hard on PMB as per the economy may be because PMB can be very hard in his words to people and stern in his actions and we just feel we should give it back to him but seriously its still too early to judge him out-rightly.

Even USA ,with all the best economists in the world, could not avert economic downturn. It took Obama more than 4 years to turn the economy of USA around.

Textbook economist like Utomi should please shut up an let us have our peace. What contributions did he make to avert the recession?Talk is very cheap indeed. What leadership did Utomi provide to save Volkswagen and BankPHB from extinctionhuh

The fact about economics is that there is never any best way. There is always a lacuna in very economic policy adopted, and that is what idiots like Utomi are capitalising on to attract very cheap publicity.

Borrowing against assets?Earlier devaluation in a very import dependent economy? How easy and certain are these, as perfect solutions to averting recession?

The same sort of economists would have told us that the devaluation of the Naira was too hasty a decision,if otherwise.

Rubbish!
Exactly bruv, which ever way, they would have still found something to blame PMB. Like some of them shouted for subsidy to be removed only to blame him again for the price of fuel, I am tired with Nigerians as they never seem to amaze me.

He is absolutely right. It is this bad because the infection was allowed to linger leading to economic sepsis. The moment your earnings begin to fall you permit your currency to match the falls naturally so you can maintian productivity. Every dummy knows this. Every dummy does this in his own personal micro economy. When your salary is cut you've got to cut your ability to buy stuff in favour of protecting your productivity. What Buhari did instead was to cut productivity in favour of purchases/assets, etc and ruined the field for those who had the funds to produce. Needless to say they have taken their money elsewhere. The tragedy is that some still think this was a mistake and we were better off banning every commodity and service from the importation list and thus virtually ending international trade and letting inky government control the foreign reserves for God knows what, which will have crashed to unprecedented low levels anyway.
Its all assumptions bruv, you are only saying this using timing as an excuse which is not solid enough, we were bound to have inflation no matter what time we devalue the naira. For PMB who was just coming to power, he knew the effect it will be on his govt politically which is what he is suffering right now.

In economics timing very important, if the government had devalued earlier, thing won't be this bad.

But they shamefully devalued using the term floating of the naira, when they realize they couldn't handle things anymore.
stop the lies, do you know how long we have been devaluing our currency over the years? Let's stop being clever by half. Devaluation was never the best option

we are just a bunch of emotional rants in Nigeria, when the likes of utomi and other night school economists were pushing for the floating and devaluation of the naira, PMB stucked to his guns knowing the effects it will have on the economy, they blackmailed him including the foreign media saying he was too rigid and that foreign investors were running away. Alas PMB succumbed and things went awry and all the so called foreign investors these olodo economists said will come to nigeria if we float the naira till today we never see them. They are now blaming PMB again.

This is how the fuel marketers too are already trying to blackmail PMB to allow them increase fuel price with the stupid excuse of forex even when the demand for fuel has gone down. Honestly the witches in this country are just too much, they all need to be witch-hunted.

politics takes more than being a PhD holder.
most of the folks in pdp are all opportunists, it takes the likes of PMB, tinubu and obj to be in a party for that party to be together. You need a leader who will be rallying point for all. Obj was the soul of pdp and the reason it was in power for 16 years. The day he tore his membership card marked the end of pdp.

When I listened to Femi Adesina on radio, all I here is vague promises and long list of reasons why things aren't working, but when I listened Steve Ayorinde, the Lagos state speaker, I was filled with hope and had a lot of expectation, they even have a plan for Lagos to generate constant power, if fg gives go ahead.if the capacity in Lagos can be transferred to the fg, we'll be out of recession in no time. But I guess the fg is another kettle of fish, too many complexities, tribalism, religion, too many leaders, too many vested interests, incompetencies - Lagos is not perfect, but it's moving forward, wish fg could follow suite.
Lagos is surely an example of what the FG should be doing, its high time, the think-tank of the Lagos state govt begins to work for the FG on part time basis. Folks handling the 5th or 6th largest African economy must be doing something right and the evidence which is there for all to see cannot be faulted.

All over Lagos, construction work is going on, either roads are being built or resurfaced, or drainage are being constructed, or street lights erected. They are not giving any excuse that they are waiting for the rains to stop before they can start road construction. An excuse that has found a home in the eastern part of the country. The governors are perpetually waiting for the rains to stop......
Infact flying into Lagos at nights now present a pleasant picture of a city that is quite illuminated such that you can see the streets from up there. It was not like this before. Almost every major road in Lagos is now illuminated with street lamps such that you can conveniently drive from Lekki to Ikeja without your car headlamps.
Moreso, the Lagos Light Rail project is still ongoing, the erection of the heavy piers for the bridge has got to CMS, and the Chinese firm CCECC is actively on site. Looking at the snaking bridge from Iganmu down to Ijora-Olopa has added to the beauty of the Lagos skyline. Iconic scenery......
Does this mean that there is no corruption, nepotism and all the other negative isms? No. Inspite of those, they are working.
They are planning for two deep seaports in Badagry and Epe axis. An international airport in Lekki Free trade zone. If Lagos is a country, it would be Africa's sixth largest economy, bigger than Ghana and Kenya. If Lagos was a country, it won't be in a recession.
According to a McKinsey Report released yesterday, massive urbanisation will lead Africa's next phase of economic growth. Innovative leaders are already planning with this in mind. Africa is poor, and poverty is an opportunity because it provides a huge headroom for growth.
No other state in Nigeria, not even the federal government is concerned about urban renewal as Lagos State. Two years ago, the State won an award for increasing its green vegetation cover by over 65%. Those who were busy asking Fashola " na flowers and trees we go chop"? do not know the health implications of growing more green canopy across the State.
What am I saying....
Lagos is already working towards weaning the State from dependence on federation allocation and oil money. Infact, a policy is already in place to reduce dependence on oil revenue from the federal government to 20% by 2018, and 10% by 2020.Lagos can afford to run without any shishi from Abuja.
How many states are thinking in this direction?
True continuity....
I support true continuity where there is unity of purpose. Starting from Tinubu in 1999 who in 2003 launched what we have today as Lagos Development Master-plan, which Fashola followed and expanded on, and now Ambode is religiously implementing. Continuity is not just having one political party in power for 16 years. Continuity is having people who buy into an idea follow it through without deviating, or trying to bring in their own.
The People's Democratic Party(PDP) was in power at the federal level from 1999 to 2015. Yet we cant call that continuity. Obasanjo came up with the NEEDS document, a development gospel that if well implemented could take Nigeria to el dorado. But what did Yar Adua do, he set the NEEDS aside, and came up with his own 7-Points Agenda. He even stopped works on the power rehabilitation, railways etc etc. When Jonathan came, he launched his own template called Transformation Agenda which re-incorporated the power road-map, and also rail infrastructure.
In essence, the same political party can be in power for 20 years, yet the full impact will be lackadaisical at most. If you doubt me, check some states that have had same political party holding sway since 1999.
Lagos is working, even in a recession.
The federal government has a lot to learn from Lagos State.
Well said. This is where some of us are pained with PMB and FG, the guys working wonders in Lagos are in your party, yet you choose to ignore them and behave as if they do not exist all in the name of taming one man. Lagos is no where near recession with the amount of projects ongoing, I wonder at times, if its the same naira or currency the folks in abuja and Lagos are using. Something is wrong somewhere in Abuja and its an irony that the folks in Abuja and Lagos belong to the same political party

Like I said in the other thread and now confimed by S&P rating.....Nigerian's Economy is in the worst possible situation....By the first quarter of 2017, the economy would been in rebounds...
truth is we were never in negative growth, the Fg was too quick in declaring recession, all the hue and cry were more political especially in the wake of the opposition loosing power in 2015. True, jobs were lost and govt revenue declined especially with the dwindling oil prices but it has made lot of Nigerians begin to quickly think of alternatives especially the stoppage of unnecessary importation of raw materials that can be sourced locally. We re likely to see increase in local manufacturing capacity and processing of agricultural products very soon and naturally our economy will rebound. We are also likely to see increase in true foreign investments who will set up industries and factories that will see increase in jobs. The foreign guys are seeing the possibilities which we are not seeing, not those chop and run foreign investors in stocks.

Increase in Electric power is what we need urgently and we will be fine.

This is actually the bane of our economic crisis which started from the emergence of saraki as sp. But the funny thing is that when it comes to winning elections, they have a way of going back to jagaban for a way out. I saw the pics of the visit of the vp to tinubu's house last week with the edo apc candidate obaseki taken along and I had a good laugh.

They only want tinubu for them to win elections and they want it to end there, now who is more greedy? they or tinubu. if they really want to cut tinubu to size, then they need to set up same political machinery just like tinubu's own to match him strength to strength. Are they generous like tinubu? can they afford set up industries and organisations like tinubu who feeds thousand if not millions via direct and indirect employment.

They are all learners and seriously, Fashola should know better which is very disappointing.
