I just laughed, those planning to increase fuel price are just wasting their time, smart guys in lagos no de carry car go work again, na BRT and lag bus dem dey use now, cars are only for weekend paroles.

How come with all the recession, Lagos state is still implementing projects all over the place. PMB is not getting his politics right and these PDP goons are already taking advantage. Honestly I don't blame Bruce, I blame the APC who can't keep their house together all because jagaban must be tamed. Already there is panic in edo state as APC is likely to loose hence the plan to postpone the guber elections. Its high time PMB get his politics right but seriously we were making progress under Jonathan? chai its better to allow dasuki run the country then |

MightySparrow: I read such posts like yours often and see lack of understanding of history. The developed world took their source from the church. The church people today read more than the secular or academic. In school we read for certification but one drives a nation is what people read after school. And, this is lacking among African leaders. So, I don't mind the church building edifices and all that.
The impacts will soon follow. Think about Newton, Faraday, Galileo, Lord Rutherford..... Da Vinci, Angelo..... The exotic church design of catholic cathedrals are all works of minds who wanted to give their Gods the best. These later translated to industrial revolution in Europe
The Beautiful Arabian architecture and great mosques are a testimonial to this fact. The great Arabian astronomers and mathematicians were mostly religious people. Churches and mosques should continue to spread and be creative and represent God well. beautiful explanation, God bless you |

Reference: Free yourself from the captivity of 'company'. What is a company. Is it not a collection of people with vision, drive and competencies. Seperate them and you will find out there are several Nigerians with expertise in rail construction. Get them to moon light or sabatical for the 'Kano Metroline Project'. Lease equipment on favourable terms and source all but the absolutely impossible materials from local manufacturers. There are a number of foundries in Nigeria that will look at that 1.8 billion dollar cake and absolutely drool at it. They will retool away from rebar to make rail lines in a heart beat. Has the government made this inquiry yet. Let's be honest. We are not serious in this country. With all the rail projects completed, underway and proposed through the length and breadth of Nigeria, government has not realized they can insist that these Chinese folks build steel factories and foundries in Nigeria? Or give them Ajaokuta free of charge. you are not convincing and you are already sounding bias, I now understand where you are coming from. We deceive ourselves too much in Nigeria, we boast of how good our local engineers are but their shoddy work of very low quality are there for all to see. We are not there yet at all. |

Reference: The rule of development is that whatever you cannot make for yourself in times of hardship you shouldn't have. We have said it many times that we should diversify to develop. Why then the same old import driven dependency. Rail infrastructure is critical but there are other infrastructure we can build for ourselves in the now that can equally boost and diversify our economy. If agric is our primary way out then I suggest we throw our all into it for now. Get it going and then move on. An urban rail line reduces costs, it does not produce jack. am sorry, you are not convincing at all, you say rail infrastructure is critical but because of recession we should not touch it and then you now say an urban rail line reduces cost. In your trying to over analyze which I pointed out earlier, you are already contradicting yourself. I think your problem is the Chinese angle which is the forex issue but you are over looking the spiral effect into the economy, you already said it will reduce cost and not produce jack, what you forget is that transportation costs are factored into production and if cost of transportation reduces there will be tendencies to produce more, hence increase in productivity. You are looking at the short term which is typical of us as Nigerians but you forget preventing future economic crisis such as this is very key here. |

Reference: No one is saying they should not do anything. Of course you must invest to bring yourself out of a recession but do it in the most productive way possible. Did Buhari cancel the metro in favour of something else more productive, employment generating, no. He did so for political reasons because of the perceived independence of the states which is the fore runner to the problems we have today in Nigeria. This is a different matter. Pure economics. The question is whether 1.8 billion dollars is best served by that project at this snapshot of a time. And for your information it is better to debate and over analyse things than to gamble. Sit down with the people and interact with them. Government is a partnership not a one way gungho trip. and where has all our debates and stakeholders' meeting over the years led us to? Guy if na debate dem de do for obodo oyinbo, we go de queue for their embassies? According to Raji Rasaki, action [asion governor in yoruba parlance] is what we need. I hope I am wrong and this rail project serves as a Up kick in Kano's economic drive. This is the excuse PMB gave when he cancelled the Lagos rail project when he was military head of state back in the 80s. So many are yet to forgive him on that. A project that can be fundamentally important still has a question of timing because we face a situation of either or and you will have to view this in the national context or national interest since Kano state does not generate forex independently. The Federal government throguh the CBN may consider it unviable at this point in time. But what Government should be doing is not just to focus on cost saving signature projects like these only but give equal if not more emphasis on production, mass employment, export oriented projects at this point in time. Afterall 1.8 billion dollars is a heck of a lot of money in naira terms these days. The value a rail project brings is un-quantifiable, your argument does not hold water. I suppose the question is whether they are viable in the said states, which is something that needs to be debate. Will you justify such rail project if Ekiti states was to build one? because this project isn't anymore viable in Kano than it is in Ekiti or other states. There is simply little or no argument for it, at least so far. you are definitely biased especially from your Ekiti angle, its laughable you know . Kano state alone contributes so much food that would warrant such massive mega federal spending and yet Nigeria spent billions of dollars in food imports yearly? What then does the other northern states contributes? Billions of dollars generated from oil, some of which was explored from two south eastern states and customs levied from south eastern importers and exporters. so we produce no food in Nigeria abi? do you know how many we are in this country? if you say our local production cannot meet our local demand, yes I agree. So my comment is out of love I have for the state. Am not saying the rail system is a bad idea, what am saying it's a misplaced priority. FYI the rail is only gonna move within Kano metropolis, so it's not gonna affect movement of products as some of you claim. With the newly built flyovers in the city, there's almost nowhere you can spend up to 10minutes in a traffic hold up, and the transport fare is also cheap. I can get from Yan Kaba to BUK New site with just N200 and within a short time. Compare that with last year's tomato glut when a full basket you can't lift sold for as low as N400, imagine if provision for processing was established how much the economy of the farmers and the state would have improved. It's like the proverbial your house is on fire and you are chasing rats. must Kano be congested before they can have light rail? haba is rail the only thing the state govt will do? |

You said northern governors are leveraging on buhari to get unequal federal govt spending to their region, and I agree that a precedence has being set. A future SE/SS president would see such precedence honoured with probably greater ferocity which would be deserved anyway. So what is all this talk of OBJ and shitt? Can OBJ stop the SE/SS from ever becoming president? You see, that is where you guys always shoot over the bar, disparaging others to project your point and that's how you started with the topic of this thread. CSTR2: Take advantage of a president to improve infrastructure at the expense of others in an economy under recession?. Now that is an interesting angle you brought up. Atleast a precedent has been set. If a SE or SS president emerges tomorrow, he is expected to leverage on his position to overspend on his domain beyond the realms of common sense and equality. He is not expected to check the most ample position for increased national productivity and invest therein devoid of ethnic sentiments. Jonathan must be a stark moronn then for not diverting half Nigerias's budget to the Niger-delta for the total transformation of that place instead of building almajiri schools and solving northern age-long issues meant for their governors. You think Jonathan meant well for the north? He only did what he did for the north cos of his intention for re-election, reason the northerners were not fooled. You think if Jonathan had won second term, he will care for the north? Jonathan was never nationalistic, if you think so, ask the sw governors. Abegi, carry your sentiments go one side, the northern governors are the ones trying to up their game and leveraging on PMB's power which the SS governors fail to do. Its not Jonathan's fault but the SS governors palaver. ok? |
