TravelRe: U.S Visit: Port Of Entry Interview/stories. by groovychik(f): 9:56am On Aug 13, 2019
That was intense. Enjoy your trip
Adaku1988:
Hey my beloved people,
I finally made it to the US, and I would like to share my experience at the POE in JFK, now that I have a computer as typing with my phone I lost my message three times.

Well I was totally unprepared, first time visiting the US. I flew from Lagos via Istanbul to JFK and landed midday'ish, travelling solo.
After a long queue, I get to the CBP officer to whom I hand my passport.

CBP Officer: Purpose of your visit?
Me: Tourism.
CBP Officer: Tooooouriiiiiism. (He says that prolonging the name as if I have made a mistake in my pronunciation). He finger prints me and stamps a date on the passport (six months).

By this time the little light indicators on his station had turned from green to red, and another officer standing nearby came and picked my passport and I was ushered in secondary.

Inside I saw many people especially asians and I was asked to take a seat. Across the room was a counter with CBP officers grilling at travellers. One guy was been asked to state the exact time he had spend in his previous visit to which he wasn't sure whether it was 2 years or 18 months.

Another lady was denied entry but permitted to make a phone call whilst an asian guy seated close to me had his phone taken and placed inside a folder together with his passport because he was using it. I quickly switched off my phone. (discreetly as I usually receive numerous calls)

Later on a lady without CBP uniform but with a badge around her neck came and picked my passport and disappeared inside. I thought they were running a background check as it took close to 30 min when she came back and asked me to follow her. We went inside a room and she asked me to take a seat.

Officer: What are your names and date of birth?
Me: I stated my names and place of birth.
Officer: Where are you going to stay?
Me: I gave her my hotel name and address. I didn't remember it so she allowed me to use my phone which luckily I had to connect to the CBP WiFi as I couldn't use my Nigerian sim card.
Officer: Are any of your relatives in the United States?
Me: No
Officer: Can I get the names of your brothers and sisters and their phone numbers?
Me: I gave her the numbers and full names. All this time she scribbled on an A4 white paper all over the place randomly.
Officer: Do you use FB or any other social media?
Me: Yes, FB.
Officer: What about Whatsapp?
Me: Yes.
Officer: What is the name of your FB account?
Me: Bla bla bla.
Me: Officer, Am I been detained?
Officer: It's a normal procedure for the customs and border protection.
Officer: Do you only have one phone number with only one whatsapp application?
Me. Yes
Officer: Have you ever been to North Africa?
Me: No.
Officer: What about Libya?
Me: No! (I was wondering is Libya not part of North Africa. )
Officer: So you have never been to Libya?
Me: No
Officer: What other countries have you been to?
Me: Ghana, Cameroon, Togo and Spain.
Officer: Your current passport has a stamp that you've had a previous passport. Have you travelled with that passport?
Me: Yes
Officer: Do you have it with you?
Me: No.
Officer: Can I get the address of your home back in Nigeria.
Me: Gave her the address.
Officer: What are your parents occupation?
Me: Bla bla bla
Officer: Can I see your return ticket?
Me: Gives her my return ticket.
Officer: Where will you visit have you made any plans?
Me: Told her the Statue of Liberty, Rockerfeller Center, FinancialDistrict, Ellies Island, etc etc
Officer: How much money do you have with you?
Me: 2000 dollars
Officer: What made you visit NY and not other parts of US?
Me: It's famous and I have seen it in many movies, etc etc
Officer: You said you visited Spain right?
Me: Yes
Officer: How long did you stay in Spain?
Me: 2 months.
Officer: While in Spain did you see immigrants who were trafficked there illegally and what were their stories?
Me: I saw many people including foreigners and I wouldn't know if they were trafficked, living there illegally or legally.
Officer: Stamps my passport and says 'Welcome to the United States'.
Me: Thank you and have a nice day.

The kind of grilling I underwent was so intensive and next time I will surely travel with my expired passport as well if this is what people undergo in secondary inspection.

Firstly, when I asked her is I was been detained she dodged the question, only to hear from some friends that that is been detained. She even asked about my facebook and whatapp and I did not even hand her my phone. Why would they ask for whatsapp if they cannot access my phone?

Does it mean that the info I supplied will be kept in my record and they can track my facebook activity? Not that I post anything wrong there but it feels uncomfortable to know you are been tracked.

The lady who interrogated me never had CBP uniform but wore casual clothes with a badge worn over her neck. Was this some CIA or FBI officer? Why not dress in CBP uniform?

Another thing I would like to know is, in my future visa applications should I say YES to the question that they ask if I have ever been detained in any port of entry?

Fast forward to today, when I spoke with my relatives, nobody received a phone call from CBP. Why then take their phone numbers?

Thanks a lot and God bless.

@Justwise pls come to our aid and sanitise this thread from scam artists looking for who to dupe in the name of getting dates and bitter people who claim to have gone to Disney land in their wildest dream.

fkj950ax:
Where are the mods?
The last couple of posts are misplaced and ought to be deleted.
They are making the thread so horrid to read.

God bless you my sister @groovychik. I didn’t even see it. Not to think of how many times I have scrolled through searching for a reply.
Pls I want to ask if I can use the receipt for an F2visa later in the year or it has to be B1/B2 visa?

I am sure I responded to you. Check your mentions

Hi nairalanders I recently got an interview date for a conference coming up later in the year although I have not finished filling my ds-160. However for some reasons I don’t intend to travel for the conference anymore. What should I do?should I just abscond at the interview or what?
TravelRe: USA Visit Visa Part 4 by groovychik(f): 7:03pm On Aug 02, 2019
Call the embassy and tell them you have changed your travel plans. Ask them to cancel the appointment and open up the receipt so you can use it another time. Once that is done, you have a year from paying for the Visa to use it. If you decide not to use it within the one year, no one questions it. You can Google the embassy number and also send an email. That is better than "absconding".

Megagens:
Pls I need a reply to this
TravelRe: USA Visit Visa Part 4 by groovychik(f): 9:33am On Jul 25, 2019
From experience and things I have seen from others, they hardly ask for bank statements. However, a friend going for B1/B2 was asked for hers. Since your brother is sponsoring your parents, it might be prudent to have his bank statement in the event they ask. His invitation letter can also state he is the one sponsoring the trip and the only reason I am suggesting this is in the rare event they ask for bank statement and all these will not guarantee a Visa. They need to show they have ties in Nigeria. Good luck to them.

Lovecaleb:
Please everyone, I need your help here, my elder brother has been in the US for 10years now. And I just spoke to him about sending for mom and dad.

Please my question is what are the things we will need from him apart from sending and invitation letter? And what do we also need to do from here.

Please I will need contribution of ideas thanks

It hurt me too, Shawarma is such a breathe of fresh air, always willing to help, always encouraging people and lighting up this place. I hope she doesn't stop contributing because of all this. To see these people with mob mentality saying all sorts got to me. That said, pls don't leave the forum and also drop this. It shall be well with everyone.

You should know I will delete this account if need be. The thread will continue, but when you let people have their way in attacking the nature of an innocent soul like this, is that necessary? It hurts me to the bone to see those posts up.

Being looked at by who? Do you know her name or have you ever seen her picture? You lot have short memory and if comments on a faceless forum gives you sexual thoughts, then you need help that this forum cannot provide. See how you lot are ganging up and trying to bully and shame a female that has offered more help than most. Such a shame, pathetic.
Bitcoinbuyer:
Truth is to some guys,She’s been looked at as a sexual object on this same thread,it derailed the thread sometimes back,Lagosismyhome words were more like an advise to prevent this happening over again,no insults whatever here/intended,I don’t see any issue here,You mentioned that "you respect her to be slow to jump to conclusions however today was an exception"..you can as much ignore that because it wasn’t necessary if "this person has never done this before..Again That’s Respect!!
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 15 by groovychik(f): 10:54pm On Jul 18, 2019
You are very wise. Respect. The people that will lose from stoking the flames are those applying for F1. If any of these ladies stop commenting, their absence will be felt. No one has the right to cast aspersions on another's character on a faceless forum. The wise ones would die this matter here and now without further escalation, while the sour grapes would use this to pour out their envy and frustrations. It is well with all of us.

Porpor:
I am not here to take sides or hold brief for anybody. I am going to say it as it is.

Lagosismyhome has always been a grand matron on this thread, I salute her for her invaluable contributions and for staying around for such a long time. Some oldies like megrin have often come back to the thread to sing her praises for remaining true and committed. Madam, may you live long and prosper!

If there is one thing I know about you it is your high level of intelligence and being slow to jump to conclusions. Today, however, was an exception. Except you know Sharwarma beyond this thread, it was hasty generalisation to infer that she had poor carriage and "demarket" the female group. I have lived with flirtatious ladies during my college days, these ones are the most unpredictable, and yet disciplined. As a guy, you think you're the chosen one... story for the gods! They have no such interest for you going on in their mind. I later got used to that kind of life and of course understood better. I want to believe that Sharwarma is trying to be a friend to all and may not necessarily be loose. Adjudicating her to be loose or otherwise would make no sense, EXCEPT you know her beyond here. You could simply come out to clarify that you don't mean it the way it has been misconstrued and that could save a lot of heated back and forth arguments here.

While the former has earned her place and respect here overtime, the latter, Sharwarma, has equally made tremendous contributions here within her short spell. Reading her post has always been a delight and she has proven to be intelligent and resourceful too. The mould of comments that has followed is suggestive of a people who are simply hating and hurty. Some have unashamedly called her out in the past for writing long epistles (I mean, what happens when you gloss over her comments and choose not to read them). I don't wanna mention monikers, but for goodness, somebody feels mislabeled and has respectfully spoken out, the least I expected is to see people call her out for toeing an honourable path. Let's be careful not to create a divide or chasm here. These two have made invaluable contributions here; we want them to continue their good job. Some of us simply come here to read comments and get more lights. It is the newbies who lose when others try to stoke the embers of hostility here where there is non.

Peace!
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 15 by groovychik(f): 2:34pm On Jul 18, 2019
Maam it's not that serious. Live and let live

LagosismyHome:
That why females will always be looked at a sexual object... it starts from the way we carry ourselves or allow others to address us or see us ... . All this talk about likes, tripping , nice voice, my king .... There more to life and our value than all that .
TravelRe: USA Visit Visa Part 4 by groovychik(f): 2:14am On Jul 17, 2019
So basically they are encouraging people to marry for visa/passport, considering there is not written rule that every relationship must end in marriage. That said, it is their country and their prerogative who to give or refuse Visas.

TWoods:
This is not unique to Nigerians. I have seen Europeans and Asians denied entry to the US because they intended to come and spend time with boyfriends/girlfriends. That’s a significant tie to the US that makes it difficult to qualify for a non-immigrant visa that is dependent on you showing you have minimal ties that will keep you in the US. The consular officer was being helpful. If you intend to marry the guy then get a K1 visa, it’s much easier and entitles you to stay in the US for 3 months to get married.
TravelRe: USA Visit Visa Part 4 by groovychik(f): 9:46am On Jul 14, 2019
A friend who has serious travel history history including to the US was recently denied. During her interview she was asked her purpose for travelling and one of the things she mentioned in addition to tourist purpose was seeing her boyfriend. VO asked her to ask him to file for a K1 Visa and refused her a B1/B2. Same person she has been dating for two years and has gone to visit on subsequent trips during which she never stayed for over 3 weeks. Maybe they want us to start lying during interviews. My point is, if you are applying, do so as an individual make sure you have your own money and home ties and omit mentioning Fiancee. That's not you lying, that is you keeping info to yourself.

LEGHEND:
Hello house
I need your help on this

Please i will like to hear your advice.... Thanks

Check the CEAC website see the status of your Visa. Also check where you booked your appointment to see if the embassy still has your Visa

Please I want to know if there is any person or persons that has been approved and given the white paper by VO and was NOT able to pick up his passport after 5 working day due to delay by the embassy.
What month was your appointment and How long did it take the Embassy to return your passport back to you.
the reason why I am asking is that I was approved and told to come back after 5 working days for my passport but its 2 weeks now and I have not yet received my passport. I want to know if someone has experience this long wait and at the end got his passport with VISA. Please how long did it take?

Know your travel plans, have an itinerary of what and what you plan to do. Ask yourself if you really can afford to travel. If your intentions are genuine, pray for a patient VO, if there are not, certain behaviour in front of them will give you away and it will be rejected. Good luck.

My wife and I were denied in 2016. We wanted to visit for vacation. We were newly married. No kids. I work. She is a student.

Three years after, we have two kids. I now want to visit a mentor. I still work. My wife is in final year. I will sponsor myself.

I believe I will get the visa.
TravelRe: USA Visit Visa Part 4 by groovychik(f): 1:10am On Jun 24, 2019
They ask for specific documents like bank statements etc, you submit at a Visa application centre, they scrutinise all that etc then return your application back to the same centre. You won't know if its been denied or granted before that. If you have been granted, your passport will bear a Visa stamp, if refused there will be a letter stating the specific reason or reasons for denial.

flourishing247:
Please what's UK's method of verification? Thanks
TravelRe: USA Visit Visa Part 4 by groovychik(f): 10:37am On Jun 23, 2019
Some some ignorant person stating here that visas are given only for economic purpose. Which economic growth will trump someone travelling for two weeks and spending minimum of 4000 dollars. In my case I had no home ties apart from my dogs and Nephew. I own my own company, so no employer to answer to, making me a flight risk, so I could have easily been denied but I wasn't and I have gone and come home. I know some Nigerians are dubious but maybe it's time for them to start the UK method of verification, but what do I know?

TheEnforcer:
Not so much about the change inntravel plans. You see this ties thing weighs on some people more heavily than others. Its seems the CO has doubts he might not not return this time.He doesnt just see much tying him down to Nigeria at the moment. And thats the essence of the interview.
TravelRe: USA Visit Visa Part 4 by groovychik(f): 5:06am On Jun 23, 2019
Your denial pained me. We are all fishing to see see why you were denied and pointing out things that might not be the reason. I personally do not see anything wrong your transcript because loads of people I know have changed travel plans and still get issued visas including this Friday. As for port of entry, CBP would have stopped you if it was an issue. Since you are obviously not desperate to travel, just stay away from there until when you really need to travel.

Today was pink slip galore in Lagos. I also got my share of the pink slip

How disappointing that must have been for you. However, there were a lot of red flags as others have pointed out. Why would your Mum sponsor you for a conference if it is one recommended by the school school while you are earning good money. I wish we could stop treating visa interviews as 'kalo kalo' or 'try your luck'. Please give it a break

Elawnugo:
Good morning, I went for interview on Monday and my visa got denied
Me: Good morning
Vo: No reply
Vo: your passport pls

Me: no
Vo: are you married
Me: yes and am blessed with a son
Vo : Have you traveled out of this country before
Me: no

Please what do you think I did wrong is it because I have not traveled out before or my mum is paying for my trip or because am young... Am 27yrs old.. I don't understand. SHARWAMA'S APPROVED VISA TRANSCRIPT.
Date: June 7, 2019
Venue: Lagos Consulate
Time:6:30 a.m
Gender of VO: Male
Window: I Didn't notice, I was blown away by his cuteness and jerry curl grin grin grin
Ok it was the second to last window, before the exit door.
I: (Smiling) Good morning sir
V.O: Good morning, please pass me your passport and your I-20.
I did and he was like "please push your passport a little bit further". I pushed it and asked, "is it okay now sir?"
VO: Yes it is. Why are you going to the US
I: (deep breath + killer smile) To uhm, pursue a masters degree in Biology, Biomedical Science Concentration at East Tennessee State University, Johnson City Tennessee.
V.O: Why this degree?
I: I really want to work as a research scientist at a renowned biomedical research Institute here in Nigeria. Unfortunately, a masters degree in Biology or a closely related field is the minimum requirement for such a position. So this degree would not just help me hone my research skills or build my critical thinking, it would qualify me for the position I really want, when I return.
V.O: So why did you pick this school?
I: (Gesticulating with magical hands) For me, it wasn't just about the generous funding I received, which I am extremely grateful for by the way, it had a lot more to do with the student-faculty relationship I have built with my potential supervisor, professor Burna boy. We Skyped a couple of times and we have chosen a thesis topic I am super excited about.
V.O: What other schools did you apply to?
I: I applied at Texas A&M University, Commerce
VO: uhum(while typing)
I: Cleveland State University Ohio and Kansas State University Manhattan Kansas.
VO: Have you travelled out of the country before?
I: I have not had the need to sir.
VO: Are you married
I: No sir
V.O: You said you have funding, let me see the evidence
I: My school did not give me an official letter but it's on the I-20(I pointed at the document so he looked at it)
V.O: Ok I see $9590 to be payed by someone ,who is this?
I: That's my mum sir
V.O: What does she do?
I: My mum is a business woman, she sells African fabrics and traditional bridal attires
V.O: Yes do you have any proof, I want to see evidence.
I was confused and he mentioned "or bank statement"
I: (Killer smile)Yes, with all pleasure. Just a moment please.
So I got the bank statement
V.O(while looking at the statement) Doesn't your mum have other children to sponsor in school?
I: (I never expected that question, so my English technically failed me, so I looked at him and answered) All of us have finished school, it remainder two of us.
I was so embarrassed about my grammatical blunder but I was glad he understood the point, we were all done with school except two of my siblings.
V.O: Ok, I will be approving your Visa. He hands me the white paper. Talked about pick up in three working days, gave me back my SOA and I-20, asked me to keep it carefully and I would need the latter at the port of entry... Told me to have a wonderful day
I: (Killer smile) Thank you and have a wonderful rest of the day too.
Yup, I bounced out of the building grin
THE END grin grin grin

Q1. What are my chances of getting an F1 visa with my valid B1/B2.
Q2. In the event that i am refused an F visa, do you think my valid B1/B2 will be cancelled.

P.S. I am going with one dependent (child) who also has a valid B1/B2.

Thank you.

Sorry for the disappointment. Personally I do not think there were any red flags apart from the six weeks stay. Your answers were not perfect but such a tense environment doesn't help issues. You can hold your head high that you were truthful. If I were in your shoes, would probably reapply.

Ebalu953:

@seyewest and others, correct me if am wrong. JFK is a hub for those planning to emigrate illegally to Canada. I have read stories of those sent back from there cos they had no tickets to their proposed destination. So basically am saying if he is to enter through JFK he should have Detroit ticket on him to avoid story.

Celeritas01:
Okay sir.. Thanks alot. Sorry to bother you again
Please. My.final destination is Detroit, but I would stop at JFK first of all..
How do I connect to a local airport around?. Bus, hotel, how can I connect both airports sir?

She won't be allowed in without uploading her pictures. If the interview is anytime from Wednesday next week, you can fill a new form and update the new confirmation number on her profile now. If her interview is on Monday or Tuesday, it's probably too late.

MumTee:
Hello,
My mum's interview is next week and I couldn't upload her passport photo online while submitting the DS 160 form.
She just sent me something on the form which says "effective immediately, visa applicants who don't upload their photos won't be allowed to be interviewed"

How correct is this, what if she goes for the interview with her photographs.
How do we go about this? Anyone who has attended an interview recently in Lagos Nigeria?

Zanipolo:
I spoke to some peeps who helped my mom with the visa and all, they told me there is an option to include a kid when reapplying for a visa I just need to know how true this is.
