Not sure. Normally they drop the infant (not necessarily throwing) in the river and expect it to float. Normally it would -not always of course. If it does its just
basic training from then onwards. Its becoming very outdated and practiced only by a few communities. I believe it has to do with proving the childs 'Ijawness' - sort of.

For your first question its all myth and superstition. They train of course, lol. Its necessary. Although they are used to the water and can go to depths, extremes, where many would get lost, but to say they can stay under water that long sounds superfluous.

Your point is clear though but it does make a difference. Where are salaries be paid from? funds for capital projects? It still affects us one way or another. Don't forget, revenue is still generated mainly from crude oil proceeds.

Like they have intervened in Lagos? I'm just being realistic here though . We all know poor drainage, blocking of canals with debris and lacklustre attitude of the government are the causes of these floodings. note, its just rainfall. Not over flowing rivers or rising sea level.

1. There is no such thing as "south south". Just another Nigerian idiocy.

2. The people of the Niger Delta are more connected historically and culturally with the Igbo than anyone else. For e.g. The Aro migrated from what is Cross Rivers State today. The Ibibio, Anang, Efik, etc have close historic and cultural links with the Abiriba, Bende, etc. In fact, many of those folks are closer to the Ibibio, etc in dialect than they are to say someone from Enugu. Igbo migration and inter-marriage with the Kalabari, Ogoni and Ijaw has been going on for centuries. Someone like Goodluck Jonathan's grandfather came from Arochukwu and settled in Otuoke. Do you know that Jaja of Opobo was Jubo Jubeoha from Amaigbo?

3. For many years the Ijaws were classified by the British as Igbos. The Ijaw identity is a recent phenomenon. It's hard to tell who is an Igbo or who isn't in Rivers State - many speak Igbo, many have Igbo names, many have Igbo customs, many choose not to identify with Igbo for political reasons.

4. Anyone that thinks people within a few miles radius of each other are not culturally and historically linked is ignorant of Nigerian history and history in general.

@The bold, flooding recently occurred in several cities in Nigeria not Lagos alone. What did the government do before and after the flooding to help the affected and probably prevent further occurrences besides sharing funds amongst themselves? That is my point.

While there is warning, you totally missed the point. Nigeria's infrastructure is no where standard to combat basic flooding.You cannot compare the hurricane and tornadoes experienced in those countries with what we experience here.

Mind you this is just flooding. It is not caused by any natural disaster. What do you think will happen if one should occur?

Generator fumes can be odourless, especially from newer petrol or diesel generator sets. Only if there is a complication, then it might smoke. A google search would help much.

This excuse doesn't quite cut it. I'm some who likes learning new cultures everyday. So, anyone i come in contact with, i always tend to ask them where they're from and i can even inquire into which village they're from. Even Ikwerres that you can't tell apart from Igbos, i have met a couple of them outside Rivers state after doing my due dilligence.

If Ijaw population is 10 million then Nigeria's population has to be hovering somewhere around 500 million. Where else do you find Ijaws apart from Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Edo and Awka Ibom. While they are a majority in Bayelsa with a population somewhere around 2 million, they're minorities in other states. In Rivers state, they're not more than 30 percent of the population and im being very generous. In Delta state, the major groups are Urhobo and Anioma (Igbo) and Ijaws can't be more than 500k. In Ondo, they're in the hundreds of thousands. In Edo and Akwa-Ibom they're not even up to 100k. So, where exactly is the 10 million coming from?

I'm just going to address a few points.


First the Ijaws in Bayelsa are more than 2 million. they can't be 2 million in 2006 and still be 2 million in 2017. If you say they are not more than 30% in rivers state i might not argue with that. But what is the population of rivers state as at now? The population of Ijaws in rivers state going by 2006 figures was roughly a million plus; note, roughly. I can't comfortably speak for Edo and Akwa ibom, but you are being biased here.

Like I said, A census would give us credible figures- probably.

There are numerous things to be considered if one is to get accurate population figures. The 2006 census did not include tribe identification. Also note that majority of the population dont reside in the rural areas- Which makes up the bulk of their lands (for obvious reasons) as I cited earlier. Only a census can determine the true figures for us at this time- that is if its credible.

2006 estimates put the figures of predominantly Ijaw LGAs in Rivers state at roughly a million and Delta state around 400 thousand. I'm not considering port Harcourt and Warri here and other cosmopolitan towns. Fast-foward to 2017, You don't expect the population to be stagnant.

I don't know about the Ijaws being the fourth largest ethnic group in Nigeria though, but i can tell you they are more than 10 million. The Ijaws are not like the Igbo or Yoruba which you can easily identity by their speech, language, name or any other means. In reality, only the Ijaws of Bayelsa and Delta refer to themselves as solely Ijaw. Others prefer to identify with their clan, like the Okrikans Ibani's and kalabari. So you might have come across an Ijaw person without realising it.




And their names of course (especially their surnames) are English names in most cases.
