The main issue is that the law did not protect the landlord in Nigeria unlike USA. In USA, within one month the landlord can get you evicted and still collect his money since you will have social security number so the landlord has no reason to take laws into his hands. Here, the tenant is owing 8months , locked the property and the landlord may not be able to get him evicted in the next 8 moths again and he may never recover the rent since the tenant will just disappear. So, if the same thing that happened to this landlord is happening in America, many of them will also become lawless and trust me, they will find legal loopholes to get away with it

The landlord didn't have a good lawyer. The court don't punish you more than what you owe. For example, if you destroy something worth one million, the court will ask you to pay with damages not to forfeit your land to the tenant. The damages won't be arbitrary. The guy must also prove he had 5 million in open space when there was bank. If the destruction was during daytime, they would also prove why they didn't remove the money first. Moreso, if the tenant was actually owing...the law is meant to punish not to destroy. So the judge destroyed the man because he removed fence and you think that is justice. The man had no lawyer. Just forget it. Finally, even if that was the judgement, you think the Ibo man will end well. just keep following him and see the way he will end....it won't end well for him because that is wickedness

Very funny. It is not the landlord that made accusation they broke his apartment. The landlord only said he saw his brother coming to pack things. Funny enough the landlord may even have video evidence because the op said he sent his brother to check so in the process the brother may be packing some things. The op that made the allegation will provide evidence. Nothing concerns the landlord. The landlord was only worried they came to pack the properties without paying him. No case is straightforward. Tenants can do anything. If they are owing you, they can quickly pack their stuffs and run so it is either way. If some people came to park the things and the landlord didn't show face when they were packing it, why would you accuse him of breaking your door. The only thing you rightly said is that no one can predict a case either in police station or court. They never turn case for your head before?

Simply just obtain a police report and proceed to court. Even though you owe him, he should have obtained an eviction order from the court. He has broken the law. If you don't sue him, he will do it again. We are not in a jungle, there's a due process for everything. Being owed is not a reason to act outside the ambit of the law. Also, don't allow anyone harass you. Going by the ACJA 2015, police should not interfere in civil matters such as this. Indebtedness is not a criminal offence. The reason why you are reporting to the police is because a criminal offence has being committed by your landlord i.e obtaining your asset without your notive (a.k.a stealing).

Make sure you pay your rent too. All the best.

You think the landlord is a fool ? He already denied it. He even said it was the brother of the OP that came to pack the things out. Unless you have video evidence or witnesses, the OP have no case. The man even quickly went to report at the police station that the OP wanted to park out without paying his rent.
