It starts dragging from the third gear and that's when it becomes annoying to drive

I’ll keep it simple and short. My car drags mostly in the afternoons whereas it runs smoothly in the mornings and evenings.
Once afternoon comes, smooth ride and proper transmission becomes a big problem. Sometimes when this happens during rides, I quickly put off the engine, start the car again almost immediately and I have noticed it runs normal but for a short while before the usual drag kicks in again.
I have also noticed it causes some mild overheating whereas there’s no trace of water leaks or drops.

Just yesterday, I changed gearbox oil filter and fresh Oando ATF but the issue is still there.


Please share your experience and possible solution. My mechanic is out of idea and I wouldn’t want him to gamble.

Hi, i was in your shoes until i got the Toyota cvt FE oil for N20k (a silver squarish can). I was lucky to do alot of reading online, else my mechanic would have just used AT oil.

My car is about 64k mileage, i just wanted to do a regular drain and refill maintenance, knowing CVTs are fragile. The oil has been in my boot for some weeks now because on one hand i fear mechanics dont know the procedure as they mostly fail to know the difference between a CVT & AT! And on the other i am just told to leave it as its too early to start worrying about changing transmission fluid, if i tamper with it i might just mess it up.

I now have an expensive oil i am scared to use! Pls, i want to know if you had yours done successfully with no regrets. I hear getting them repaired/replaced cost so much!

If i knew before hand that this corolla uses a cvt, i for just add money buy Camry.

Pls my Toyota matrix 06 consumes fuel a little bit more than normal.

I replaced d air intake filter, clean the throttle body with cab cleaner, welds exhaust leaks, already bought original NGK spark plugs but yet to replaced, gas cap not clicking after lock, already ordered a new one but yet to arrive.

I did a scan & d following code popped up: P0420, P0441 & P0128.

Which of these is d real culprit & How do i eliminate them?

That is one deadly code to have, its a catalyst code, not always mean your CAT is bad, might be 02sensors.but doesn’t mean it will be affecting the fuel.... the culprit there should be the 128 cos dem fit don comot your thermostat like that...

If it’s after, our brothers fit don touch your CAT

If it’s before, check upstream and downstream sensors on the CAT and the CAT.

Bought as Nigerian use, the owner bought it Sept 2019 and hit the bottom cover of the gear on the ground on a bad road. The fluid leaked and the gear developed fault. The brain box had a crack. Instead of replacement he used quick gum to stick it and sold it to me when he noticed the gear always pop out of transmission on a high speed after 30mins of take off.

When I noticed it, I gave it to a technician who changed it and put it back to normal. Only that it moves as if gear 2 is missing during acceleration. It served me well throughout December and January. Last week I went to change the break pad only for the mechanic to tell me that the gear fluid is below the normal level. He advised me to change the fluid.
I changed the fluid with TOP1 ATF. He didn't change the filter ooo.
That was all. I have been noticing a kind of humming sound after that but I ignored it. On Friday I noticed that it has started again. It went out of at 60km/h. I have to slow down to be able to get to my destination.

That's all.
I will be taken it to the first person next week.

I think it’s about time you relax and take a chill pill or else you will be spending and spending with no result.

This is not your fault from the beginning, the owner knows about the problem hence the reason they sold it off to you.

Just cut your loses on this gearbox and BUY ANOTHER.

Don’t spend any more money on the gear, BUY ANOTHER GEARBOX. And ATF can not be the recommended oil for that gearbox.

More so I’d advise you look for reputable people here if you are in Lagos and have them help you with buying and installation of the gearbox

Thank you for the advice. The last repair lasted for 2 months. I am so sure it was the person that changed the fluid that caused this.

Maybe you should tell us more about the history of the gear, services and the rest

No coolant o. I use water. The car was overheating in November last year and I had to change the to cylinder gasket when it burnt.

I noticed the slightly elevated engine temperature in all Corolla of these year, that is caused by dishonesty dealer wey don roll back the Odo meter.

But first, the mechanic says the top gasket is damaged already because of multiple episodes of overheating. So I've told him to get all that is required and fix a new top gasket.

Meanwhile, is it true that coolant is not compatible with new radiator? The new radiator, I was told, is the original and aluminium type. But the mechanic said pouring in coolant will spoil it (I usually use total coolant and I do not add ordinary water).

I also bought a new radiator last year, after installation, I was told not to add coolant but ordinary water because it will spoil the radiator, my brother I didn’t listen to them oo, I put coolant mixed with water 50/50. I prefer the radiator to spoil than running ordinary water in the engine because water has a boiling point.

The car is Toyota sienna 2007. It was bought as Tokunbo barely 2 months ago but has not been used for once because of intractable overheating problem.

The car upon travelling a short distance will overheat and shut off. Sometimes it may start again after cooling down. Meanwhile, the temperature guage does not go up (we thought the guage was faulty initially and changed it).

We have virtually exhausted all options - changed top gasket, changed 2 top cylinders, replaced the radiator with a new one, replaced the water pump with a new one, bypass thermostat, replace fuel pump, etc.

The car is located in Enugu.

Please I need help from experts or contact of experienced technician on this problem in Enugu or south-east.

Change your Kazeems

Why not change the 02 sensor itself as that will be cheaper fix. I know he is getting a positive result, but ECM don’t go bad just like that, especially on newer models.

He didn't try to patch, that iron rod was perfectly fine. The nigga stuck those rubbers inside to prevent water passage so after a while the force of the water will make the rubber block the whole pipe when it gets to the place they bleed or is it blend the water. And I will take the car back he will fix it again and return the rubber backward and the whole stuff will be repeated. Been like that for almost 3 months and be kept making good money out of me. The most annoying thing is nigga will be deprive me the usage of my car for a week or so and come back with a bill of at least 30k telling me how bad the car gave him issues and how great a mechanic he his.

Na so 1 go lose one of my shocks center bolt. Something that is tight before asking him to work on the car.

Using google map to locate a place, I broke a traffic rule in a very busy market in Lagos. Before I could say jack, two road safety officers already opened my door and quoting my offenses and fees to avoid getting impounding my vehicle.


First was I didn’t obey the traffic rule. (Google map actually mislead me). Then he asked for my drivers license. I was very honest with them. I told them I don’t have. I narrated how i applied for the license more than 6 months now but it’s stories upon stories.

The both of them were shocked as to why I was honest that I don’t have that I should have lied instead.


After settling with them, they gave me a scope incase of next time. They told me the perfect lie to outsmart any road safety officer when asked of my license

One of them told me he liked me for being honest and not trying to act smart that’s why he told me what lie to use next time.
