Travel / Re: Lagos - Is It Really Safe For Foreigners? by Hunter(m): 3:15am On Nov 02, 2006
Old Shame:

Lagos is not even safe for Nigerians, but then again London is another crime ridden city. You will fit right in.

You must of been to a different London than I did because the level of crime in London is far far far far far far less than Lagos, I'm an 18yr old white teenager and I wouldn't feel safe in Lagos so I'm not sure how safe a young woman is going to feel. Like it or not Lagos is a very intimidating place

princezino:

@Kimba,
There is NUTHIN inherently WRONG with a 23 year old aircraft!
When you conduct an accident investigation, your objective is to unearth/seek out the ROOT CAUSES,  As a trained Safety engineer, most times in my personal experience and in more case studies , these Root causes often end up in the domain of Management System Failures,  Do you know that till date some WWII spitfires (circa 1945)are still legitly permitted to fly??
I'm not advocating prehistoric flying machines but the main point is that the International aviation industry has a lot standards to maintain safety in the skies. It now behoves the local aviation regulatory authorities to MONITOR and ENFORCE these standards. So-called A, B, C etc etc checks are designed to make sure that all the systems in any aircraft are reborn after certain air-miles. Combine these with high standards in airport safety, meteorological info services, (and razor sharp incident investigation agencies) all combine to make safe skies.
I regularly fly offshore and from Lagos to my ops state but i must confess that I feel most safe in naija airspace when I'm on-board the rather old-model dual-propeller engine (yes, its not jet powered!) plane that belongs and is operated by the firm I work for. As an American company I am privy of the rigorous safety systems in place to ensure that American and other lives' that are ferried offshore everyday are not jeopardized. It flies very low, its very noisy, but since my company has been in ops in naija the aviation debt has never recorded a crash!
PLS PLS PLS, only a sincere reform of the Aviation Regulatory Industry will stop this bloodletting trend.

Spot on there princezino, the USAF has alot of aircraft even older than that still in service and there not falling out of the sky. However we should wait to see what caused the crash before making accusations.

yeah come to think of it in Lagos it would probably be less than enjoyable through all the congestion.

No you were simply being a racist, did you or did you not say that it's understandable if it happens to a white person?

I did not say you make money off my people. What I mean is you as an Australian should not scam fellow Australians. I was just giving an example when I said I pay a lot to go to College. If i go to University in Australia, I will pay more than Aussies. You are so jumpy mate. Read my post well.

and I don't? why are you so adement that I scam people?

And yes you'll pay more if you go to a foreign university because it's subsidised for by governments because their citizen's will most likely be sticking around and earning money for the econemy rather than going home at the end of their education.

nosa101:

No offence mate. It's normally a Naija against the rest thing. You never try to make money off your people. The same way I pay a lot more than Yanks when I go to college.

How do I "never try to make money off your people", do you know what I do for a living?
Am I American? Do I personally have anything to do with how much it costs you to go to college?

This is absolutely horrible. No respect. Doing it to a white man is understandable. Doing it to me is not. I got this email on friday:
Me again
I am going to ask for his credit card number sha, I hope he doesn't come to nairaland

Gee that's not the slightest bit racist is it, doing it to a white man is understandable?
Have I somehow oppressed you and deserve to be scammed? Please enlighten me?

As a few of you might know school is drawing to a close in some parts of the world and as part of our celebrations we have a day were everyone dresses up in costume or what not for the day. Rather obviously I thought I'd go as a Nigerian, anyways here is a picture I had taken in my house yesterday morning.

Hope you enjoy it smiley

In every developing country foreigners get payed more, but in Developed countries it's a different story angry

And why is that? Because it's much easier and better for a company to employ a local.

walaty:

hey guys, i must say that i have really enjoyed reading through all your posts and must say you all got something good to say. africaface, you are right. neocolonialism is a big problem in africa and most of the salaries of the expatriates are exaggerated. these people don't get paid as much for the same jobs in their countries. odeku, the oil actually belong to the people and it is the main or even the only source of nigeria's revenue. as such i don't think the in these regions should suffer at all.n buchio7, you are right also. most, if not all our problems in nigeria are caused by the greediness of our leaders.

The reason why the salary of expatriates has to be so exagerated is because the skill sets aren't always available in Nigeria and it is difficult to get people to want to work in Nigeria because of Safety concerns. How would it be in the best interest of a company to have to pay someone from abroad a disproportionate wage, if someone locally could do the same job?

Your right though the oil does belong to the people, hence why organizations have to pay taxes.

Falciparum:

I heard the plane crashed into a mountain and knowing the terrain of Obudu and that position where the plain crashed its hazy and has series of mountains a pretty difficult terrain and here in Calabar on that day we had a terrible weather series of rains so i believ that is to blame for the air mishap.

I have been opportuned to fly several time within this country i know that things arent right but they are okay. Looking at air misharps in Nigeria the only ones that i feel boils down on aviation authorities is that of Sosoliso for the poor approach of the fire service (lives could have been saved people watched th eplain catch fire and burnt everything) and that of belview cause of the age of the plane. Mishaprs are inevitable but most can be prevented we've tried but more can be done

I love this country but i would love to leave also lol

Mishaps maybe inevitable but the rate they occur in Nigeria through avoidable occurances is disgusting. With proper maitenance there are planes that are 30 years old in regular service (DC-10's in the united states for NW) and they haven't been dropping out of the sky because they're old.

I think it works the same way it does here, you need to have a return ticket if your entering on a tourist visa.

Old Shame:

Did the plane crash or Explode? I smell conspiracy here. But the NAF cannot maintain their Jets, then they should expect more crashes. But i would not rule out "Foul Play".

The dornier 228 that crashed was a turboprop not a jet but yes apparantly maintenance is an issue that needs to be critically looked into.

Travel / Language Test For Citizenship by Hunter(m): 5:30am On Sep 16, 2006
There has been a lot of talk this week in our media about future Australia citizen's being required to have to sit a written English and an oral comprehension test before they are granted citizenship.
The reason it has been proposed is because of concerns of familes of people arriving and adding nothing to society because they can't speak any English (costing us money to support)
At the momment it is not uncommon to see a family of people in which only the children speak English and are required to do all the parents shopping etc.

Do you think it's a good or bad idea to have a test to determine if your English is good enough to function in society?
Car Talk / Re: At What Age Should A Child Start Driving? by Hunter(m): 3:51am On Sep 16, 2006
You can start learning to drive here at 16 (must be supervised by a fully liscenced adult)
At 18 you can get your Probationary licence (solo but your not allowed to drive with any alcohol in your system or a high powered car (125kw per ton (170hp per ton))
then after 3 years you are automatically granted a full license and you can have a BAC of 0.05 and drive any car you want.

the car type in the top picture is likely to be replaced by the new commodore which was launched a few months ago so the second hand market will be flooded with them (they put all the original manufacture equipment back in)

They do make an awesome sound going past you at high speed tongue

There doing great things with their country though :-) It's amazing what they have acheived so far.
