PhonesRe: Which Internet Data Subscription Are You Currently On? by ibadanchap: 7:52pm On Feb 14, 2024
Wsx2:
You guys are lucky, this is what we pay for 1gb in canada, roughly N19500 in naira and the speed is as useless as something else only thing is it’s unlimited calls and text. Don’t know why canada is still very backward in technology because their is no competition only 2 companies feeding others.
I've read the comments by people following this post, and to be honest, comparing Nigeria and Canada data plans is like comparing oranges to apples and it's not so fair.

For instance, the 1 GB is data at full speed, and goes down to 250kbps when you exhaust that limit, rather than drop to nothing. Also, unlike in Nigeria where everyone is on Whatsapp, we mainly use the regular voice and sms for communicating here. In fact, many Canadians don't even have Whatsapp on their phone. You call businesses, offices etc using the regular phone number and I even know some old folks who only have a landline, so unlimited voice and data is actually a thing here and very relevant.

In addition, most of us have stable unlimited Internet via cable at home, so you don't need to use your mobile data at home. For example, I have unlimited Internet at 1.5Gbps download and we typical use about 4 TB monthly since we stream all entertainment online and I also host Plex server at home that I share with friends to stream from. Coffee shops, malls and some stores also have free wifi you can use in a pinch.

Whether you think the $19 plan is expensive or not in Canada may also depend where you are in you Canada journey. I remember when I first came to Canada over a decade ago, I literarily convert anything I wanted to buy to Naira in my head and compared it to Naija price, but now I only compare the price to my budget and pocket.

For sure, compared to our southern neighbours (USA) , mobile data is more expensive in Canada, but I think we still have better, stable, reliable and comparably cheaper (when compared by minimum wages in both countries) Internet than Nigeria
PoliticsRe: Nigeria Is 4th Cheapest Country To Live In The World - World Of Statistics by ibadanchap: 4:11pm On Sep 27, 2023
falopey:
The metric for that statistic in my opinion is how far dollar goes in your country. In other words, the cheapest countries to live for those that earn in dollar. The richer countries are not cheap to live because dollar can not do so much over there compared to what it can do in poor countries
Yep! All this statistics is saying is that if you have X amount of money (the currency does not really matter, but it's common to use USD), how far will the X amount of money go in each country and then rank the countries based on where the X amount of money will go furthest. No matter the currency, that X amount of money will need to be converted into each country's currency to make the calculation.

Cheapest is not the same thing as affordability or quality of living, which some people are comparing this to.

For example, I live in the GTA in Ontario. In my neck of woods, 1 liter of petrol is currently $1.6, and based on current rate, I will be right to say petrol is cheaper in Nigeria than where I am in Canada (assuming NRN650/liter and the exchange of 700 naira to 1 CAD).

If I however do affordability calculation for minimum wage in both Ontario ($15.5 per hour, 8 hours per week, 22 days per month = $2,728) and Nigeria (NRN30,000) and buying 50 liters of petrol, then in Ontario, you are spending 3% of monthly minimum income for 50 liters of petrol ( $80) compared to 108% of monthly minimum income (NRN 32500) to buy 50 liters of petrol at 650 naira in Nigeria.

If I use this same example but using the median salary of $27 per hour ($4752 monthly) in Ontario and 339,000 naira in Nigeria (ref https://www.timedoctor.com/blog/average-salary-in-nigeria/) then, you will be spending 1.7% of your salary to buy 50 liters in Ontario, whereas you will spend 9.6% of your salary to buy 50 liters in Nigeria, so one will conclude Canada is more affordable.

and if it makes anyone feel better (It doesn't make me feel better) the same twitter account has countries by quality of life, https://twitter.com/stats_feed/status/1707010925406966187?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet where Nigeria is last sad
EducationRe: World’s Top 1,000 Universities: Nigeria Fails To Make List by ibadanchap: 3:47am On Jul 13, 2016
olaniyi0:
rubbish! most of the univerties are filled with NGs.
Well the ranking is about universities, not the nationalities of the students in the university. (even though you will discover total population of Nigeria students in those schools will be really minor compared with many other countries)

There are so many things wrong with the education system in Nigeria has had been mentioned by different posters.

Looking at the criteria, it would take a lot and a long time of consistent quality before any Nigerian uni will be in that list. And the quality improvement will not be in the education sector alone, but in every other important metrics for measuring a country's success.

An example: A graduate from OAU has an excellent career, ending as CEO of GT Bank. GT Bank is not one of the top companies in the world, so that achievement will not count towards any point for OAU. Same will apply other criteria. A graduate of Unibadan who has many international awards to her name is not likely to want to lecture at a Nigerian university, when brighter prospects exists at some of the other top universities elsewhere in the world.
Car TalkRe: What Is The Purpose Of The Vehicle Insurance Fees Imposed By The Government? by ibadanchap: 3:57pm On Mar 04, 2016
anytexy:
My question is why govt made it compulsory? Is is not suppose to be optional?.
The reason is to protect and cover you for the repairs of your car if someone hits your car and it's not your fault. The other party may not be able to afford the cost of repairs of your car (and vice-versa). Hence most governments make it mandatory for road users to have a minimum 3rd party insurance.

I have been living in Canada for almost 3 years now and 3rd party insurance as a minimum is mandatory. And police will ask you for it if you are stopped. That being said, I am wishing for the simple Naija flat 5k 3rd party. Sometimes we don't appreciate what we have unless you lose it.

A little story: I drive a 2004 Toyota Matrix which I bought for like $5k some 18 months ago. The best quote I got for 3rd party insurance was $540 monthly (in a year, I will actually pay more than the cost of the car), comprehensive was $850 monthly. I had to beg a friend to add me as a 2nd driver on his insurance which now reduced my monthly premium to $330.

Here your premium depends on what car you drive (statistics say some cars have accidents more than others), your age, how long you have been driving, where you live, how many km you drive on average daily, where you park your car (driveway or garage), whether you install snow tires in winter, if you drive your car to work etc. This information will not be verified, so you may go ahead and lie. But if you have an accident during the winter months for example, and you have no snow tire, and you said on your questionnaire you always use snow tires in winter, the insurance company will not pay your claims (Insurance are the same worldwide, they will avoid paying claims as much as possible)

Every year when you renew your insurance agreement, your premium goes down a little. However if you have been involved in a collision during the last year, then your premium goes up the following month. And you are required by law to report to the police if you are in an accident where total cost of repairs is more than $1k, even if you do not claim insurance for the repairs. One of the reasons why insurance is so expensive here is that you almost always have to make a claim, as cost of repairs is high and claims go beyond car repairs. The 3rd party may also claim they are unable to work for a while because of the accident and the insurance has to pay them a monthly stipend.

And just so you can compare, when I was in Naija, N5k was an insignificant amount of my yearly earning, here $330 is a very significant portion of my monthly salary.

I always use a reputable insurance company when I was in Nigeria, and if you want to make it easier to make a claim, you may want to buy your insurance using a reputable insurance broker. But sincerely, reading this thread made me long for simple, flat rate, never changing 3rd party premium.
Christianity EtcRe: Why Smartphones Are No Substitute For Bibles by ibadanchap: 3:42am On Jun 15, 2015
nedu2000:
Reasons why sincere Christians should take the book known as the bible to church not a smartphone

1) Holding a bible shows one to be a Christian in public,it acts as an 'identity card' for every Christian. Ipads, smartphones does no such thing

2)Civilisation/technology has given us world where homosexuality is gradually being accepted, female reverends and gender changes all in contrast to biblical pronouncements. The church shouldn't follow the ways of this present world so closely

3)Christians lose the essence of the bible like the order of biblical books(after genesis is exodus.....3rd John then revelations) as a simple google search provides answer in comparison to scrolling round the bible and get fully acquitted with it

4) Ipads, smartphone substitutes acts as sources of distraction in churches with calls, pings, alerts and 'nairalanding' available at one's beck/call.

5) Ipads, smartphones serve one primary aim to most holders, showoff

6) 'battery low'
1) No sir. The Bible is not an ID card for a christian. Jesus said "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:35. Also again in John 15: 7-8, He says "If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. And of course Gal. 5:22 expands on the fruits (the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.) Note my bold that says "my words remain in you", not in characters and alphabets on the physical pages of the bible or an e-device

2) As many posters pointed out, civilization/technology gave us the bible in printed form. So this point is not a valid reason not to use an electronic bible

3) The devil did quote the scriptures to Jesus. Know the order of the books has no bearing to you being a disciple of Jesus. Joshua 1:8 says "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it." The most important thing for a christian is to be able to meditate on the words of the bible, and thus keep them in our heart so it can guide us at all times. The medium the words are on is really of no importance.

4) Interestingly I see so many carry the book bible who are nevertheless distracted by their phones, friends etc in the church. I always have my ipad in airplane mode in the church

5) I am sure that there are some people who are not showing off their devices just as there are some people who carry the Bible just to show off being a "christian"

6) I always make sure my ipad is charged for Church, and if not I carry a physical bible.

As for those who mention that when the devil come in the night, can you point your phone at the devil, I dont think the bible itself is a gun or weapon, but knowing the words in the scriptures in your heart gives you a powerful weapon. "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony" Rev. 12:11

I advice those who downloaded from the play store to uninstall ASAP. I tried downloading earlier today, and my android antivirus warned me that the installation contained malware. Of course I promptly aborted the installation. I am thinking that BB shutdown their server to prevent the compromised fake BBM apps from compromising their own servers.

As much as I like android, I always wonder why google can't get a better grip on the play store apps to protect users.

church Agbasa: What America are you talking about?with those words of yours "There are no bridges in America for pedestrian crossing" you need to travel more. There are pedestrian crossings in most Highways in downtowns in America cities. In most cases it is layed between two buildings on both sides of the road while the HWY runs underneath.Bwahahahah.she he even went ahead to say "there is simply the traffic light even on the most busy roads".Girl haven't you heard of freeway?where in your Detroit have you seen traffic lights on a freeway?.Na wa for you.
Freeways don't usually have roundabouts and bus stops either. Most freeways have exits to the right which may lead to an overhead bridge that allows you to safely go left. In fact, from my experience, freeways don't have buildings left, right that has access directly to the freeway, at least in Canada and UK where I frequently travel to.

This is not the case on our so called expressway in Nigeria. Sometimes the roads start as a true freeway, but sooner than later, all sorts spring up along the expressway. I still remember when the Ojoo to Toll gate expressway was first built in Ibadan. I drive from my home in Molete to IITA via the express road daily then during my Industrial Training and it was usually smooth, fast and pleasant. Now you watch out for several vehicles stopping haphazardly, some crossing the express anyhow, and numerous pedestrians crossing. As far as I am concerned, I no longer regard that road as an expressway.

I support scrapping the roundabouts for traffic lights. In Canada, I hardly see pedestrian bridges, but you will usually find traffic lights from where you can cross, especially at places where there is high pedestrian traffic.

Also, in Canada highway code, you are required to watch out for pedestrians, even when you have the right of way. But as many people always say in Nigeria, we really don't value human life.

@op I really like your posting. Very clear and logical. Wish more postings on Nairaland will be this objective.

I use Firefox and Chrome extensively. Chrome is quite fast especially where the site has a lot of JavaScript. I also discover that certain sites open better / faster in one than the other. I have also recently discovered Flock, which is a Chrome clone. Major advantage of Flock to me is that it has a sidebar that I see all the activities of My friends on social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, Flick etc on just one area.

IE? I don't touch it except to see how a site I am developing looks on it. Will however try CometBird ASAP

PoliticsRe: Goodluck Jonathan's Kids Are In School Mine Is At Home! by ibadanchap: 2:43pm On Jan 18, 2011
I think people are missing the point here. It is not the school that the President's children are attending that should flout the order. Some private schools, where parents are paying heavily, are also closed. So why not AIS Abuja?

And for those who says its just 3 weeks, have you considered the injustice to parents who paid for a full term/year and are not getting value for their payments? For instance I have children in boarding house, yet i will feed them 3 weeks extra. Is there anyone compelling the schools to make a refund? Can they even be compelled? So some lost tuition 3 weeks, some lost tuition and boarding 3 weeks and for everyone it's just taxpayers money being wasted for  3 weeks. There is no equality in the closure order at all.

And when has pockets of violence necessitated grounding the whole country educational system? On his facebook page, Jonathan said we should not give in to fear of the bombings yet the Government has given in to fear of violent politicians who are above the law!

Hello all,

I am trying to get information of student visa processing for Canada. Specifically i want to know

1. How much and how long the medical exams cost and takes. Can one start the medicals before applying for visa or one needs to apply for visa first?

2. What is the best way to go about the police report? Directly myself or use an agent? How much does it cost?

3. Is IETLS necessary?

The person seeking Visa already have the admission letter and has paid half of the school fees. The admission is against September 2011.

Responses are highly appreciated.
EducationRe: Extension Of School Holidays - This Is Crazy! by ibadanchap(op): 9:43pm On Jan 07, 2011
For those saying we should understand the government, think about this

1. At what time did INEC/Govt realize that they were going to use public schools for registration venue? Why could they not have planned ahead, for instance starting the reg. Jan 4 - 18 so the schools can resume earlier.

2. Govt says SSS3 may resume. What about JSS3 students. is there exam no longer important? And if JSS3 is asked to resume, that makes a third of school students. If govt guarantees the security of this one third or or one sixth, what does it take to guarantee the security of other students?

3. The govt should have been clear how they intend to recover the lost 3 - 4 weeks, so calendars may be readjusted right now. Fire brigade approach is always stunting our developmental growth.

4. I know areas, even in Ibadan here (newly developed areas) where there are no government school within reasonable distances. In such cases where does INEC intend to use?

5. For those saying food is not an issue, what about kids in boarding house. I have already paid their fees yet they will spend the next 3 weeks consuming un-budgeted resources. Is government also going to compel boarding schools to refund part of the fees? ( We no private schools will give an excuse not to do this)

6. Could there not have been a way to ask the schools to close earlier - may be 12 noon - and extend the registration period by some days to cover the lost hours. With proper brainstorming could a better solution not be found that will not necessitate this wanton destruction of valuable teaching hours?

I believe this government does not think out it's policies thoroughly, (e.g. Eagles withdrawal from competitions, then rescinded) and it is affecting its goodwill (if not goodluck!)

For me, its a pity that theres not much choice in Goodluck, Atiku, Buhari etc. I really fear for this fire brigade country called Nigeria!
EducationExtension Of School Holidays - This Is Crazy! by ibadanchap(op): 10:18pm On Jan 06, 2011
A friend called me this evening and said school holidays have been extended till Feb. 1. Just watched on NTA News the confirmation that Public and Private Schools have been closed till Jan 30th.

I don't see why schools have to be closed for voters registration. Especially since most of the school children are not of voting age (Primary/Secondary)
Where do they expect parents to put the children for the extra 3 weeks?

I am disappointed the government could take a decision like this.

Results have been bad. Now we take 3 weeks off again!

Na wah ooo.

PoliticsMopol Sacks Children Hospital In Ibadan On Child's Death by ibadanchap(op): 7:42pm On Nov 25, 2009
I just heard on the NTA Ibadan 7 o'clock news how a policeman tear gassed an emergency ward in a children hospital (Oni Children Hospital, Ring Road). The child was bought in by the mother Tuesday night and later died. The policeman was informed this morning. In the stampede, 2 children in emergency ward also died.

Police spokesman on TV confirmed the incidence and says it's under investigation but also went on to say the Mopol was called to the hospital to be informed about his child's death, in his agony people held him and in the process the tear gas canister fell down and went off.

I was sad watching the police spokesman talk, you said the incident is under investigation and yet you went on to say what happened, justifying the mopol when he (spokesman) was not there and other eye witnesses, including a man whose child was abandoned under treatment by doctors during the incident, says otherwise.

Do we have hope in Nigerian police?

Thank God the Mopol was not holding a gun that would also have fallen down and gone off.

With that tie poised at 0-0, Lampard expects Chelsea to be more attacking at home.

He said: "We did play quite a containing game in the first leg and at home we will obviously have a lot more of an attacking mind.

"I just think they have so many options on the ball that you can't come to Spain and open up against them on their own pitch.

"You have to be very disciplined in the roles and work very hard. You have to do a lot of selfless running, not particularly flashy running, and I think we've got our reward.

"Both teams can still win it from here. If they score at our place, it's difficult for us but we have to have confidence."

What Hiddink did was no stroke of genius,  relegation bound teams in La Liga do that shit too and get the results they want sometimes. Nine men behind the ball are hard to get by regardless of what team they play for.
What would have been the stroke of genius? going out on attack with a major defender on suspension? i still believe gus did the best thing in his position. What fun will it be to lose by 4-0. Even if chelsea had lost by 2-0, i can imagine what pple will be saying on this thread, no matter what kind of football they played. Even after the fantastic liverpool q.final, i did not see any objectivity from non chelsea fans about the match. all they were saying was barca will destroy chelsea.

Chelsea has never won the ucl and i believe they need to do all they have to do to rectify that. Please lets watch the 2nd leg b4 we conclude they are not playing the way champions do.

They did not do anything outside the laws of football. ugly game? may be. but being out of the ucl for chelsea is uglier. And it's not as if we dont score. chelsea has scored more than manu and arsenal in the present ucl season.

I think there has been a lot of unfair criticism of chelsea here.

I have just taken a look at the statistics of this year's UCL and of the four teams remaining in the competition, only Barca has scored more goals than Chelsea ( Barca - 29, Chelsea -19, Arsenal -16, ManU - 15) In terms of possession Barca also has the highest ( Barca - 62%, Chelsea - 51%, Arsenal -53%, ManU - 55%)

Several people have mention in their posts that Chelsea's advantage is the physical strength of their players. Now if u were Chelsea's coach/player will you play to your opponents strength or your's? Cramming may not be the best to pass an exam, but if u don't have any choice than to cram because u don't understand and you pass, will the pass be bad?

It would have been foolish for Gus/Chelsea to open up to the highest scoring and most possession having side in the UCL. His brief is to win the UCL, not play according to Barca's wishes and style. A lot of pple never gave Chelsea a chance against juve and liverpool, even with a 3-1 away advantage in liverpool's case.

If Nigeria had played against a side with barca's attack, and came away with 0-0, we would be happy with that team/coach.

I think the 2nd leg will be tough for chelsea, as barca is good. But there is no evidence to write chelsea off.
