wisesystem: Just got back from the office, still no hint of all the issues earlier mentioned. Looking like the culprit of my car issues was the lower lamba O2 sensor which a scan with PP2000 revealed. since I changed the faulty lower lamba sensor I haven't had misfiring issues. still observing the outcome though and hope the next couple of days would prove me right or wrong.

Note that the power steering issue I mentioned was actually when unknown to me the upper lamba sensor cable got stuck in the connecting rod to the steering wheel.
Thats good to hear.

Have been busy for somedays now.

JUO: YES, THAT WAS WHY I TOOK THE PICTURE BECAUSE I KNEW YOU WILL COME UP WITH THIS LOGIC. TAKE A LOOK AT THE HEAD GASKET AGAIN
Honestly, this is not something you should be proud of. Re-using a head gasket? Seriously?

Which brings the next question. What kind of mechanic would agree to re-use a head gasket? Or are you saying you couldn't find a new one in the market and chose to use the old one?

Besides, I don't really know what you are getting at. "Ikenna no sabi anything; My mechanic sabi pass Ikenna or Ikenna was giving me wrong information?". If that is your point, let me know so that next time I see your post asking for help on your car issue, I would pass, since my opinion is not sought for.

Well, I still don't understand the image you posted with this valve seal thing. I didn't see any valve seal in the image, except you meant the oil on the head gasket. If the oil on the gasket is what you have been trying to prove, then what concerns oil with excessive fueling? What concerns oil with white smoke?

See, I don't have the strength to argue this anymore. Its your car, not mine.

JUO: ikenna please change this topic to: white smoke coming out from exhaust resolved after changing valve seal
You sounded so funny here.

What does white smoke got to do with excessive fueling? What does white smoke got to do with overheating? How could you replace valve seals without replacing the head gasket which was suggested earlier that could be faulty or causing the overheating or white smoke? Or you saying your cylinder head was removed and the old head gasket was re-used?

Are you sure you are not confusing blue colour with white colour? Unless you want to tell me faulty valve seals in VW will give white smoke symptom, which makes it an Alien technology?

Failed valve seals will cause rich running, but white smoke is not one of its symptoms. If the valve seals would either give blue smoke, as sign of oil burning. Or do you mean valve seats? Because thats the only thing i know that would cause rich running in fuel carburreted car, not valve seals.

JUO, the problem was not only valve seals or you didnt described the car problem well earlier. To the best of the little knowledge i have about cars, white smoke has nothing to do with valve seals.

wisesystem: Hi House! My lion has been mis-firing while idling each morning for the past two days now and when it starts the engine wont rev even with the throttle floored. The problem then goes away immediately the engine get very warm mostly between the drive from home to the office. Am suspecting the culprit to be the plugs but given my relative experience I ll appreciate your informed contributions.
Will still change the plugs whatever the outcome though for preventive maintenace reasons or as the culprit so will appreciate any information on the ideal plugs for a fox. Ikenna changed his sometime and posted some useful info on this thread, which av been searching for but cant find that particular post.

@ Ikenna no vex if you could share knowledge on this, asked my mech preemptively about the cost of good plugs and he mentioned 6000k for the four, I think NGK brand or something.Thanks.
Yes, an ignition issue, but doesn't sound like a spark plugs problem. It could be CTS or even Air filter.

The culprit can be found through manual troubleshooting which I can guide you through, but would be patient to go through it? It could take days or even weeks, but it helps me to understand my cars better each time I manually troubleshoot a fault in any of them. Otherwise, I would advice you to scan that car, if possible with pp2000.

PP2000 will tell you if the spark plugs are the culprit. Not only that, it will go further and tell you which of the plugs (#1,#2,#3 or #4 plugs) that is causing the misfiring or all of them. If its the ignition coil, CTS, MAP or whatever component that is causing the problem, it will display the faulty component. PP2000 will also tell you how good your fuel pump is.

A failing spark plug will give mis-firing symptom sometimes, but most times, the car will rough idle. But since you said the problem goes away as soon as the engine warms, I doubt spark plugs are the culprit, unless tested and ruled out.

Car TalkRe: How To Replace The Clutch Of A Car Yourself by Ikenna351(m): 9:48pm On Jul 26, 2013
kingschild123: You can if you have the proper tools and know-
how. Changing a clutch is a big job on a rear-
wheel drive car or truck, and an even tougher
job on a front-wheel drive car or minivan.
On a rear-wheel drive vehicle, the driveshaft,
transmission and bellhousing have to be
removed from underneath the vehicle to get at
the clutch. The clutch can then be unbolted
from the flywheel and replaced. Resurfacing the
flywheel is recommended -- and required if the
flywheel is warped, grooved, badly worn, heat
discolored and/or contaminated with grease or
oil. That means the flywheel has to come out,
too. If the flywheel is cracked, it should be
replaced.
In addition to replacing the clutch, a new throw-
out bearing is also recommended. Considering
the labor involved to tear everything apart, it's
risky to reuse an old throw-out bearing. It may
not be noisy now, but it's hard to tell how many
miles it might have left in it.
The pilot bushing in the end of the crankshaft
that supports the transmission input shaft should
also be inspected. Replacement is recommended
if your vehicle has a lot of miles on it.
Reinstalling the transmission is the most difficult
part of the job because the transmission is
heavy (which means you'll need a floor or
transmission jack, or a pair of strong arms). The
clutch must also be perfectly aligned (with a
pilot tool) so the transmission input shaft will
slip into place, once everything has been bolted
together.
With front-wheel drive, replacing the clutch is
even more difficult because it involves pulling
the engine or dropping the transaxle (both of
which are major undertakings because of all the
disassembly that's involved). For this, you'll
need an engine hoist to pull the engine or a hoist
or beam to support the engine from above while
the transaxle comes out.
Hope you know Plagiarism is a serious offence? The Admin of the forum can be sued for that. Just saying.

odume10: Auto electrician, after dabbling with d relays which later returned to their original position d only thing he did was disconnect d lower socket attached to d body of radiator which I later reconnected.

This car is just 2weeks old now and am not saying I prefer d way my old car was, if I did I won't be on dis thread cos I ve learnt a lot from ppl like u.

Pls how can I do d bleeding and can I call u? What time wld be appropriate?

Thanks a lot.
Well, you sounded "the abused state of my former car served me well o! Am not sure of what am getting myself into, reverting the present car to factory state". So that's why I made that comment.

Anyway, for the bleeding, each car or brand has method of bleed the cooling system. Peugeots do have bleed screws for the bleeding. I would suggest you check your owners manual for how to bleed your car's cooling system, if you have the manual. For Peugeots, their cooling systems must be bleed with the engines off. But someone was saying the other day that his car's cooling system (I have forgotten the car brand) is to be bled with the engine running. He could be right.

Generally, the best time to bleed a cooling system is when engine is cold, especially in the morning before the first start. If you bleed when engine is hot, there will be vacuum in the system which will make the coolant level to drop when the engine gets cold as if there is a leakage on the system. Air will likely be trapped as well. A cooling system with absence of thermostat will tolerate air in the system, unless you get stuck in a traffic jam for long. But a system with thermostat wont tolerate trapped air in the system at all. Because the air will get trapped behind the thermostat and remain in the cylinder heads/engine blocks. The air will make the fluid to over boil within minutes since the fluid is not getting to radiator to be cooled off. So whatever you do, you must bleed that system properly. Even if you take it to a mechanic to do it for you, leave the car to cool off for hours, so that the coolant temperature will drop.

Now, lets go back to the genesis. Before you took the car to the electrician to change that fan connection, were you experiencing overheating? Or you asked the electrician to bypassed the factory connection as a form of preventative maintenance to prevent the car from overheating, since the former car had it and didn't give issue? Did you at any point experienced what you saw your temp gauge indicating last night (niddle resting on red zone)?

I asked the questions above to find out why the fan refused to work after it was reverted to factory, you said. Because if the fans were working before the bypassed; if the temp gauge never hit the red zone before the bypassed, even when in traffic jam, then the electrician has not truly reverted the connection to factory, simple. Probably, he didn't like that you didn't have confidence in the work he did for you, by you asking him to revert what he did. He probably decided to prove a point to you by not connecting it properly, so that the fan wont work and then you run back to him "sorry, you were right".

Anyway, for most cars, the CTS controls the radiator electric fans. The CTS will first signal to engine ECU/ECM, then the ECU will trigger the fan on depending on the values it receives from the CTS. I don't know what your fans trigger is. If its your CTS via ECU, then I doubt if your fan's factory connection is faulty. Usually, there should be a fuse and relay (s) between the ECU signal wire to the fans. I would check that out. But I want to believe they are still intact, unless the electrician intentionally disconnected them.

It appears you don't really have the confidence to run that car with the factory cooling system connection. If you believe that the state which you left the cooling system of your former car was better, you can always revert to it. Its your car, we don't have the right to dictate to you how to use her. Its a choice you the owner has to make.

As for what you said about the fan in the above quoted post, it appears you didn't revert the fan to factory connection you said you did. You simply disconnected the fan from the abuse/wrong connection without connecting it back to the factory trigger source. Who removed the factory connection before? You, mechanic or auto-electrician?

About the honda accord ball joint falling apart, u might be right but to some extent. Its not just Honda accord ball joints that fall apart. I have see lots of Benz with fallen ball joints on the road. The problem with honda is substandard parts sold in Nigeria. I drive a 2005 Accord and I have experienced a fallen ball joint once. My fault because i allowed the mechanic to put a fake ball joint when I first bought the car. Even my current mechanic saw it then and told me it won't be long before it falls off which eventually did after a few months. There are original ball joints in Ebutte Metta. They are more expensive but be sure they won't fall off easily like the fake ones that litter the market. I really don't know why part dealers ship a lot of fake Honda ball joints into our market so people beware. The fact still remains there are genuine ones.

One more thing.. the reason u see more Honda or Toyota that have broken down on the road is because on an average Nigerian road, before u see 1 german/european car, u would have counted about 7 toyotas and hondas.
You made it sound as if only Jap cars have fake parts in the country. Eh? How many Toyotas have you seen with their ball joints pulling apart on our roads? What about the Toyota shock absorbers that fail every other day? Are you saying other brands dont jump those gullies and potholes with them, yet theirs will fail before you say jack?

My point is, these are design flaws. A Toyota Camry will enter Nigeria shore and be driven for 3 years. The 4th year, the suspension will fail. Yet, nothing has happened to the front swivel/ball joint, even after 5 years or more on our beautiful roads. A Honda Accord would be shipped into the country and sold the same year the Camry was brought in. 2 years later, the ball joint fails, while the suspension remained intact even upto 4 years or more.

I dont defend Peugeots where they have flaws. Each car or brand has peculiar issues. It got nothing to do with quality of parts. Yes, the fake parts will make them fail soon, but you may find out that a company will produce two fake ball joints for two different cars. One may last longer than the other and the other fails sooner than expected. Installation or design matters. Probably, there is something wrong with the way the front end mechanicals of Accord rest on those ball joints that make them fail often than others.

PRV engine in early Volvo 760 GLE was the same PRV engine in 505 V6. Both were manufactured in the same compound, but were coupled differently by each manufacturer. Unfortunately, the Volvo 760 GLE suffered camshaft failure uptill 1988 due to oil stavation in that chamber. Yet, no single 505 V6 was ever reported to have had such camshaft wear or failure. The two comapnies assembled the engines with the same parts, but different installation/design. It was later in 1988 that Volvo got it right.

So, its not always about the fake products in our markets, but design flaws as well. Visit Honda online forums and you will see Nigerians are not the only people complaining of the peculiar issues with the Honda, even from those that bought them new, used them before we took over.

elektra80: The reason u still see 1982 Mercedes Benz around in Nigeria is because those days Japanese cars haven't really perfected their technology. Those days of regular Benz and Volvo. Those days only the extremely rich can afford a car, But of recent u have to give it to the Japanese. They make cars for every category depending on ur pocket and their cars are reliable. You can abuse a Japanese car but u can't try that with European cars without messing things up, You also have to give it to Japanese cars for making cars cheaper and more affordable today. Its called competition. If Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda have not forced their ways into the market, I'm sure we will still be buying cars at extremely expensive prices. Its just like when GSM first came into the country. I remember I bought my first MTN sim card for 23,000 naira because there was no competition. There was no 3g not to talk of HSPA+ and yet expensive. I believe the competition the Japanese cars gave made Benz and BMW to start making affordable cars. Also someone said Japanese cars are junks, so why is Toyota and Honda still the best selling cars even in the USA. Simply put, u want an everyday car, buy a japanese car. You want a car u drive occasionally, then Benz, Audi, BMW etc.
This your analysis, na wa o! What is it with this USA everywhere. You are sounding as if anything that is not in American market or not used by Americans is not good, genuine or considered better. What made you think Americans know better than Europeans? What made you think what they reject is considered junk? Why do you find them so supperior to inhabitants of other regions? I dont know how to tell you this, but its bad to have the idea that whatever a fellow being likes is better than what you have or likes. That is big time follow-follow propaganda.

North Americans drive more of petrol cars, while Europeans drive more of diesels. Dose that means the North Americans knows better than the Europeans? Americans drive more of auto tranny cars, while Europeans still demand for manual trans cars. Does it means Europeans think through their anus?

Honda Accord has American speccs and Euro speccs of the same year model of all Accord generations. Ever bothered to know why? Honda knows what Europeans wants in a car and they give them what they want, likewise the North Americans. Each specifications is according to market demand.

My point? Stop using what Americans drive or what sells more there as yardstick as what is the best. Each region/people got their taste.

USA and Canada never got Peugeot 406 and subsequent newer Peugeot products. Yet, 406 sold massivley in other continents. Can you go out, find a parked 406, take a close look at her and come back and tell me "there is nothing special about the car"? So because Canada and US didnt drive 406, the car no follow, abi? Nigerians are even going for the cheap RHD converted 406 just to enjoy the product. Do you know how Americans wished they had got the 406 in various online French car forums?

Now, back to your analysis proper. Who told you Benz and BMW car prices have dropped from what they used to be back in the days? Help me out here. What are the prices of brand new 2012/Toyota Camry, Collora, Yaris, etc? Also, what are the prices of brand new 2012/2013 Benz E-class, C-class, A-class, etc. Please, give the USD equivalents.

Am waiting.

Airlock. You have air trapped in the cooling system while refilling the system after re-installing the thermostat. You need to bleed the air out.

By the way, i hope the fans connection way properly reverted to factory? Did you make sure it spins after the connection when temp guage needle rest on the middle, while engine is idling?

Am going to put back the thermostat and revert the fan connection but pls how would I know if the thermostat is bad and where can I get the one replace? 82degrees C is written on it. As for how to test Thermostat, Pot method is very simple, since the thermostat is out already. You can as well buy a new one and install instead. But I would suggest you test the new one before you install. Whichever one you decide to install, test it in a pot of boiling water to be sure its still opening at required opening temperature, which is 82 C engraved on it like you pointed. I have explained this method on so many threads. Will try and explain the method again when am less busy.

Car TalkRe: Camry 99 Thermostat Removal by Ikenna351(m):
kakameks: I agree that thermostat were installed for a reason, mainly to regulate the temperature of the engine but I fail to understand how it affects fuel economyhuh

I know that for the temperature regulator the main benefactor is the engine oil as if the engine is too hot the oil thins out and if it is too viscous the efficiency of the oil pump is affected.

If the argument was that the engine will burn at a higher rpm (more fuel) to try and reach optimum temperature. I agree that it affects fuel consumption for that STARTING period but once it is running I really don't see how it affect mpg for naturally aspirated cars? the petrol engine unlike diesel engine uses a spark plug to ignite the fuel-air mixture and not the high compression/temperature ratio that diesel uses.

It is when you speak of turbo charged cars that I can fully agree that the temperature helps performance even though the turbo charger compress and heats the air before force-feeding it to the engine.

I maybe wrong in my line of though so any one that has a better explanation how the thermostat affects MPG should kindly enlighten me.
The answer to your question is CTS (Coolant Temperature Sensor). Let me explain this with my ZN3J Ignition/Injection system.

At early morning, before I start the car, the CTS will give 2-3volts. This indicates that coolant is cold. A cold engine will need more fuel more than when the engine is hot to start and run. When I start the car, the CTS will signal 2.4v or 3v to the injection ECU and Ignition ECU, depending on the temperature of the coolant, which in this case, the coolant temperature is determined by the weather/outside temperature. For example, if I leave starting the car till it gets to hot afternoon (about 30 C), the CTS will signal about 1.8 or 2 volts to the ECU, since the coolant is now warm because of the hot sun or weather. So the colder the weather, the colder the coolant and higher the value the CTS signals to ECU.

Now, as I start the car, the CTS already signaled 3v to the ECUs via signal wires. The ECU will inject excess fuel and increase the spark to burn that excess fuel the injectors spray into the combustion chambers. Note that the ECUs commands the injectors the amount of fuel to spray in, determined by the various signals/values they (ECUs) receive from sensors/components scattered on the engine, exhaust, etc. But if my ECUs wrongly receive low value from CTS (like 1v) when the engine is very cold, since the coolant is cold, then the engine wont start, no matter how I crank it. Because the small fuel and less spark the ECUs commands the sparks plugs to spark via coils and injectors, wont start a cold engine. Such amount of fuel or spark is meant to start already warm/hot engine, not a cold one.

As the cold engine starts and runs, the coolant warms up via the activities going on in the combustion chambers. The coolant warms up because of the presence of Thermostat. The thermostat blocks the coolant from flowing to radiator so that the coolant will warm up faster to reduce the values the CTS signal to the ECUs. The lower the values from CTS to ECUs as coolant warms up, the smaller the fuel injectors spray into the combustion chambers via intake valves. If the Thermostat is absent, the water pump will constantly continue to be circulating the coolant from cylinder head and engine walls to radiator, without letting the coolant warm up. It makes worse if the radiator fan is spinning constantly. In this case, the fans wont even allow the small warm coolant in the cylinder walls to remain warm before the water pump pushes the coolant ro radiator and back to the cylinder walls and the head cylinders. But with thermostat present, the water pump will be circulating the warm coolant between the head cylinders and the engine walls/block, to make the engine warm up faster and make the warm engine oil to lubricate the engine better.

The faster the coolant gets warm/hot, the warmer the engine oil becomes for proper lubrication. The coolant temperature determines the engine oil temperature too.

Thermostat is there to regulate the coolant temperature, as coolant gets hotter, it will sense the temperature and open. When it opens, the water pump will push out the over hot coolant into the radiator via the thermostat. The same water pump will push back the already cooled coolant in the radiator, which was there all the while the thermostat was closed, while the coolant in the engine remain warm or at normal operating temp for the engine. AS soon the cooled coolant enters the engine, it will touch the thermostat. The thermostat will sense the low coolant temperature and gradually close up. The cooled coolant trapped in the engine will start getting warm again and remain at optimal temp for the engine, depending on the speed of the car. While the over hot coolant that was pushed into the radiator will trigger on the fan which will start spinning. The fan will suck out the heat from the coolant trapped in the radiator. As the temp of coolant trapped in the radiator drops, the fan will switch itself off via the radiator switch that switched it on in the first place. The fan will remain off pending when the thermostat opens again and cycle continues.

So, to your question, thermostat determines how much fuel your car consumes via the CTS. Why? If the thermostat is absent, the coolant will remain cold or will always run very cold. If your coolant is always cold, your CTS will always signal high values to the ECU, telling it to make the injectors spray excess fuel into combustion chambers, even when your engine doesn't need such amount of fuel. And your engine oil will remain cold for a very long time, causing severe friction in your engine, since the coolant which is suppose to warm the engine oil is also cold too.

Summary, Thermostat does so much work for the engine, such that removing it means signing a death warrant for that engine, not just hindering fuel economy when not in the system.

Let me ask you, who owns that car? You or your mechanic? So even if your mechanic ask you to pour in salt into engine via oil filler, you go ahead with it? In fact, what you have done so far is almost the samething as mixing salt with your engine oil with your very hand. Beacause your engine will eventually die the way an engine with salty oil dies. Only that it will take longer in your case.

If i were you, i will quickly revert that car cooling system to how it was when you first got her, unless you are ready to be replacing or rebuilding that engine every now and then.

alpha conde: If u keep the themostat in ur car ur car will be confused since nigeria isn't an extremely cold place, so when its hot ur car will over heat. Ur mech is right. Some Pple asking u not to remove it don't even know where a themostat is in their car neither do they know the function.
What's your point?

Car TalkRe: Toyota Matrix(manual): Car Vibrates Heavily On Biting/catching Point. by Ikenna351(m): 10:25am On Jul 24, 2013
segunb: Hello Good Nairaland People,

I just bought a Toyota Matrix 2003 XRS Manual transmission with 6 Gears (Toks), its a beautiful car though old. My question is this - Whenever I shift into the gear 1 and just about to move the car normally cars vibrate on 'biting points', but this one vibrates so much that I even have to give the accelerator more gas before the car moves - its as if something is holding it before that initial move and you have to put in more force. What are your suggestions before I take it to the mechanic.

N.B: If you know of a very good mechanic that is quite experienced with Toyota Matrix around Ikeja - I wouldn't mind.
It depends.

Have you checked the wheels for brake binding?

Drive the car for about 10-15 mins. Stop the car, come down and touch the 4 wheels. I mean the steel or Alloy wheels not the wheel covers. If any feels extremely hot, then the brake flexible hose or the caliper is the culprit. Replace the blocked flexible hose or wash and rekit the stuck opened pinions of the caliper, depending on which is the culprit.

If more than 2 wheels are are extremely hot (2 front wheels, 2 rear wheels or the 4 wheels), then the blake master cylinder is the culprit. Rekit it and the problem will be gone.

There is another method of testing for brake binding. Jack the 4 wheels, one after the other. Rotate each one up with your hand. It should be free. If any refuses to move, then the wheel's flexible hose or caliper is the culprit. If 2 or 4 wheels refuse to rotate, then you know the culprit and the solution i mentioned above.

Aside the brake binding test, there is something else am suspecting, but needed to get you clearly.

When the car is stationaly and you want to move with gear 1, does the rpm drops rapidly, irrespective of how you rev the car?

By the way, slipperly clutch plate will make your rpm jump higher than it should when trying to move the car, irrespective of how low you accelerate the car.

@ we we,

So this was how the car was when it happened. Yes, you told me earlier about the incident, but i didnt quite get the pic until now.

I saw the car in front of your office few weeks ago. If not for the bonnet and fender with different colours to the body, i would have thought it wasnt your car. Whoever did that job must be good in what he does.

From the pictures, i could see that the chassis wasnt really affected. Peugeot maynot be the best brand, but they are so good in designing chassis. Anyone that knows the importance of good designed and strong chassis, would understand what i mean.

We thank God for you and your family.

Car TalkRe: Today Is The Worst Day Of My Life Pls HELP!!!! by Ikenna351(m):
Worst day of your life keh! Your car dey inside your compound dey look you and you dey cry? What about those that drove to a restaurant, park their cars, went in, ate, only for them to come out to drive off and start asking themselves "am I sure i touched my car key today, not to think off parking the car at this very spot some minutes ago?" Some would even run mad for some minutes before it would down on them that their cars have gone or stolen. Which day you go call that one then?

We must not drive every day. At least, you dey wake up and come back dey look your car. Its there, not running away. Ignore her if you don't have her time. When you do have her time, fix the problem.

dubem3: You can really be funny.
Why not just knock off the exhaust so you can get all the noise you want from the D9 grin grin
its ironic how the same car that has efficient fuel consumption and good speed is abandoned for a moaning old lady tongue tongue tongue... so when are you going East?
Have you forgotten that some guys prefer old ladies? grin

At least, my old Lion consumes only 70 Litres from Abuja to Enugu, 540 km, on 1 full tank, about 7k. So I don't think 7k is too much, considering the fun to catch on those hours on the highway. It average 22 mpg on highway.

Not sure when my next trip to East would be. It could be any weekend. I could just wake up one morning, face her nose to East and drive back the next 2 days. I do that often.
