MESSIAH
Definition: Messiah is the transliteration of a Hebrew term, Mashiach. The New Testament (Greek) equivalent is Christos. Both terms mean "the anointed one." The verb mashach, found about 140 times in the Old Testament, means "to smear, anoint, or spread."
Description: The verb was frequently used for the ceremonial induction into leadership. Three types of leaders were anointed:
Prophets- represented God among the people (1 Kings 19:15-16).
Priests- represented the people before God through sacrifices and prayers (Ex. 28:40-41).
Kings- defended and ruled over the people on Gods behalf
(1 Sam.16:12-13).

Implications: The anointing meant that someone was authorized to serve God in a position of honor and responsibility. Divine enablement often accompanied the anointing. While many were anointed, only One was given the title of "the Anointed One."- Jesus Christ
@Ronke,how come no other 'prophet' was referred to as THE annointed(Al masih) in the Qu'ran including the holy prophet?

Al Masih(Arabic)=mashiah (Heb)=Messias,Christos(Greek) = Messiah,the Christ (english)

There's a difference between 'to annoit','annointing' & THE Annointed !

Yekini was our messiah in Tunisia 1994 nations cup,but he's not THE Messiah (Al Masih)- as quoted in the relevant Sunnah above, just like you have numerous gods & God !

messiah
c.1300, Messias, from L.L. Messias, from Gk. Messias, from Aramaic meshiha and Heb. mashiah "anointed" (of the Lord), from mashah "anoint." This is the word rendered in Septuagint as Gk. Khristos (see Christ). In O.T. prophetic writing, it was used of an expected deliverer of the Jewish nation. The modern Eng. form represents an attempt to make the word look more Heb., and dates from the Geneva Bible (1560). Transf. sense of "an expected liberator or savior of a captive people" is attested from 1666.
Christ
title given to Jesus of Nazareth, O.E. crist, from L. Christus, from Gk. khristos "the anointed" (translation of Heb. mashiah; see messiah), from khriein "to rub, anoint." The L. term drove out O.E. hæland "healer" as the preferred descriptive term for Jesus. A title, treated as a proper name in O.E., but not regularly capitalized until 17c. Pronunciation with long -i- is result of Ir. missionary work in England, 7c.-8c. The Ch- form, regular since c.1500, was rare before

Why I cannot become a muslim.

Sorry I have been really busy.

Again,I must repeat,I respect Islam & love muslims,& I strongly believe if i had been born into a muslim,I'd probably be the moderator of the NL Islamic section  grin .

Reason 2

The muslim contradictions on Jesus Christ.

This is probably the most contentious difference between islam & christianity - the place of Jesus Christ,we regard him as the Son of God,many muslims believe Jesus is a very important prophet, second only to the Holy prophet.

But a look at the qu'ran shows us that only one 'prophet' was ever given the title Messiah (Al Masih)
[3.45] When the angels said: O Marium, surely Allah gives you good news with a Word from Him (of one) whose name is the '. Messiah, Isa son of Marium, worthy of regard in this world and the hereafter and of those who are made near (to Allah).
And from islamic theology,
1. Jesus is still ALIVE !- unlike all other prophets of the Qu'ran(from Adam to the Holy prophet Mohammed(pbuh) )
2.So how can a prophet who is 2nd in importance to the Holy Prophet Mohammed (pbuh), be referred to as the Messiah (which also means Saviour ,Redeemer,Liberator etc)

Who or what is he saving, redeeming? Please respond within the context of him being 2nd to the great prophet of Islam.

No 3 on the way. . . . . . . wink

Enlightened responses please

@Jarus,I appreciate your point of view. . .  .but is it also possible it may be a case of misdiagnosis ?  undecided

many of the 'jinn stories' may actually be associated with fatigue

When is it a jinn & when is it your mind deliberating issues? I believe in demons etc,but where I faulted you was where you said
Jarus:
Apart from the attack on a family member which by Allah's mercy, Qur'anic recitation solved, and the one narrated by Nairalander Bindex, a non-Muslim, let me narrate some other real life cases of exorcism in Nigeria here and some abroad.
THE IRAQ LADY
I read this. She was a Muslim sister, very well-known for her love of Islam and training of children in the area. Suddenly, she started behaving strangely, and carrying Christian crosses. It was observed she had been possessed by Jinns. The exorcist method of reciting Qur'an etc was administered on her and she became well again. Lets have links/proof please
IslamRe: Islam And Exorcism by illusion2: 9:10am On Mar 16, 2010
Really interesting how the christian cross is associated with jinns in jarus' example.

I have heard numerous testimonies of devout muslims coming for deliverance in church & recanting how they got possessed reading the Qu'ran.

There are also numerous web stories of Jesus appearing to muslims during the hajj & telling them christianity is the way.  shocked

My Hindu friend has a lot of stories of Krishna delivering possessed people in India as well  grin

My suggestion:

Take in all these jinn deliverance 'testimonies' with a pinch of salt. . . .

I have made a decision to limit my interaction in this section to intelligent people like Lagosboy, muhsin etc. . . some other people just get personal unnecessarily, probably due to their level of education/exposure.  sad

Now my pal- LB (I'll respond to your post on BELIEF & KNOWLEDGE a bit later) & other reasonable & intelligent posters wink
Why I cannot become a muslim

I took time to emphasise my convictions above, because I don’t want to fall into the trap of ‘insulting Islam’ etc, because religion is such a sensitive topic that people easily get offended.

So please do not get offended, this is STRICTLY my opinion, which all of God’s creations are entitled to ,I love muslims and I respect their faith & I see my self as really open minded.

Reason No 1

Historical records
:
The three great religions – Judaism, Christianity & Islam, arrived on earth in that order.

They all have similar records of history – Adam, Moses, Jesus etc.

I think it’s a little bit too convenient for Islam to say the previous 2 faiths' books are ‘corrupted’ and only its own version(Qu'ran) is correct, when even the process of putting together the Qu’ran itself is contentious.

Don’t get me wrong, I have my own concerns about some Biblical records,(Matt 1 & Luke 3),but by & large the Old testament of the Christian bible tallies with the Jewish version of events, all of which existed during the time of the holy prophet (Surah 2: 23,62,105 etc)
.

If we were to take the latest version of events in all cases then the Ahmadiyya version of Islam should be the most authentic  undecided or better still we should adopt the teachings of the 'perfect living master' - Sat Guru Maharaji  tongue

So the explanation that God sent the Holy prophet to come & 'perfect' or 'correct' the other belief systems does not hold water IN MY OWN OPINION ! more to follow. . . . .

Apologies for being harsh but this is incredibly dumb and i dont see where i insinuated such. Millions of arab muslims fly through Ben Gurion airport in Israel every yr . . . despite the fact that Israel is highly security conscious and is about the only country to employ racial profiling to prevent terrorist attacks.
David, you've started again with your half-truths. Total ARAB MUSLIM population of Israel is just over ONE MILLION,so where did the millions of arab muslims flying through Ben Gurion airport yearly come from. .  undecided even assuming ALL israeli arab muslims fly EVERY year which is highly unlikely if not outright impossible.

I'll be watching all your half truths from now on. . . so be careful what you post on NL.

Unfortunately SPAMBOT has chased me from the Mossad thread.

On the OIC,I don't see any problem with it. . . ,  its just that we mix up Islamic extremism, Hausa-Fulani politics, general corruption,PDP ineptitude & lack of strong institutions in Nigeria. Any serious government will & should  capitalise on all connections it can garner.

Turkey is a leading country in the OIC & they are more liberal than most parts of Northern Nigeria.

Aside Saudi Arabia, majority of other 'muslim' countries practise the moderate interpretation of Islam.

The OIC can give us levearge where the Western world will not. Just as we should network with China & other BRIC countries  as well

All this is coming from a CHRISTIAN !
IslamRe: Curious About Islam, facts About Islam. by illusion2: 12:39pm On Mar 12, 2010
Why I cannot become a muslim

Before I give my reasons,I need to state somethings.

One- its important all of us regard each other 1st as human beings, then other identities e.g religion, tribe, state of origin etc.

This fundamental issue is at the heart of all the hate & problems we have in Nigeria & beyond (from christians ,muslims alike). We are quick to identify with any one that claims to share our beliefs even if that person is the most despicable human being on earth.

Similarly ,we easily dismiss any one that doesn't share our faith, which is sad.

Because we have a lot of really wonderful human beings who do not believe what we believe ,the world is full of these.

Two- I strongly suspect almost all human beings aspire for the good things of life- the desire to succeed in their careers, have healthy families & live prosperous lives. These empirical human needs cuts across race/religion/continent.

So in a nutshell, what is common to us is much more than what divides us

Finally-this may be controversial, but its important we separate what we believe from what we know.

For example I KNOW the capital of Nigeria is Abuja (we know this). . . but issues of Heaven,hell,God,paradise-we BELIEVE.

So its strange how we can nearly kill ourselves over things WE DO NOT KNOW but believe.

If someone was arguing with me that the capital of Nigeria is Kano & not Abuja. . . I could bet my life on it (or swear if it suits you). . . but on things of faith,we all BELIEVE ,but DO NOT KNOW for a certainty. . . so lets keep this in mind.

My reasons next. , . . .
