The fact is ECOWAS is grossly inefficient and clearly ineffective. sad

Every right thinking country should try to resolve its own problems 1st and foremost. smiley

This Ghanaian decision ,if true,is certainly myopic. . . but can anyone blame them ? huh.

If Nigeria's leaders were thinking about their own country we wouldn't be in this mess we're in. angry

Sadly, we do not employ our leaders based on past records of success and show of ability to understand, analyse and make good judgements, rather we corronate them along lines of inheritance; they in turn proceed to appoint similarly ignorant advisers ( we refer to them as party loyals who have degrees in whatever field you may want, just name it, but never posses a record for meaningful contribution to the field -- what a joke smiley ) .

Until this country's leadership selection process is truly based on achievement cum qualification records, we will continue to get it wrong at policy development, intercontinental contracts and agreements. In every contract, all parties must protect their own interest, but because our leaders do not even understand the contract, not to talk of seeing the underlying long term loss to be incured than the immediate short term gain to the economy and their own pockects and image, they cannot but continue to serve the western world who have realised this and will continue to boast of their ability to manage us.

Go and study the profile of all British and US govenors, senators, presidents and you will understand why they are succesful at international assignments. They are not people who have failed careerwise or at the local level. Look at Nigerian govenors, senators and all the others officials and you will understand why we are have this thread in play.

I can see our ‘discussion’ like most on NL is going around in circles, let me just summarise your view against mine
1. Washington Consensus
ROSSIKE : The Washington consensus is at the root of all the developing world’s problems !

ILLUSION2
: I say this is at best an infantile point of view, why I ask you has this conspiracy not affected the Asian Tigers, India, Brazil, china ,South Africa ,to a large extent Botswana? And how come this 'grand' conspiracy did not prevent the credit crises, fall of major financial institutions etc?

2. ZIMBABWE
ROSSIKE : The above conspiracy can also be traced to all of Zimbabwe's problems. .
ILLUSION2: . .again I say hogwash. . . . the situation in Zim was a complex one,it required a complex solution. . .’land redistribution ‘ was a simplistic solution to a complex prob. . .okay if he knew he would kill his economy as the blacks couldn’t manage the farms. . .it begs the question . . .why did he do it?  undecided Your claims ‘that the white’s didn’t invest in Zim, is laughable. . . . .they were bloody citizens !!!  All their land ,business nko? To end this debate i want you to research BEE (Black Economic Empowerment) program the South African solution to their own ‘white problem’. . .  . . .let me know if you spot any difference in execution & of course results.

ROSSIKE:
Today, the Zimbabwean economy is growing at 7% annually. They are coming back. They are learning to drive their car.
Did you really type this . . . . I laugh in Swahili. . . . . a country with a worthless currency,100 million % inflation as of late 2008 . . you can’t be serious ! They only just formed the unity govt last year & the jury is still out on their economic prognosis. . . don’t jump to conclusions my friend.

3. Brazil
Don’t waste time on this ,the 2 countries cannot be compared in any way ,not least the most important to me football grin,so don’t even start. . . they have slums. . so? Wch part of Nigeria isn’t a slum including Ikoyi? Do they have problems like all other countries on earth . . . certainly. . .but that does not remove from the fact that they are far ahead of us sadly, tho’ with similar population.
I wonder when u-20 world cup became equal with Olympics & senior world cup, even Trinidad don host u-17 b4,Im not saying we dnt have the potential, d point Im making is with our resources we should be competing for the big ones not handouts

4. America’s(or Obama’s) influence on the world
ROSSIKE: America seeks to influence all countries for its own gain
ILLUSION2: Before nko? When dem no be Nigeria that invested heavily to bring peace to Liberia & couldn’t even get a mention in her Presidents  inauguration address, or Nigeria that sacrificed to bring down apartheid (I remember having some south Africans in Sec school back in the days),yet we’re the butt of every joke in ZA ,we couldn’t even convince them to support our candidate for ADB president (African dev bank). . . Every country seeks to take advantage , becos nobody’s here to ‘count bridge’ permit my lagos slang. . . .its left to each country to determine what is good for it.
ROSSIKE:
Here's where you miss the point. Even an honest leader -  a saint in fact - who comes into power in Nigeria, and is told immediately upon assumption of power, by the IMF or World Bank, to confirm that Nigeria will continue to abide by her ''international commitments'' to ''free-market reforms'' as operated by previous administrations, and the new leader says ''well of course yes. Nigeria will maintain all commitments to you, our international partners, and will do nothing to discourage foreign investment in the country, and will maintain continuity in policy implementation etc etc, '', once that is done, the country's been HAD again.
And what will happen if the honest president refuses (like Chavez). . . you underestimate the power of corruption and rather overestimate your conspiracy

5. UNITED STATES OF AFRICA
ROSSIKE: We will solve all our problems with ‘central administration’ of African countries
ILLUSION2: Another laughable idea. . .  .this has been actively pushed by Gadaffi of Libya for many years now,the fact is you need to get your own house in order before you plan such grand schemes, the EUROPEAN ECONOMIC BLOCK is an example of how to do it. You set some parameters and people qualify, you don’t just get in just like that & pray/hope you can leverage on each other’s strengths?? You must eliminate corruption, develop individual economies to a certain extent b4 u can start talking about this grand idea. ECOWAS is an example of how just coming together & giving yourself a name has little effect on the lives of people. .  .the same would happen with UNITED STATES OF AFRICA !

In conclusion, Africa’s(& indeed Nigeria’s)  probs are indeed complex . . . . . .corruption, tribalism are at the root of most of these probs, you could argue the ‘western countries’ aid this by providing the necessary avenues for stolen wealth etc. . . but then what about the people whose funds are been stolen ?. . .why monkey go de work ,baboon go dey chop? angry So we the masses need to take our leaders to task (look inwards) & not believe in some conspiracy from outside cos thats what they are. . . . . conspiracy theories . . . . .
wink

I just re-read what you said about agriculture. . . .lets just say,the west due to 'import controls' etc prevent Nigeria from exportng agricultural products abroad.

WHY CAN'T NIGERIA FEED ITSELF huh shocked shocked shocked yes, they give subsidy to their farmers etc. . . but we can't even feed ourselves ,we import everything.

On IBB & MAO,tell me what did Nigerians do when abacha was killing everybody all over the place, who killed Dele Giwa? what did you do about it. A MAXIMUM ruler,is a maximum ruler, but unfortunately while the end result of MAXIMUM RULER MAO was the moving of 750 million people out of poverty in 30 years. . . the end result of MAIMUM RULER IBB was SAP imposed impovrishment of more than 70% of the population & you blame all on America ?? huh huh

why didn't Britain & America just kill Mugabe rather than all the rigmarole you are insinuating? It would have solved everything, abi?

Rossike, pls keep your responses short. . . . thanks  wink

1.Botswana : From your arguments;development is directly linked to MANUFACTURING,well I can't really explain why the INDUSTRIAL capacity of Botswana isn't up to your expectations. . . but their being landlocked may be part of it.

2.Corruption:You are indeed naive to say corruption is 'only a small part of the problem',its everything. . . .only corruption would allow a politician sell out his country like u allege,so saying corruption in only a small part of Nigeria/Africa's prob . . . is strange.

3.Like i said, stop comparing Nigeria to Brazil we are very, very far apart. . . .the latter is serious about pertinent issues. . . .Brazil will host both the World Cup and olympics in the within next  7 years. . . nigeria can't even host the comonwealth games. . .the last all Africa games in Abuja was a HUGE disaster. Tho' we have the potential to be greater than Brazil,we are becoming more like Pakistan another country with similar population)

4.The reference to chinese civilisation vis a vis Africa is not really relevant,Im certain I have more knowledge on global history & politics than you.

5.Zimbabwe: You have an idea of the issues ,but not everything, when Mandela became president of SA,many people wanted him to right all the wrongs of apartheid immediately. . . .but he saw through it and rather opted for a more gradual, systemic approach to the issues. .  .if he had taken the action Mugabe took, where would the SA economy be now? your guess is as good as mine. the fact is Mugabe did what he did for political reasons. . .how can you take over farms that are providing work, paying taxes and give it to people who have no idea on running farms? Thereby destroying the economy and turning a once vibrant country into a pariah state? he did it for political reasons ,trust me . . . Tsangarai was about to defeat him in elections , people were tired of him. . . . .he should have learnt from other 'freedom fighters in the region- Mandela,Nujoma,

6.On chavez,i have absolutely no probs with him & he actually contradicts you,cos they are also resource rich. . . the only diff is that he won a proper election, approached governance from a selfless point of view & his country is better for it. .  .

In a nutshell, your arguments aren't new . . .every country tries to take care of itself & its interest. . .the prob with Nigeria & Africa is that the leaders try to take care of themselves instead. . .& don't mind bringing down their country to achieve this.

On your 'washington Conesnsus 'conspiracy, how many years have we in Nigeria being under 'good governance'?All the political parties you mentioned have no such allegiance to ideology, they're all just power grabbers and corrupt ones at that.

China was never colonized so they never went through what Nigeria or other Africans have gone through.
Chinese Imperialism is what boosted their Economy- they profit of off capitalist
The chinese are doing what the british and America have been doing for YEARS. The only difference is the investing which gives Africans short term gain and the Chinese long term gain by having the price control in Africa. Africa is selling its sell piece by piece to foreign based companies.  America is highly indebted to China aswell

WarriBoyz:
I agree with point 1 (but not 1a). I also agree with points 2 and as a matter of course, 3. However on your other points, Africa will never be a united 'state'. It is unrealistic beyond imagining to think that would ever work. Even the few tribes in a place like Sierra Leone cannot get along, not to talk of trying to align Africa's several COUNTRIES as one cohesive block. I agree that a sea change in the general mindset is required, to combat this 'foreign creep' of ideals and culture. More appropriately stated, we have to salvage and restore the important parts of our culture that survived the brutalization of the colonial period. While at the same time incorporating the technology and ideas that serve us best from the colonists. After all, sub-saharan Africa was severely lagging behind the colonial powers when they arrived, in technological know-how. To be honest the most important thing for Nigeria now is a re-emphasis on education and an inward focus on improving ourselves. I want to see an alignment between African government that goes way beyond fancy speeches in state capitals. We need to build strong economic ties between the various African states to reduce our dependence on the West and East for imports.

We have a severe imbalance of trade with the West that serves them best and us least. But part of our problem is our youths have become propagandized to value products from the West while ignoring their own culture. Everyone wants their fancy Nike shoes and McD's burgers. Where is the encouragement of local industry? Where is the pride for Nigerian made goods? I want to see land reform and a phased economic expansion plan from the Government (agriculture->basic infrastructure->value-added industry->service industry). Its hard to believe that after 50 years of independence we have not built good basic infrastructure which is the backbone for economic development.

Instead we continue to export low priced resources, while importing high cost finished goods. No way we will ever advance with that kind of a 'strategy'! In all fairness, the pressures on us are huge, these neo-colonial powers have been playing this game for a very long time. But a united country can do wondrous things.

And for historical reference, I hope my brothers on here remember that China also suffered at the hands of colonial powers. Even more so than Nigeria did. Branding them an 'evil power' when in fact, we are the ones encouraging trade ties with them, is odd to say the least.
ROSSIKE/BABAROSSI is that you again? I suspect so ,as this is 'WarriBoyz' 1st post. , don't spam yourself my friend tongue

Oh dear. Botswana, in the league of ''serious nations''? How so?
Serious nations in what sense? How many cars or airplanes or new technologies are being released in Botswana? How many factories or industries are in Botswana? Look, I'll teach you a few things about Botswana, and how this ties in perfectly with what is being said here.
In the 80s and 90s, Botswana was the fastest growing economy not just in Africa, but in the entire world. A small country with less than 20 million people, they had vast quantities of diamonds and other minerals. A stable system of govt provided a high standard of education, and public infrastructure. All that was left was for investors from across the world to pour in and turn that nation into Africa's first Tiger economy.
But what happened?
Nothing.
No one came.
Those who came where interested primarily in extractive industries, mining diamonds and other minerals for export, NOT TO ADD VALUE to those primary products WITHIN BOTSWANA.
Where are you getting your info from? The country is almost 75% desert, landlocked. . . but currently one of the fastest growing economies in the world which qualifies if for being a serious country in my own estimation as well as the UN,since more than 60% live above the poverty line. , do they have problems ,most definitely who doesn’t but saying there’s some conspiracy not to exploit their resources is hogwash. . . capitalist are just that capitalist, where they see money they’ll go. . . .  . .  .where you got this info from I don’t know. . please provide source.
If you’re talking about them producing finished diamonds instead of exporting raw diamonds. .  .those are business decisions to be taken by the appropriate people, but if I was an investor I’d prefer my goods closer to my market, unless there’s large market for diamonds in Botswana(i thnk not),same can’t be said for cocoa products or crude oil (as in the case of Ghana,Nigeria)where a substantial local demand for the finished goods exist
ROSSIKE:
Brazil? Brazil was (and is) a Portuguese colony, whose wealth, much like America's, was built, not on any economic ''wizardry'', but rather on the free labour of captured African slaves, and is a country that has been independent since 1822!! She has few resources apart from Sugar, so is not a designated ''permanent source of raw materials'' and thus has little or no problem attracting western investors.
Again pure rubbish. .  .you need to research before posting on NL my friend. . . .  the people here are not charlatans, how can you say that about brazil ? Probably the largest producer (and user) of Ethanol in the world. . . from tourism to oil. . they are in it. . .Petrobras (their NNPC ) has investments even in Nigeria’s oil fields. . .still referring to slave trade  in 2009 beats my imagination, just like someone blaming Lord Lugard for Yar’Adull’s failure grin
ROSSIKE:
India is almost identical to Nigeria in terms of the levels of corruption and poverty. In fact in many cases it's far worse. over 500 million Indians are illiterate. India still suffers from power cuts, corrupt police, and such other ills. Their leaders practice the Washington Consensus, and the people have grossly suffered as a result, much as this is rarely highlighted by the Western Media.
Again ,where do you get your facts from ,according to transparency International(2008),Nigeria is  121 on corruption index ,while india is 85 ,in addition to this India has probably one of the least corrupt electoral systems in the world considering its size(over 1 billion people)
Forget this ‘Washington consensus’ brouhaha, politicians do all they can to get re-elected,yes some are aligned with America, but some aren’t and many don’t really have a clue. . .so stop brandishing ‘al lpoliticians ‘ together.
Mind you India is much more complicated than Nigeria.

ROSSIKE:
China? I'm really glad you mentioned China. First of all China has one thing Africa lacks, that is a unified centralised administration. China's population is twice that of Africa's, yet they have ONE central govt while Africa has 57!
partially correct ,but not entirely. . . the advantage China has is not as much of ‘centralised administration’ as language and ethnic group. China is 90%  Han Chinese,so things get done faster, how many distinct ethnic groups are in Nigeria alone, talkless of Africa?
Also china has a well documented civilisation, culture ,traditions etc. . . . but more  impotantly they had a selfless leader in chairman Mao, wch if you read my previous posts is just what we never had.
I  make bold to say that IBB & OBJ together could have put us on the right track, but chose not to due to their own selfish motivations
ROSSIKE:
Take Zimbabwe for example. Zimbabwe is one of the richest places on earth in terms of natural resources, but a country like Britain, WITH NO RESOURCES, can impose ''economic sanctions'' on Zimbabwe for the ''sin'' of Zimbabwe insisting that her land belongs to the people and not to a a tiny group of white settlers from Europe!

How do you think that is possible?

It is because African states are fragmented. Not unified. Lacking a central authority, it is very easy for foreign powers to play us off against one another. And isolate individual segments of the continent from international commerce. It's really that simple.
You are mixing up issues. . .  .how can Mugabe qualify as a reasonable person? huh People that follow Zim politics will tell you,Bob (Mugabe) knew his time was up in 1998 and resorted to taking white-owned farms to induce/reward  his militant party faithful, now tell me ,if indeed he had the genuine interests of his country at heart, why would he do such? Those are the kind of leaders we have in Africa, no use blaming Britain. Anybody can impose anything on anybody. .  .afterall Nigeria led the boycott of commonwealth games in 1986 leading to significant commercial losses for the hosts. . . .so also China can impose sanctions on countries and we can ban british airways leading to drop in tax revenues to the UK govt. . . so  put the focus on the source – MUGABE !

ROSSIKE:
This is why the mantra AFRICA UNITE, is not just an empty chant worthy of derision, but an ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL COUNTERMAND to the vast, ancient, international CONSPIRACY to divide and plunder the continent.
I have told you to stop listening to Obama. He is an imperialist front-man with not the slightest interest in African development.
What Obama did not tell you about South Korea is that unlike Kenya, South Korea, from the 1950s, received billions of dollars in annual western industrial investment (remember the Vietnam/Botswana example), and virtually unrestricted access to western markets for her finished goods, of the type Kenya can only dream of.
I’m not listening ONLY to Obama. .  .I observe all leaders around the world. . . reasonable and unreasonable.

African can’t unite ,until truth reigns. . . .corruption is completely eradicated,if not its going to be the same old story. i've been to kenya a number of times their currency is stronger than our oil backed naira, their tourism industry compares favorably with our own economy interms of real GDP,a significant part of this has been lost to riots after the last election. . . .is that Obama's fault too? angry

Why didn’t Arap Moi go for western financial aid too ?

Again focus on Africa’s wicked & inept leaders not the Americans

This is the sort of dismissive NAIVETY I keep talking about - an inability to see the filial linkage between social/economic collapse on the home front and the alignment of our ''pro-western'' ruling classes to an international system geared to rendering Africa a permanent source of raw materials as opposed to a competitive industrial force. You cannot treat this situation in any other way but holistically. The very same ruling class forces who submitted to the Washington Consensus (the philosophy which holds inter alia, that developing nations must cut public spending, cut import controls, privatize social services like education and health, ''liberalise'' their trade by opening their markets to western imports wholesale, devalue their currency, and ban subsidies for small farmers etc etc), are the SAME forces rendering the country unable to substantially increase her power generation ability to anything more than subsistence level.
Until you make these linkages, you will forever be in a spin as to ''why'' ''our leaders'' ''cannot'' increase power supply, or ''refuse'' to seriously invest in rail transport, ''refuse'' to seriously invest in public education, ''allow'' corruption to persist, ''neglect'' our major roads, and are ''unable'' to raise industrial productivity.
Until Nigerians begin to ask of intending national leaders this core question ie:
''Where do you stand with regard to the Washington Consensus?''

we, the majority will continue to run from pillar to post, clueless pawns in an international game whose rules, raison detre, and modus operandi, are utterly alien to us, with the likes of Abati and other pro western ''columnists'' tightening the blindfolds on our collective face.
You are the one being naive my friend . . .is it the same conspiracy that has gotten Botswana into the league of serious nations or that has powered Brazil,India & China ,yes china into international reckoning??

As Obama pointed out South korea had a lower GDP than Kenya when he was born, but today you can't even compare the 2. . . . the simple reason is that some responsible peeople whether democratic or not made up their minds to sacrifice for their country while some others don't. . . .your assertions seems to want to confirm that black people are less intelligent. . . or is that your point?

Or is it America's fault that you spend billions to fix electricity w/out any success or that you import petrol while exporting crude oil? huh

The question is why Africa?. . . nobody's going to bring your country down(or make you a pawn) if you don't let them. . .blaming the west for all your problems is just that . . . NAIVE tongue

The poster has a point. . . but like all such issues its usually much more complicated than that. .

Is America's planned 'domination' the reason we don't have electricity? Or is that the cause of the rampant corruption or inept police?

Lets stop deceiving ourselves. . . .there's always one conspiracy theory or the other out there. . .the fact remains that PDP alone if they are really serious about these things have the power to change things. . .don't waste time thinking aboout conspiracies. . . .
