EmekaNaija:There are innumerable countries in the world with steady electricity but high unemployment.South Africa has fairly steady electricity but even the Govt's own figures,said to underestimate the problem,shows that the unemployment rate is 25%. Even in Europe,countries like Belgium and Poland have high unemployment.The Eastern part of Germany has high unemployment . . . . . .you think they don't have electricity? The solution to unemployment is quicker economic growth.To the extent that infrastructure like electricity fosters economic growth,it is helpful,but singling out electricity as the elixir to our problem is ridiculous. |

Manchester United have agreed to sign 24-year-old Angolan forward Manucho. The striker, who has been on trial at the club, will join from Angolan side Petro Athletico on a three-year deal. "We have had Manucho here for a three-week trial and have been impressed enough to offer him a contract," said boss Sir Alex Ferguson. "He is a tall, agile, quick forward and through contacts that Carlos (Queiroz) has, was brought to our attention around six months ago." Manucho, whose real name is Mateus Alberto Contreiras Goncalves, arrives at Old Trafford in January subject to a work permit. He joins Carlos Tevez, Wayne Rooney, Louis Saha and Dong Fangzhou in United's striking department. Ferguson has ruled out another move to tempt Swedish striker Henrik Larsson back to Old Trafford. The 36-year-old Swede scored three goals in 13 games during a successful three-month loan 12 months ago and resisted the chance to stay longer, keeping to his promise of returning to home-town club Helsingborgs. "Henrik promised his family back then he would go home," Ferguson added. "He honoured it, and we honoured it. It would be an interesting one, obviously - but I don't think so. "At this time of year, it is always difficult to get the players you would like to get. "You look at the criteria of playing in European football. That is not easy." http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/7156290.stm |
@Jackal They won't win the League and they won't win the UCL.That is for sure.It is a question of whether they will win the FA Cup and or League Cup. Jose's dismissal for Chelski has thrown a spanner in the works.If he was still there,Chelski would have been a better side.That is why you have to wait for the event to draw closer.Who knows what may happen to Carlo Ancellotti between now and February? |
@Akola How do you change the title of the topic? Never mind.I thought it didn't work. |
@Akola You can't predict anything until the game comes close.Maybe a few days to the game,I can say with certainty who I think can win.Injuries can be crucial,same goes for form. Last season,I got my prediction for Valencia/Chelsea wrong Also tipped Chelski for the title though. Every other prediction came to pass,including Milan for the UCL.In fact,for the World Cup,I seemed to be the only one who came out and singled out Italy.I be true Prophet I think am excellent when it come to Gooners.My initial tip before the season was 3rd place in the League and I stand by it ![]() |
@Akola Thanks ![]() |
Whatever you say about Putin,the man is obviously a "sharp" guy: An unprecedented battle is taking place inside the Kremlin in advance of Vladimir Putin's departure from office, the Guardian has learned, with claims that the president presides over a secret multibillion-dollar fortune. Rival clans inside the Kremlin are embroiled in a struggle for the control of assets as Putin prepares to transfer power to his hand-picked successor, Dmitry Medvedev, in May, well-placed political observers and other sources have revealed. At stake are billions of dollars in assets belonging to Russian state-run corporations. Additionally, details of Putin's own personal fortune, reportedly hidden in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, are being discussed for the first time. The claims over the president's assets surfaced last month when the Russian political expert Stanislav Belkovsky gave an interview to the German newspaper Die Welt. They have since been repeated in the Washington Post and the Moscow Times, with speculation over the fortune appearing on the internet. Citing sources inside the president's administration, Belkovsky claims that after eight years in power Putin has secretly accumulated more than $40bn (£20bn). The sum would make him Russia's - and Europe's - richest man. http://www.guardian.co.uk/russia/article/0,,2230924,00.html Many Russians are busy doing menial labor in the West and the President seems to be lining up his pockets.Anyway,Gorbachev and Yeltsin did line up theirs,so I guess it is the norm. |
Akolawole:This is why he has never been successful in Europe .He keeps miscalculating.Only once has he crossed the Q/F stage of the UCL. Why are many Chelski fans confident of defeating Olympiakos?You guys should go and watch their away games at Madrid,Bremen and Lazio.You won't be so confident after. |
Sevilla met Arsenal a few weeks after Nunez's death and Sevilla were struggling then.If Arsenal can't finish ahead of a mid-table Spanish side,I wonder why they think they can win the UCL. The Carling Cup is their best opportunity for a trophy and if they keep fielding their younger players.They won't win it. The League and the UCL are out of touch,maybe they can do something in the FA Cup. They face a strong chance of winning nothing for the 3rd season in succession . |
sage:They also need Pirlo and Gattuso.Pirlo for his creativity and Gattuso for his pace and work rate in midfield sage:He is watching the UEFA Cup draw They are facing mighty Aberdeen ![]() |
Milan have been awesome in the Champions League,apart from the Celtic game.The more I think of it,the more I lean towards a Milan easy victory.They were brilliant against Shaktar. They lost yesterday against Catania.Lets see how they fare in the Milan derby.This is the only game in Serie A where I cheer Milan-Inter v Milan ![]() |
Arsenal are going nowhere ultimately.2006 was Wenger's best chance . Where are all those Gayners who claimed they don't need to finish 1st? By the time the game with Milan will be played,Arsenal's hopes of winning the EPL would have started receding. . . . . .that more than anything makes me thin they have a good chance.Still think Milan are favorites but this is the worst Ancellotti Milan side I have ever seen. |
@Jackal I have growing confidence that Arsenal are facing another trophyless season.Their best chance of a trophy remains the Carling Cup How many Arsenal fans expected to finish behind Sevilla in the group stages? |
@Jackal I am an auxiliary Milan fan for the next 3 months.I know Arsenal are not winning it even if they make it to the final and face Fernabache but they could shock Milan.Anyway,the 2nd round is Arsenal's normal level. Its Liverpool's draw that pleased me the most.Inter's 2nd 11 will make the top 4 of the EPL.Its just that Inter are a poor cup side.Mancini is an idiot but I hope he doesn't screw up this one. |
@sage I hate Arsenal with a passion but have a sneaky feeling they can win this one.This Milan side doesn't impress me but Ancellotti has a way of preparing the team to peak in the 2nd half of the season.Arsenal have already peaked,Milan haven't even started. I hope with all the speculation surrounding Ancellotti,his boys play for him but I think this "padding up" of his reputation by only competing in the UCL will backfire spectacularly this season and I have a feeling this will be the stage they fall off. Olympiakos can knock out Chelski.Anybody that underates them hasn't seen them much.I watched 4 of their UCL games and they are very good.Chelski fans are in for surprise if they think they are walkovers. What can I say about Liverpool? I am so happy! Would have preferred Inter v Arsenal but this is the next best thing |
@chuckdee4 Olympiakos would have been tougher.I wouldn't want to meet Celtic either.Lyon are a good side at the knockout stage,anything can happen.On paper,United are better,I would rate Lyon on the same level as AS Roma.However,they have some quality players. We got the best draw IMO,Chelski have the next best draw.Liverpool have the worst draw.This Inter are just damn too good and they are the best side in Europe by far.That doesn't mean they would win the UCL,Mancini has a way of screwing things up,but they are one hell of a side. I was hoping to get Schalke or Fernabache |
None of the English sides have an easy draw. . . .I guess there is nothing like an easy draw at this stage. I have seen Olympiakos play and I have been very impressed.I consider them stronger than Lyon.They went to Bremen and Lazio and defeated them,they were close to beating Madrid at the Bernabeau even though they played with 10 for large parts of the game.Its a tough one to call. Lyon are also a very good side.They started poorly this season,probably due to Alain Perrin's problems with the Lyon players,in particlular,he changed formation from their favored 4-3-3 to 4-4-2.Since he reverted to the former,they are back to their old self.They have quality in Benzema,Juninho and a rejuvenated Govou.If Utd are going to win the UCL,these are the kind of teams that shouldn't trouble them too much.I would rate Lyon at the level of AS Roma,slightly below them. Arsenal have a great opportunity to knock out the worst Milan side I have seen since Ancelotti took over.I was hoping Arsenal get either Barca or Inter.I would rate Arsenal as slight favorites for this one. |
@Dayokanu Who are Bayern meeting?I didn't see them in the draw.What happened? ![]() |
Inter v Liverpool AC Milan v Arsenal Lyon v Man Utd Real v Roma Seville v Fernabache Barca v Celtic Porto v Schalke Olympiakos v Chelsea |
Quote from Giles Smith 'You've got to love Arsenal, haven't you? Partly because the papers and the pundits are always telling you to. Beautiful side. Lovely football. Play the game the way it's meant to be played. Can't do it any other way. It's just not in their make-up, and so on. Good news stories pour out of the club on a daily basis. Did you know that the football played at the Emirates actually reduces global warming? It's fantastic news and not only for the club's supporters, but for people all over the world. And not just people. Endangered species, too, including the giant panda and the Rwandan mountain gorilla, support Arsenal and wish them success. Arsène Wenger? A saintly figure, clearly. And no money behind him at all, you know. Not a penny. When Arsène needs a new player, he has to save up bottle tops or grow one in his garden. Or, if not his garden, then the garden belonging to the youth department of another club in France.' http://www.chelseafc.com/page/Columnists/0,,10268~1194259,00.html I have to explain how I ended up at the Chelski site,never been there before,honest!Just say an excerpt of the article in the Guardian located it there.Ordinarily,I won't be found in a Chelski site and this is my last time. . . . . unless something crops up again . |

Robin Van Pervy in his new disguise!
|
@Debo What about when Ashley Cole,still a Gayner,stuck a vibrating phone up his ar*e and had a gay party with 2 others? What about the gay trysts of Sol Campbell while on Gayner's books? Talking about sex-starved. . . . .what was Robin Van Pervy doing in a room with a girl and 4 other men? Why were so man y men seeking to share one girl? Was there a "pussy scarcity" in Holland at the time? ![]() |
@Debo I know Gayners must abide by the Book,Cap 1 Verse 2-but if you add up the transfer fees,its more than that of the Blackburn team. They are vastly more experienced and our year to year transfer budgets are the lowest in the top 4. . . CoolThis would be impressive if you didn't finish as the lowest of the top 4 in 2 consecutive seasons If you subtract the wage differences compared to Liverpool over the past 2 seasons,the picture is even more mixed. I guess Gayners have to hang on to something.Lastly,check out the title of this thread-we are the Champions and are getting our money's worth.9 league titles in 15 seasons isn't bad When Fergie came,we hadn't won the league in 2 decades and were in the relegation places.We win the trophies that matter,at least in the domestic competitions-you win trophies that don exist-The We beat Blackburn with young inexperienced players even though our squad cost more than theirs Cup That is what grates up with Gooners,fans talk about what they actually won-look at the argument with Bayern nutter,Dayokanu-you guys bleat endlessly about "youth,inexperience,small transfer budget,challenging for the title"-Win trophies and then you can talk ![]() |
I will soon be wielding my powers as the Moderator of the Sports threads . On second thoughts,as long all the BS can be kept on this thread,I am cool with it ![]() |
@Debo What about the European Winners Cup which you won in 1994? Isn't that a major trophy,much better than all the FA Cups you have been winning. . . . at least,its better than the Emirates Cup which purportedly made it to the Wikipedia profile of The Gas Boy! ![]() |
Blackburn: Friedel (free), Reid £2.5, Samba (free), Nelsen (free), Warnock (£1.5m) Bentley £4m, Savage £3m, Dunn £2.2m Pedersen £2.5m, Santa Cruz (free), Derbyshire (youth product)- total £15.7mDamn!!!!!!That was mean. . . . it is written in the UnHoly Book, Arsene's Letter to the Pedophiles,Cap 1 verse 2-"Verily,verily ,I say unto you,Arsenal's transfer budget is lower than that of Enyimba. . . . . . . this article of faith must be swallowed blindly by all true believers,whosoever rejects this,rejects me and shall not enter the Kingdom of pre-pubescent boys " For you to explode this article of faith amongst Gayners is heartless.They are taught to believe this and recite it ad infinitum ![]() |
@Jackal Gooners have to invent trophies to win it these days The EPL Xmas Special is out.Last season,they won the "Sexy Football Tournament" Wenger's medals cabinet must be piling up,heard he sent for a carpenter to add more space.Wenger is a genius!7 years preceding his takeover-Arsenal won 2 league titles-7 years after his take over-Arsenal won 2 league titles-Result: He is the best manager ever! How does he do it?Keep pulling a wool over 'em Gayners eyes! He now has them congratulating themselves over finishing 4th and making it to the final of the Carling Cup.The man is the Messiah |
debosky:Hooray! So we are supposed to be impressed that you "are actually challenging for the league this year"? So Mancs didn't you give you grief last season when you were "actually challenging for the 4th place Championship"? Vieira:Are you not counting finishing runners up in the Carling Cup? If you can count 2nd place,we may as well count 1st place |
@McKren a.k.a Robert Ford is a historian Fatuous comparisons are your stock in trade.Putin murdered one or two dead people?Yes,the 100,000 dead in Chechnya,Russia are just "one or two" dead people.Who needs tens of thousands of innocent brown skinned Russians?Ingushetia is absolutely fantastic,maybe you should visit it instead of hiding out in the US and heaping praise on a nation agush with the blood of innocent Russia Muslims. Putin will leave a better economy than he met it?Well,Nostradamus,Putin still has more years in power with the impending amendment of the constitution and his proposed occupation of the PM position.So,Mr Sorcerer,unless you know how the economy will be whenever Putin leaves power,your statement is absurd. |
EmekaNaija:If you have always been familiar with Russian politics,why the above? Russians love Putin?Germans loved Hitler,Soviets loved Stalin,Zimbabwean loved Mugabe,e.t.c Apart from the obvious question of how you know Russians love Putin.From the media?The same media you dismiss when they tell you about 100,000 dead in Chechnya,Boris Nemtsov and Kasparov's arrests. You have failed to address the key issue-how is Putin responsible for Russia economic progress? Comparing Russia with Nigeria is the quintessential apples to oranges comparison.The best measure is a comparison with all the other major oil exporters . . . . . . . . .unless they all have "great leaders",maybe the economic vigour they are experiencing transcends the simplistic attribution of credit to the head of state.For God's sake,even the Nigerian economy has picked up compared to the Abacha years. |
