In International Law,statehood is a matter of law and fact.Somaliland is de facto a state but a province of Somalia de jure,same goes for Kurdistan,Iraq .

1. Why is it so difficult for Israel to return to the pre-1967 borders?

Resolution 242 requires Israel only to withdraw as part of a peace agreement with the Arabs in which the Arabs have recognised Israel's right to exist.Since Israel has no unilateral obligation to withdraw,it won't do so.

Prior to 1967,Israel had no peace from the Arabs so its subsequent occupation of land in 1967 cannot be used as justification for Arab violence.What is the point of withdrawal if Isreal gets nothing in return?

2. Will returning to the pre-1967 borders threaten the existence of Israel?

Yes,the Golan Heights and West Bank are of key strategic military value.They gave the Arab forces an advantage because of their topography an location.

3. Will it cause more problems for Israel? How?

For the above mentioned reasons.For instance,Syrian artillery regiments used to rain down shells on the Israeli civilian populace from the Golan Heights.Withdrawing without concessions on the other side,as required by Resolution 242,will be harmful to Israel just as we saw in Gaza.

4. Won't it create more goodwill for Israel? Why not?

Tibetans have a lot of goodwill but goodwill doesn't keep a people secure.Its frankly a stupid question.

5. Does Israel plan to hold on to the West Bank indefinitely?

Everybody,except the hopelessly ignorant,knows Israel doesn't plan to hold W.Bank indefinitely

The elections were neither free or fair for parties outside of Hamas or Fatah.Secular parties were regularly intimidated by Hamas.Having said that,part of democratic principles is the freedom to deal or not deal with certain political entities.If the West doesn't want to deal with Hamas,its their entitlement

10. Where do we draw the line as to what Israel can do and can't do in the name of "right to defend itself"? Israel has committed the following illegal/immoral actions:

There are only two reasons why Jews can't show their true color of violence:
1. They try not act violently as they would love to, so as to salvage some of the sympathy due to the Holocaust (a potential myth)
2. As far as numbers go, they are inconsequential.

1.The Jews were not violent prior to the Holocaust

2.The Jews used to be same in number as the Arabs but yet the Arabs managed to kill tens of millions.Even Hutus,Serbs et al who are fewer than Jews have killed more people.

So the Arabs were unhappy, so they disregarded a UN Resolution recognising Israel and after their military adventure ,amidst wild boasts of wiping out all Jews,failed so remarkably,they now want Israel to abide by UN Resolutions,which same Resolution they rejected ab initio.

That's not how life works.You bear the consequences of your action.If they had simply taken what they had been given by the UN,they won't be here moaning about their present position.

Knowing you,there will be no point in going into details about the substance of Resolution 242 which does not require Israel to pull out unilaterally.
