BusinessDangote Foundation Donates N50m To Victims Of Ife Crisis by information1(op): 1:13pm On Jul 11, 2017
Reprieve has come the way of 220 victims of the latest tragedy in Ile-Ife, Osun State, as the Dangote Foundation yesterday donated a amount of N50 million to them to cover part of the losses experienced while in the mayhem.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, observed the distribution of cheques to the victims at the palace of the Ooni yesterday.

Speaking at the occasion, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Foundation, Mrs. Zuera Yusuff, said the foundation chose to donate the fund so as to cut down the pain of the victims and give them the control to continue to live their normal lives after the unfortunate incident.

Yusuff, who depicted the chairman of the Dangote Group at the event, recalled that the foundation has been active and intervening in similar crises across the country.

She explained that the presence of the two prominent royal fathers would provide necessary royal blessing and further help to cement cordial relationship among all the ethnic groups living the ancient city of Ile-Ife.

In his speech, the Emir of Kano said the north did not make any public statement concerning the crisis because the Ooni briefed them on steps he and others were taking to resolve the crisis, adding that they have no reason to doubt Ooni’s sincerity.

He said the Hausas living in Ife have become indigenes of the town and urged all ethnic groups to be tolerant of one another and to continue to live together in peace.

CrimeFb User Recounts How He Was Almost Lynched After Being Mistaken For Badoo Guys by information1(op):
Facebook user Akinrinlade Ayodeji, has in an extensive post detailed his experience as almost being lynched in Ikorodu for being a susspected member of Badoo.

In the article titled: ‘Ikorodu’s Badoo Brouhaha: My story’ said it was clear that many residents are being wrongly accused and molested because of mistaken identities. Ayodeji stated he had came back home from work at about 5.21 pm when he chose to take a nap.
On waking up around 7.39 pm it dawned on him that he ought to fetch some water for his house. “Then I quickly decided to go get some water at a nearby tank, I was with my hands free on, I was just hearing “hey hey! what are you coming here to do at this time”?, it has become dangerous to move around Ikrorodu after 7 pm.

I replied the questionnaire; “sorry sir, I am actually here to fetch some water”, before I could finished clearing up myself, I saw a very furious man and decided to just turn back ‘jejely’ to my house, before i could take three steps forward, i just felt a big and several bang on my face through the back,” Ayodeji exclaimed.

He however mentioned that at some point people began to gather and they were asking what happened in Yoruba language. “They all apologized after several slaps and molestation initially, then I just jejely carried my gallon that someone else has helped filled, obviously out of pity then walked towards my house, entered my room, put off my already tattered cloth, sat down and started imagining what just happened, hoping it was just a dream, behold! it wasn’t, it was REAL ‘mehn’!. Some minutes later while i was still busy pondering on what just happened, I heard some elderly voices at my entrance, they knocked and i saw four elderly men (obviously the landlords of the area) alongside the man that ignorantly dealt with me and one of my neighbours (making six men).

“They all said they were sorry for the ugly incident, with the man that punished me particularly holding me tight just to show his level of SORRY state, I almost shed tears at that point, but had to be a man. I told them they should just take things easy, that two wrongs can never make a RIGHT. That I am ok now. But trust me the beating was not here ooo. Come and see slaps! Do I blame them? No! But people should apply wisdom. That was how one of our friends too was lynched to death last Sunday at Odongunyan but glory be to God mine was not beyond control,” he concluded.

Travel2 Siblings On Holiday From Cotonou Goes Missing In Lagos by information1(op): 6:22pm On Jul 04, 2017
Two siblings, Ridwan Adeleke, 10, and sister, 8-year old Nimota Adeleke, has caused panic in Wera town, Eyita, Ikorodu, Lagos State, as the kids who live in Cotonou, Benin Republic with their parents, were said to be on holiday in Nigeria, but have now gone missing.
Reports have it that both pupils were born in Cotonou and could only speak French and Egun languages.

Their mother, Fatimoh Adeleke, had brought them to her elder sister in Mushin, Lagos, about two weeks ago, while she returned to Cotonou.

After spending a week in Mushin, the sister, identified simply as Iya Saheed, took them to another younger sister, Esther Morufu, on Odubegu Street, Wera town. Our correspondent gathered that the pupils were playing on the premises of Morufu’s house on Saturday at about 5pm, while she was in the bathroom.

After taking her bath, Morufu reportedly discovered that the siblings were no longer on the premises and started making enquiries about their whereabouts from her tenants.

One of the tenants, who did not want his name in print, said other residents joined the woman to search for the children, while the case was reported at the Owutu, Sagamu Road, Igbogbo and Ipakodo police divisions.

He said, “That evening, the landlady knocked on my door and asked whether I sent the children on an errand. I told her that I didn’t know their whereabouts.

“About an hour later, other tenants raised the alarm that the landlady had fainted because she could not find the children. She was revived and everybody went out to search for the children.

“We reported at four police stations. The police promised to get back to us when they get any information on them. The children don’t understand Yoruba.”

The tenant said several parks around Ikorodu were visited on Saturday and Sunday in search of the siblings, adding that their parents had been informed about the incident.

Morufu told PUNCH Metro that in the course of the search, a resident told her that he saw the siblings walking along the street and chatting with each other.

She said, “They just finished eating that day. I went to take a bath while they went outside to get fresh air because there was no electricity. When I was done, I checked outside, but I did not see them.

“Somebody later told me that he saw them. He said he thought they were sent on an errand. They had been to Lagos before, but they were very young then.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that the mother, Fatimoh, a native of Ibadan, Oyo State, returned from Cotonou on Sunday, to join in the search.

She told our correspondent that the children were supposed to resume school in August.

Fatimoh said, “They are on holiday. I brought them to Lagos from Cotonou two weeks ago to spend part of the holiday with my sisters in Mushin and Ikorodu. They spent a week in Mushin and came to Ikorodu on Friday, June 23 to celebrate Eid-el-fitr.

“We are confused now; we have not heard anything about them since they went missing. We have gone to many places to look for them.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, promised to get back to our correspondent.

EducationMarry Educated Women For Better Life – University Dean Advises Men by information1(op): 9:10am On Jun 29, 2017
A female professor in Zamfara state, Prof. Bilkisu Shinkafi, has called on men to marry educated women so as to check social vices in the society.

Prof. Shinkafi made the call on Tuesday, in Gusau, at a Town Hall meeting prepared by the Zamfara Circle, an NGO

The Dean of the Faculty of Science at the Federal University, Gusau, mentioned that many of the vices displayed by youths in the state were performed by children of illiterate mothers who failed to discover ways to train their children.

She declared that marrying an educated woman would eradicate thuggery, illness, illiteracy, poverty and hunger from the society “as such mothers will ensure that their children go to school to become better citizens of the society”.
She also described that the problem of maternal, neonatal and infant mortality would be notably addressed thereby ensuring a better society.

Guest Speaker of the occasion that is also the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Abdullahi Shinkafi, asserted the state had been going backwards in the past years.
He called for a collaboration between the government as well as the citizens to address the problems facing the statend.

The SSG, who stated the state government’s willingness towards such partnership, called on NGOs in the state organizations to help out with coordinating activities of various groups in the communities, especially youths, for progress.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of the circle, Mallam Gazali Shehu said the forum was aimed at creating a platform where the people would come together to discuss the vast potentials of the state and how to harness them for development.

Born in Ibiono Ibom in what is now Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria on the 18th of November, 1925, Effiong

He became the Chief of General Staff of Biafra under the Head of State Odumegwu but when he fled to Ivory Coast, Effiong had to become the acting Head of State of Biafra on the 8th of January 1970 and on the 12th of January, he announced surrender. On the 15th of January, 1970 at the Dodan Barracksin Lagos, with the Nigerian military head of state Yakubu Gowon present, he read what is now one of the most famous speechesin Nigerian history, it went thus:

“I, Major-General Phillip Efiong, Of icer Administering the Government of the Republic of Biafra, now wish to make the following declaration: That we af irm that we are loyal Nigerian citizens and accept the authority of the Federal Military Government of Nigeria. That we accept the existing administrative
and political structure of the Federation of Nigeria. That any future constitutional arrangement will be worked out by representatives of the people of Nigeria. That the Republic of Biafra hereby ceases to exist….I am convinced now that a stop must be put to the bloodshed which is going on as a result of the war. I am also convinced that the suf ering of our people must be brought to an immediate end.”

On the surrender, Nnaemeka L Aneke wrote:

“General Efiong’s handling of Biafra’s surrender is one of the most tactical and devoted maneuvers ever seen on the Nigerian scene. Those who do not appreciate the depth of it may not have appreciated what was atstake as Biafra capitulated.” In 1996, Effiong repeated he had no regrets saying: I have no regrets whatsoever of my involvement in Biafra or the role I played. The war deprived me of my property, dignity, my name. Yet, I saved so many souls on both sides and by this, I mean Biafra and Nigeria. . . .I felt that I played a role which has kept this country united till
today. . . .At the end of it all when I saw they (Biafran soldiers) could no longer continue and Ojukwu had fled, I did what was ideal after wide consultation . . . On the 6th of November, 2003, he died in Aba, Abia State, two weeksto his 78th birthday. On the 12th of January 1970, Biafra was reintegrated into the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Seven years after achieving independence, Nigeria was plunged into a devastating conflict, a cruel war
that shocked the world and claimed millions of African lives. Few conflicts compare in scale of sheer
devastation. The battle to the death was between the Federal Republic of Nigeria along with the Republic of
Nigeria, a secessionist state in the southeastern portion of the new nation.
Republic of Biafra had a head of state who was also the President and in its existence, Biafra had 2 presidents and they are as follows:

1. CHUKWUEMEKA ODUMEGWU OJUWKU: He was President from the unilateral declaration of
independence from Nigeria and served in that office from the 30th of May 1967 to the 8th of January 1970 when he fled to Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire) at the end of the Nigerian Civil War. After he fled into exile, a second president took over the reins of Biafra. He died on the 26

PoliticsNigeria To Become World’s 3rd Most Populous Country In 2050 by information1(op): 10:35pm On Jun 21, 2017
Nigeria has been projected to be the world’s third most populous country by the year 2050, UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs reports.

The report, titled ‘World Population Prospects: The 2017 Revision’, said with such development, Nigeria would overtake the United States in terms of population just as world population would reach 9.8 billion people.

The report said

“by 2050, the third most populous country will be Nigeria, which currently ranks seventh, and which is poised to replace the United States.
“Among the 10 largest countries of the world, one is in Africa (Nigeria).
“Amongst these, Nigeria’s population, currently the seventh largest in the world, is growing the most rapidly.
“Consequently, the population of Nigeria is projected to surpass that of the United States shortly before 2050, at which point it would become the third largest country in the world.
“In 2050, the populations in six of the 10 largest countries are expected to exceed 300 million: China, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and United States of America (in alphabetical order).
“Africa, which has the youngest age distribution of any region, is projected to experience a rapid ageing of its population, the report noted.
“Although the African population will remain relatively young for several more decades, the percentage of its population aged 60 or over is expected to rise from five per cent in 2017 to around nine per cent in 2050, and then to nearly 20 per cent by the end of the century.”

In addition, the birth rates in African countries are likely to “at least double” by 2050, according to the report.

PoliticsBaby Born On Plane Gets Free Travel For Life by information1(op): 10:20pm On Jun 19, 2017
An Indian woman gave birth to a baby boy on an international commercial flight as it flew at 35,000 feet, the airline said on Monday.

The unnamed woman, in her 20s, went into premature labour on Sunday’s Jet Airways flight between Damman in Saudi Arabia and Kochi in the southern Indian state of Kerala.

“The guest delivered a baby boy at 35,000 feet,” Jet Airways said in a statement, adding that a paramedic on board and airline staff helped with the delivery.

The Boeing 737 flight, which had 162 passengers on board, was diverted to Mumbai where the woman and her newborn were rushed to a hospital near the airport.

An official at Mumbai’s Holy Spirit hospital told AFP on Monday that both the mother and baby boy were doing well.

The woman was believed to have been around 32 weeks pregnant when she gave birth.

Jet Airways said it was the first time a baby had been born on one of its flights and that it had given him free travel for life on the airline.

In August last year a woman gave birth on a flight from the United Arab Emirates to the Philippines.

The plane made an emergency landing in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad so the mother and newborn could receive medical attention before continuing their journey to Manila.

CrimeWorker Kills Chinese Boss In Lagos by information1(op): 8:57am On Jun 19, 2017
A worker at Green World, a drug producing firm on Akinola Cole Estate, Adeniyi Jones, Ikeja, Lagos State, allegedly killed his Chinese boss, Alice Xu.

It was said that the suspect, 28-year-old Okechukwu Amos, a casual worker, sneaked into Xu’s apartment while she was asleep and covered her nose with a cloth until she suffocated.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident happened around 8pm on Friday at the firm, which the 26-year-old Chinese woman also used as a residence.
It was gathered that the suspect had complained that the boss usually harassed him, and decided to “deal with her” that day.

Not done, Amos reportedly ransacked the apartment and allegedly stole about N800,000 and $2,000, which belonged to the deceased.

To evade arrest at the estate gate, which is manned by private guards and two policemen, Amos disguised as a mentally-derailed person.

Luck, however, ran out on him.

A security guard, who spoke to PUNCH Metro on condition of anonymity, said the suspect almost escaped from the gate, but he unearthed his identity and alerted one of the policemen.

He said,

“I was at the security post around 9pm that day when I saw a man half-naked. He walked towards the gate bare-footed. He was holding a pair of slippers and carrying a load wrapped with a shirt on his head.
“I initially took the man for a mad person, but after a closer look, I discovered that he is Ikechukwu (Amos). I asked him what was wrong and why he was dressed like that. He said he was angry and that he was quitting his job at the the company. I asked if the person that brought him to the company was aware, he said no.
“I volunteered to call the person, but he refused. I requested to know the content of the bag with him, he was reluctant.

“That was when I became suspicious and called a policeman, who was at the gate with me. He interrogated him and forced him to open the bag. The bag contained a lot of cash. He led the policeman to the company, where we found the woman dead.”

The guard said Amos was handed over to the police at the MAN Centre division.

A police source said the suspect in his statement stated that he had endured frequent harassment by the woman and decided to punish her.

The source said,

“He was employed recently by the woman through somebody and he worked at the supply department. He alleged that the woman had been very insulting and disrespecting to him over a period of time.
“He gained access into her apartment when she had slept and tied her up. He covered her mouth and nose and the woman died because she could not breathe properly. He said he only wanted to punish her and didn’t mean to kill her. Sums of N800,000 and $2,000 belonging to the woman were recovered from him.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.

PoliticsI Paid $1.2m To Kidnap Kingpin Evans: James Uduji by information1(op): 8:25am On Jun 18, 2017
The Chairman of Cometstar Cable Manufacturing Limited was kidnapped by the Evans gang for for 42 days in 2015. And to get his freedom, he paid the gang $1.2m, the highest ransom ever paid by any of Evans victims.

Uduji narrates his traumatic experience to Vanguard.

How he Was Kidnapped

On September, 2015, as I was coming back from my factory in Agbara to my home in Festac, arriving Seventh Avenue, I saw four gun men. They stopped in front of my vehicle and started shooting while I was with my two drivers in my Hilux pickup.
I was sitting at the back, thinking they were policemen. I was wondering why they were shooting and charging at us not knowing that they were kidnappers. In the process, they shot us, me and two of my drivers but luckily, nobody died. I still have a bullet in my body.
By the time I realized they were kidnappers, they dragged me out of my vehicle to their own Lexus 470 Jeep. Inside their Jeep, there were lots of arms and ammunition inside a box. They had another box at the back where they put me in.
Four guys were inside that Jeep, well-armed, even the driver had his own AK-47 riffle. They drove past Festac Link Bridge to Amowu-Odofin, around 4:30pm as if they were going to Okota. Later, they came out to Oshodi -Apapa Expressway. By this time, they had not blindfolded me but they pushed my head down, lying bare on the floor of the car. One of them just held me as I was seriously bleeding. I never knew I would survive this. I couldn’t remember the places they took me to because I was lying down.

After a long journey, they stopped at a particular area, those guys jumped down and another group came on board and zoomed off again.

As we were going, we got to one house, they called the security guard who came and opened the gate, and they brought me out, gathered water, changed their cloths and called one doctor, whether he was quack or not, I do not know.
They told the doctor they had emergency. The doctor came, washed me and treated my wound. That was the first thing they did. Though, when we were about to get to where they wanted to take me to, they blind folded me.

They were administering two injections on me daily. When I asked them the kind of injection they were giving me, they said it was anti tetanus injection and pain reliever. They refused to give me water saying that if you have bullet in your body, you don’t drink water.

The second day, Evans came there with the doctor and said to me that, he came there because of me. Yet, I did not set my eyes on him. Maybe, the person that asked them to kidnap me told them that they should not let me die.

I said this because of the kind of treatment they were giving me or maybe, it could be because of my wound. But, I was seriously bleeding. At a point, they were thinking of exchanging me. They called my brother to come and let me go out and treat myself of the bullet wound.
My elder brother accepted to come but backed out at the end because those people, you never know what they planned. May be their plan was to capture the two of us before they would kill us. It was an ugly situation.
They injected me for seven good days. From that Monday till the next Sunday, every two days, there was a particular guy that came there to treat my wounds, dress it and put the bandage again. After some days, Evans called.

Evans and his Gang’s Modus Operandi

How they operate is that, they keep a hostage keeper, which is someone that would be guiding kidnap victims so that any time their boss wants to call, he would call that person. When he calls the person, the person would bring the phone to the victim and hold the phone for you talk to him.

They were always communicating. They did not maltreat me because of my condition but I heard them maltreating the victim in the other room with hot iron and the person would be crying.

Before they start that, they would go and put on their generator so that their neighbours would not be hearing. That guy was a terror.

His Time in Captivity

They were feeding me with one useless (noodles). I was just managing to eat to keep my life moving. They asked what kind of drugs I was taking but I told them I was not on drugs. I did not make trouble with them but there was a day I tried to escape. I was scared whether all the neighbours were their gang members or not.

Again, even if I would have escaped, I would have been naked because before you go to the bathroom, they take away your boxers. When you finished, you knocked at the door and turned your face to the wall as they gave you your boxer to wear.
They would blind fold you and put you in chains again. Early morning I used to hear siren and I thought, that it was police that were coming to rescue me. At the end nothing would happen. They would go. What were they coming to do there around 4:00 am to 5:00 am? I noticed that five times and I asked myself, “what the police are coming there to do?”.

I also noticed there was a construction site nearby where people were working. One particular day, one boy came in and asked “mummy, who is this uncle?”. I was listening and waited to hear what the woman would say but she did not say anything.

So, that couple that was paraded were there. I was praying every minute of the day, waiting for anything that would happen the next day. It was traumatising . So many things happened. I knew that, nothing would happen to me but they would charge me more money.
You know, I paid $1.2 million. We paid it in three installments. We paid two hundred thousand dollars, eight hundred thousand dollars and another two hundred thousand dollars. He claimed that, the first two hundred dollars we paid had been cancelled because we set them up by inviting security agents to be tracking them. That’s how we were accused and that the payment had been rubbished.
He bargains with the victims, he doesn’t bargain with the families. Whatever he asked for that is what the family would pay. A person that is under chain, what would he say? Anything they asked you to do, you just had to do it because of your life. That was not joke, they meant business.
If you refused to co-operate, they would kill you. I am sure; they have killed some people there. I stayed there for six weeks. I was abducted on the 7th of September and I was released on the 19th of October, 2015.

How He Was Released

After I had finished paying the ransom, they still kept me for another eight days. My people were worried, and I was worried too because I did not know what was going on outside. They had cut off communication with everybody. Immediately, he collected his ransom, he traveled abroad. He goes outside to keep his ill-gotten wealth, which was obvious.
I now asked the hostage keeper, how long it takes them to release a hostage. He said four days, I now asked again, but why am I still here? He then said I should not worry, that the chairman traveled and that I would be released as soon as he returned.

He said that I should see myself as a free man and relax. The man was a greedy man. Of all the money we paid him, he didn’t feed us well. His duty, I observed, was to collect money and drop victims.
When he came back to Nigeria, he came to me where I was detained by his men and said to me that, today, you will go. He ordered his boys to bring all my belongings. My Rolex watch, my bag, my golden ring and my sandals were nowhere to be found. Not to talk of cash because all of them were criminals. All other valuables were gone.
They only brought my cloths, bank cheque books and seals and a polythene bag. And for my sandals, they bought one bathroom slippers for me. Just imagine someone coming back from his office.
Then, he asked me to hold on till the road was free; it was about 5:00 pm.
As I was waiting, he came back and called me, Nnwa which is my title name. Any time he wanted to talk to me he first called me Nnwa. When he saw my wound, he said, I was a lucky man. That, my God is a great God.
He said that, I would live up to hundred years for surviving that gunshot. I asked him why they were shooting us like that. He said in war all was fair. I then asked “you and who were fighting?. Did I have gun with me?”.
Evans now asked who was the person in front of my car. That was when they thought I was a policeman. In fact they would have killed my driver if he were a policeman. When he came down and they asked him, he told them he was just an ordinary driver. That was when they left him.

He advised me to buy a lot of drinks because many people would be coming to sympathize with me. He stressed that people were already waiting for my arrival. He said:
“Any day you are going to do thanksgiving, we are going to be there.” I now asked him, how would I know you will be there? He replied that, I shouldn’t worry; he would come and follow me to thank God. “Nnwa, but your God is great oh”.
All these things he was talking, my mind was not there because I knew he was wicked.
That evening, he brought ten thousand Naira that I should take it. That if, they drop me anywhere, I should use it to enter taxi to my house. Or if I wanted, they could drop me in a nearby hotel so that, I could call my people to come and carry me.
But I told him to just drop my anywhere he wanted. When it became dark everywhere, they took me out of that house and moved me round the city before finally dropping me around Lagos State University (LASU), side in Iyana Oba.

Even to walk was a problem because, I had been in chains for long and all my bones had grown weak. I almost fell down while trying to cross the road because of my wobbling legs. I lost so much energy that, I became weak, lean and tired.
Suya was the first thing I ate after my release from captivity. I called a motorcyclist to take me to any nearby bus stop, which he did. When I turned the other side, I saw one man selling roasted meat (Suya), I went to him and bought the meat for one thousand Naira and started eating.

My action was to soften the ground for me to start asking question that would let me know exactly where I was as by this time I never knew where I was exactly. I asked the man, how I could get to Mile 2, and he said before you get to Mile 2, you first of all get to LASU.

I asked again, how I could I get to LASU, he told me to cross the road to the other side and enter any bus that was going that way. As soon as I entered the bus, I switched on my phones and there was no single credit on my phones except the one we used as a company group. That one doesn’t need credit because we pay once in a month. I now used it to call one of my managers.
Immediately he saw my call, he knew I was out and asked me where I was so that he could come and carry me. I told him to come to LASU, I got there and was waiting for him. He was coming from Agbara axis. While there, I strolled down a bit to buy orange, one man just came to me that I should give him money in spite of my tattered appearance.
I took two thousand out of the ten thousand Evans gave to me and gave to him. I was kind of hiding so that people who knew me before would not notice me until I got home.
When my manager came, he took me straight to the house after that, I went to report officially to the police. Even the commissioner of police came to my house after that.

After that incident, I requested for police protection which I was later provided with. I was so happy when I heard that, the guy has been arrested. I thank the Nigeria police for doing a great job. That shows that, if the police want to work, they could work.

CrimeHow Evans' Kidnap Of A Lagos Pharmacist Led To His Arrest (Photo) by information1(op): 5:47pm On Jun 17, 2017
An abduction carried out by the Evans gang on February 14 this year proved to be a fatal error as the captured businessman, Donatus Dunu, became the gang’s nemesis.

Dunu is a pharmacist and the owner of Maydon Pharmaceutical Company, Ilupeju, Lagos.

He had barely left his office in the evening of 14 February, the lovers day, when he was blocked by a vehicle. Before he knew it, Evans’ gun-wielding men had stepped out of the vehicle and bundled the pharmacist into their vehicle and sped off to No 21, Prophet Asaye Close, New Igando, a Lagos suburb where he was kept for three months.

Evans subsequently demanded the payment of one million euro as ransom. Despite pleas by the family of Dunu to make Evans reduce the ransom, even after N100 million had been paid to him, he was adamant. He insisted on the one million euro or Dunu life.

While looking for the money, Dunu’s wife, who is also a director of the company, staff members organized prayers for the safe return of their boss. One of the workers said: “We did not only pray but engaged in fasting too. Who will not pray and fast if his or her boss was in such condition? It was really traumatic for us.”

Unknown to Dunu’s wife and the workers, the person who gave the information leading to Dunu’s abduction was one of the staff members of the company, identified as Emeka, who was employed about five years ago

At the gang’s den in New Igando, where Dunu was kept, Dunu had given up hope on the possibility of regaining his freedom. But he had a big break in the early hours of Friday, May 12, 2017, while his captors were deep asleep.

Dunu managed to wriggle out of the leg manacles. He was only wearing a pair of short and white singlet. A perimeter fence with broken bottles atop was to become a major obstacle to his escape, but the victim found a way. He clambered atop and jumped into freedom.

It was learnt that when he landed into an adjoining building, he was mistaken for a fleeing robber or cultist. Security guards raised the alarm which attracted neighbours to the scene and it was providence that saved him from being lynched by a mob.

One of the security guards who asked not to be named said: “I just came to my duty post that day when I started hearing the shout of ‘thief! Thief!’ I came out and saw this fair-complexioned man running towards me. I stopped him near that mini- tanker (he pointed at a decrepit stationary tanker). He was wearing only his boxer with his white singlet placed on his shoulder. There was fear in his eyes and he looked sick and traumatised. His body was blood-stained and there were injuries on his legs probably because he had been cuffed on his legs for a long time.

“Some people were unwilling to listen to him and they wanted to take him away. I said no, they should leave him here and instead call the elders of the community. I took him to the front of that Foursquare Church and told him to sit at the entrance of the church. I then asked how much the kidnappers were demanding from him and how much he had paid and he said they were demanding N500m and he had paid about N100m. I was shocked. We then took him to the Igando Divisional Police Station. Later that afternoon, the operatives of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) returned with him to the street, but he was so tired and sick; he did not even come out of the vehicle. They broke into the compound but the kidnappers had escaped. So many things were discovered in the compound, including guns, a white bus and a power bike. I had never seen any power bike on this street before then.”

With the escape of Dunu, he was able to make useful statements to the police about his kidnap. The next day, May 13, SARS operatives in four patrol vans stormed Franzaki Street, Bucknor Estate, off Isheri Osun Road. It was the rented home of one of the workers of Maydon Pharmaceutical, identified as Emeka, a pharmacist. He is from Oguta, Imo State, and in his late 30s or early 40’s; he has a wife and a child, according to the residents, who were rattled by the early morning raid.

Emeka was whisked away from his house by the police. Since then, the residents said he has not returned.

It was on the basis of this breakthrough that the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, four days after Emeka’s arrest on May 16 declared a certain faceless Evans wanted. He said: “We are encouraging Nigerians to blow the whistle on this kidnapper. Whoever blows the whistle will get N30 million rewards as stated by the Inspector General of Police…Evans has been on the wanted list of the Police in Anambra, Edo and Lagos states for years. The suspects arrested have given us valuable information, which the command is working on to ensure that he is apprehended by all means.”

Operatives of the Inspector General of Police’s anti-kidnapping team went into action and with the aid of high tech equipment, they were able to track key members of the kidnap syndicate, rounded them up and then set the stage for the final arrest of Evans. This came last Saturday when Evans was demystified by the police.

Mood at the victim’s firm

At the headquarters of Maydon Pharmaceutical Company Limited at 15 Wilmer Street, Ilupeju, Lagos, the atmosphere was subdued. The workers discussed in low tone. There were several innuendoes about a certain Emeka from Oguta. Both Mr. Donatus Dunu, the chairman of the company, and his wife, the managing director, were not on seat.

However, one of the male workers said they had been warned not to discuss their boss’ harrowing experience with pressmen and that it was only the boss or his wife that can speak on the matter. Pressed further, he described his boss’ escape as miraculous. When shown the picture of the compound where Dunu was kept with the inscription ‘Jesus is alive’, he exclaimed ‘indeed, Jesus is alive!’

PoliticsSanusi Reveals Real Problem With Nigeria by information1(op): 8:48pm On Jun 15, 2017
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has strongly condemned groups that have resorted to ‘hate speech’ along ethnic lines.

The Emir, while condemning ethnicity/tribalism, noted that Nigerians must stop thinking along ethnic lines and embrace the creation called Nigeria.

He gave these charges via a series of posts on Instagram on Wednesday.

According to him, “Fulani. My grandfather was an Emir also fulani my uncle and guardian was also the immediate late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero and therefore I represent all that has been talked about this afternoon.

He said the language of the generation older than him was to use regions to refer to themselves, but that he is a Nigerian.

“My grandfather was a Northerner, I am a Nigerian, he wrote.

“The problem with this country is that in 2009, we speak in the language of 1953. Sir Olaniwun can be forgiven for the way he spoke, but I cannot forgive people of my generation speaking in that language.

“Let us go into this issue because there are so many myths that are being bandied around. Before colonialism, there was nothing like Northern Nigeria, Before the Sokoto Jihad, there was nothing like the Sokoto caliphate.

“The man from Kano regard himself as bakane. The man from Zaria was bazazzage. The man from Katsina was bakatsine. The kingdoms were at war with each other. They were Hausas, they were Muslims, they were killing each other.

“The Yoruba were Ijebu, Owo, Ijesha, Akoko, Egba. When did they become one? When did the North become one? You have the Sokoto Caliphate that brought every person from Adamawa to Sokoto and said it is one kingdom. They now said it was a Muslim North.
Sanusi reveals real problem with Nigeria

“The Colonialists came, put that together and said it is now called the Northern Nigeria. Do you know what happened? Our grandfathers were able to transform to being Northerners. We have not been able to transform to being Nigerians. The fault is ours.

“Tell me, how many governors has South West produced after Awolowo that are role models of leadership? How many governors has the East produced like Nnamdi Azikiwe that can be role models of leadership? How Many governors in the Niger Delta are role models of leadership? Tell me.

“There is no evidence statistically that any part of this country has produced good leaders.

“You talk about Babangida and the problems of our economy. Who were the people in charge of the economy during Babangida era? Olu Falae, Kalu Idika Kalu.”

He added, “we talk ethnicity when it pleases us. It is hypocrisy. You said elections were rigged in 1959, Obasanjo and Maurice Iwu rigged election in 2007.

“Was it a Southern thing? It was not. The problem is: everywhere in this country, there is one Hausa, Ibo, Yoruba and Itshekiri man whose concern is how to get his hands on the pile and how much he can steal.

“Whether it is in the military or in the civilian government, they sit down, they eat together. In fact, the constitution says there must be a minister from every state.

“So, anybody that is still preaching that the problem of Nigeria is Yoruba or Hausa or Fulani, he does not love Nigeria.

“The problem with Nigeria is that a group of people from each and every ethnic tribe is very selfish. The poverty that is found in Maiduguri is even worse than any poverty that you find in any part of the South.”

EducationLAUTECH Alumni Raise N1.2 Million In Two Days, Target N1 Billion by information1(op): 8:10am On Jun 14, 2017
The Alumni Association of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, on Tuesday declared it had raised N1,246,500 in two days.

Bayo Adeyinka, an alumnus and one of the facilitators of the #Fundlautech project, made this disclosure in a chat with PREMIUM TIMES.

Mr. Adeyinka, alongside other former students of the institution, had on Monday in Ibadan unveiled the plan at a news conference organised by the alumni of the school under the tag, #Fundlautech team.

The plan was put in place by the Alumni Association to raise N1 billion within 90 days to help the school solve the funding challenge that has crippled it.

“As at this moment (Day 2), we have raised N1,246,500,” Mr. Adeyinka told PREMIUM TIMES Tuesday night.

He, however, said that although the project has attracted some form of criticism from certain quarters, the team will pursue its goal to the end.

PREMIUM TIMES reports that students of the institution on Tuesday expressed scepticism over the plan.

According to the students, any measure that does not offer a lasting solution to the perennial funding challenge is not acceptable to them.

“Raising funds for LAUTECH may sound good to the society because activities will resume, but this is only a way of putting a temporary smile on our faces,” Olatunde Bakare, President of the Students’ Union Government, had said.

He said for that reason, the efforts of the alumni association was not acceptable to the students.

But Mr. Adeyinka explained that such form of resistance was not unexpected, adding that the team would go ahead with its plan notwithstanding.

“People are enthusiastic about the idea but there are a few pockets of critics. It’s a new concept here, so a few resistance is not unexpected,” he said.

“We have placed so much emphasis on transparency. The website http://www.fundlautech.com even has a list of donors for transparency.

“Our goal is to raise N1 billion in 90 days. However, wage bill is N350 million monthly. So, once we get that we can put that on the table so the school can resume while other things like forensic auditing can go on.

“I believe if we achieve some measure of success, this may well herald a new vista for resuscitation of the educational sector in Nigeria,” he added.

PoliticsOver $15,000 Raised In 24 Hours Of Setting Up Gofundme For Family Of Sergeant by information1(op):
In a massive show of love and dedication to a cause, Nigerians from various parts of the world raised over $15,000 for the family of Sergeant Chukwudi Iboko, the policeman which was killed during the course of a robbery in a branch of Zenith Bank in Imo State.

As of 11.08pm on Monday, $16,476 had already been raised on a fundraising medium, GoFundMe, by 390 folks.

The feat was accomplished within 24 hours of the start of the campaign by PUNCHNewspapers as well as other social activists in the country, led by Kayode Ogundamisi.

The late sergeant in whose honour the project was initiated, Chukwudi, died on February 23, 2017 after confronting some robbers who invaded a Zenith Bank branch on Wetheral Road, Owerri.

The late father of 8 children, in a 2.58 video recording unvieled in June 2017, could be spotted engaging a four-man robbery gang in a gun battle, where he shot dead one of the robbers.

The video, which went viral on the social media, also caught Chukwudi being shot at by one of the robbers after he ran out of a security post at the entrance of the bank.

Investigation by The PUNCH showed the victim died a day after the incident.

His widow, Rose, in an exclusive interview, lamented that one of their eight children, Chukwuebuka, died from shock on the day of the father’s burial, adding that the police authorities abandoned her and her surviving children.

She also said Zenith Bank only settled the burial of her husband.

Readers had challenged PUNCH Newspapers to create a system to raise funds for the deceased’s family, with many Nigerians pledging to support the cause.

With the support of some activists, PUNCH Newspapers took up the gauntlet and created a GoFundMe account for the family on Sunday, setting a target of $15,000.In less than 24 hours, the target was exceeded.

PUNCH Metro observed that the highest donation was $1,000 and the least was $5.

While some of the donors commended the courage of the deceased policeman, others asked the Nigerian government to also support the family.

One Elochukwu Obimdike, who gave $5, said, “You won’t know (what) this feels until it happens to someone that you know.”

Another donor, Tope Fasua, who gave $120, asked that part of the funds should be used to support the other policemen involved in the tragedy.

“Please, let us use this money for the other affected policemen and to put Zenith Bank and Nigerian Police under pressure. Thanks The PUNCH for this initiative. You clocked the amount in one day, plus extra,” he wrote.

Another contributor, Tinu Ojikutu, who gave $20, said, “Your husband and your dad was such a brave man. He was a hero. I pray the Lord continues to comfort you all. God bless you.”

Nigerians, who are willing to make contributions, but could not explore GoFundMe platform, requested that a bank account should be opened in the name of the family for naira donation.

A Twitter user, Morakinyo, @tipsy8701, said she had difficulty donating to the cause through GoFundMe.

“Please, can PUNCH provide a bank account to pay the fund? My payment is not going through on the platform. Thank you,” she tweeted.

Another Nigerian, Stan, with a Twitter handle, @Stannwasky, was also interested in donating, but for the technicality of the online platform.

“Don’t know how to donate through this stuff,” she wrote.

On the GoFundMe page, one Fredrick Obinna-Raymond Chukwuemeka, requested the opening of a bank account domiciled in Nigeria.

He posted, “Please, is there any Nigerian bank account (in which) one can make his own donation?”

Visitors to PUNCH Online, who read the story on the GoFundMe fundraising for the Ibokos, also wanted to donate in naira.

A poster, with the alias Soulchild, wrote, “PUNCH, how can one donate to this cause? And must I only donate in USD? You are limiting the amount that can be raised by disenfranchising those of us that do not have domiciliary accounts.”

Another reader, identified as Twins, inquired, “Is there an account number one can pay directly into?”

One Moses also indicated interest, saying, “PUNCH kudos. To get more support which many of us want to give, kindly publish a bank account number we can credit in naira.”

Amebo wrote, “PUNCH, please publish the account number to enable my folks back home to make some payment to the account. I have already instructed them to donate some money into the account.”

A Nigerian, who claimed to be resident outside the country, Dike Offor, said he had been following the story religiously and would like to assist the Ibokos.

“Please PUNCH, I don’t reside in Nigeria, but I am up to date with the news in my great country…please, I need the account number of the fundraising for the family,” he said.

Following this, PUNCH Newspapers has decided to open a bank account for the purpose of raising funds in naira for the family.

Meanwhile, The PUNCH and its partners would soon announce three non-governmental organisations that would manage the funds raised for the family to ensure accountability.

SportsSaudi Arabia Bans Messi, Barcelona Shirts by information1(op): 7:42am On Jun 12, 2017
Saudi Arabia war against Qatar has deepened with the latest being criminalising being dressed in a Barcelona shirt in the country. This means that supporters wearing a Lionel Messi or Neymar shirt will go to jail in the Saudi Kingdom.

Qatar Airways has been a sponsor of the Catalan team for four seasons, with its name emblazoned on the club’s jersey.

Now, the Saudis have decreed that wearing the shirt could earn one a fine of up to £120,000 and a 15-year prison sentence.

The new decree came after the Kingdom also banned hotels from watching Al Jazeera channels, a global TV network supported by Qatar.Tensions in the Gulf region have seen countries such as Saudi Arabia boycott Qatari entities – and their measures could impact football fans who wish to wear Neymar and Lionel Messi replica shirts.

Qatar’s Arab neighbours have blacklisted entities such as Qatar Airways over their alleged extremist connection, with Barca shirts sporting the airline’s logo said to be outlawed. Qatar have rejected the claims.

The ban comes amid a diplomatic row as Saudi Arabia blacklisted entities and individuals that they perceive as connecting Qatar to extremist groups, with the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Yemen and Bahrain included.

Barcelona have been sponsored by Qatar Airways for the past four seasons, but they have agreed a new four-year deal with Japanese online retailer Rakuten from the start of the 2017-18 campaign.

Last summer, Barca’s own fan base called for the club to cut ties with Gulf state Qatar, which included a petition signed by over 60,000 people.

Christianity EtcNigeria Will Lose Billions If TB Joshua Relocates — Experts by information1(op): 12:58pm On Jun 11, 2017
Certain stakeholders in the tourism industry on Sunday encouraged the Federal and Lagos State Governments to dissuade Pastor Temitope Joshua, generally known as, TB Joshua, from moving the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) to Israel from Nigeria.

They informed the News Agency of Nigeria that Nigeria will lose billions of naira to religious tourism if Temitope Joshua and SCOAN should make the plan true.

NAN reports that TB Joshua, during one of his church services, lately declared that he was about to move to Israel from Ikotun, a suburb of Lagos.

It was disclosed that TB Joshua was in Israel lately where he held meetings with the mayors of Jerusalem, Tiberia and the Jordan Valley.

He was cited as saying that he was offered different facilities very close to the biblical site of the Sea of Galilee where he could organise meetings for international pilgrims.

NAN also reports that SCOAN established in 1994 does not have another branch in Nigeria outside its international headquarters located in Ikotun.

Some heads of government from African countries had also visited SCOAN to seek spiritual restoration and advice from Pastor TB Joshua

Mrs Ime Udo, the General Secretary of the Nigerian Association of Tour Operators (NANTA) told NAN that Nigeria would lose billions of naira from religious tourism revenue if SCOAN actualised its planned relocation to Israel.

Udo said Joshua’s planned action would lead to a reduction in the human traffic of local and foreign religious tourists that normally patronised SCOAN.

Udo said, “Religious obligations have become a fashionable trend all over the world as a means of expressing beliefs and faith in the ability of God to protect and guide mankind.

“Religious practices both under the auspices of Christianity, Islam and traditional practices have in no small way contributed to the development of tourism in the world.

“Christian pilgrimages to Israel have formed an economic platform for the empowerment of the localities and contributed to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country.

“Also, Saudi Arabia has been benefiting immensely economically from many Islamic faithful who converge there twice annually on holy pilgrimage.

“With these scenarios and many others around the world, it has become valid that religious tourism has become a source of economic revival to a country and its people, “she said.

According to her, thousands of foreign religious tourists visit SCOAN monthly to worship and for other spiritual healings.

She said that these tourists would fly into Nigeria; lodge in hotels, board commercial vehicles, patronise eateries and visit other tourists’ sites around the locality.

Udo said that all these had been translating into huge revenue for the Nigeria economy.

“The local community; hotel operators, food vendors and others around SCOAN must have benefitted from tourists.

“SCOAN has, no doubt, contributed immensely to the tourism profile of Nigeria with several heads of government from various African countries that had visited there to seek spiritual restoration and advise from Pastor TB Joshua, ” she said.

Udo advised the Federal and Lagos State Governments to encourage SCOAN to remain in Nigeria as part ways to develop our tourism sector.

A member of SCOAN, Mrs Iyabo Emmanuel, said that she was in church service when their General Overseer, Pastor TB Joshua, announced to the members on the offer given to him by the Israeli Mayors.

Mrs Emmanuel, popularly called “Iya’’(Mother) Synagogue, said that Pastor Joshua never said that he had agreed to such a proposal from the mayors.

“I have been worshipping in SCOAN since 1994 when TB Joshua established it newly in Ikotun area.

“I worked with TB Joshua for 15years before I resigned and ventured into selling of provisions. Then, I was the chef; head of canteen and bakery.

“I am still a full-time member of the church and I will continue to worship there. I am one of those that had benefitted from the church,” she said.

Emmanuel said that many residents and business owners would suffer if TB Joshua should relocate SCOAN from Ikotun.

She said that majority of business owners around the area depended solely on the visitors to the church and they used to patronise facilities around the church.

A hotel operator, Mrs Anthonia Chuks, told NAN that if the rumour that TB Joshua was relocating to Israel eventually turned to reality, the hospitality business in that area and the state would suffer and fold up.

“Ninety–five per cent of guests that lodge in hotels in the community are international and local visitors outside Lagos and they are SCOAN members.

“We have over 130 rooms and are always fully booked every weekend.

“ We usually enjoy huge patronage from Fridays to Sundays weekly; and they are mostly SCOAN members from near and far,” she said.

Similarly, Mr Solomon Oyelade, a car-hire operator, said that since the rumour of the planned relocation of the church to Israel, the patronage of cabs had reduced drastically.

Oyelade said that in the past, he used to go to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos seven times in a day to transport international passengers down to SCOAN.

“But, since the incident of collapsed building in the church premises years back, the patronage of foreigners had reduced.

“ With this present rumour of relocation, we hardly carry passengers from Airport two times a day. The patronage has reduced beyond expectations, “he said.

Also, Mr Uche Maduako, a food vendor, appealed to TB Joshua not to accept such offer from the Israeli mayors.

He said that behind every rumour there is an iota of truth.

He also urged the Federal and the Lagos State Governments to support the continuing stay of TB Joshua in the country.

“The government should make the country worth staying for him and ensure they support him in all ramifications,” he said.

Maduako urged the government to renovate the bad roads around the church, adding that the condition of the roads was not encouraging.

He said that the contributions and impacts of TB Joshua in that community could not be overemphasis.

“The man of God has contributed immensely to the betterment of the community; employed thousands of graduates and non-graduates to work in the church and in other investments of the church.

“TB Joshua always ensures that there is constant power supply and adequate security in the area, ” he said.
