I was once like you. That was about 20 years ago. Some stuff just didn't add up, especially in the Bible and Christianity. Asked my moms, she rebuffed me, exactly what your mum did. My dad is late. Asked some Christian friends. Blank wall. Some recommended I asked their pastors, when I did, more blank walls and stupid answers. Some even said I should wait and ask Yahweh when I die. I'm like duh, I need my answers when I'm alive not dead. Some deflected by saying the holy spirit would reveal it soon. It never came, more than 20 years. And in those years, I learned more by myself. And thanks to the internet and (maybe) Nairaland, I know much more.
Truth is, religion was a tool to control humans. And control is power, and with power comes money etc. Emperor Constantine of Rome spread christianity by the sword. Why should someone force you to take something that would benefit you by threats of killing you? Same way Islam was spread by the Arabs and Moors. Same old power.
