vandarsar: Mali is playing good or are you a kid who just started following soccer yesternight? Mali was number three in Africa by default last year and they cement that with a smooth qualification to this year nations cup where they still manage to retain their 3rd position in Africa. Remember your own super eagle had one of the worst year in her football history last year and that's why we had to drop so low on the table.

Don't judge Mali by that 4:1 we trash them cause even Nigerians were flattered by that score line. And for me, 2 things are involved; is either Keshi was able to identify the strength and weaknesses of that team whom he has coached before or Nigeria helping Mali in the war back home is kinda too emotional for the Malian players to handle, either way I might be wrong.

Lastly, if you take your time to check the malian team u will find some real good qualities, players like sammassa, sow, sisokko, keita, diakitte etc so they are player who have been playing together for long and knows how to threat the ball well, and if you've been following African football very well, you will agree with me that Malian league is doing very well through Stade Maline.
To me, apart from the North Africans on their good day, Malians are the nearest to Nigeria's traditional free-flow style (which we lost for many years and only just rediscovered).

Those guys are skilful and pass around. You can see what their WestHam guy, Modibo Maiga, was doing with our defenders before we found our rythm.

Malians have good footballers. I don't know why they don't do better. Player for player, we were hardly better than them, but we always beat them.

Frostyzone: Dude, stop embarrassing yourself. Did you know that Mali was 25th in the world and the 3rd ranked team in Africa, even before the Afcon began?

Nigeria on the other hand, weren't even at the top 50(We were 52nd).

Nigeria then jumped 22 paces, mainly because of their Afcon success, and people like you still have the audacity to question legity of the ranking system.

What did you expect? For Nigeria to magical jump 40 paces and automatically make it to the top ten, abi?

Really, sometimes some people don't make use of their reasoning faculty at all!
I tire o.

I wonder what they want Egypt to rank in 2010, after winning three consecutive AFCONS (2006, 2008 and 2010). Maybe Egyptians should be expecting No 1 in the world then.

They have not lost any match since November 2011. That's one and half year without losing a match.

Afam4eva: Is there any logic behind England been higher than portugal in the rankings? Portugal has achieved more than they have.
Check performance over last 1 years (last 10 matches)

England: 5 wins, 4 draws, 1 loss
Portugal: 5 wins, 2 draws, 3 losses

Recent performances carry more weight. It is hardly by history.
Sports › Re: Eagles Now 30th In FIFA Rankings by Jarus(m): 2:35pm On Feb 14, 2013
Ghana is still ahead of us because:

they came 4th in AFCON 2012 (which Nigeria did not qualify for); came 2nd in AFCON 2010.
they didn't struggle in qualifiers like Nigeria (posted decent results)
played more quality friendlies and won
they gathered 7 points in AFCON group stage (played in January) and Nigeria had 5 points (quarters, semis and finals are February, not reading yet)

Winning Nations cup (high weight both in terms of importance and recentness) is good, but it wont just erode past poor poor performance like that. This ranking is based is not based on just one match or one month. It covers at least 12 months, with the most recent carrying the heaviest weight.
Sports › Re: Eagles Now 30th In FIFA Rankings by Jarus(m): 2:26pm On Feb 14, 2013
many people don't know how this works.

FIFA ranking is based on performance over a number of years(don't know exactly, but probably 3 years or 36 months).

The older the month, the lower the weight and the most recent carries more weight. Each month also weighed based on importance of match - more weigh for comptetitive, less for friendlies

So assuming

February 2013 - 36 points
January 2013 - 35 points
December 2012 - 34 point
November 2012 - 33 point

goes on till say
May 2010 - 3 point
April 2010 - 2 point
March 2010 - 1 point

Next month (March 2013), February becomes 35 and March becomes 36, while April 2010 becomes last month (1 point).

Now, Nigeria did not qualify for 2012 ANC and had 0 (or few points if it played and won/drew friendlies) in those months. Mali had points (remember they came 3rd in that tourney).

So if you aggregate those not-too-old good performance, Mali has an edge. Nigeria has good weight in recent performance but may not be enough to neutralize recent poor performances. But the good thing is the value of teh old bad performance reduces with time.

And in any case, I think this current rating was up to January 31st (when we had only played the group matches - 2 draws, 1 win). So it may not include the QF, SF and Final wins (played in February) yet.

Afam4eva: What's England looking for in the top 10 and they're even ahead of Portugal.
You think it's only one win or loss that earns you your ranking?

No, Mali qualified for and came 3rd in AFCON 2012 (just last year) and Nigeria did not qualify.

The point is still reading for them, even though recent performance carry more weight.

phreakabit: Do you reside in his head? Your reply as well as mine would be based on mere speculation, as none of us knows if he would have protested or simply played along.
For someone that twitter-said "I was voted as Nigeria's best player in 2009 by Nigerian fans but I was turned to a spectator in world cup" only few weeks ago? What does he want Uche to say? He was our best performer in AFCON qualifiers, but ended up more as a spectator in Nations cup.
Sports › Re: Osaze's Congratulatory Message To The Super Eagles by Jarus(m): 2:41pm On Feb 13, 2013
onatisi: this super eagles attack is not sharp,we created so many chances in the last match but only managed to convert one.i know that keshi knows that if this se comes against a very strong team they would have plugged those holes.we still need the likes of osaze ,mrtins and taiwo for next year world cup.
No team score all chances. That we have many chances show our attacking football.
Scoring 11 goals and never pushing any game to penalty is good enough.

What we witnessed in this AFCON, especially from knock-out stages, was Nigeria's traditional style - possessive and attacking football.
Sports › Re: Osaze's Congratulatory Message To The Super Eagles by Jarus(m): 2:37pm On Feb 13, 2013
phreakabit: Absolutely correct sir. Although Ideye holds up the ball for Emenike, he is way to greedy (has been since his U20 days), shot shy, somewhat slow, and not a good finisher (evident all through the competition). We need some one like victor Moses who forces the defenders to commit fouls, take long range shots, step up to score goals when the top striker is having an off game. I honestly think Osaze fits the bill.
I disagree. Ideye is hardworking and actually only a less powerful version of Emenike. He didn't score goals because he wasn't deployed as centre-forward, he operated from the wings most times. Emenike-Ideye combination is like Rashidi-Amokachi combo.

phreakabit: The problem with most Nigerians is they don't see beyond the first 11 and they easily get carried away by any victory attained. Our starting eleven is still very shaky ( don't lie to yourself, it is), we do not have a bench (everyone who came in from the bench with the exception of Fegor/Onazi only made things worse)!

Ikechukwu Uche (Sadly)
Juwon Oshaniwa (calamity)
Azubuike Egwuekwe (wasted height, too slow and clumsy)
Joseph Yobo (Thank God he is leaving)
Obiora Nwankwo( Not good enough, should be Joel Obi instead)

surely we can offer better than the players listed above, can't we? BTW, you keep mentioning "younger" players, can you please tell me who is actually younger than Osaze in that team? My bet is football age aside, only a handful are. remember Mikel and Osaze are the only ones we can account for. We all saw them grow.
Would Osaze have accepted sub role?

Ike Uche didn't have a good tournament, but that didn't take away anything from his ability. He was Nigeria's deadliest and most consistent striker before AFCON. So nothing says Osaze would have had a good tournament too.
Sports › Re: Osaze's Congratulatory Message To The Super Eagles by Jarus(m): 2:28pm On Feb 13, 2013
In fairness to him he has some passion for Nigeria, whether we like it or not. He had already made plans to go to Nations cup and already informed his club. He thought he was a sure banker, hence his bitter reaction when he wasn't named in the final squad.

His problem is trying to do things his own way - not the way the technical crew want it. For example, he gave condition he would be shuttling between AFCON in SA and England for his wife's delivery expected that duirng AFCON.

In any case, I think his not going was a blessing. I'm not sure Osaze has the humility to sit on bench like other senior players like Yobo and Uche. He could have caused stir in the camp.

But all these don't take way his commitment to Nigeria.

By the way, I am an alumnus of OAU too, but I'd just like us to stop deluding ourselves. This is no different from when politicians promise us floating cities and air-conditioned bridges and we start dancing azonto, not knowing we're being played like provincial dullards.

That wikipedia link will open your eyes on the foolishness behind the original post on this thread, as well as why we look like real dumbasses when we make a mountain out of this.
