Career › Re: Multinational Company Vs. One Man Business by Jarus(m): 10:45pm On May 23, 2012
adami48: A one man bussines is a hell to experience if am nt mistaken,bt i know am nt cos am talking out of experience, for example, i worked with a multination company, that can boast of hundreds of active branches world wide, (le meridien)an soon because of the so called PRIVITISATION EXESICE dat took place some years ago it was sold out.

we never knew the whole stuff was in the hands of criminal polititial that hav less or no plans for the masses, the place was now sold out to BAR JIMOR IBRAHIM,
He drove all the expertrates from france and came in with some group of people dat has no single experince in the industry and made them managers, name the place NICON LUXURY ABUJA,

Some of the staff there have put in some 3years b4 Mr Jimor claimed the plaace, cos he claimed asset and liability, took over the place, didnt pay staff for the firsth 3 months, intead he told them he can flush them and get himself some new hand afterall NO WORK FOR NAIJA,
LEFT THE PLACE LAST YEAR NOW DOIN WELL IN WERE I AM,
BUT AS AT NOW THERE,STAFF WELLFARE ZEROOOO, no staff bus, no salary increment for the a past six years, no maitenance of the building, since Le Meridien renovated that place by the help of the FG, till date nothing nothing, NO CONDITION OF SERVICE, U WORKED FOR 9YEARS AND YOUR PAY WILL BE LESS THAN A HUNDRED THOUSAND(BENEFITS)No gud health care service, staff that has no were to go cos of the years they ve wasted are dying there,

But the most anoying part of it all is, he will come out in maybe AIT or NTA, to say hes doing a good job , hes staff are well payed, and hes renovating the place seriouly
THAT MAN IS WICKED WHOEVER WANT TO SEEK EMPLOYMENT IN HES COMPANY SHOULD TINK AGAIN,

THE MEDIA ONLY MADE HIM WEALTHY BY ALWAYS TALKING ABOUT HIM, THE MAN HAS NOTHING, WE KNOW WHO HES WORKING FOR,
IN CONCLUSION BFORE U ENTER ANY ONE MANS BUSSINES U NEED A RETINK
I once did a satire on loud-mouth Jimoh Ibrahim(about 3 years ago) and somebody said it was because he didn't give me job. I can never apply to a Jimoh Ibrahim company. He is a paper entrepreneur.

I equally have a friend who just left Addax in Nigeria here about 3months ago to Norway to join Maersk Oil & i heard that the pay is mad and very worth it...smiley So homeboy got his wife to resign & gently relocated his family a few weeks ago...cheesy Boys are not smiling when it comes to Oil money oh.....lol!
You guys are opening my eyes to inter-regional opportunities within the industry. But I think this labour mobility will be more difficult for us non-technical guys.
Sports › Re: Drogba And Toure, Who Should Be African Footballer Of The Year? (Poll) by Jarus(m): 8:46pm On May 22, 2012
Surprised only one person mentioned the Chipolopolo guys that won ANC, defeating Drogba and Toure's CIV in th finals.

Drogba had a low season but obliterated by two crucial final goals. He looks likely to land the gong due to those critical performances when it mattered most.

The Top 5 should look like:

1, Drogba
2, Toure
3, Christopher Katongo (Zambia)
4, Papis Cisse
5, Demba Ba

@vislabraye
He had won it twice before.

@Chydike77
Utaka can never make Top 7. Scoring few tap-in goals don't win you best player. There are other African players doing better than Utaka in Ligue 1, even in Montpellier.
Fashion › Re: Man's Biggest Neccessary Evil In Corporate Fashion... by Jarus(m): 7:59pm On May 22, 2012
I'm somehow indifferent. In my days in financial service sector, tie was compulsory, so I had no choice and I didn't have any problem with it though. In my current organization, it is voluntary, so I do it like once or twice a week(Mondays and sometimes Tuesdays). But I can never think of tie except it's official.

I also prefer my tie slim and not too long.

Mavor: John Utaka is the second person In the french league to score a hat trick twice in a row some seasons ago. The only other person and the first to achieve this was the legendary Frenchman Just Fontaine, the person with the record for most goals in a single World Cup (15 goals!!!). Guess how John Utaka was rewarded? In the 3rd match after the first two, he was benched cos the Frenchies didnt want a blackman breaking their beloved Just Fontaine's record.
Conspiracy theory.

flexyonline: Just to answer a few questions here abt Nigerian IOCs.

1) It is my personal opinion that connections can get you in maybe 5% of the time. I do not want to say it's impossible which is why I'm going for 5%. Some of the brightest guys you all knew in school (those guys u call Efiko, who were dirt poor then) work for these companies now. When I joined joined about 7 years ago, I had the best engr grads from Ife, Uniport, Uniben in my set. So it is a fallacy in my opinion when we talk about knowing somebody to get in. These companies have the strictest internal checks even for recruitment.

2) A lot of people actually do not know what goes on in IOCs in Nigeria regarding pay and benefits. I'll give a rule of thumb though: if you know anybody that tells you his monthly basic salary is 1 million, know that it is about 55% of his total pay. He still has a lot of benefits some of them bothering on the absurd. For example, you get rent allowance which is more than 2.5 million for entry level where I work, safety allowance (0.5 monthly salary), furniture allowance, generative purchase allowance, generator fueling allowance, car allowance, car fueling allowance, security allowance, children education allowance, 13th month, success sharing, home ownership, end of negotiation pay, car refurbishment, field allowance, shift allowance. They even pay you if your child, spouse or parent dies. All these though are due to the unions. No management loves you that much to want to give all that. If you then factor in your typical yearly increase, you are not doing badly at all. Personally, my basic salary is five times what it was when I joined 6/7 years ago.

3) on NYSC, the company has a policy to absorb whoever NYSC sends to them until the quota is filled up. The advice is, get yourself posted there and report early. I'm not ruling out influence in this also.

4) on stock options, we typically don't do this. It was broached at one point but the opinion amongst employees is that they do not want to transact business with management in that way I.e. give me my money and I'll go do what I want with it.

I also do not agree with the sentiment that spending years abroad in the industry gives you certain competitive advantages when you come home. It is a global industry and the technology is the same so I fail to see the competitive edge. In the instances I've seen, you are benchmarked against employees of similar years of experience and hired on that grade. We do not hire managers from abroad, we promote from within or bring an expatriate to do the job. Note that anybody of Nigerian heritage is not an expatriate by the company definitions even if you have a foreign passport. You come as a Nigerian, simples. Good thing is people don't mind because nairaland payroll is fantastic anyways.

This is all I can think of right now.

P.S. I'm posting with someone else's ID.

Your point No 1 is damn correct. This I have always said on this section(check that evergreen Investment- banking-derailed-to-Oil& Gas thread).

95% of recruitment in IOCs are merit-based. Mobil is the only one I can't guarantee 100%. The best student in my set is in Shell, the best student in the set after mine(both my friends) is also in Shell. The best student in my set in secondary school(who went on to finish 2nd best in his class in Ife) is also in Shell US. Loma on NL here was one of the best students in his set(4 years ahead of me) was also of Chevron.

The first two guys especially are from the poorest of homes you can think of.but very brilliant. And they scaled through Shell recruitment process. Another one, a brilliant Yoruba guy from a northern university(and staying with me in Lagos here) is also on Shell waiting list, having passed SRD, only waiting for space. He doesn't know anybody, in fact I was the one that brought him to Lagos(for NYSC in my former coy) and inducted him into 'corporate Lagos', polishing his raw brilliance. He is now with Oando pending the time Shell has a space for him.

I have always tried to demystify this common notion that you need to know someone before you get job.

By my experience and observation over years, your chance of getting job by MERIT in an IOC is 95%, private Nigerian company 70% (there is still merit in even Nigerian coys despite the exaggerated pessimistic mentality among Nigerians). Public sector is the one I can say is less than 50%.

There is a subsidized stock option, but not aware of funded MBA. Maybe Shell and Chevron guys enjoy this, but doubt it, cos none of my friends there has ever mentioned it in our regular industry gists.
Culture › Re: Jamb Question - What Is "Eku Ijoko" In English ? (winner Gets Recharge Card) by Jarus(m): 6:46pm On May 19, 2012
Yoruba culture is one that gives great emphasis to greeting, probably more than any other culture. So, many things that don't have special greetings in many cultures have in Yorubaland Simply 'eku everything'. Eku subsidy sef lol.

An Englishman will tell you Hello or Hi for most of these greetings, probably including what a Yorubaman will say 'eku ijoko' for.

Not in any of the majors(Shell, Total, ENI, Agip, Chevron, and Mobil). But in one of the independent E&Ps (Afren, Seplat, Seven Energy etc). For obvious reasons, won't be specific.

BIGER BOY: When I first posted here, I didn't quite read the previous pages but now I did, and it has put my brain on overdrive (God help me get this total job).

Just one thing what is the pay difference in total upstream and downstream for entry level non engineer position.?
Non-Engineer entry level @ Total downstream: max 4m pa
Same position @ Total Upstream: 9-11m

I have 4 years experience in the downstream sub-sector and asked Total downstream for 7m few months ago, but we couldn't reach an agreement, but while I was on that I got an upstream, for a higher figure and bonned Total.

Career › Re: Any Hope With 3.49 CGPA? by Jarus(m): 6:56am On May 19, 2012
The missed 0.01 could surely have made a difference( at least it gets you shortlisted where the requirement is 2.1) , but that is surely not the end. If you made 3.49, you probably are as good as someone that made of 2.1 of 3.6, maybe a few errors made the difference, but your mental ability is not lower. So you should not have problem proving yourself where 2.2 get chance to compete with higher classes. Classes of degree matter most in shortlisting for employment test/interview. Beyond that, your ability matters more and once you're shortlisted, everybody is on the same plane to prove himself or herself. In fact, if you know your onions, you're at an advantage as the expectation will be low and you will be able to pull surprise to your interviewers. The expectations are usually higher for First Class and even 2.1 and you have to do on top of your game to impress the job selectors/interviewers.
