I bought mine brand new in 2007, and strongly regret it. I should have bought used. So much better value for money to buy used ![]() Oh well, you live and learn. Point taken thought about Nigeria aging cars prematurely
Na true oyb talk o. More than 50% of brand new cars in Nigeria are company-bought. Others by politicians and government officials.I doubt up to 20% of brand new cars in Nigeria are privately bought. And I'm not talking about Kia. Not sure I have 3.5m (minimum for an average brand new car) to spend on car now. So waiting to become a manager like oyb to be given brand new official car. Lol Until then, make I dey manage my second hands dey go. Lol |
When I said here few years ago that Jimoh Ibrahim's business model is one built on talk rather than performance, someone said it's because he didn't give me job. The guy is one exaggerated, loud-mouth, money-miss-road businessman that paints himself in picture he is not. I have never respected him and can never work for any company associated with him. I pity Air Nigeria. |
People that know the industry inside out will tell you that Chachangi has the best pilots in the industry that is true. Their planes may not be best physically or give you the best of Behind service(even mallo dey their air hosts) but you can hardly fault the smoothness of their flights, especially landing and taking off. I have flown all, from Dana to Arik to Virgin(now Air Nigeria) to Aero to Bellview to Chachangi, and I can testify to smoothness of Chachangi's landing and taking off. Their in-flight services are however zero, but who cares, once I grab a copy of the day's newspapers. Arik used to have the best services 4-5 years ago, but they have dropped. They also used to boast of cha cha aircrafts, but not until I entered their Lagos-Ilorin okada-like aircraft 2 years ago. My own conclusion is: all na the same. This was the Dana I was already falling in love with. I continue with my indifference: hop into any next available flight, except when on official duty, in which case only Aero and Arik are officially allowed. |
Not that much unfortunately. 10-15%. Expenses are high relative to my income right now. But my monthly savings will increase a lot in the near term.
Same ship. Got a number of capital projects guzzling my income, so saving has been quite hard. Plus not disciplined enough. Changes cars every 1.5 years. Crazy Lagos house rent added to that. |

Just 3 months after losing Dr Femi Adekanye, here goes another eminent old boy(and former president of old boys association) of our alma mater, Offa Grammar School. Adieu Oba Oladele Olasore. First time I saw him live was when I was in JSS1 in 1994, when he presided over Old boys annual conference held in our secondary school. |
bayooooooo: Don't mind them. Even though, standard is not the same across schools, First Class can not be achieved without a measure of brilliance, dedication, seriousness and capacity for imaginative thoughts. Is it not funny that someone who made a third is accusing a First of not being able to defend his/her grade?Oh, this must be the best comment I've read on NL on this subject. Some people even expect First Class Bsc to know more than a professor! That is what they call defence of degree. |
Good one. I just hope it's not one of those populist decisions leaders take when elections(as substantive president) are in sight. |
tanimola22: I am not sure that there are no good jobs out there. The problem is overcoming the competition.Yes, that's it. There are still good jobs in Nigeria, but there may be spaces for no more than 10% of qualified folks. So the competition can be stiff. But the good thing is the industry is to a large extent merit-driven. I remember when I was shortlisted for Economist position in Total E&P early last year. 32 of us from Nigeria(the shortlisting criteria must have been extremely thorough given the thousands that applied), 5 US-schooling(Msc & MBA) Nigerians, another 5 or so UK-schooling(Msc & MBA) Nigerians. Altogether, about 42 of us were competing for one space. After the rigorous exercise that took place simultaneously in PH, London and one US city, one of the US guys clinched the job. So this is the kind of competition you should be expecting. |
I was also shocked to hear the news on Wednesday, first thru a friend's BB DP, later confirmed in The Nation newspaper. She was a good friend. We knew each other in 2007, during my service year, when I used to send articles to her. We had an extensive discussion some 2 years ago. We also exchanged email a couple of months ago, when she sent one his editorial boys to me for an interview. |
mbulela: Did Cecilia Ibru not get an award of such from this same source? The unfortunate truth. |
Why? For what? Add me as friend on NL here and send me a private message |
Just hope these guys are saving and investing. Amokachi comes to mind here. |
Hiding under BH to settle scores. |
Hmmmnnn, na wa o. Kudos to disciplinarian Ajibola's Punch. |
Becomrich and his anywhere-belle-face posts. I hail o ![]() |
bukahands: What work can I do as a biochemist in oil and gas industryA Bio-Chemist can get an O&G job in Nigeria but it is more competitive cos there are few spaces, unlike Engineers, Geologists etc. With an MBA? Not sure it will make much difference. |
Continue with the company-sponsored MBA. If it's convenient for you and you've got the resources to combine the two (and it is allowed), you can run both concurrently. I'm not a technical person but I think Msc Pet Eng will be more attractive to an IOC at starting stages. However, if not possible, your Bsc(Chemistry and Chem Engr) is enough to get you an IOC job, if you can prove yourself during the selection process. Davidylan is a scientist like you, I think. MBA will also be an advantage. |
Tanimola, Debosky, Jarus, Davidlyan and co. God has blessed you guys. Guys, I need your sincere advise. I have done a BSc in a UK university in Chemistry with Chemical engineering and by God's grace I'll finish with a First class (God willing). I wanted to study Medicine but I could not stand the number of years required. I also have some work experience as a shadow manager in a company, part-time for 2 years, here in the UK. (Sorry I am giving sketchy details but its necessary for private reasons). Now, I want to relocate to Nigeria and work in Nigeria. I am torn between an MBA in business administration and an MSc in Petroleum engineering. I love science oriented topics as I won scholarships from the University and Royal society of chemistry UK. I did not really enjoy the managerial role but I have some work experience in it. So, guys I need your advise! MSc petroleum engineering (my first choice) or an MBA?! I want to break into the petroleum industry but my fear is that if I have an MBA, I might be considered as a "jack of all trades" and hence, reduce my chances of entering the industry. I just want to break into the industry to gain the work experience as the money will come later. Which of the courses gives me a better chance of breaking into the industry?!
MBA is no jack of all trades. Tech people also do it, it's not for us management people only. Loma, a Computer Engineer formerly with Chevron, did MBA. So are many other technical guys. So it doesn't reduce your chance at all. There is even MBA Oil & Gas Mgt for RGU. That said, I think at this stage that you're trying to break into the industry, Msc Pet Eng stands you at a higher chance than MBA. When you're there, maybe after few years, you can do MBA. Most of the openings at the entry stage are technical. |
The lady is at fault too. Didd she marry him because of his 'oil money'? |
One man defriended and blocked me on FB because we argued on SLS. He criticizes but can't stand criticism. To think he is an FCA andd CEO of a consultancy firm. He even went ahead to report a guy that sided me in the argument to his (the guy's) employer (NDIC), himself being a former top guy in NDIC. He copied all the guy's FB posts and emailed it to a topshot in NDIC. The guy almost lost his job. Too bad an FCA behaved so childishly. But me I no send sha, I called his bluff. |
Enjoy your public holiday tomorrow |
When car develops fault in the middle of the road When parked in not-too-ok place/space When taking one-way (don't ask me why, ask LCC doing slow job on Ajah-Badore road, causing traffic) |
I never hear Lagbook before |
2good: Shell is one of the least paying company of the oil majors even in Europe. They are too stingyYeap. Even my guys there confirm. They are however very good at training. Heard Total poach their staff after Shell training with better pay. |
Mustay: To every mechanic - your last mechanic did a terrible job and he's gonna assure you of a 'job well done'.Dead right. I have changed more than 5 mechanics in the last 3 years, due to this ripping off thing, but it has always been from frying pan to fire, despite the initial assurance and nice words/jobs they start with. |
tanimola22: Hi House Members, Good evening to all of you!Latest info has it that Shell's Gross(I.e when all allowances are added) is also near 10m pa now. |
One vulcanizer once made quick 15k from me on alloy rim procurement. Somebody that got to where he claimed he bought the set for me got a price 15k lower than what the vulcanizer collected from me for the wheel the previous day. The experience with mechanic is countless. |
Good job by the police. |
LOL |
You do not need BA(Ed) any more; All you need are just; PGD (Ed). & ACA. With this 2 you can work any where be it Petroleum, Telecom, Banks, Insurance, Federal Minisry, State, LG, Schools among others. Your Accounting HND is still valid. Not all that have Bsc. Accounting are getting work. It is not easy in Nigeria now. and do not waste your money on unnecessary education that will frustrate you. Best regards.
Good, but a little fault. Some - many, actually - oil companies, as a matter of policy, don't hire HND for Finance/Accounting role no matter the additional qualifications, inasmuch as the candidate doesn't have a Bsc. He may be hired on contract though. This is why a close friend with ACA, ACIT and rounding up ACCA but HND is still a contract staff despite his depth. I know many people like this too. That said B.ED in accounting from a recognized schools(not the mushroom distance learning centres) can get you a job in top audit firms like PwC and co and banks, which don't usually look at course but 2.1 in any course for entry level. From there, you can move on, as your first degree will matter only little in experienced openings. |
