Nairaland General › The Grand Contest: Most Versatile Nairalander? by Jarus(op): 8:38pm On Aug 02, 2010
Yeah, you're right, Jarus has come again!

The contest now is: Who is the most Versatile, currently active Nairalander?
I mean somebody that has something meaningful to say or knows something about virtually everything.

I have three people in mind: Dayokanu, Ibime, Ajanlekoko. I need two more nominations before I put up a poll and we will discuss these personalities, their strengths, their limitations!

Who wears the crown? Most versatile Nairalander? Full citations to come later. The floor is open!
Politics › Re: Samuel Ladoke Akintola by Jarus(m): 8:11pm On Aug 02, 2010
My own old man, now very advanced in age, was a first republic politician, a die-hard Awoist. He also spent few days in prison in the aftermath of that 1962/63 crisis.
He knew both Akintola and Awolowo in person. The greatest politician from our town, Chief Josiah Sunday Olawoyin, was also a core Awoist. But we being northerners(Kwara Yorubas) the Awoists were minorities in the northern parliament. JS was the opposition leader then. He was a firebrand politician with thick tongue. He was present as an observer at the 1959 London conference. He was also imprisoned with Awo and co in 1962.

So you can imagine growing up around these core Awoists. I dare not say Awo is not as saintly as he is being portrayed in teh presence of my old, or else I dey find trouble.
But the good thing is everybody is entitled to independently challenge beliefs he grows up with.
Politics › Re: Samuel Ladoke Akintola by Jarus(m): 8:01pm On Aug 02, 2010
Head or tail, Dayokanu or Katsumoto, this thread has been very enlightening. We thank God Becomrich did not see it, or else . .  .
Much respect to both Awo and Akintola defenders, as everybody has been able to marshal his points, devoid of insults.

I, for one, still hold Awo in high regard, but I will not join those that see Akintola as a traitor.
Politics › Re: Samuel Ladoke Akintola by Jarus(m): 5:55pm On Aug 02, 2010
Yeah, this brings us to another area I have problem with Yoruba brand of politics.
There is this common belief every Yoruba must be in the same party - the Yoruba party.(AG, UPN, later AD).
Any Yoruba that is not in these so called Yoruba parties is seen as a bastard, or more nicely, sell-out.
Many Yorubas will quickly tell us that Abiola betrayed Awo in the second republic. Abiola pitched tent with NPN? And so what? Must every Yoruba man pitch tent with Awo's UPN? The likes of Akinloye, Akinjide and co that were Yoruba leaders of NPN were seen as outcasts for the simple reason that they didn't go with Awo's UPN. I have a problem with this brand of politics.

This is why a Yoruba party has never produced a president(UPN, AD). The stronghold doesn't go beyond the Yoruba territory.
Awo may be a more sagacious politician than MKO, I think MKO played wiser IMHO. MKO dodged politics of regional identification and was able to sell himself to whole Nigerians, easily winning a national election, a feat Awo did not achieve in three attempts.

This is not to take anything away from Awo, who I strongly believe, was the most visionary politician in Nigeria's history, but I have a problem with his style of politics.
Nairaland General › Re: Are U Proud Being A Nairalander? by Jarus(m): 5:34pm On Aug 02, 2010
I personally enjoy Nairaland community and I'm very proud to be a member, even though some couple of years ago, I was so addicted that it affected my time management in office, but now I have control over when to nairaland and when to stay off. I ahve been able to reach moderation.

That said, I think NL is the leading online informal media in Nigeria today. It has become a force to reckon with in opinion moulding in Nigeria.
I have seen Nairaland mentioned in serious analysis elsewhere. Professor Pius Akinsanmi, the Canada-based columnist with NEXT and member of Nigeria Village Square Editorial board, appears to be visitor to NL here, as I have seen him talk about NL in his article in the past.

Nigerian celebrities also, advertently or inadvertently, take NL seriously. So are journalists.

Andre Uweh:
Well done Jarus. But your father's loyalty would not have been with Awo nor Akintola, because they represented the West.
I guess what you meant here was that being from Kwara, classified as North then and till today, my parents would not have had loyalty with Western leaders of Awo and SLA.

Well, from first republic till today, my Offa(Kwara south) people have always identified with teh West. In the first republic, they went for AG, making them minority in NPC-controlled Northern region. In fact the leader of opposition in northern parliament was from my hometown(the late J.S Olawoyin, a die-hard disciple of Awo that was also imprisoned with Awo aftermath of the 1962/63 crisis). In the 2nd republic, they went for UPN, making them minority again in NPN-controlled Kwara state. In 1999, my people voted for AD in an APP-controlled Kwara. It was not until 2003 when PDP swept SW that my LG also lost its opposition bend.

So my people actually know more about Awo than Sardauna. My father was not left out, a core Awoist he is.
Politics › Re: Samuel Ladoke Akintola by Jarus(m): 12:36pm On Aug 01, 2010
Interested in this topic, but posting from phone, can't post long.
I think we Yoruba are being unfair with this man. He should command the same respect with Awolowo. Due to the blind loyalty of our fathers and grandfathers to Awo, when the misunderstanding btw Awo and SLA broke out in 1963, SLA was portrayed as a traitor, and demonized. My Dad was also a core Awoist and I grew up hearing all sorts of tale about how SLA betrayed Awo, and grew up hating SLA myself. But a dispassionate study of pre-independence and first republic politics convinced me that SLA was not as bad as portrayed and Awo not as saintly as we are being told. The story of Akintola conniving with the northerners was exaggerated. With due respect to Awo, especially as he is to me the most visionary leader in Nigeria's history, selfishness was his bane.
He wanted to eat his cake and have it. In the north, Ahmadu Bello sent Tafawa Balewa to the centre while he remained the regional leader. Awo left regional premiership for his deputy, SLA, went to seek power at the centre but lost out, now he wanted his premiership back, leading to the 1963 political unrest in the 'wild, wild west', there was mass violence, arson, war songs, etc, and since Awo was more respected and had larger followership, public opinion and sympathy were in his favour, and SLA seen as a traitor, a belief that has been successfully transferred up to this generation.
In fact some of the visionary projects known today as Awo's legacy, like Unife,Cocoa House, first TV station in Africa etc were Akintola's ideas, according to some people, I don't know how true that is.
My main point is SLA deserves equal respoect in Yorubaland like Awo.

TKB has said it all regarding oil trading.

Oil marketing buys in bulk and sells in retail outlets(i.e in filling stations).
Oil trading buys in bulk(and at larger volumes, in metric tonnes) but sells in wholesale. It involves importing and exporting of both crude oil and petroleum products.
That simple.

But before that I stayed in Core-Awo Block 3, 4 and 5
Yeah, I know all of them. I also stayed in Awo block 7 from years 2-4. 189(ground floor) in yr 2, 204 & 203(middle floor) in years 3 and 4.

I can see from here that we were on same block in your final year and my own part 2, me on ground floor and you on medical floor. That floor used to rock o, the Obesuya factor? I know some of those foreign students too. Simpson, a Liberian, was my friend and classmate and was always talking about Liberia war etc. There was also this Camerounian guy that used to sit in front row in Awo TV room anytime Barca was playing ball(Eto'o)U know VC, the longest serving student that colonized a room on that floor?
