Churches burnt, scores injured in Niger violenceThis is definitely wrong and borne out of ignorance and overzealousness. The Prophet(PBUH) lived with Christians and Jews during his time and I have not come across a record of his offensive against these people. Twenty four persons died on Sunday night while 10 others were injured at Kanbi on Bode Saa’adu-Jebba road in Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State. This road again!!! Oh God have mercy!!! This is a road I plied frequently, at least when I was left with no option than to travel by road, from Ilorin to Sokoto during my service year. That is the road I dread most. It has a profound record of road accidents. Accident today, accident tomorrow, God please save us in this country. Makes travelling by road scaring to me. May God give teh family of the dead the fortitude to bear this loss. Another tragedy in Katsina on Sunday claimed the lives of 13 members of a family on Funtua road, while six others were said to have died on Saturday in Malumfashi, also in Katsina State.Funtua road? Was this not the road where 7 Zamfara corpers perished in 2007? News like this make me move closer to God. Hmmmmmnnn. . . . lost for word! |
BlueDiva:wetin concern Naija schools with source anyway. Whether wiki or google or akarakoro.com, nobody cares ![]() |
More seriously please, is BCR truly serious with all these things he says or is he deliberately just making us laugh? I can't believe he's serious. |

Nigerians and their love for foreigners. . . . .more respected ko more repeated ni.
Why did u bolden just 'equal' and ignore the 'at least' that preceded it? 'More' means 'greater than', at least means 'greater than or equal to'. It's no contradiction. The statement 'at least equal, if not fairer' is just to introduce some mildness. In no way does it contradict my earlier categorical opinion that NL is not harsh at all on foreigners. |

Soludo is easily the best and most active CBN Governor Nigeria has ever had. Past CBN Governors were chosen from the pool of bank CEOs and the post was no more than the position of a CEO of a any other bank; in other words, it's regulatory role went not beyond on papers. Soludo was brought from academics, and with experience in international financial consultancy, he changed the tradition. The era of bank CEOs seeing the CBN Guv as just one of them, thereby not taking serious his policies, was over. Soludo was firmer. He came with fresh policies and implemented them to letter. He received death threats, yet he continued to do his job. Soludo is one of teh finest Economist to have come out of this country. Let's not emphasize his academic credentials because that doesn't automatically translate to good performance outside of academics, but the man showed he has a very deep understanding of global economy more than his predecessors. That bank consolidation is enough to knock off any criticism of Soludo. I wonder where our banks would have been today under this global meltdown if that policy had not been implemented. From the accusations against Soludo I have read in recent time, especially those that border on politics, I'm beginning to believe he's not as saintly as I used to believe before, but even at that, the man will leave the office as Nigeria's most visible, and indeed, best CBN Governor. That at least is a challenge to whoever is going to succeed him. |
probably it is his indonesia influenceThis is the explanation that keeps coming to my mind anytime I discuss this issue with people. |
Grizzly:I hate to hear this oft-quoted excuse. If our players are good enough, they will attract big clubs. Kolo Toure was fished out from ASEC and he is now a super star today. C. Ronaldo was from of S.Lisbon. Rooney from Everton. Ronaldo,RVN etc from PSV. Adebayor from Monaco. Secondly, you can still be outstanding in a small club. Eto'o was exceptional in Mallorca. Singlehandedly carried the club in 2003/2004 season; hence the fight for his signature by Madrid(his real owner) and Barca at the end of that season. So the stark fact is that our players are not good enough to attract interest from big clubs. Look at Adebayor for example, fed fat by fabregas and co. Eto by messi, xavi, iniesta et al. So i think that has a part to play.If Martins were to play for arsenal, dont u think he'll bang in much more goals? [I thought you would say Ronaldinho as some peopel used to say before. The fact is that Eto'o is as important to Barca as Messi. It's mutual. No one is living on another!!! |
I have never experienced it. The two times they robbed our Lagos home, I was not in Lagos. I was in Kwara. When they robbed our Ibadan home in 1999, I was also not in Ibadan. I was in Kwara. When they came to rob our Kwara home in November 2007, I was not at home, I was in service in Sokoto then. . And these guys, as Popsy described them, were small boys 18-21. They locked all the children in one room, told Grandma they will not kill her son while they overpowered him. They went away with his newly acquired Toyota Camry, some cash and packed all the phones they came across in the house. Street robbery/mugging? I have never experienced that one too. I stroll around in my area in VI carefreely but I have never been mugged. Highway robbery? I have also not experienced that one too. |
@Richy, Hope u're not taking Dayokanu for Davidylan? |

This topic has been overdiscussed on NL. But most likely, most of the contributors here were not around when that topic raged on NL 2 years ago. I finished from Ife and it is almost natural for me to go with the school. But relegating sentiments to the background, even If I did not go to Ife, I would still have vouched for that school as Nigeria's best.In fact, I belong to the school of thought that believe 'either Ife or no other Varsity in Nigeria'. Being a product of the school, I believe these factors, among others, make Ife stand out: Optimistic outlook: Unlike many other schools where freshers are indoctrinated with 'you can't' mentality, the psychology in Ife is that of 'can'. Ife makes you believe you can. I never dreamt of making a 1-1 when I walked into Ife as a fresher in September 2001, but within few weeks of integrating myself into the system, my outlook changed. Inundated with stories of successful students, some of whom had graduated decades ago; lectures on how to make it etc, you can't help not going for the kill. You become fired up with those inspiring stories.(NB: Of course, you would have had the potential before, but Ife brings it out). In many schools, discouraging stories of how some students were 'victimized', prevented from making 1-1, 2-1 are what you will be served as a fresh student seeking advice on how to succeed in this school. I hate those stories. Merit-based admission policy Ife is one of the very few schools in Nigeria where merit is given a pivotal place in it's admission process. Of course, I'm not saying the school is totally immuned from 'Nigeria factor', but if you beat the school's admission cut-off then you can go and sleep. You need no godfather or deep pocket before gaining admission. I, for instance, never gave my credentials to anybody for admission. I was at home when I was told my name was already. My admission news was brought to me at home. Nobody will dispute the fact that giving merit the front seat in a school's admission vehicle makes it possible to get the best of brains. Competition OAU is widely accepted as Nigeria's most competitive University. And when I say competition among students, please I do not mean in terms of best cars!!!. Take a sample of best students in secondary schools, especially in the Southwest and ask them which university they wish to attend, I can say it that 50% of them will mention Ife. Ife is regarded as battle ground for best brains. In fact, some people believe you are still a local champion until you are a champion in Ife. In Ife, many people that were champions in their secondary schools are rendered ordinary. A friend of mine that was the best SSCE student in Kwara state, and perhaps North Central, in our set could not even lead his department, not to talk of faculty or school, when he got to Ife. The stars in school are those with very high GPs. Nobody cares about the car you use. Have a strong GP and you're a star on campus. People discuss your GP in rooms, in TV rooms, in classes etc. Your name spread like harmattan fire. You become refrence point in discussions, even after graduating. Environment & learning conditionThe role of learning environment and conditions in the success of students is known to everybody. In fact this is the basic difference between Nigerian and foreign Universities. Ife too may not be up to foreign unis by this criteria, but it is definitely far above other Nigerian public universities. No other public varsity can boast of constant supply of electricity & water supply like Ife. In Ife, because they know the students, being always conscious of their rights, will take to streets at the slightest maltreatment, the authorities pay great attention to students' welfare. In my first one month in OAU, I never experienced 3 minutes power failure. And in my five years there, I can't remember experiencing 24 hours without light or water. It is only in Ife that students are bold enough to tell management to postpone exams for breaching their right to one-week lecture free week before exam. Tell me, will students not do well under this condition? And I have not mentioned the beautiful, serene learning environment that can make you forget your worries and face your studies. Let's not delve into what being an Ife student/grad earns you outside school. That has been discussed in many previous threads. Of course, there is the ugly side of internal crises, induced by militant Students & Staff Unions. Great Ife is a school to be!!! No disrespect to Unilag, UI, ABU, UNN and Uniben though. |
Same topic was discussed by my colleagues in office via forwarding emails a couple of weeks ago and people were recalling the programmes with nostalgia. Quite young in the eighties, but I think most of those programme were still on by very early 90's, then I can come in. -Hearing that 'dindindin. . . . ' sound before network news used to annoy me. Before they finished the news by 9.45 I would have slept. -Liked tales by moonlight, 6.30 pm Sundays -Anytime that OMO jingles was being shown, all of us(my peers-youngies-in the family) used to rush to the parlour and sang along.Very interesting advert. -I did not watch Village headmaster, but I wish I watched it, given the way oldies talk about it -Found willie-willie very scaring. . . too afraid to watch it -There was a programme they used to do on NTA in the night then, I think on weekends, where these oyinbos will be laughing kekeke. Don't know the title of that programme but should be a comedy. -Watched 'No one but you' and 'wild rose' simply to be able to participate in discussions about it in school teh next day. |

Height of cruelty. This is pathetic. Justice needs to be done here on earth!!! |
Not a frequent reader. Lazy, read no more than newspapers and magazines, or any other material I can finish in 30 minutes. But I read Islamic books and my fav author there is Imam Ibn Taymiyya |
I'm also interested in this thread. I earn what could be said to be OK but my saving habit is not good enough!!! |
I'm reading this on Wikipedia now: Early yearshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obafemi_Martins The bolded part refers. There are two things here that I think are not correct. 1, That martins is an alumnus of OAU. 2, That Obafemi Awolowo was his maternal grandfather. First, I have read Martins profile time and again and I have never come across his gaining admission to OAU, not to talk of finishing. I'm 95% sure this can't be true, because I know OAU would have been celebrating him with Soji Fasuba, Olumide Oyedeji and a couple of OAU alumni that are making/made waves in sports. Second, I'm 100% sure of this. Chief Obafemi Awolowo, whom OAU was named after, cannot be the father of Martins' mother, the Alhaja that died recently. We all know Awo's children(late Segun, Oluwole, Tola, Tokunbo, Ayo). And the final straw: Obafemi is even his first, not family name. So before I go ahead and delete that sentence from Wikipedia via edit function, anyone know if I'm teh one that is wrong? |
No nigerian league striker can boost of even 12 goals in a full season let alone attempting acrobatics in scoringMinus Yakubu. Yakubu has never scored below 12 league goals in a full season since he entered EPL.
I don't agree with the poster of the topic Nigerian strikers have scored some fantastic goals over the last few years Martins scored an absolute screamer against Tottenham about two seasons ago,Kanu has also scored some good goals Word!!
Yes. I agree. Martins also score screamers. Kanu and JJ also score great goals.
rubbish!!!!! such goals are scored once in a career!!!! with all the goals henry scored for arsenal he cant boast of such a goal!!!!
Word, too. It's a once-in-a-career goal. Some analysts are already tipping it to rank with Zidane's goal (Vs Leverkusen) as one of the greatest CL goals ever. |
The IBB I know will not go for something unless he knows it's sure for him. He left the stage pre-2007 election because Obj was able to clip his wings. 2011 is not sure for him either. I don't think he'll come out in 2011. |

dayokanu:Yes. I remember you saying it before the draw that the teams you would like to avoid were Barca and Liverpool. You said in pre-draw threads that they can bring on any of Man U, Arsenal,Porto,Villareal or Chelsea but you wont' ask for Liverpool because they are CL specialists or Barca because they are red-hot at the moment. When I saw the draw that was what first came to my mind. Y'know, at the end of half-time Bayern didn't come out immediately. . .I though they had packed up and gone home Grin ![]() |
Sanusi is from Ondo state. |
Bryan Fury:See those debranding Nigeria in public!!! If I catch you, I will report you to ICPC |
This was exactly what came to my mind when I saw the goal. What a wonder strike!!! No, this Adebayor is not a fluke as I used to believe before. Sank Cameroun last week, sank Man City weekend and now another super strike. Forget about missing begging chances, this guy deserves some respect. But another thing that came to my mind: Why is it that Naija's lost players are the one doing this (I'm convinced Eto'o also has Nigerian origin, ditto for Muntari)? |
I know this woman. She is from from my town. But I don't think she's the best for the job now. Can BR tell me how she's more qualified than Tunde Lemo DG-Financial surveillance? Don't you think Lemo will have a firmer grip of the system than Alade? If a female is to be put there, I think Iweala is more than qualified. Just my token. |
