Politics › Re: Yoruba Brothers With Nigerian Skulls! Na Woo by Jarus(m): 3:29pm On Sep 26, 2008
Nairaland seems to be derailing, and this needs to be checked. Avowed tribal chauvinists like the starter of this thread and the notorious Deepzone and Queenisha are always manipulating topics to have tribal undertone. It's a pity MCUsman, who has always been of the defensive, is also going offensive, viz
MC Usman:
See as all the nbati bati Nairalanders that scan worldwide dailies for slight negative new on the north just ignore this.

Na diya way angry angry angry angry.
I'm a proud Yoruba , but in most of my previous posts(and if needs be,still now) I've had to defend the North because I see most of the Deepzone and Queenisha-led north-bashing as a mere venting of grudge and hatred.

Evil has nothing to do with tribe, pls. The attachment of tribe to this evil perpetrated by this eccentric person has nothing to do with his being a Yoruba.

Sports › 2008 African Player Of The Year by Jarus(op): 9:32am On Sep 25, 2008
Nine months have gone now and very soon, CAF and BBC will be nominating for African POtY.
From my point of view, no African player has shaken the world this year. Regular contenders Drogba,Eto'o and Essien did not have a particularly great year like the last 3 years. Injury did not help them all. Yakubu banged in goals but not convincing enough to tip him for the award.

If JJ had done this year what he did in Bolton and for Super Eagles 2002-2004, he would have easily clinched the award in a year like this, but unfortunately for him he shone at a time Eto'o was just too hot. This just is just not competitive.

I personally see Muntari as Africa's best in 2008. Did a great work at Portsmouth, for Ghana and already has a trade-mark rocket goal to his credit ijn Inter, before the red-card ban he's serving now.
Politics › Re: Who Could This Northern Thief Be? by Jarus(m): 8:49am On Sep 25, 2008
Fact is, whether Kwara state is a sharia state or no sharia state, Kwara remains a northern nigeria states and there is no amount of twisting by anybody that can remove Kwara that position. The people of Kwara state are happy for their state to remain a northern state, they are happy to be northern people. Only some trouble making elements among them will want to lump Kwaran state into south west nigeria. I have never met a Kwara indigene that doesn't regard him or herself as a northerner. If majority of the people want to belong to northern nigeria, who are you to dispute their opinion? Visit Kwara govt. website and come back to tell us where they belong.-Quotastyle
Nobody is saying Kwara is not a Northern state. But at no time was Sharia introduced in the state, much as I personally want it introduced there. So not qualified t be called a Sharia state like Zamfara etc
Kwara is no doubt a Northern state, but populated by 75% Yorubas. I'm a Yoruba-Kwaran, but I'm more of southerner than Northerner; but of course, that doesn't take away the fact that I'm a Northerner.

Yet they'll chop off people's hands for stealing a piece of stewed meat.[/quote]Sharrap, who told you Kwara is a Sharia state? Kwara is more South(Yoruba) than North!!! Just classified as North because of the 1914 geo-political mistake that saw Northern boundary being put after Offa/Erin-Ile, instead of just before river Niger.

I'm a Yoruba and a Kwaran(though Lagos based) but I'm more Southerner than Northerner. I even used to forget many times that I'm a northerner, geo-politically.

My problem with many Nairalanders on this politics thread, Deepzone and Queenisha in particular, is your ethnic jingoism and tribal chauvinism, which you take too far. Your rabid hatred for the north is monumental. You appear so jobless that you are always scavenging the news sites, looking for news that say something bad about North, and coming here to dump such stories, most times, as is the case here, out of context.

Did I hear you say how did I know Kwara was the state in question?

I know you will not say that, because by saying that, you are embarrassing yourself as an ignoramus of Nigerian politics, which I, for one, have always believed you and Deepzone are, going by your past posts I have come across[Deepzone, if you are reading this(and I know you will because the title will attract you as an avowed northern hater), you are still running away from the challenge I threw to you, since about 4 weeks ago,to prove that MM, and not Gowon, changed Nigerian currency]

For any informed/current political analyst, not like the Queenishas, it is easy to tell who the Governor was. Afterall, Akume(Benue),Dariye(Plateau),Audu(Kogi),Kure(Niger),Adamu(Nasarawa) are all still alive. FCT of course doesn't have a governor. May Allah forgive the sins of my late Governor Lawal(Kwara).

Nairaland General › Re: What Have U Gained So Far On Nairaland? by Jarus(m): 10:06am On Sep 19, 2008
Hmmmnn, just got to know this thread was already existing, as I had already been thinking along the line of initiating it.

I came across NL while doing some google search early last year, but I did not register as a member until some months after, and I must say I have learned a lot. I had always liked internet discussions and had been an active member of Bigsoccer forum for a while. But NL has made me literally forget all other internet discussion fora I belonged to before. Now apart from NL, ghanaweb is the other forum I visit daily, although my registration there has not been confirmed, almost a month after applying.

What have I gained/learnt in NL?
GRAMMAR CONSTRUCTION: Writing articles, long and short, has been one of my favourite activities for long, but NL has improved my skills in this art. There are a few N/landers whose choice of words, I must admit, are spellbinding. But I must say Landers are at their best when insulting or refuting an argument.
NEW WORDS I have also learnt some new words here.
ACCESS TO INTERNET I have come to know that many people have almost unrestricted, 24/7, access to internet than I thought pre-NL
NIGERIANS IN DIASPORA I've come to know that many Nigerians in diaspora are interested in and follow happenings in Nigeria
SERIOUS ISSUES I don't believe I can get serious issue resolved on NL thru open post. I send private messages to landers I believe can advise me(based on htheir antecedents-previous posts) on some issues, rather than open thread on it. Most of those threads are hijacked and the purpose defeated.
FUN Funny posts abound in NL, and I coudn't help laughing aloud in office many times
ADDICTION When I finished my service and started work, and for the first time, had unrestricted access to internet, I became more active in NL that my performance was seriously impaired.I once spent the whole office day in NL, exploring one old topic of about 50 pages, when my Manager was on leave. And as I'm typing this, 2 hours after coming to office, I'm yet to start work, still on NL. the bad side, I must say. But I'm working on disciplining myself.

I go like this:

Name :Ife-Eco-06
School attended: OAU

STANDARD OF RATING-Nigeria
Academics: 90%---Ife students are known for standing out, academically.
Sport: 60%--- Produced the likes of Soji Fasuba,Olumide Oyedeji etc, but just a-little-above-average performance in NUGA/WAUG games
Beauty: 98%---Unarguably Nigeria's leading university in terms of aesthetics.
Management: 65%--Managing a school like Ife, with all the ASUU,NASU,SUG radicalism, could be a herculean task. But the mgt are trying in the face of this.
Popularity : 98%--- who doesn't know Ife in Nigeria? Even in the core North where I served,Ife was well known
Academic calender speed : 40%---Here, I believe 75% is the normal speed. So if a Unilorin person comes here and gives his/her school 100%( That's overspeeding)
Growth: 75%--Ife is a little bit conservative, 'socialist'. Most govts neglect it. So this affected its growth potential. But the current VC, Faborode, is demystifying this

AVERAGE GRADE
: 75.14%
COMMENT: Association apart, I believe Ife is a force to reckon with among Nigerian universities.

P.S: Definitely, different Ife grads/students will see things differently. So that's just my own opinion.

Business › Re: Top 5 Most Richest Nigerians by Jarus(m): 12:47pm On Sep 14, 2008
This is another topic I like to discuss. I ahve read about Nigerian's richest men in many newspapers, magazines and other publications:
All the publications are unanimous that Dangote is the richest Nigerian, followed by Adenuga. Only Dangote appears in Forbes magazine's(a US magazine) 1000 richest men in the world. He was rated 313th in the world,7th in Africa and 1st in Nigeria.
Dangote is almost twice as rich as the Adenuga, number two.

Reliable publications in Nigeria puts the order like this:
1,Dangote
2,Adenuga
3,Femi Otedola
4,Jim Ovia(Know Jim Ovia and FO share 3rd and 4th places,but can't remember who is 3rd and who's 4th)
I can't recall the order of the other men that made the top 10 but vivdly remember Okoya,Folawiyo,Igbinedion Snr,Oba Otudeko, this Ibo man that invested heavily in stocks(can't recall his name) are in top 10.

Notes:
1,Jimoh Ibrahim is overrated, not yet in top 10 in Nigeria. No publication has put him in top 10 in Nigeria.Finance his business majorly by loans. He only talks too much, unlike Dangote and Adenuga.
2,I'm still trying to understand why many publications put Jim Ovia as no 3. Does he have more than Zenith Bank and lately Visafone. I learnt he's building a university now. I'm always surprised seeing these publications rate him that high, but i atke their opinion because i believe they know more, and they would have done some research before publishing the list.
3,Honourable mention to Chief Kase Lawal, the Ibadan-born Texas-based oil-magnate and second biggest black entrepreneur in US. Ditto for Deinde Fernandez.I think the list published are for Nigerians based in Nigeria, because I think Kase Lawal and Fernandez will fight for no 2 spot with Adenuga, if they are based in Nigeria.
4, The oft-quoted report that BBC published a list of richest people in the world, and Harry Akande was no 7 in the world, and Fernandez no 19, was nothing but a fallacy. The Punch reported the story in 2000, saying they got it from BBC. But the next day, BBC refuted the story. But people never read the refutation. I'm still surprised that people still quote that Punch report till today, even though BBC(Punch's acclaimed source) has refuted the story the next day.
5,I have excluded the Generals and the politicians because their wealth are not as verifiable as these businessmen's. Many reports also don't consider them.

Nigerians rich list

Dangote
Listed two years consecutively as Nigeria's richest man, his net worth in 2005 was $1.6 billion, and $4billion in 2006, now he's valued at $8billion in 2007.

The chairman of Dangote group, a conglomeration that manufactures everything from cement to sugar is the biggest private employer of labour in Nigeria with over 25, 000 employees.

He is today said to be ranked on the top 20 richest men in the world.

He has an all-glass and granite house in Victoria Island, a yacht, two private jets and many choice properties.

The Kano-born businessman is married with kids

Billionnaire Mike Adenuga

He is the Chairman of the Globacom Limited, Otunba Mike Adenuga, and may have relocated to London late last year. Most rich and influential Nigerians own houses at the avenue.
“Mike Adenuga is a serious businessman, who is pursuing his business in a way that is no Nigerian had done before. He is doing his best to contribute to the development and progress of this country.

Billionnaire Tony Elumelu
Mr. Tony O. Elumelu, MFR, is the chief executive officer of the Nigeria-based United Bank for Africa headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria. Elumelu was recently named the winner of the African Business Leader for 2006 for his ebullient contribution to African renaissance and economic development.
He is an efficient and a stalwart banker, a scholar of free enterprise and devoted capitalist. “A research economist with honors degrees at both graduate and post graduate levels in Economics. Tony obtained additional academic exposures from the Harvard Business School, USA and the Institute of Management Development (IMD) Lausanne, Switzerland.
His banking / financial career spans close to two decades and has seen him work in virtually all areas of banking. He was appointed MD/CEO of Standard Trust Bank Plc in 1997, a position he held till the successful completion of its merger with United Bank for Africa Plc in August 2005. He was recently appointed Group Managing Director/Chief Executive.
In the private sector, he is a founding Director of Transnational Corporation Plc and a member of the governing council of the Financial Institutions Training Center. He is also the President of the West African Bankers' Association (Nigerian chapter) and Vice Chairman of Standard Trust Bank (Ghana) Limited.

Chief Bayo Kuku
While some people excel in academics, some do in business, but this multi-faceted tycoon has been able to accomplish both. With luck and hard work, he has been able to attain an enviable height on the nation's economic terrain. But out of a characteristic humility, he refuses to flaunt his wealth and achievements. Instead, he maintains a low profile. However loud or intriguing the name Bayo Kuku might sound to you, the truth is that he has affected far too many lives to be ignored.

In spite of his philanthropy, the Ogbeni-Oja of Ijebuland, Chief Bayo Kuku has religiously held on to his slogan of "living a life of moderation".

Royal and majestic are the best words to describe his homes in Lagos and Ijebu-Ode. And for those who have been opportuned to have a glimpse into Chief Kuku's Ikoyi residence located on old Waring Road, since renamed after him as Bayo Kuku Road, you'D marvel at the luxury of his taste. Chief Kuku has been around for decades, yet his wealth and energy haven't waned a bit. He can compete favourably with today's emerging billionaires.

Otunba Olasubomi Balogun
Otunba Subomi Balogun who is regarded as one of the foremost bankers in Nigeria today having established the first indigenous bank, doesn't need introduction. Born in Ijebu-Ode Ogun state, Otunba, as he is fondly called, read law in England and happens to be the first Nigerian to receive special training in Legal Drafting. He is a trained lawyer whose tremendous success in the financial sector has since overshadowed his law profession.

In 1982, he founded the First City Merchant Bank (FCMB). After 18 years of unbroken success as a merchant bank, FCMB widened its doors to retail customers in January 2001 and adopted universal banking. The bank has since changed its name to First City Monument Bank and is one of the leading post-consolidation banks in Nigeria today. There is no doubt that today he is a man with plenty of cash. His eye popping edifice in both Lagos and Ijebu-Ode, his home town, further confirm his style and taste as a man of means. Otunba's case is that of an old money mixed with new money that continues to wax stronger.
I agree with you for the first two, but disagree with you on the last two. Bayo Kuku and Subomi are definitely super rich but definitely not up to making Top 5. They are in the same class with the Folawiyos and Okoyas, but I doubt if they are as rich as them. This is the first place I'll be seeing Tony Elumelu listed among Nigeria's richest. He's not even the richest banker. It is an open truth that Jim Ovia is the richest banker in Nigeria and I'm sure Tony himself will tell you that. Even, rich as Ovia is, I'm still trying to understand why he's rated the country's no 4(I don't know his business interests other than Zenith bank and Visafone), not to talk of Tony Elumelu.

Quote from: DeepZone on September 12, 2008, 08:13 PM
What made bayo Kuku a billionaire? His joint ownership to EKO hospital?
Another reason why I disagree that Deepzone is among the top analysts in politics section of nairaland. Not versed enough!
Sony Folorunsho Kuku, not Bayo Kuku, jointly owns Eko Hospital. They belong to the same Kuku dynasty in Ijebu.

Jimoh Ibrahim
Tony Ezenna(Orange Drugs)
Aliko Dangote(Dan Nigeria)
Mike Adenuga(GLO)
Orji Uzor Kalu
Cosmas Maduka(coscharis)

Bankers that are richer than Elumelu are:
Mike adenuga
Pascal Chukudozie
Jim Oviah

Remove Dangote and Adenuga from that list. Those were people that their bank accounts were stuffed with government stolen money. Their system is not how millionaires are made.
Haba, let's be fair to these men. Where are the government money they stole. You can say they influenced govt policy to favour them, but to say they stole money, it's unfair. Did they hold any post? Tell me a contract they were given? These men are pure businessmen and living examples of astute businessmen. The fact is that when you become rich to an extent, you dine with the presidents and top government officials, and become so influential to influence govt economic policy. It is recognised in Economics and it is called POLITICAL ECONOMY.That is a product of capitalism. The truth is that these men made their money before getting to the extent of becoming so influential enough to dine with govt, and of course, become richer. This is the practice in all capitalist sytems, and Us in particular.
I laugh at times when I hear some uninformed 'analysts' say its glo that made Adenuga or it's OBJ that made Dangote. It can't be the Adenuga I had known since 1991, when at just 38 years, won oil license along with 10 other well established billionaires then(Abiola,Folawiyo,Arisekola, can't recall the others but I think late haruna Abubakar was also there). Adenuga had been a Multi-Millionaire(if not billionaire) since late eighties, in his mid-thirties.So if you heard about Adenuga when glo came up, then you were not a follower of Nigerian economy since the eighties. I first knew Dangote in 1996. And he had also been rich for a while, even though his licence to import rice, during Abacha regime, people have argued, shot up his wealth. But if he was not rich to the extent of meeting the president, he wouldn't have secured such licence in the first place.

FYI, Niyi(Adenuga) was once a cab driver in UK, while schooling, while Dangote came to Lagos with just 500,000, given to him by his maternal grandfather Alhaji Aminu Dantata(then reputed to be Nigeria's richest man at that time, before Henry Fajemirokun surfaced in the late 1970s, and Abiola in eighties to mid-nineties).

So the summary is that, while not denying the fact that they became richer by befriending the presidents, Dangote and Mike were already made-billionaires, that got their wealth from their businesses. You have to be rich to certain extent before you can parley with govt in the first place. It is also almost impossible that people that are that rich stay neutral, politically. A single unfavourable policy can make them lose the billions they had got from hardwork. We call it POLITICAL ECONOMY.

Politics › As Gap Closes, What Made Obama Is Gradually Unmaking Him! by Jarus(op): 3:52pm On Sep 11, 2008
Even at the time when the Obama ovation was loudest, polls put his chance at 47-43. Then, many insightful analysts and informed watchers of the situation were worried that Obama ought to have surpassed that, given the shout about his name. We had all hoped the situation will improve, and more of the UNDECIDED people will soon pitch tent with Obama.

But like the law of dimishing return, while the Obama talk continued to rage all over the world, his chance among the real eligible voters, according to subsequent polls, has been heading downwards. The gap continues to reduce by the day. With more and more voters declaring their choice, the latest poll puts Obama's chance at 47-46, though Obama still leads.

For the first time, Mccain now leads Obama in an important voters bloc WHITE WOMEN, by a far margin of 53-42. Obama was leading here before.

One Director in my office and a diehard Obamaist, entered office yesterday lamenting Obama's outbursts in recent time. I agree with his analysis.
Oratorial prowess made Obama, but he's now overdoing this talk thing, and has begun to work against him. Granted that campaign is about talking, but Obama should have focused more on discussing issues rather than discussiing personalities. The republicans started the personality talk, we all know, but some of us think Obama should have continued to talk more about issues and ignore the personality card being played by opposition. He's now answering them and even going too far. The statement he made two days ago that McCAIN/PALIN are not MAVERICKS as they claimed was unnecessary. If McCain/Palin say they are MAVERICK and a departure from Bush's style, Obama should have left them. Also Obama recently took a swipe at McCain/Palin for claiming his mantra,CHANGE, as if he is patented to use it. And this is a country where every sentence made by a candidate is crucial. The republicans, though started the politics of personality, have now retreated to the defensive, making points, and solid defensive arguments capable of winning sympathy, out of all the Obama vituperations. And the strategy iseems working!

Obama's chance is seriously in danger. The guy is now overdoing his talk thing and gradually derailing. I only pity the black Americans, who may never come close to presidency again in the next two decades if this chance is missed. A black has to be ten times better than his white counterpart before they become match. Obama is ten times better than McCain. And that is why they are on the same plane now. If Obama fluffs this chance, getting another black as Obama, ten times better than his white opponent, maybe the blacks have to wait for another 20 years!!!!

Not in Ife. There are more students of Ogun, Ondo and Ekiti origin than Osun, the host state.

Once you meet the cut-off, you will get the admission even if you are from Kebbi state.

But if you don't meet the cut-off, then other factors may come in, like knowing lecturer etc.

The SA guy admitted Nigeria's superiority and very few people would do that, but couldn't come to reality, so had to blame 'spell'.

Please spell hardly works in football. The superior, and sometimes the lucky side, wins. But in this case superiority, not luck, explains Nigeria's dominance over SA.

Too bad SA will not be going to Nations cup. Nations cup for that matter. I don't think Nigerian football can go that down. Pick 11 boys from the street of Lagos and they will qualify for nations cup.

DeepZone:
You really want me to write a rebuttal for these calves?
Stop the redherring, disprove this:
1,Arabic Inscription on the Naira: This was actually done during the regime of Gen. Yakubu Gowon -a Christan (North) as there is no evidence that the naira was changed during the regime of MM
I'm still waiting, six days after.

@ Deepzone and David,

Before you go any further on the loan condition, recipient nations should not necessarily be an Islamic state . If I had created any other impression, then Accept my apologies.

Lets see your point on MM @Deepzone

1,Arabic Inscription on the Naira: This was actually done during the regime of Gen. Yakubu Gowon -a Christan (North) as there is no evidence that the naira was changed during the regime of MM

2,OIC Membership: All available records show that Nigeria became a member state during the regime of Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo -a Christan (South). As Deepzone had earlier said, even if it was MM intention as far as he did not lead us there at that point in time you can not hang him on this.

Let us not forget that the polity of the World at that time allowed Obasanjo to lean towards Pan Africanism and to see it through it will associate with any thing that is against aparthied that is why World bank and its likes may not have been an option for us then. The . the nationalisation policy is one major decision taken then to show case pan Africanism (BP = AP)

If you do have more facts do bring it on

On MMIA: Well we do have to look at all monuments named after all known names and view it from allegations against them (You will be luck if we will ever name anything after anyone as all hands seems soiled)[/b]

1,So desperate to find MM's fault was Deepzone that she did not do her research well before coming up with something to 'back' her hatred for this man. If your intention is not borne out of hatred for this man because of his tribe & religion, I challenge you to disprove the boldened sentence.

2, I know you will want to disprove this(no 2)by saying OBJ, Musa Yar'adua,TY Danjuma were MM's boys, that they only implemented MM's idea. But for the first point, I know you can't tell me Gowon was MM's boy.

Please girl, when next you want to dress your subjective dislike for somebody on some 'objective' reasons, do deeper research.
Five days after, still expecting a rebuttal from Deepzone!
