The long-asked question of: If EFCC is not out to witchhunt Obasanjo's political foes, why haven't they tried Bode George over NPA? has been answered. http://www.dailytrust.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=15868&Itemid=238 |
Nigeria 0 Holland 0 dyabman: dyabman:Have the pessimists gone into hiding? |
Not a bad result really, given the pre-tournament hype about the star-studded Dutch team. But they could have done better. Several goal chances missed. Our attack not sharp enough. The group is still open, with the pre-tournament group underdog USA beating Japan. |
Other than England, Brazil, Spain, Australia, and France, just few other countries has more players in EPL than Nigeria. Of course, the country has the largest Affrican exports. I have attempted to form a Nigeria-EPL 11. Anichebe (Everton) --------------- Shittu Yobo Babayaro (Bolton) (Everton) (Portsmouth) Olofinjana (Stoke City) Utaka Yakubu (Portsmouth) Mikel (Everton)) (Chelsea) Kanu (Portsmouth) Martins (Newcastle) I did not consider players of Nigerian origin but who have decided not to play for Nigeria like Agbonlahor, Onuoha,Shola Amoebi,Adebayor, and the now-begging-to-play-for-Nigeria Carlton Cole. I put Anichebe in post. Funny, isn't it? He's burly. Let him use his body and strength to man the post for us. Unfortunately, we don't have anybody to play right back for us. That Man-City guy would have been there but he has decided not to play for Nigeria. |
Jazakumullahu khaeran. May Allah guide him aright and make him to see and follow the truth. Islam and Christianity are and cannot be the same thing. This is a serious deviation. Our own God does not have a 'son'. |
Vetiva pays heavily, but you will work out of your skin. I was there temporarily for my Pre-NYSC job. I was in their Corporate Finance Division and I used to close too late for my liking. They keep a small staff strength of just about 30. They hold their annual retreat abroad. China in 2006, Dubai in 2007 and S/Africa in 2008 and they went with all their staff. For pre-NYSC I was receiving just 50,000 but with what I saw permanent staff(entry level) will not go home with less than 200,000 per month and with your 2 years experience, expect between 250,000-300,000 if not more. But l must confess all their staff are living very comfortably, making cool money. You know as an investment banking institution they have great access to market info and monitor their stocks, making cool money. Furthermore, I think they have a great bonus policy. Those small guys are just rich, almost all staff using Prado jeep. But you will work oooo, and learn as well. |
ritchboy:Yes, regarded almost unanimously the world over. oya, let's see: A couple of years ago was 2006/2007, abi. In 2006, Henry was not only battling injury but had also dipped in form. Sheva is out of it because Drogba was outshining him week in, week out and Mourinho had to finally consign him to bench for Drogba. Eto'o? Injury cut his form short. Ruud? Making some impacts at Real then but not much impact at Europe. Toni-Yes, banging goals for Fiorentina but not beyond Serie A because his club didn't play in Europe. DROGBA-Painting Europe and premiership red with goals at a time Chelsea as a team didn't have the best of season. Chelsea signed Sheva and Ballack and a lot of people had expected a great season for Chelsea but contrary to expectation, it was Drogba(and Essien) carrying them, outclassed Sheva. Haba, almost every informed football follower agreed Drogba was the world's hottest at that time. |
I believe the Dutch, despite the quality of players in their team, are beatable by Siasia's boys. These boys have a history of hard-fighting and Never-say-Die. Predict outcome? Hmmmmmmm, Balanced game, draw up to dying minutes and Anichebe/Nsofor grabbing a last-gasp goal to seal victory for Naija. |
I'll advise you report and refund the money. You will feel more fulfilled and become a trusted person by your employers. |
I served in Sokoto March 2007-May 2008(plus 3 months extension). My Sokoto year will be one of the most interesting and adventurous period in my life if I write my autobiography. The good happened, the interesting happened, and ugly also reared its head. Altogether, not a bad experience really. An article I wrote in The Sun newspaper about the Sokoto state Governor put me in trouble. I suddenly became the most popular corper in Sokoto state. From Rabah(a village of about 30km to Sokoto town), I was reposted to Gudu(near Niger republic, about one and half hours from Sokoto town) so that I will not have access to internet or come to town or read newspaper. Anyway, I stayed in Sokoto town throughout the fifteen months, just used to go Rabah/Gudu once in a while and the maximum days I spent in the village consecutively was 3 days. I just can't live where there is no internet or newspapers or phone network. I met the state commissioner for education and he told me the state governor did not believe I was not sponsored by opposition party(Bafarawa's DPP). I knew I would have extension and I had prepared my mind for it, so I was not traumatized when I was given 3-months extension. I just used the period to prepare for my ICAN, afterall I won't have such time in Lagos. And by God's grace, I not only passed my exams but also won FIRST PRIZE in the country in that diet. There were good sides as well. Making new friends among co-corpers and indigenes, living for the first time in an entirely different environment, tasting village life no matter how small, learning a new langusge etc. Nairalander LUV2TALK is one of the new friends I made in Sokoto state and we allways met in CYBERCAFE at Sokoto University City campus. I still call the state NYSC director as I don't have any grudge with him despite given me extension. I was told he has been posted to anothers state now. Pitiably, the only NYSC top staff that stood by me during my period of trial, Haruna Abubakar(NYSC PRO) died in an autocrash before I finished my extension. I wrote a 14-page article titled MY MARCH THROUGH THE CALIPHATE LAND:MEMOIR OF MY SERVICE YEAR EXPERIENCE IN SOKOTO STATE to narrate my experience in Sokoto state, but if I will describe my NYSC year in one word, I will have to roll a coin between ADVENTUROUS and ENLIGHTENING. Alhamdulilah, I'm now working in an oil company in Lagos. I'll still have plans to visit Sokoto and my village, maybe on one weekend(by flight of course, can't go that distance by road again). I'm somebody that easily becomes emotionally attached to anybody thas has helped me in the past. And I will one day go to Sokoto to visit my AI and Principal insha Allah. I really missed these people. They were very nice to me. SAI ANJUMA!!! |
We are just parading a bunch of average players that are not good enough to attract interest from big clubs, but Nigerians hate to hear this!!! |
I said this few hours ago:
Nigerians are the most sentimental set of people I have ever come across. In many Nigerians' reckoning, no other African players can be better than Nigerian players. Pitiably, when it later becomes glaring, they will tie the player's performance to 'playing in big club'.
Not surprisingly, this one is proving right: omodapson:But let me ask him: Didn't these good/big clubs see our so called world class players before going for Eto'o,Drogba and Weah? The reason is simple: Most of our players are only average and not exceptional enough to attract serious interest in big/good clubs like Barca,AC,Madrid,Chelsea etc. And for your information Drogba and Eto'o were already big stars in Marseille and Mallorca before signing for big clubs. There is just no hiding place for real great players, even if they play in Cyprus, these big clubs will fish them out and catch them-Luca Toni hit limelight as Fiorentina player,Shevchenko as Dynamo Kiev player,Ronaldo and Nisterooy as PSV players. If you are good enough to play for big clubs they will surely find you. Another question: National team apart, can Nigeria match CIV player for player? If Arsenal plays Chelsea, four Ivorians will be on field. CIV has players in Barca,Lyon and other big clubs and the highest Nigeria can table is Mikel of Chelsea. Kalou is enough to dwarf our representative, and Kalou will rank behind Drogba(Chelsea),Kolo (Arsenal),Yaya Toure(Barca),Kadri Keita(Lyon). Pls if they are deceiving us don't let us deceive ourselves. |
it still baffles me when people downplay rooneys abilities and his potential (considering the fact that he is still young and not using football age) rooney is without a shadow of a doubt, the best british player playing the game right now. lets leave emotions and club affiliations aside for a momment and watch that boy play, that boy is simply brilliant, a consumate proffesional and his ability to read the game is second to none. he just is not a very good finisher. afterall, he is a shadow striker
Haba, how can someone say Rooney is England's best? Where do you want to put Gerrard? dayokanu:Kanu is no doubt a fantastic player full of tricks and skills and appears refreshingly evergreen in the game. But let's compare the highest point in his career with that of Drogba: KANU:Granted he was Arsenal's rave of the moment in the 1999/2000 season, but recall he didn't score up to 15 goals. Won champions league with Ajax but he was not exceptional in that team, just a team member. Yes, wrecked Brazil in Atlanta '96(an age grade competition) and led Nigeria to victory-I agree he was exceptional there. Piloted Portsmouth to their first FA cup in over 70 years, by scoring a goal even my grandmother would have scored if she was in that position. DROGBA: Highest goal scorer in UEFA competition.Highest gola scorer in EPL 2006/2007 season. Like Kanu also delivered FA cup to Chelsea in 2007 netting in the final against Man-U. At Drogba's peak a couple of years ago, rated the world's best striker. Singly carried Chelsea at Chelsea's trying period(2006/2007 season). |
Nigerians are the most sentimental set of people I have ever come across. In many Nigerians' reckoning, no other African players can be better than Nigerian players. Pitiably, when it later becomes glaring, they will tie the player's performance to 'playing in big club'. Until a couple of years ago I had a friend that used to say Aghahowa was better than Eto'o. What an abuse of comparison! Till today, many Nigerians will tell you Eto'o and Drogba are not better than Martins. Their argument: Drogba and Eto'o play in big teams. Some people even say without Ronaldinho, no Eto'o. The last time a Nigerian won African FOtY was 1999(Kanu).For about nine years now the only Nigerian that came close to it was JJ(3rd in 2003 and 2004). But instead of Nigerians to admit that the era of Nigerian players as best in Africa has gone, they will be cursing CAF,Hayatou or the so-called Franco-phone gang-up. When Nigerians(Yekinni,Amuneke,Ikpeba, kanu) dominated the award between 1993 to 1999, Hayatou was still CAF President. Nobody raised an eyebrow. When Eto'o came of age and won the award three consecutive times(having won African Young POtY and runners-up several times before),and could have won it for the fourth time if not for injury, uninformed Nigerians started shouting Hayatou 'gave' it to him because he was his countryman. So annoying to me is this argument that anybody that tells me one single person can single-handedly give award to a player, loses my respect. I immediately consign such people to my list of armschair analysts, that do not deserve arguing with. For me, Eto'o deserved all the three awards he won. Gaskiya. The problem with many Nigerians is that other than premiership and few clubs in other leagues like Madrid,Barca,Inter,AC, and maybe Juve, they do not watch other clubs, especially the so-called small clubs. If anybody watched Eto'o at Real Mallorca and Drogba at Marseille, then he will not join the bandwagon of those that say Barca and Chelsea made these players. They were made before their move to these clubs. By the way, didn't Barca or Chelsea see Martins or Aghahowa before going for Eto'o and Drogba? Eto'o earned his first nomination for world player of the year(first list of 30) as a Mallorca player and Drogba as a Marseille player. At Mallorca, Eto'o specialized in wrecking big clubs especially Real Madrid(Uche seems to be taking over now) and Carlos will never forget in a hurry how Eto'o reduced him to amateur in the 2003 Kings club final, where he led Mallorca's humiliation of Madrid, tearing apart the much feared Madrid defence. So respected was Eto'o that the 'Dean' himself,Zidane, raised an alarm on how Eto'o made their taem look ordinary. He scored 17 goals against Madrid only in his spell in other clubs in Spain. In his last season as Mallorca, he had 19 goals to his credit and saved Mallorca from relegation. How can we also forget Eto'o performance at the Confederation cup of that year! Does anybody remember that Cameroun-Brazil match where Eto'o played first half of his Mallorca match, quickly flew to join his national team while the match was already on, came on for Cameroun in second half and delivered the goal that wrecked Brazil. That was vintage Eto'o. Bereaved Cameroun(due to Foe's death in semifinal aginst Colombia) only lost to France in final, courtesy of Henry's goal. A lot of Nigerians did not know this because this was not related to premiership, so I was not surprised when they opened their mouths and said Hayatou gave African FOtY 2003 to Eto'o instead of JJ. While JJ was also single-handedly and successfully helping Bolton fight relegation that season, Eto'o was doing excatly the same thing to Mallorca, but his edge over JJ came over his performance in Confederation cup, which Nigeria, and of course JJ, did not play, won him African player of the player 2003.All these were before his move to Barca. No Ronaldinho, no Deco behind him. At the end of that season Madrid regretted giving him out(being the team that discovered him at 16), and made frantic efforts to get him back, but Barca were smarter and landed him. I need not say anything about his performance at Barca. Who then says Eto'o lived on Ronaldinho? Who says Eto'o is not a world class player? Pls Nigerians let's be objective!!! I would have loved to give a comprehensive detail on Drogba, though less an achiever compared to Eto'o, but let me quickly remind you that Drogba at Marseille propelled his team to UEFA final in 2004, scoring in every game except final. He also emerged best player in French league that season and scored 19 goals. Is that not a world class performance? Who then is saying drogba has only one world class season at Chelsea? Who among Nigerina players has ever done that? Come on, let's be objective ! |
Refreshing! |
I think Ronaldinho's transfer to AC should top the list |
Dr Kitaun:I meant Anelka, not Kanoute. Just a sub-conscious mix-up. Kanoute definitely plays for Sevilla. Yes, I compared Mikel twice. First as a Chelsea player(Holding Midfielder) and second as a Super Eagles player(Central midfielder). Uche V Kalou? I stand by my word. To me they are in the same bracket. Was it not kalou that ran ring round all our defenders in Ghana? He is as good as Uche. |
I am used more to SPORTS,EDUCATION,ISLAM FOR MUSLIMS, JOBS and CAREER SECTIONS,so these are the popular Nairalanders by my reckoning: OLABOWALE: Very intelligent defender of Islam on Nairaland. Good presentations, logical arguments and silence on issues that doesn't concern him rather than post nonsense, very mature DAVIDYLAN: I know him for springing controversies every where AKOLA: Arguably the most respected soccer analyst in Sports section MUKINA2: I have never seen a lady this before. I never believed she was not a Nigerian. Good command of happenings in Nigeria. At home with almost every topic. One of the leading sports analyst on Nairaland. I would have doubted she there was internet in Gambia, if not for her. |
Nairaland bigsoccer hi5 nigeriafriends nanaija Most active in Nairaland. I contribute on bigsoccer too and go to hi5 and nigeriafriend a little often also. But the last one, it's like I was forced to join. |

This is why I said the term world class is most times loosely used. Many posters have already arguing the world-classness of some players here. I foresaw this divergent opinions, as it is common the world over, and that is why I came up with three categories of world class to accommodate players who are world class, when loosely defined, but will not be agreed as world class by many people.Any player for which two or more informed posters disagree he's a world class player can definitely not be in Class 1 WC.this is why no poster has so far(and no informed analyst should) disagreed that players like Ronaldo,Dinho,Bebeto,Zidane,Eto'o,Henry, weah etc are world class. Opinions ahve so far been divided on the world-classness of the likes of JJ,Kanu,Rooney, etc. In other words, they are ARGUABLY world class. Class 1 WC(the strictest definition) players are not subject to debate. That is why I'll put Kanu, JJ and Rooney as Class 2 world class players. Nigerians haba! I have seen people mention Ilerika,Chukwu,Odegbami etc as world class players. Please don't let us deceive ourselves like one of my Angolan forum-mate on BIGSOCCER that puts one unknown Akanga in Africa 11(just to have his coutry man in Africa 11). Odegbami and Ilerika,I learnt and read, were decent players, but please don't let us extend the definition of WC that far. Please, the loosest definition(Class 3) cannot even accommodate that. On Finidi,I'm beginning to consider putting him in Class 2 WCP too. I think it's true he was regarded(whether officially I don't know) as the best winger in the world(or was it Europe?) in the mid-1990's. Yes I can remember that time. I'm just hearing he was once ranked world's 7th best by FIFA. Making 7th position in FIFA world ranking, Nairalanders, is no mean feat. If that's true I think he deserves World class tag, but definitely not the strictest definition (class 1). Oliseh? What will I say? He was a very good player. World Class? Hmmmmmmmm Oh I remember I put Yak in class 3. Please I retract that. Oliseh deserves the WC tag than Yak. But I'll rather put both players in DECENT PLAYERS list. I remove Yak please. But I'm not replacing him with Oliseh. I don't want to go too loose. N.B. World class players are essentially fantastic but some players that are not regarded as WC are more fantastic than WC players. There is an element of informed sentiment, passion, in addition to global acceptability(even if it's blind) in this WC tag. So don't tell me one excellent player in Malta is WC when nobody knows him Although WC is very hard to define but I have hazard some criteria for determining WC player: Such a player: -Will make the First 14 (the usual starting 11 + the surest-to-come-on 3 on the bench) in any club in the world -Will make the first 14 of any national team in the world -Must be known and respected globally -Must have proved himself in any big league in the world, not local champion in Belgium,Norway etc) -Must have won or at least been nominated(not necessarily making the top 3) for any global award There are other criterias though. |
These agents of shaytaan will never succeed insha Allah, no matter the coloration of their plot. May Allah guide them!!! |
It is very hard to disagree that JJ and Kanu are not world class players, but the problem is can we put them in the same class with Ronaldinho, Zidane, Pele,Batistuta,Ronaldo,Romario? I don't think Okocha and Kanu can be in the same bracket with these players. So definitely, there has to be a lower class of world-classness, and that is where JJ and Kanu belong. So, I believe, they are world class, but in the strictest sense of the word I will hesitate before I call them world class players. Nobody will hesitate calling Eto'o world class, for example. He was once the highest goal scorer in La Liga, and second in the prior season. At Eto'o's peak few years ago there were global arguments on who the world's best striker was between him, Henry(then at Arsenal) and Shevchenko(at Ac then). He capped all those with the feat of being named world's third best that year. So Eto'o is a world class without any hesitation. That is the strictest sense of world-classness. 98% of football follwoers will also put Drogba in that exclusive class and virtually that percentage will also say the same thing about Essien. Ironically, JJ appears to be a better player than Essien but maybe because Essien plays more purposeful football than JJ. |
My analysis: The word 'world class' as it is used by informed football analysts is very hard to define but I will attempt to categorise the usage into three: CLASS 1 WORLD CLASS: Incontrovertibly, unarguably accepted by every informed analyst CLASS 2 WORLD CLASS: Almost glaring that they are world class but we will find few respected analysts that will disagree, with reasonable argument CLASS 3 WORLD CLASS Coaches and other analysts often call some players world class, although recklessly at times. Players respected coaches and/or analysts call world class but which many people will disagree fall under this category. I think Kanu and Okocha will make CLASS 2 WORLD CLASS category. Weah, Eto'o, Drogba and Essien are the only African players that can make the FIRST CATEGORY(INCONTRVERTIBLY ACCEPTED WORLD CLASS PLAYERS). Kanoute, M. Diarra, Kolo Toure, and few other African players will also make the SECOND CATEGORY. I think Mikel,Martins and Yak will also the THIRD CATEGORY. So Nigeria has no world class player in the real, professional, incontrovertible sense of the word but KANU and JJ are very close that exclusive list while Mikel,Martins and Yak can also be regarded as world class literally speaking. Opinions, approving or disproving, are welcome!!! |

This Davidylan has obviously become another thing on Nairaland. Perhaps the only reason he joined Nairaland was to launch an attack on the Muslims and anything Islamic. He was one of the most provocative posters in the ferocious MUSLIM-CHRISTIAN board before Seun decided to create a separate board for the two religions. Not done, davidylan has come to meet us in ISLAM FOR MUSLIMS board and is again springing controversies and provocations. I ask him: Must you post? Haba, are you ashamed? I never knew other people have also been observing you until I read the following replies, most of which are from your Christian brethren: Gonorrhea: nyabinghi: nazzyon:Mr David pls learn to think!!! Back to the topic in question, I do not see anything wrong in this having this topic under sports. It qualifies for both RELIGION and SPORT boards. I first read the story on BBC SPORTS websites; now, tell me, is BBC SPORTS a religious website? Since the personality in question is a sportsperson, the thread qualifies to stay here. Whoever does not like it should not open it.Gaskiya ne. Afterall, popular as threads like ARSENALS FANS SIGN IN HERE etc are I have never opened or posted in them because i'm not interested. So if it is not a must that davidylan and co open or post on this thread. |
This is pride. Even if he didn't commit the offence, he should still come up with something apologetic, because 90% of Nigerians see the excuses he gave for missing qualifying series as too flimsy. For example, in the all-important game against S/Africa in Abuja, he was told toarrive on, I think Monday, but he said he cannot arrive until tuesday, a day to the match, and Siasia frankly told him off not to bother coming if he can't arrive on Monday. The period was FIFA FREE PERIOD and almost all Chelsea players were with their national teams playing for their countries. Taiwo and Anichebe all arrived early for that match. So what is Mikel saying! |
I'M ALSO EAGER TO SEE ICAN RELEASE OUR RESULTS OOO!!!! I CHECK THEIR WEBSITE PRACTICALLY EVERY THREE HOURS, NOTHING YET. I EXPECTED IT THIS WEEK BUT THE WEEK HAS RUN OUT NOW, NOTHING!!! |
