berem: Expect More Power Cuts, Minister Tells Nigerians

The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, on Wednesday said there would be more power cuts in the days ahead due to ongoing maintenance works on installations across the country.

Nebo, while explaining why there was a sharp drop in power supply at a briefing in Abuja, said the country lost 1,112 megawatts of generated electricity in two days due to the shutdown of the Chevron gas plant.

He said, "A few days ago, precisely last week Friday, Chevron shut down its gas plant for maintenance purposes, which was to take place between Friday and Saturday. And the technical crew in the power sector knew about the shutdown and this was in order to make sure that damages are not done before losing the gas entirely.

"From time to time, there is going to be shutdown and it happened two times recently between Benin and Osogbo. If you don't shut down these plants in order to have a safe restarting process, you are going to lose the equipment. Once routine maintenance is done, the process of restarting the machines that were shut down takes some time."

He said two power stations were affected by the recent shutdown, stressing that the oil company and the ministry's technicians had to maintain the plants.

The minister added, "That is why between two and three days, we lost some 1,112MW. That means Omotoso and Olorunsogo plants were forced to shut down because there was no gas supply. By design, Chevron has to maintain the gas pipelines and it was so.

"You will notice that from Monday, we started seeing some increase that has stabilised. Right now, we have over 3,300MW."

Nebo gave an assurance that occasional system failures would be addressed.

He said, "With regards to occasional system failures, we are in the process of reviving the huge section of the transmission machinery, especially the lines that are aged, failing, dilapidated and in need of replacement. We are working on that.

"And for that reason, whenever a significant part of the transmission network encounters serious technical problems, you will experience system shutdown. And whenever you have a serious problem, you must shut down in order to make sure that the system is not overloaded at one end and create problems throughout the entire country."

The PUNCH had exclusively reported on Wednesday that the nation had witnessed a significant drop in power generation from a peak of 4,517MW attained on December 21, 2012 to 3,443MW on Tuesday.

The 1,074MW drop is, however, a slight improvement on the 2,987.6MW peak generation recorded on April 6, 2013, when a whopping 1,529.4MW was lost.

The minister also said that the meeting with labour unions in the power sector over workers' final entitlements had been cordial and that very soon, private investors would take over the power companies they bid for.

He also said the issue with Manitoba Hydro International over the management contract for the Transmission Company of Nigeria had been resolved, stressing that the transmission infrastructure had received a boost.

"Manitoba has received the schedule of delegated authority and most issues in the sector have been resolved," Nebo added.

this is not entirely a matter of self-respect. if he refuses the job will you provide for him and his family? for your info he is a senior and respected member of the 'big' football family in Nigeria and Africa. it is part of the job of coaching to be sacked and recalled as the occasions demand. that shows his stuff as a good coach. That's the only career work the guy have at hand now - FOOTBALL COACHING. the local league is not strong enough to be attractive to the 'big' coaches like him. so they depend on the national teams for contracts and compete with the younger coaches for same. he may not like coaching outside Nigeria too. what else and where else do you want him to work? he may not be willing and able to change a career now. he is gradually moving towards retirement.

Ikanium: Years past various Nigerian pastors have been connected with one scandal or the other ranging from money fraud, diversion of church money, acquiring of properties worth billions of naira and rituals among others.

But never have I heard or seen any of such with the Pastor/overseer of the Deeper Life Bible Church.

With this one could jump into the conclusion that Pastor W.F Kumuyi is the truest and the most trust worthy among his mates?
I hope you are not being deliberately mischievous in asking this question by qualifying it with "ONLY". i would have disregarded your deliberate ignorance of the number and quality of Pastors/Overseers in Nigeria; North-South-East-West. whatever criteria you use, and want your respondents to use, i doubt you will arrive at the answer your question is insinuating.

Pastor W. F. Kumuyi is no doubt a popular Pastor who has not been associated with a major scandal. if honesty is measured by open scandals, then there are thousands and thousands of Pastors who will pass this test conveniently. note that Deeper life is not the oldest church in Nigeria. There are churches which have existed for over a century with no record of any scandal.

i have not been in touch with W. F. Kumuyi, but i'm sure he will not like to associate himself with the title you are trying to ascribe to him here, "the only honest Pastor/Overseer in Nigeria".

more so, church leadership is spiritual, and can not be measured by media scandals or perceptions. so please be careful in dealing with spiritual matters in social media/networks.

Ayorh4you: This is absolute madness! I can see BokoHaram is winning the battle to islamize Naija. The federal government wants to join in bringing/training up future bokoharamist abihuh I had better packed ma belongings and relocate to Benin Republic.
Watzhup: If i may ask, what is the real meaning of Almajiri
ALMAJIRI IS SIMPLY A MOSLEM SCHOLAR. its a islamic theological school. AT GRADUATING THE SCHOLAR IS QUALIFIED AS 'MALLAM', A MOSLEM TEACHER. it is purely a religious affair. just like the bible theology schools we have around.

By recognising 'almajiri schools', GEJ has breached section 10 of the Nigerian constitution (1999) which states clearly that "The Government of the Federation or of a State shall not adopt any religion as State Religion".

By adopting ALMAJIRI SCHOOLS and spending unbudgeted national resoureces on it, GEJ has adopted islam as a state religion. THIS IS AN IMPEACHABLE OFFENCE. QOUTE ME ANY WHERE. we only have ignoble heartless looters on the assembly who are calling themselves legislators otherwise no president should indulge in this rubbish and go free.

who is gej trying hard, and unsucessfully, to appease? ISLAM? TELL HIM HE CANT. A MILLION GEJs can never appease moslems.

its unfortunate for Nigeria to be saddled with the burden of unrealistic, spineless and confused leadership.

Jarus: Yeah, there are sentiments. For example, I see Algerian captain voting for Karim Benzema as no 1. That's clearly sentiment-driven. No sane football watcher would say Benzema was best player in the world in 2012. Messi, Ronaldo, Falcao, Iniesta, Xavi, all debatable, but Benzema, clearly nah. But I can see teh connection - Benzema has Algerian origin like the voter.

Also, I think contrary to his vote, Messi himself believes Ronaldo is one of the top 3 players in the world. Same for the guy that voted for Portugal. He can't tell me he sincerely believed Messi wasnt among top 3 players in the world, but he left him out to reduce his chance.

But overall, I think the voting is diverse enough to reflect true best player. The few sentiments-driven couldn't have made much difference, especially since teh difference between winner and 1st runner up is so wide.
the voting process -aided by the points method - actually cancelled the sentimentally skewed votes. the end results reflects the popular opinion, which is what fifa is looking for.

paying derivation to communities is recipe for disaster. we dont want wars among brothers at the community level.

chino24: The Federal Government has announced plans to construct 10 new rail lines to cover other parts of the country currently not linked by rail.

The Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar, said on Friday that already feasibility studies had commenced on seven of the proposed railway lines.

Umar, who spoke in Lagos at the inauguration of the Lagos-Kano train service and resumption of fuel haulage by train from Lagos to Offa, said that the feasibility studies on three other planned rail lines would be done in 2013.

The minister inaugurated the Lagos-Kano train, while the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, represented by the Managing Director, LAMATA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, unveiled the fuel train.

He gave the total distance of the areas to be covered by the seven rail lines as 3,421 kilometres.

The minister said that at the completion of the feasibility studies, the railway development project would be undertaken through public private partnership arrangement.

“Upon final construction of these lines, it will improve mass movement of Nigerians and open windows for rapid economic development and regional integration,” he said.

Umar stressed that all the new rail lines would be constructed as standard gauge track for the movement of fast trains.

According to him, the new lines will cover Lagos-Sagamu-Ijebu Ode-Ore-Benin (300km); Benin-Agbor-Onitsha-Nnewi-Owerri-Aba, with additional line from Onitsha-Enugu-Abakaliki (500km).

It also included a 615km-high-speed rail track from Lagos to Abuja, passing through Lagos, Oshogbo and Baro.

The minister listed Ajaokuta (Eganyi) – Obajana – Jakura – Baro – Abuja, with additional line from Ajaokuta to Otukpo (533km); Zaria – Kaura Namoda – Sokoto –Illela- Birnin Koni (520km) as other areas to be covered.

Others are costal rail line linking Benin- Sapele-Warri-Yenogoa-Port Harcourt – Aba –Uyo-Akampa-Ikom-Obudu Cattle Ranch (673km); and Ajaokuta –Eganyi- Lokoja- Abaji –Abuja line (280km).

The other three lines, whose feasibility contracts would be awarded next year, are Port Harcourt-Umuahia-Enugu-Makurdi-Lafia-Kaduna-Bauchi-Gombe-Biu-Maiduguri; Ikom-Ogoja-Katsina Ala-Wukari-Jalingo-Yola-Maiduguri and Kani-Nguru-Gashua-Damaturu-Maiduguri-Gamborun-Ngala.

The minister also commented on the inaugurated Lagos-Kano line, saying the segment, which he described as the key to the development of the nation’s economy, “is vital to the start-off of the transformation of the Nigerian economy.”

He said the rehabilitation of the rail line, stretching 1,126km, was executed by two contractors, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (km 0-km 488) and Costain West Africa Plc (km 488).

Managing Director, Nigerian Railway Corporation, Mr. Adeseyi Sijuwade, said the rehabilitation project of the track and signalling system was awarded in 2009.

He said, “The opening of Lagos-Kano rail route will no doubt bring a lot of socio-economic benefits to the development of our nation, such as providing employment, enhancing trade and commerce within and outside our communities, as well as taking pressure off our overstressed roads thus reducing frequency of road accidents; it will also strengthen social integration and inter-cultural relationships.”

The NRC chief executive officer said the fuel train from Lagos to Offa had lifted 450,000 litres of diesel.

He said, “The return of freight service on the Lagos-Kano route will give ample opportunities to our numerous clients, such as Flour Mills, Lafarge Wapco Cement, Dangote Cement, Oando, Total, Sahara Energy, A-Z Oil and Inland Container Limited.”

YES ALL ARE CORRUPT!!! You need to know the meaning of corruption; the letter and the spirit. Any good english dictionary at your disposal will define corruption for you in clear terms

Those who think they are not corrupt, but keep quite in the face of corruption, for whatever reason, are equally corrupt. Those who keep quite while in office and talk like parrots against 'corruption' while out of office are also corrupt. Those who claim not to be corrupt but give way for corruption to thrive are corrupt as well.

I agree that the system is corrupt and entry into the corrupt system leaves one with dents of corruption.

BUT WE DON'T HAVE RECORD OF A NIGERIAN IN POSITION OF LEADERSHIP WHO HAS EVER RESIGNED HIS POSITION BECAUSE THE SYSTEM DID NOT ALLOW HIM TO MAINTAIN HIS HONESTY AND UPRIGHTNESS; OR WHO HAS RETURNED MONEY BACK TO THE STATE TREASURY BECAUSE IT COME TO HIM/HER ILLEGALLY (BECAUSE MOST OF THE MONEY THEY RECEIVE AS PERKS OR ALLOWANCES ARE ILLEGAL, THEY DEFINE THEIR CONDITIONS OF SERVICE DIFFERENT FROM THE STATUTORY ONES; NOT TO TALK OF BRIBES AND KICK BACKS), JUST LIKE SOME TAXI DRIVERS AND OTHER HONEST NIGERIANS HAVE ALWAYS DO.
