‘No Nigerian Law Determines How You Get Married’ – Yerima Speaks On Child Marriage
Former Zamfara State Governor, Senator Sani Yerima, speaks during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on May 10, 2022.
Former Zamfara State Governor and presidential aspirant under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Sani Yerima, on Tuesday on Tuesday said there is no Nigerian law that determines how and when one gets married.
Yerima stunned many Nigerians in 2009 by allegedly getting engaged to a 13-year-old Egyptian girl, paying $100,000 to the bride’s family.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the ex-governor defended his decision, saying he never did anything wrong.
According to him, there is no society in the country that has an age bracket before marriage can take place.
The senator explained that the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) which initially wanted to try him was forced to drop the case because he did nothing wrong.
“There is no law in Nigeria that determines when and how you get married. Muslims have Sharia, the Christians I don’t know what their doctrines say,” he said.
“If I had done anything wrong, I would have been tried in court. NAPTIP wanted to try the case and they dropped the matter because I didn’t do anything wrong.
“Whatever you are doing, if you are ignorant of the law, then you are bound to have problems. Once you do anything according to law, you don’t have a problem in any society.”
When asked if he would consider marrying a minor again, he neither replied in an affirmative nor negative tone.
Rather, he said that under Sharia law, there are some criteria that will be followed before any marriage would take place.
He insisted that his decisions would always be backed by the law as he would never be caught doing anything unlawful.
The APC chieftain promised to turn around the fortunes of Nigeria should he clinch the APC’s ticket ahead of the 2023 general elections.

"Att: Nigeria Custom @hqnigerianarmy
Yesterday, custom officer and Army officer along Benin/Agbor Expressway confidently assaulted our Human Rights volunteer and Special Assistant to Delta State Governor (Ombudsman), Mr Samson Nwachukwu @samchukx #EndImpunity
Our volunteer as expected never retaliated but endured the pain. We will protest this assault till the Authority discipline these men.
We are shutting down that expressway to demand for Justice. We want to know his crime.
I wish to express my displeasure at the physical assault meted on one of our own, the Director of intelligence/intervention, Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation and Special Assistant to Delta State Governor, Mr Samson Nwachukwu by some custom officers under the instructions of a rogue army officer. What a bummer!
This sad event occured along Benin/Agbor Expressway on the 7th of May, 2022 on his way to carry out his activities of daily living.
Its no surprise that he did not retaliate the slap on his face as a well groomed Nigerian under the siege of our foundation, Behind Bars Human Rights.
I suppose this has happened to so many other citizens whom are more or less helpless in such situations.
We will not handle this abuse on our own with kid's gloves as we request that the officers are fished out and arrested as we go through due process to ensure justice is served accordingly and offenders brought to book.
AS YOU WISH TO JOIN US DEMAND FOR JUSTICE, please find below details of Emergency solidarity meeting.

State Policing And Restructuring: Obasanjo Had Opportunity But Did Nothing - Adesina
Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of doing nothing about restructuring and security architecture of the country during his tenure, IGBERETV reports.
When the leadership of the National Association of Ex-local government chairmen in Nigeria paid Obasanjo a courtesy visit in Abeokuta on Wednesday April 19, the former President suggested that creation of state police would be a better option than community policing, following the widespread insecurity across the country.
Reacting to this in an interview on Channels Television, Adesina who admitted that Obasanjo has a right to hold a different opinion from what he held in the past, maintained that he (Obasanjo) had the opportunity to restructure the security architecture of the country but did nothing.
The presidential spokesperson said;
“Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has a right to hold a different opinion from what he held in the past but I recall that under him, restructuring of the federation was a key issue that Afenifere fought for, and then there was the issue of state police which also resonated loudly under him but he didn’t do anything in eight years. Like I said, he has a right to change his mind now but it doesn’t change the fact that he had the opportunity to do something about it and did not”.
During the interview, he was asked of the major challenge of President Buhari’s execution of the restructuring. Replying, Adesina explained that the executive is not the custodian of political will.
