CultureRe: Languages In Nigeria As Languages For Administration, Business And Education. by Jenifa1: 10:23pm On May 09, 2011
If you've visited Nigeria and travelled around out of Lagos, you would know that the majority of Nigerians cannot speak English fluently or properly, not even in the 'richer' south. The languages that are used most often are the native languages, even in English classes in state schools you may here native languages being used. There is no system to replace, rather, it is a question of how these languages can be promoted to official use in official situations so that native people who will never meet a foreigner for a job can understand what is written on their street signs, constitution, courts, ect. This is not how to make English disappear.
ah I see your point now.
I thought you are trying to get rid of english. then I would say that is a very wishful thinking.

congratulations to him. I wish him all the best with the UN
the man had become a political hostage in his own country for attempting to fight corruption.

he has joined the ranks of people like wole soyinka, achebe that are all serving  and contributing to foreign institutions because they are not welcome in their own home country

Nigeria will never learn.
we reject the good and embrace the bad leaders.

Lodging in a hotel in another country and watching your spouse swim in the hotel's pool does not indicate swag. It indicates relaxation. That was my point.

Don't worry, when you marry, you will understand that every hour is not meant for love and sex. You expect her to be beside me, reading Nairaland comments, instead of doing her own thing? Hahahahahaha!

You didn't make sense at all. He just told you to write "Igbo" and not "Ibo". Whatever you and your imaginary Igbo friends pronounce is none of our business as a forum like this takes only "writing" not "voice".

It is "IGBO". With the "GB". Like "AGBO". Even if you cannot pronounce properly, write it correctly.
True. Yet we write "YORUBA" properly.
It is easier for Yoruba people to pronounce "Igbo", than for Igbos to pronounce "Yoruba".
Following stress pattern, the stress is on "YOruba", hence the negligence of the "RUBA" sometimes. But for Igbo, the stress is on "iGBO", which makes the "GB" sound very clear, as in "aGBO", "GBEmiLEKE", "GBEnGA" etc, yet some Yorubas choose "BO", which according to them is how it is written in English.
Talking about English, an English man will never spell Yoruba as "Yoruba". Unless they are corrected, they will spell it as "Yorooba". "Roo" as in "Rookie", "Brook" etc

Nah, no insult intended. "Lion Scratches", as in "Big Tribal marks". I served in Ipokia Local Government of Ogun state. So, I know what I am talking about. I am talking out of what I saw.
It is "IGBO". With the "GB". Like "AGBO". Even if you cannot pronounce properly, write it correctly.
ok I see. it was meant to be a funny joke.

anyway, I think I know where the problem lays.

the spelling error is correlated to the pronounciation error IMO. so try to solve the pronouciation error (among yourselves) and the rest will fall into place.
like I said, most igbos I know call themselves ibo (in terms of pronunciation).

I also have a feeling that this has to do with some fragmentation within igbo society.
sometimes, I don't even know who's igbo and who's not. today, goodluck jonathan is claimed as igbo. tomorrow he is niger deltan.
I think you guys should figure things out among yourselves, come to a concensus and come back to us with a final decision on how you want us to pronounce your name/ identify you.

Trust me there is a lot of confusion about Igbo versus Ibo. I was taught in school to use Ibo, then I come on NL and people jump on me.
yeah I have a feeling they are confused among themselves and need to solve that first before coming to us.

Difficulty in pronunciation is definitely understandable. The fact that you spell and write it well is enough respect for Igbos already, and is well appreciated. Have no doubt that it will be reciprocated.
I don't have any difficulty pronouncing the gb. I just didn't realize it was pronounced that way. even my igbo friends pronounce it as ibo. I can positively say that I rarely hear igbo being pronounced with gb. even from igbos themselves!
or maybe they say it very subtly that I don't hear it?

and please ignore the buffoon

Well, now you know that it is Igbo and not "Ibo". If you use "Ibo" again, it will not be assumed to be a mistake, it will be an insult. Even You will not find it funny if someone keeps misspelling your name after being corrected several times. It will turn into a taunt than a mistake.
I always spell it as igbo but I pronounce it as ibo. I thought it was pronounced ibo
I think this is where the confusion comes from. d disparity between spelling and pronunciation.

to God, i didn't know that.

to be honest, most yorubas don't care much if you or white people misspell it as "yorooba". because we assume that it's a honest mistake. at most, we will correct it. but really nothing to be unnerving yourself about.

You may have a point there.
of course I do tongue

Men do the toughest jobs, and over 90% of workplace deaths are of men
.

instead of complaining about a tough job, give it to a woman. she will take it from you without batting an eyelid!!

anyway though, I kinda feel some of you guys' pain but seriously, you need to forget your ego. men and women are becoming increasingly on an equal footing. women are taking advantage of their newly found opportunity while d men are slacking.
ex. men don't want to become nurses or teachers because it's a woman's job but a woman will jump at a chance to do a "man's job"

Your mouth is too sharp. I do not have time for you. If women are allowed to hit men without men hitting back, then men are second-class citizens.
it's ok. i'm just competing with you since your own mouth sef was sharpened by gillette razor.

nobody said women are allowed to hit men. nobody should be hitting anybody. men or women
the big deal about men hitting women comes from the fact that 95% of the time, it's men who hit women. it's based on the statistical evidence.

Okay as many of you know, I am surrounded with dumb bimbos and sexually-starved akatas. I have come to cherish the intangibles in a potential partner. Things like having a good brain and a good heart now mean more to me than ever. I see some people exhibit these qualities on NL but I do not know if I will be physically attracted to them. But I am totally in love with the idea of a smart and kind woman that I just fall in love with certain online personalities. It is just crazy. I actually org.asm to the thought of a smart and kind woman. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it ok? Should I date a smart and kind woman even if I do not find her physically attractive?
yes you can fall in love with the idea of someone but that would be a very unfulfilling relationship. it's called limerance or crush. not really the best kind of love

for you, you should cultivate a friendship with a smart and kind woman and over time, if it's meant to be, you will grow to appreciate her physical appearance or at least the appearance won't matter anymore.
