all we can do is make the most of what we have. even if we start writing in igbo you know that it was the british who created the igbo writing system right? based on latin alphabet that the british inherited from their own colonizers lol so can u then say that igbo writing also perpetuates colonial mentality? |
udezue:you also have to be realistic. mugabe kicked white farmers off his country despite the fact that black farmers do not have the skills, resources etc to take over efficiently. we know d result of that. you can't just install a new system when you don't have something else to replace the old 'colonial' system with. it might just make things worse even though your motives are pure. yea you can have many official languages but you need one major one. esp for administration, education etc. if you have scholars and administrators writing in different languages, yes you will "preserve culture" how do you expect anything to be efficient or progressive? like i said earlier, many of those languages you mention above, if you study their history you will realize that they evolved over time. french was originally referred to as "vulgar latin" when they were conquered and became part of the roman empire. in the same way we have our own "pidgin english" as former colony of the british empire. and i'm sure those french people have their own original languages that have long died out or gotten incorporated into the pidgin latin that is called "French language" today. same way pidgin english incorporates yoruba, hausa, igbo etc. this is why i say pidgin english may be our official language in the future (many many many years from now of course). |
udezue:wishful thinking. look forward to your state becoming like many northern hausa states. disconnected and isolated from the globalized english speaking world, rampant illiteracy et al. |
Yield:thank you jare. |
even english, french, spanish, italian etc were all initially spoken as vernacular/pidgin variations of latin (roman empire) and over time have come to take on an identity of their own as these places became independent. that's my basis for stating that Nigerian pidgin may go the same route because as far as i'm concerned, so far as Nigeria stays together, we need a unifying language to communicate with. even if it means that yoruba, igbo etc will eventually die out as individual languages. pidgin will incorporate parts of all these languages anyway. |
3. A man can hit a woman in self-defense from verbal abuseso what do you tell the police? I smashed her head because she called me a liar? ![]() ok now this utter stupidity at its utmost. I now regret making a post on this foolish thread because you are definitely a lost cause. certainly your father must have been a wife beater. my advice to you: the best defense is self-discipline and composure. I hope you note that. |
of course a man can hit a woman in self-defense (if he is being attacked by a female robber, despoiler etc and his life, health is endangered) but the whole purpose of the taboo is to serve as a counter measure against the rampant rate of domestic violence against women in the world especially in third world countries (read: Africa etc). this violence is almost always perpetuated by men. SA for example, has the highest rate of forced violation in the world (1 in 3 women). even their current president is a despoiler talkless of domestic violence, beatings etc that women suffer. this violence is uncalled for. if you want to beat your sisters or wife and think there is no big deal it it, of course that's your own prerogative. but the churches, children, officials and other advocates who see these battered women on regular basis and handle these cases know the dangers that's why they condemn it. plus the violence is self-perpetuating because children watch and grow up to be wife/mother/women beaters and the cycle continues that's my 2 cents |
it's common among people living in Nigeria but I don't notice it among Nigerians in the US so it may have to do with the environment, hydration etc |
I think it's best to use English. if any other language is poised to become an official language, that will be pidgin. |
african1:lol no comment ![]() |
to illustrate my point, ex. you won't see Chimamanda Adichie giving up her last name anytime soon. at best, she will hyphenate it because her name is her professional identity. that is an extreme example but you get what I mean. |
Most women who hyphenate their names do it for professional reasons. esp if they marry later in life after they have accomplished so much. I don't see a reason why men should object to this. |
alright then. most african nations run that way anyway. from arap moi to gadaffi to mugabe. I guess that's the accepted african style of government. no opposition allowed |
Hrm. I'm starting to think that the democracy which you are used in the western world isn't quite appropriate for naija. Are there any other multi-ethnic states with no dominant group that has a properly functioning democracy? There are probably some examples here and there, but probably not that many.
so what's your point? we should abolish d two-party system and install a dictator? |
what an interesting topic. seems most Nigerians are actually against democracy. we would rather have a one party government. and have no tolerance for anyone who doesn't share in our beliefs. and we wonder why Nigeria is the way it is. |
kodewrita:good question. will he demolish the churches too? |
playmode:if all the nigerian elites combine the 60 billion naira and use it to invest in manufacturing armored cars, wouldn't life be better? the cars don't even have to be top quality but good enough is not bad. zstranger:and you obviously can't spot a rhetorical question when you see one. what a doofus |
lol, she actually has a boyfriend. In my opinion, her and her boyfriend look alike.
lol. that must be a funny looking guy then. |
you just listen to yourself why would any intelligent woman want to hang around you? |
or not attracted to OP |
lol. or maybe he's comfortably married. |
^ yea tons of men aren't making 6 figure salary and therefore are not husband material either. there is always someone for everyone. |
ilovelagos:they are friendly to foreigners. but don't be carried away by the friendliness. many will swindle you if you are not careful |
Intelligent girls are very common. you just happen to be attracting the dumb ones. move around more. |
But the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Adewole, said the demolition was part of his drive at preserving the original master-plan of the campus and freeing it of illegal structures.who is this dictator? did he do a survey of the school to ask the students if they would prefer the structure to remain? a leader's actions should be always based on his followers' needs and request. besides, the timing is very suspect. obviously an anti-islamic move. the last thing that should happen is for yoruba muslims and christians to turn against each other. |
the baby is BEYOOTIFUL. hopefully she looks better as she grows older. what's her name? |
yea bye. butt face ![]() |
ezeagu:anyways, I think we should stop. definitely not worth it as you have correctly pointed out. but plz stop the incessant whining. then maybe we won't be having this discussion. |
