KunleOshob:
Well I would assume Paul was talking within the construct of a culture that was intolerant to female leadership which is different from our culture today which is much more tolerant of it. That aside there is no indication Paul was giving a commandment from God rather he was talking from his position as a leader of the churches in question.
Very well said & I agree.
Hope you won't get tired of my furthering just yet though smiley . . . how would you encourage christians to go about seperating what applies to us today and what no longer applies? If that instruction was intended within a cultural context, how do we say what else in NT scripture was not meant to be projected for future generations?

Joagbaje,
Joagbaje:
Paul was not against women speaking in church, but because many of them were asking too many questions about the faith during services, Paul instructed they should not disturb the services but should ask their husbands at home. The second part has to do with women trying to lecture their husbands that they are usurping authority . They should not teach their husband "THE MAN" he didn't say they should not teach "A MAN" but "THE MAN" which makes reference to the husband.

The bible says women will prophesy (speaking or teaching the word of God in public) priscila the wife of acquila was both pastor and teacher.
Thanks for the response too. Can you also take a stab at the question I asked Kunle?

Just curious, how do you reconcile this with Paul's instruction against women pastors and speaking in church?

Enigma:
I am going to throw into the mix that we should even be cautious about criticising infant/child baptism; remember that Cornelius and his "household" were baptised and who is to say that the "household" did not include infants or children?
Good point. And I would counter that we readily see in scripture multitudes of examples of baptism candidates, and that they were not just those who were of age, but more importantly those who were of age and of understanding to comprehend what baptism was, why they ought to partake of it, and how they ought to approach it. Infants do not have the ability to grasp any of the above.

And let me throw this into the mix, what is the motivation for baptising an infant in the first place? (that is if you're not of the catholic persuation)

@jesoul
As a matter of policy women do not occupy leadership roles in my church even though they speak.
I'm not trying to be cheeky but the verse is very specific women must not speak at all. Might I solicit your opinion on this as well as how your church (if you know) justifies the permission of it? thanks.

Also note that the form and struture of early church gatherings is different to the form today.
Well noted and seconded.

Then it was more of a meeting were believers met to discuss the word and share meals together rather than the type we have today were only the pastor and chosen officials get to speak without any fellowship meals.
I also agree there has been massive deviation from the standard by modern churches - some of them bad and some I don't think are too bad.

You keep displaying your ignorance of scriptures, are you telling me that as a pastor you have not read in the book of corinthians and Timothy written by by Apostle Paul as well that women are not allowed to speak in church or hold positions of authority over men in church effectively barring women from pastorial office. What that means in effect is that Anita is holding her pastoral office illegally and her so called calling is a fraud against the church being aided and abetted by her equally notorious and fraudulent husband.
Kunle just a quick question.

Do women speak in your church?

Christianity EtcRe: Places Of Worship Should Be Held Responsible by JeSoul(f): 7:23pm On Nov 01, 2010
Chrisbenogor:
@Jesoul,
My dear, its so sad. Yes these places of worship just like any con man should be held responsible. Why do you hold someone responsible if they collect money under false pretense? In this case people's lives are at stake, and these people are vulnerable. I mean the law does not say hey you were silly to give the con man money,
The problem with that is that these 'pastors' are not breaking any laws. They promise spiritual gains in exchange for physical 'offerings' and people willingly (key word being willingly) submit to them. I do believe that morally they are accessories to murder. However, under the criminal/judicial system, you cannot prosecute morality. It's one thing if a person went to the doctor and the doctor lied or misdiagnosed - its quite another to go to a babalawo or "pastor" - we are not afforded the same legal protections under "spiritual institutions" versus secular, state-recognized and licensed ones. Religion is open for free practice, unfortunately, too many practice it to their own detriment instead of benefit.

I mean what is wrong for these big churches to have convention where they give away drugs and medical advice to a population who would be willing to listen?
Its sad, really sad.
I am with you - and many christians are with you too. There are churches out there doing such for their congregations. Its just too bad that the vast majority are only after money.

Dalby:
No I just wanted to know if we were instructed to do it
No the bibe does not instruct the dedication of infants. However, while the practice may not be spelled out in chapter and verse, it is based on biblical principles/examples. We see little children being brought to Jesus to pray for them and parents dedicating their children to Lord. You are presenting your child before the church and thanking God publicly for the precious gift and soliciting prayer from the congregation that that life will belong to the Lord. Ain't nuthin wrong with that.

However infant dedication must not be confused with infant baptism - the two are very very different, with the later appropriately drawing criticisms of being contra-biblical. Cheers.

Chris my friend, I am sorry for the pain you're going through and I know most people would sympathize strongly with what you're going through.

Should these 'places of worship' be held responsible? . . . how do you hold person A responsible for persons B's choices? People will always be deceived and taken advantage of, but no one can deceive or take advantage of you without your permission. As much as I share your disdain towards these charlatans, the blame falls on us.

I do however vehemently concur, it is our moral responsibility to save those around us we see falling if we can, especially our loved ones whom we can influence. I believe God will hold us accountable on that front. And as a collective group, the best we can do is continue to speak against these 'men of god' and hope that those who have ears will hear.

Dear Jesoul,
what happened to the shove it candidate in the polls after that statement? He crashed in the polls. I personally was on his side. He has a right to be angry, but he took it too far.
I agree he did infact take it too far. I wouldn't rely on all the 'polls' left and right. I know the media is sympathetic to Obama and will do as much as they can to spin things in his favor.

I really have no sympathy for Obama and the dems in this election( except darling pelosi)

democrats are spineless chickens. No one can campaign on thier policy, they all campaign on hating dear pelosi. All those blue dogs are fit for the gutters. One even claimed to vote for McCain in 2008. How can this activate thier base? Republicans are bold. They say what they want to do. Grid lock. No compromise. They are not scared. Rand Paul won't even criticise the stomping of a girl by his security, Joe millers security detains a journalist, no apologies. Florida democrat receives a text MSG during debate break time and FIRES the aid for breaking debate rules. Whom would you want to work for? Dem or Rep?
You really need to read the article Tayo posted. I hear what you're saying above, but down to the bare bones, is your main complaint against the Dems that they haven't been "leftist" enough?

I've secured my visa but I'm in no hu rry to go to US( may be Xmas to be wt family) , if GOP rules and cuts taxes here and there, I might as well hurry up wt my licence exams, get a job, and enjoy the tax cuts before voters get fed up wt the TP
The nation can never get "fed up" with the core of the TP values - "tax less - spend less". I may not identify in person with the TP but best believe I am 100% with that philosophy - and I believe majority of Americans who may not also identify in party-affiliation with the TP because of "politics" and not wanting to "labeled", also hold those core values. I believe so because to me, it is common sense.

I especially liked this part:
But one of the biggest reasons the Democrats are in the trouble they’re in right now is because of how frequently the Left and the media (one and the same, really) called anyone who opposed Obama a RAAACIST.  If you supported Hillary Clinton in the primaries instead of Obama, you were called a RAAACIST.
