I certainly appreciate your point Krayola - the current academic understanding or general concensus concerning past times is constantly changing, evolving, and what these fellas do is try to make estimations based on the current body of evidence.

You're forgetting something . . . Howard is a foul-attracting machine and Bigbaby knows how to play him just right to draw those. Baby doesn't have to do much posting up, he's good/quick with his feet and can shoot the 15ft jumper outside of the paint - that's his advantage when he comes off the bench. Perkins will as always do a solid job to start the game.

Do they really Kray? it is rarely the case - in my casual experience - that a scholar would go out of his way to put a big sign on his decades of study that "this is just a guess". I remember remarking to Max once a while back that a lot of this "historical" stuff, are really opinions paraded as facts.

Which would mean credible scholars are few and far between 

That is why one should be careful when people draw conclusions about individual's characters and motives, based on few verses from letters written two thousand years ago. Like I said, no credible scholarship will lead one to such superficial conclusions.

My caution is the same but of a different persuation -
-The scholar gives you an "educated" guess
-The average person gives you an experiential guess
       - The common denominator - they're all guessing
My bone of contention? why should anyone be basing or deriving their beliefs of "guesses"? whether educated or not? For purely academic reasons, that is certainly fine. And that's where you're coming from Krayola and hence fine. However, for far grander issues of faith and spirituality and God - guesses, especially someone elses, will and must not suffice for the seeker.
 

Scholarship, for the most part. tries to recreate the context. . . without context we have nothing. Picking a passage from here and there is ok for faith debates, theology. For historical study, u need tonnes more to get anything reliable.

I like this quote. Scholarship does definitely have its merits, it gives us a glimpse into the life and times of an era. Where it falls short, is giving us a glimpse into God or matters of the spirit.

Alas! we come to the realization that the this thread for the most part, is pure conjecture .

All that exists out there in Religious studies is for the most part based on "the best estimate" "the likely probability" "the most educated guess" etc etc and for every "the bible has been tampered with expert" you can find an equal and opposite "the bible is trustworthy expert".

My point Vesc? the same point I was trying to make few pages ago - you can search through all the religious texts in the world, and the subsequent exposition done on them by the most respected of scholars, research the latest expert findings, track which scrolls came from which newly unearthed caves, learn greek, learn aramaic, combine the two and decipher the true meanings behind biblical text etc etc etc . . .

  but I've found that its like trying to drill a hole in a rock quarry using a telescope. ^^^all of this, to me, is a chasing after the wind. How can my beliefs be based on the current best guess of some scholar? Knowledge, in the truest sense of the word, is an illusion and he who thinks he "knows" is under a self-induced spell. You made a comment a while back about "God gave us brains, I'm sure He expects us to use it". I agree 1000%. The problem with that approach is that Spiritual truths are not intellectually apprehended - but moreso in spirit and in truth. Your brain will not help you find God, your heart and spirit - searching in truth - is what will. I think this above all else is where the "academic champions" falter most.

oh and this is not to smack on our resident expert Krayola at all. Infact I do enjoy a lot of his posts and insight. Its always good to see things from a different angle and I'm just trying to show things from mine. Cheers!

  I daresay, it is possible. Chicago is definitely a better option than New York - as in team readiness to win - wise. But I doubt Lebron will want to build on MJ's legacy instead of making his own. That boy is staying in Cleveland. The only reason for NY is money, not championships. He already has money, it's about getting the one ring/bling money can't buy.

The reason I expected you to answer Krayola here is, I think, quite obvious - the gospels do not score higher than Pauline letters with the scholars. In fact, they are more controversial.

Maybe she's just a human being that has come to her own conclusions and it just so happens that Paul pops up anywhere she has a problem with the bible. Maybe she thinks there are mistakes and misleading or doctored information throughout the entire bible but she takes exception to Paul because she feels he's a self proclaimed prophet and the other apostles don't even call themselves that at all, so for a given misinformation, one will be error of judgement and the other will be deliberate propaganda. I hope I make sense.

I reckon with the strongest of reckonings - that after the dust settles from evaluations, and analyses, and re-evaluations, that I will always believe Jesus came and died for my sins. I believe it as strongly today as I did 10 clicks ago and as I will 100 clicks from now - if I'm still around .

Jesoul's well. And thankful for MyJoe today . Let me clarify. Cos I just realized my entries can be a tad confusing.

I have remarked over my NL life that every man's walk to God is unique. There is no one universal template that can be applied evenly across the board and will produce the same results. Case in point - we have drastically differing views on a single character Paul. I see a hero, Max sees a villian. Now when I say I cannot prove it - its because I can't and more importantly, I'm not even trying to. Because my proof - which is in my experiences - matters to only me. Is significant to only me. Cannot be bottled and reproduced for others to experience alike and hence believe alike. See the "Book of Eli" bit - I believe because I have had an experience (and continue to) and that is what fuels my faith to keep on believing. So I know, but only unto myself - does that make sense?

So Joe, I will not claim to "know". "Know" is a packed, loaded word and I do not know it all - not by any stretch of the imagination and I cannot dare present myself as an authority on spiritual matters that are ever so complex and are scarcely identical from one soul to another. Only God knows. Which is why I then proceeded to say "seek and ye shall find" from Him who truly knows.

One important assertion I want to strongly clamp down on is that "I believe because I was raised to" - indoctrination - nothing could be further from the truth. I believe because I had an experience as a child - this caused me to search and I found, and I have been holding on to the heart of what I found since then. Have there been tertiary beliefs I have let go and modified and gathered along the way? absolutely. I am a thinker and analyze everything - you have no idea. So if anyone thinks that I have not, do not and will not continue to critically think, soberly consider and humbly evaluate all that I believe - all the while weighing it all against the balance of faith - then such a soul is sorely mistaken - and I say that with the warmest of affection

Related to the musings above, it is noted that even Max did not respond to Krayola's question about the sources of Christ speak, since she rejects Paul's teachings on the basis of perceived differences between them and those of Christ. How do we know what Jesus taught which Paul is said to differ from? What Matthew, John and the others wrote. But Max does not know they reported Christ accurately such that they are to be used as yardstick for dismissing another "called" one, or does she? To put that differently, in the face of the well-known controversies surrounding the gospels how reasonable is it to hold them as standard for Paul? 

You know I was going to ask this very same thing of Max, but was just to lazy to do so. Thanks Joe. Max, I look forward to your response on this.
