In that last scene, which btw is a dream sequence (clue! clue!), kate and Jack are at center stage, no doubt.

However, what about all the other passengers who had drowned with the ship?
There's a deeper meaning here. wink
When they only devoted about 60 secs to all the other souls and focused on freezing jack for 1hr lol

btw, one of my main grouses with Titanic is the fate of the diamond. shocked That kind of romance, I dont like.
I was like what the hell when she threw it away . . . useless emtional sentiments that are highly impractical = 95% of romantic movies.

Didnt know about Cameron's personal issues, but isnt that the same thing that happened with Brad Pitt and Jolie? huh
Isn't that what they all do? kick it for 3-6 months, at most a yr. Switching partners like they switch underwear - disgusting. If only their actual lives could remotely mirror the fiction they put up in movies . . .

You're so right about Hollywood creating unrealistic expectations in the young and impressionable. Teen romances piss me off, especially when they make drugs sex and rock and roll cool and urbane. And I found it hysterical, when I was still dating, for some guy to walk me to my parents door, and then, cued by Hollywood, try and act the romantic star. I so get your objections to the genre.
I am trying so hard to imagine this Max  cheesy when you were dating? lol what happened? you found mr righty? & you're no longer 'testing the waters'? don't say you're married cos you don't sound like a married woman lol.

Nevertheless, there are some movies that are just an absolute masterpiece, like The English Patient, Crouching Tiger, Brokeback Mountain, As Good As It Gets, and some 50s and 60s romantic movies. I still love Sound of Music and Singin in the Rain and Breakfast at Tiffanys and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers lol. They don't make em like that no mo. Seen any one of those?
Nah haven't seen those. . . I'm rebelling remember? lol  Much like Daniel in the bible, I purposed in my heart long time ago I wasn't going to partake. Did see most of Brokeback tho . . . wanted to see what all the buzz was about.

As for Romantic flicks, Hitch was funny in some spots like you mentioned and Tpia you're right there are some truth to the underlying themes/messages. However overall, I find romantic movies to be superficial and unrealistic and I blame them for the head-in-the-clouds misguided expectations too many women carry around on their heads. Hence my sworn rebellion Max  cool

The ONLY genre you rebel against? You watch B movies and war movies and spaghetti westerns then? grin
Which one be "B movies" lol . . . war pictures are so-so, too depressing most times, spaghetti westerns? hehe depends on who's in it and if they can kill enough bad cowboys and train robbers and manage to remain likeable in the process.

Romantic movies . . . not my thing. The only genre I actively rebel against. Unrealistic, thoroughly fictitious made-up, unlikely-to-ever-happen fairy-tales that poison the minds of women and men everywhere. Exhibit A: Hitch, Exhibit B: 95% of 'black' movies.
I was forced to watch "The painted veil/love in a time of cholera" once starring Edward Norton and Watts. Was a good movie though.

Recognise,
my brotha you know I love you right?  smiley but I'm going to have to whip you if I see you . . . lol

Recognise:
You've gotta to flex that faith muscles to get to the point of big faith smiley

Yup its going to be slow but surely a gradually build up & ascent . . .

What need does the King of Glory, Self Sufficient GOD have for measly ten percentages (i.e. 10%) . . .

The earth is the LORD's and its fullness thereof, the world and all that dwell in it I hear you quote. . .

Hypocrites! grin Thou of little faith . . .

HINT 10% is the starting point . . .  grin

PS: No matter where you stand. OT Christian, NT Christian, OT&NT Christian . . . grin

You cant escape from training with a starting point of 10% . . .  wink grin
This is my problem with many pro-tithers. Are you somehow insinuating that those who don't tithe don't have "big faith"? and that we somehow are lacking in something tithers have attained?

And how did 10% become the "starting point"? for who? who's to say the "starting point" for another's choice to tithe is not 5%? or 1%? isn't this all about faith and not rules of engagement? what are all these rules and laws and "standards" some pro-tithers are again instituting upon christians when we have been freed from these rigid following of laws?

I choose not to tithe by faith! Because my faith frees me from a ritualistic, systematic, cyclic procedure of giving a certain amount - hence I give as I decide in my heart (2 Cor 9). Your faith frees you to adopt the systematic giving of 10% and there is nothing wrong with that! we all believe differently and that is okay (please read Romans 14).

what is wrong is when pro-tithers think themselves spiritually superior enough to project their own personal convictions on tithing to become the standard for other christians. This is wrong my brother, wrong.
Christianity EtcRe: Who Says Tithing Is Not New Testamental? by JeSoul(f): 9:03pm On Aug 20, 2009
Krayola2:
Jesus' original ministry had no such thing in it. "Tithing" was Paul's invention and it had to do with the realities of urban ministry. . . although it was never meant as a requirement for christians to give x% of their earnings or whateva is practiced today
Well not really. Tithes started with Abraham and was an OT law actually.
Hello Jeseoul. . .how nah?
O jare I dey. How were your exams? I hope you returned with an A+++, anything less will be unbecoming of a man of your calibre  smiley

OLAADEGBU:
Adrian Rogers of blessed memory had this to say:

"It is better to be divided in truth than to be united in error, it is better to speak truth that hurts and then heals than to speak a lie; it is better to be hated for telling the truth than to be loved for telling a lie; it is better to stand alone with truth than to be wrong with the multitude . . . The religion of today is 'get-along-ism.' It is time for men and women of God to stand,[even] if they have to stand alone."
Sounds nice and solid.

But how does that prove the "law/requirement" of tithing you've been advocating here? when there is clearly not a NT directive for today's christians.

Christianity EtcRe: Who Says Tithing Is Not New Testamental? by JeSoul(f): 7:56pm On Aug 20, 2009
I didn't want to comment on this over-flogged horse that has been debated uncountable times here on NL but I feel like there is scriptural dishonesty going on this thread. and Tonye I saw this thread and immediately thought to leave you to your convictions but since you've determined to project your own personal convictions on this matter of tithing unto other christians and declare that the standard for them as well - I decided to respond.

I had remarked to you once that it is possible for 2 christians to believe differently about something and both be right. Romans 14. And Paul's conclusion was that each man should be fully convinced in the faith about their choice. Which is why I am not sure why this matter is still being 'debated'.

Twist and misquote the scriptures all you want - There is no new testament directive for christians to tithe - infact there is no new testament directive for us to do anything outside of faith! there are no requirements, no laws, no rituals. There are a few portions that you can read & apply to mean the tithe is still relevant - to you - but another can also quote 2Cor 9:7 which says clearly "Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver"
  - and I despise it when people only quote the last portion that says God loves a cheerful giver without quoting the first part that says "Each man should decide in his heart what to give"

Now is it good to tithe by faith? Yes.
Is it good to not tithe by faith? Yes.
Is it good to tithe as if you were following a law and trying to fufill a requirement? No.
Is it a requirement for NT Christians? No.
Is it a choice based solely on faith? Yes.
Are those who tithe better, more spiritual than those who don't? No.
Are those who don't tithe necessarily stingy and greedy? big fat NO.

The bible does teach that if you give it will come back to you, and you will be blessed - but this is seperate from the issue of tithing. It is also sad and reprehensible pro-tithers label non-tithers as stingy and greedy and unwilling to give a "mere 10%" to God. This is condescending and reeks of spiritual superiority complex. Just because a christian doesn't tithe doesn't mean they don't give generously and in many cases even more than those who beat their chest as accomplished tithers.

No I don't tithe, but I give regularly and whenever I am able to, sometimes small, sometimes large. Not just to my local church, but to family, friends who may be in need, to the stranger, to the homeless man, to my 6 yr old neighbor, to the local charity etc. Does the church need finances to forward the gospel of Christ? absolutely! do churches need finances to run/operate? of course, and the staff must be taken care of by the congregation and Christians should give as much and as frequently as they can. But one who's persuaded to tithe must and should not look down on the one who doesn't.

You also forget that over 40m voted for the opposition and that is not a vocal minority. You shld also remember that there were those who voted him because of a tanking economy. If this were 1998 he would have had absolutely no chance.
True a lot of perfect 'coincidental' factors contributed to his victory. It would seem now that a lot of those who even voted for him - such as our very own Osisi - have changed their attitudes towards him once they've seen and in essence not liked his policies.

To be honest MSNBC too became so much of a pro-Obama mouthpiece that i decided it was better to go without cable TV and simply read the news.
Isn't it so sad how we no longer have true journalistic bodies/entities (save for a few bloggers) who seek to simply bring us the story and let us make up own own minds? They decide and report - this is leading to so much of the misinformation out there.

I dont think this is the same venom, Bush at least had 6 yrs to ruin the economy and plunge the US into 2 wars BEFORE this level of vilification. Obama is only in 6 months and so far has succeeded in turning around a tanking economy, is ending 1 war and has not raised taxes on anyone and YET we have people showing up with guns to his town halls and folks crying "Death to Michele and her stupid kids"?

If Obama did half the things Bush did God help us.
Yeah I also think its unacceptable to attack his family esp his kids - and that for any politician - well uhm maybe I might allow it on Barney lying Frank but . . .  cool I suppose those bringing guns to the townhalls were trying to make a statement - while its legal I think its the wrong place to do so and is going a bit far.

I dunno if we can go so far as to say the economy has turned around . . . we need a couple more months. But yeah I won't deny that those who dislike Obama really dislike him. You have a point its been only half a yr . . . seems like so much longer.

That's one other problem I had with Boston/Malden area as a whole. The area seems to go to sleep very quickly and important stores are few and far betwen. On the second night when we needed some supplies, we had to travel another 40 miles to find a 24 hrs Walmart Store. the roads too aren't user friendly I'd say.
Yeah you're right. The immediate suburbs around boston don't have much 'night life' unless you go far west enought to Worcester/Fram.

2. Back to topic on your second point - i dont think its true that Obama did not communicate this bill and is just rushing to pass it thru. McCloud actually has an excellent point on this on your july 22 thread on this issue. You shld read it.
I will go find it and comment later.

Everyone already knows what is in the bill, if not why would insurance companies be spending billions to fight it if they are clueless about its contents. The problem is not Obama, its the fact that those in opposition are merely doing so NOT on the basis of ideology but merely to ruin his presidency and Fox news is a BIG part of the problem. How many of these people in opposition can succintly state why they are against the bill? What is the alternative? That over 400,000 Americans continue to go into bankruptcy each yr over healthcare? That majority of those against govt-run healthcare are themselves on medicare?

Lets be honest here.
You're right the insurance companies stand a LOT to gain if the public option is dumped out of the bill. I'm no fan of the insurance companies so you won't find me sympathizing with them and all that "let capitalism run wild" charade. I want them to be reined in and their days of their lining their pockets while leaving us with ever increasing co-pays over.

But how can you completely say that all those in opposition are doing so because they want him to fail? This is the same America that voted him into presidency isn't it? The same people who loved him in november cannot have suddenly turned around so quickly if not they believe he's going in a direction they don't want.

I won't insinuate Foxnews doesn't play a role in all this but I think we're giving them way too much credit. Fox is far right, on the other end MSNBC and even ABC/CNN too . . . nobody has been complaining all this while they've been actively pushing the presidents agenda and worshipping his every move. Now suddenly fox is being villified for the very same crimes MSNBC commits? (just that fewer and fewer people are patronizing them now) because it appears they're making an impact now. I'm just saying there needs to be equal condemnation of these media outlets who have picked sides when they're supposed to remain objective.

davidylan:
you make it sound as if these people were all solidly behind him before the healthcare brouhaha. They opposed the stimulus, they say he is born in Kenya, they said no to cap and trade, they said no to pulling out of Iraq, they said no to his supplementary budget, they said no to sotomayor, they've said no to everything so this is not some ideological point of view they are presenting. They are simply saying no.
hehe the party of "just say no"  grin sometimes I myself wonder if opponents can ever see anything good in Obama. Even if ideologically you disagree, there must be something good that you can point out or praise him for. But you must admit, this is the same level of venom that was unleashed on Bush from the democrats - tit for tat is the name of the unfortunate game of politics.
