Krayola2:
Because the OT has been shown by scholars to not be of divine origin, it is logical for anyone who believes the evidence they have presented to conclude that the Qur'an's claim is not accurate;
What?  huh  when was this study done that showed the OT is not "divine origin"? How was this study carried out & what were the experimental values investigated?

and it is not of divine origin either. As in, God did not physically give any document to Moses on Mount Sinai, so th Qur'an is based on a man made document.
Again how do you know this? didn't you just say on the other thread it is impossible to prove or disprove things like this?

. . . unless of course all the above is just your personal opinion on the matter  smiley
Foreign AffairsRe: Harvard Professor Gates Arrested At Cambridge by JeSoul(f): 7:47pm On Jul 22, 2009
All ye misguided Harvard admirers, I live and work with their graduates - in my humble opinion and experience it is overrated. I'm not saying it is not among the best - I'm just saying its overrated period.

  Tayo-D,
how far is your sister willing to commute? You can easily save $200-$300 off 1 grand if you went a little further west to Natick, Framingham or even north to Stoneham or Woburn ~ 30 - 40min commute with a car & you can catch the train from some of those places. I'm a lil further west and have a fantastic spot for a wicked good price.

Watertown, Newton, Cambridge etc are expensive. I worked there and would sometimes drive an extra 10mins to the next town to save a few $ on lunch  lipsrsealed  but really at the end of the day it depends on the size of the apt, and amenities included . . . try as much to get heat included, newengland winter no be joke.

wirinet:
Now having said that, atheists cannot help matching Christians in their own game. They affect and disturb our lives, in the bus, in the streets, even in our homes, they will not allow you to sleep. They are the ones that feels it is their religious obligation to convert every other person. No other religion is that aggressive ( in terms of conversion).
Eya I apologize if christians in your community have taken an unfortunate route in their attempt to 'convert' you.

Permit me to stress that it is however a core mandate for us to go out and preach and yes convert (make disciples of all nations), and Jesus gave us an excellent example on how to go about doing this and many of us have strayed from that ideal way. I believe in preaching the gospel and moving on. Jesus didn't try to convince anyone - he spoke and it was up to them to believe him or not. I believe in the same approach, not turning to corner & intimidate & insult tactics and becoming overbearing to the point you leave the very people you're trying to win almost irreconcilably turned off.

first I second the below:

KUNLEOSHOB
Tithing and pentecostal movement
Chrisbenogor:
grin grin grin grin grin grin
Pastor Aio
Mysticism and traditional religions
(ifa et al) lol
grin grin grin
NL's own LADY- any thread that speaks against the Catholic church/doctrines

My sister OSISI - Islam, specifically on the depraved nature of Mohamed

Alhaji Olabowale - any thread on the Trinity

Pastor AIO - any philosophical thread

but the winner has to be KUNLE and any thread on tithing and anti-pentecost, I guarantee you if you bet on him to show up you will not lose.

Chrisbenogor:
Wetin you think for this matter, abi make we form panel to come out with report for every thread? grin
Make I submit my application: cheesy I read pretty much every hotly debated thread in the religion section. A "report/review" thread would be loads of fun! We have something like that in the movie section.

Pastor AIO:
I bet you don't notice that I am more likely to contribute to a thread (seriously, without jesting) if you are involved or if Krayola is involved, or a couple of other people. I don't really enjoy giving myself headache which is inevitable with other people.
True for me too. Honest debaters are around . . . riffraffs like Abuzola unfortunately drown them out.
Christianity EtcRe: A Good Religious Debate - Making Sense Of It All by JeSoul(f): 5:11pm On Jul 22, 2009
Krayola2:
I think we have to be careful what we say in debates.

When we say stuff like "God doesn't exist". . .that is a strong claim. . We don't know that. that right there kills a a debate right before it starts. Some of us might think that, but for the sake of debating we need to stop saying stuff like that. Just my opinion.

If we want Christians to listen to us and take us seriously, we have to stop talkin down on them, and their religion. I have never met anyone that stopped being religious because someone else called him silly or deluded. A lot of my professors are very religious. They don't believe in the superstitious/mythical stuff, but they are devout christians. So this idea that religion is for ignorant people is very very misguided.
I'm voting this the post of the week on NL. I'll also add that we christians are also guilty of similar crimes.

Chrisbenogor:
Maybe this topic is long overdue, it has become a normal thing for us to see debates on this section end up in ways that benefit nobody, its either a stand off between atheists and Christians, or between Muslims and Christians, in the end we really learn nothing from these debates.
One major source of the problems is the prove it concept, I can hardly put it better than Krayola2

Is it in anyway possible to come up with a general method with which these debates can be handled, over to you guys  the floor is open.
Infact I've popped in in the middle of several threads where a vicious debate is ongoing and said the exact same thing. Inspite of what we all believe, none of us can prove it in the literal, scientific sense so why bother trading accusations and demanding proofs?
I don't expect the cycle to change. Unless the participants themselves are willing to change - something I wouldn't hold my breath for based on what I've seen so far. This section is full of passionate people - a good thing. It is also full of all too often, unreasonable people on both sides.

Christianity EtcRe: The Christian And Sin by JeSoul(f): 12:13am On Jul 22, 2009
Not quite.

When God looks down at a christian who's been saved and transformed by the belief and faith in Christ, God sees Jesus' sacrifice instead of our sins.
Heb 10: because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

One the other side we're still human and still sin and make mistakes - the difference is those sins are not held against us becos Jesus already paid for them.

Foreign AffairsRe: Harvard Professor Gates Arrested At Cambridge by JeSoul(f): 11:26pm On Jul 21, 2009
I am blaming
1. the Professor who shoulda simply obeyed the police & identified himself & the situation
2. the police for overreacting, I am sure arresting him wasn't necessary
3. the usually bored & nosy lil' o ladies who report anything and everything

and as a side note, I find it hard to believe the neighbor who reported did not know what their professor neighbor looked like. The 911 call could have probably been avoided.

naliakar:
there some truth in what JeSoul says about not just Boston but almost the whole of New England. The notion that New England is liberal, relatively better educated and accommodating of differences and diversity may be true only if one ignores the more institutional and systemic subtext of attitudes and behavior that may not be different from those one would get in Mississippi for Instance. the difference being that at least in the south, they will be open about it. The case of gates is audible because of who he is? How about many nondescript blacks who reside in such areas and lack the wherewithal in fame and education to attract such attention.
Well said. Things are very different in New England compared to the rest of the country esp down south. I mean we are "liberal and educated and more accomodating' all those other things but truth be told, behind the facade many still harbor racist feelings.

And I think a lot has to do with the fact there isn't a large black population here. Too many white people just don't know how to relate or interact with blacks, couple that with the negative press they digest daily on black crime, attitude etc, it feeds the beast. I simply encourage other blacks to not be bothered about the stereotypes and simply go out and prove their illconceived notions wrong. Racism will always happen - it is an inescapable truth.

@ JeSoul
Harvard is overrated anyways

REALLY?
Yup, really. Imho they are simply living off name recognition. Some of them are genuine hardworking students who get & stay in by merit . . . but waaay too many are just spoiled brats with trust funds.
true.

However, he should still get a lawyer.
The problem I have with a lotta black people is that they cry racism at everything that happens so much so that many reasonable white people here have become desensitized. The result is when a legitimate case of racism comes up it will not get the attention or fury it deserves.
Foreign AffairsRe: Harvard Professor Gates Arrested At Cambridge by JeSoul(f): 6:01pm On Jul 21, 2009
I'm not suprised. This is Boston, neighbors call the police for everything from a stray cat to sightings of black people in a 'white' neighborhood such as mine to a house party  cheesy

Both Gates and the Police were wrong. Gates should've simply identified himself and explained the situation instead of throwing the "do you know who I am" card. And the Police should not have overreacted and arrested him. They are notorious for showing off their 'power' when its uncalled for.

Any black person who lives here in Boston knows that is mostly 'white territory' and police are more suspicious of and hostile towards blacks. Unfortunately its a way of life here.
and btw, Harvard is overrated anyways  tongue
