Tradition of same gender marriage in Igboland By Leo Igwe One of the contentious issues in the debate over homosexuality and same sex marriage is whether a marriage between persons of the same gender is totally alien to African culture and tradition. Those opposing same sex marriage have continued to argue that same gender union is foreign to Africa. On the contrary, I have tried to draw their attention to the fact that there is a strain of the same gender marriage in African tradition particularly in Igboland. And that we should not rush to deny this, or pretend it does not exist or just sweep it under the carpet in the quest to establish that same gender marriage is alien to the African continent, and must be banned. I hail from Mbaise in Imo State in Southern Nigeria. Traditionally, in my community, marriage is taken to be a union between a man and a woman as the case may be. But there are circumstances where a marriage between a woman and a woman is permissible. In a situation where a woman has no son or no child, if the husband dies, it is culturally allowed for her to marry a wife. And in this case, she becomes the husband. Like in every case of marriage, this woman goes out, inquires and gets a wife of her choice. She pays her dowry and fulfills other traditional rites as it is done when a man is marrying a woman. After that, the woman brings her “wife” home and they start living together as “husband” and “wife”. Nobody frowns at it. To have children -both the “woman- husband” and “woman- wife”- will agree to allow a man from the same village or neighbouring town to sleep with the wife. And the children born by the wife bears the family name of the woman- husband, not that of the man responsible for the pregnancy. I want to add here that the man who sleeps with such wife in most cases are married men. And normally it is regarded as immoral, in fact it is a taboo for a married man to sleep with or “father” children from another woman. But in this case an act normally taken to be immoral is allowed. This is a situation where people are permitted to break taboos and deviate from traditions. This marriage practice pre- dates Christianity and the so- called western culture which most people today blame for all the moral and cultural wrongs in Africa. The same gender marriage is still practised till date. In other words, there are some families today in Igboland where women are both husbands and wives, fathers and mothers. There are some homes where woman- husbands are living happily with their woman- wives. Though there are not many of such families or marriages. Such unconventional marriages and families are in the minority. The fact is that they exist. The fact is that they are part of the local tradition and culture. They are not imports from the West. And this has in no way undermined social cohesion, public order and morality or family values. Some people have tried to argue that this is not really a case of gender marriage because a man comes in to impregnate the wife. But, traditionally, it is the case and it is known as such. It is a case where a woman marries a woman. The man who impregnates the wife does not come into the picture at all. He has no family responsibility. His duty is only to supply sperm. The family is responsible for the woman- husband and wife. Some say that same gender unions destroy family values and undermine the upbringing of children. It should be emphasised that children in this case are brought up in an environment where both “parents” are females. And they grow up to be normal children. Some say because child bearing is involved, then it is not same gender marriage. But my response is this: whether for procreation or for pleasure, it is same gender marriage. And it is the couples, not the state that decides whether to marry for procreation and or for pleasure or for any other purpose they deem fit. Unfortunately, most Nigerians think that same gender marriage is antithetical to procreation. It is not. In fact same gender unions as in this case enrich family values. There have been instances where a partner in a same gender relationship wants children, and goes ahead to have them. Because of the secrecy, privacy and hypocrisy that go with sexual expression, no one can really say, if these female partners have or do not have sex with each other. But like all couples they live together and run their families. But today, things are changing. Individuals are becoming more open, more assertive and expressive with their sexual and marriage choices, desires, orientations and identities. The sexual and marriage dynamics are changing rapidly. And Africans must make the necessary social, cultural and legal adjustments in response to- and to accommodate- these changes. Breaking Down the Strongholds in Your Life By Ben Cerullo Note: Ben Cerullo was named by Charisma Magazine as one of the "30 Emerging Voices" that will lead the church in the next decade. Who said that being a Christian means living free of problems or struggles? Just because we have a relationship with Jesus does not mean that life will be a stroll down easy street. Life can be is tough. And as Christians, we will face many challenges. Before we were saved, we were no threat to the devil. But when we accepted Jesus into our heart, something changed. We took up a new residence in the spiritual battlefield and immediately became an enemy of Satan. We live in two worlds - the natural world and the spiritual world. Both are going on around us, yet one we can see, and the other we cannot. When we find ourselves faced with battles or temptations in our lives, we must realize that there is much more going on than what we see with our natural eyes. Many battles, struggles and trials are rooted in the spiritual realm. As a result, war must be waged on the spiritual battlefield and fought with spiritual weapons. Take depression for example. Millions of people in the U.S. are diagnosed with clinical depression every year. I have faced it in my own life. However, depression is often a spiritual condition. Please don’t take this wrong, I am not against doctors or medicine. In some cases, depression stems from physiological or chemical issues. But many times, depression is a spirit. And to overcome, not just mask the issue, we must look at the root and declare war! We must fight with the weapons that God provides. Depression is only one example of a stronghold. Others include addiction, sickness, poverty, hatred, bitterness, gossip, etc. But, God is a good God and would never leave us defenseless or send us into battle unequipped. He has given us the most powerful weapon in the world, His Word. The Bible is referred to as the sword of the spirit and for good reason. God’s Word is the ultimate authority over the lies of the enemy. There is something that happens when we put God’s Word in our mouth and begin to point it at the enemy. God’s Word will dethrone principalities and release the power needed to stand your ground. Remember you are not in a fight for victory; victory is already yours. You are just enforcing it! The only way to fight on the spiritual battlefield and gain true victory over the enemy is through the truth written in God’s Word. I am not speaking about your everyday prayers, but prayers that aggressively target and pierce the root of the problem. Prayers and declarations that strip the enemy of any authority or rights he may currently possess and give God permission to move on your behalf. In 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 it says, “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.” Our spiritual weapons are mighty in God to overcome the strongholds of the devil. Your battles will only be won in the prayer closet through head-on confrontation. You have been given dominion over the strongholds in your life, through the truth of God’s Word. In exercising this authority, you let the enemy know that he no longer has permission to harass you. Jesus said, “And you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” You see, the devil is a liar. That’s his nature. Scripture tells us that he is “the father of lies.” From childhood, we learn to believe his lies. Lies about God, lies about the world, lies about other people, lies about our own selves. Yet God wants to bring circumstances in our lives that uncover those lies in order to replace them with His truth. Ask God to show you the lies that he wants to bring to light. Maybe you know the root, maybe you don’t have a clue. The good news is that there is someone who does, and He’s just a prayer away. If you pray and ask the Holy Spirit, He will reveal the root of the lies in your life. You don’t have to go through a long ritual, simply pray and open your heart and ask God to show you. Be patient, the answer might not come right away, but if you will wait on the Lord, He will bring you the answer. So many times, we want our answer at microwave speed, right now! But if we really want freedom and breakthrough we have to be willing to persist. Patience is not a virtue that comes easy for me; I have to really work at it, as I am sure many of you do as well. But if you do not grow frustrated or give up, you will be able to face the lie and replace it with the truth – and the truth will set you free! When you seek the Lord, try to find a quiet place where you can block out the distractions around you. Just ask and wait. Soak in His presence. Enter into worship. Try not to do all the talking; just be still and listen. As you do, you may get a picture in your mind, a thought, memory, or impression. God reveals things to people in many ways. When He reveals the root to you, it’s time to allow the His spirit to heal you. This may mean it is the time to shift gears and confront the stronghold with the Word of God. Don’t be afraid to stand toe to toe with the enemy. He has something that belongs to you. Step up and let him know that he has no rights in your situation or life. Remember greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. In the name of Jesus, pull that stronghold down. You need to go past the surface and rebuke the enemy at the root of the issue. Let the devil, powers, principalities, and rulers of darkness know who is in control. You must move into an offensive position, this is no time for defense. Speak to your circumstances as a child of the King and joint heir with Christ. Your words create your realities don’t take them lightly. Don’t stop pressing in until the victory is won. As a Christian, you have the power over the devil, but he’s not going to give in without a fight. You must realize the authority God has given you and lay an ax to the root of your needs. I pray that God will give you a revelation of the spiritual weapons He has given you as a believer. I pray you will be empowered with wisdom and discernment on how to use those weapons. I pray that the warrior inside of you will awaken and the anointing of Almighty God will breakthrough the natural and pull down the strongholds in your life and the lives of those around you, setting the captives free. http://www.bencerullo.com/strongholds.aspx?utm_source=extnewsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=charisma |
Whose Nature Is in You? Wednesday, 17 June 2009 14:54 Anna McCoy SpiritLed Woman - SpiritLed Woman E-mail Print PDF After Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, God confronted Adam with an important question: "Who told you that you were naked?" (Gen. 3:11, NKJV). He was really asking Adam, "Who have you been listening to—other than Me?" God wanted Adam to realize that he had allowed something other than God's word to influence him—and as a result, something other than God's nature had entered his heart. Adam learned an important principle: Whatever you give your attention to determines the nature that lives in and rules you. Eve gave her attention to the serpent by opening the gates of her hearing, her sight and her taste. She allowed the words of the enemy to entice and deceive her to act out of his nature—one characterized by pride, lust and disobedience. The Bible says that Jesus is the "author and finisher of our faith" (Heb. 12:2). The word "author" means creator, originator. When we allow Him to be the author of our natures we produce the fruit of His Spirit. Is that the kind of fruit you're producing in your life—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and so on? If not, who is the author of your nature? Who has been writing on the tablet of your heart? When we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior of our lives, we are restored to our positions as sons of God. As a result, we inherit the nature, character and personality of God and are no longer bound by the Adamic nature. We are given the nature of Christ (see 2 Pet. 1:4). The apostle Paul confirms our changed status: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new" (2 Cor. 5:17). But Paul also makes it clear that we must choose to walk in a manner befitting our changed status. "You should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind. Put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and, put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness" (Eph. 4:17, 22-24, emphasis added). Unfortunately, this is not as easy as it sounds. There are so many voices competing for our attention! Which one are you listening to—God's, the world's, the devil's—or that of your own flesh? What man, what woman, what voice has your undivided attention? Remember: Whatever you give your attention to determines the nature that rules you. Seedy programs and pornographic sites on the Internet can lead you into sin. The scenes we view and the words we hear create perceptions—that lead to passions—that lead to actions, which develop the habits in our lives. It is by examining these habits that we can determine whose nature is in us. Words vs. God's Word Hearing is especially important in influencing our thoughts. It is one of the most significant ways in which we receive information. In fact, the way we perceive ourselves is based primarily on the words that have been spoken to us. We should be selective about the words we take into our hearts. What we receive, we believe. What we believe, we become—and act upon. The Bible says, "As [a man] thinks in his heart, so is he" (Prov. 23:7). Mankind is made of words housed in flesh. We are the words we have received. The enemy has used those closest to us to speak word curses upon our lives. His goal is to have us not only receive but also speak words that will create a distorted, self-destructive image in our spirits. God, on the other hand, uses people to speak words of exhortation and encouragement to us. Words fuel the spirit as gasoline fuels an automobile. Our hearts are programmed by words. Genesis 1 states that "the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters" (v. 2), waiting for a word from the Lord to go into action. "Then God said, 'Let there be light'; and there was light" (v. 3). Your spirit, too, is waiting for a word from the Lord so that your faith can be activated. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Fear, failure, deceit, confusion and destruction come by hearing the voice of the enemy. Sadly, many Christians have bought into the enemy's lies, accusations and strategies. We have not learned to recognize his devices because we have not spent enough time learning and hearing the Word of God. The more time we spend in God's Word, the more God's nature will live in us. We will develop a keen awareness of the enemy's devices, and our spirits will be alert and ready to hear the voice of God so that we will "by no means follow a stranger" (John 10:5). Renewing the Mind God's plan for our lives is to draw us back to Himself. Sinful habits interrupt this plan by separating us from God. They prevent us from being connected to our Source and focusing on Him so that our nature will be one with His. But let's face it: Sin is pleasurable. It's enjoyable to the flesh. It satisfies the soul. If we are truly honest with ourselves, we have to admit that we don't want to give it up. Could this be the reason Paul cried, "I am carnal, sold under sin. For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do"? (Rom. 7:14-15). His flesh and his spirit were at war with one another! No wonder he advised the Romans, "Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies [the acts of your flesh] as living sacrifices [the sin that is alive in me, that wars against God's Spirit], holy and pleasing to God this [the sacrifice] is your spiritual act of worship" (12:1, NIV, bracketed comments added). He knew that giving up sin was a sacrifice. A sacrifice requires death. Something must die; something must be killed. Our weapon to destroy the sin that lives in us is our power to make a choice. Choice is the weapon that kills the sacrifice. We have to choose to fight the war against the flesh. Second Corinthians 10:4-5 states that "the weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." Thoughts are perceptions put into words. They are what ultimately lead us into sin. The war is in our minds, and we can win the war by being active and alert, ready to demolish every perception that will lead us to ungodly passions and actions. To do this, we must follow Paul's admonition: "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Rom. 12:2). If the enemy can keep us distracted from God's plan, then he will destroy us. That's why it is necessary for us to keep our minds on God. Whatever you give your attention to determines the nature that lives in you. God has empowered us to win the battle against the enemy. He has "given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness" and has made us "partakers of the divine nature" (2 Pet. 1:3-4, NKJV). We appropriate these things by spending time in His Word—listening to Him—and making a conscious effort to be imitators of Christ so that His nature, and His alone, will live in us. If not, who is the author of your nature? Who has been writing on the tablet of your heart?" The answer—life and unanswered prayer and hard times that prayer does not seem to change. Those things write upon our heart… Those things cause us to seriously wonder if we should go on with what we've been taught about God in churches and ministries. In Bible translation, there is very little pollution; but in Bible interpretation and application, there is very much pollution. Beware what you listen to, and are drawn to in ministries, excited about obtaining more things and money and callings and power and the like. You may end up destroying your faith in God himself. THE MIRACLE OF BELIEF "My speech and my preaching was not with enticing words." 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Paul was a scholar and an orator of the first rank; he is not speaking out of abject humility; but saying that he would veil the power of God if, when he preached the gospel, he impressed people with his "excellency of speech." Belief in Jesus is a miracle produced only by the efficacy of Redemption, not by impressiveness of speech, not by wooing and winning, but by the sheer unaided power of God. The creative power of the Redemption comes through the preaching of the Gospel, but never because of the personality of the preacher. The real fasting of the preacher is not from food, but rather from eloquence, from impressiveness and exquisite diction, from everything that might hinder the gospel of God being presented. The preacher is there as the representative of God - "as though God did beseech you by us." He is there to present the Gospel of God. If it is only because of my preaching that people desire to be better, they will never get anywhere near Jesus Christ. Anything that flatters me in my preaching of the Gospel will end in making me a traitor to Jesus; I prevent the creative power of His Redemption from doing its work. "I, if I be lifted up . . . , will draw all men unto Me." July 18th. THE MYSTERY OF BELIEVING "And he said, Who art Thou, Lord?" Acts 9:5 By the miracle of Redemption Saul of Tarsus was turned in one second from a strong-willed, intense Pharisee into a humble, devoted slave of the Lord Jesus. There is nothing miraculous about the things we can explain. We command what we are able to explain, consequently it is natural to seek to explain. It is not natural to obey; nor is it necessarily sinful to disobey. There is no moral virtue in obedience unless there is a recognition of a higher authority in the one who dictates. It is possibly an emancipation to the other person if he does not obey. If one man says to another - 'You must,' and - 'You shall,' he breaks the human spirit and unfits it for God. A man is a slave for obeying unless behind his obedience there is a recognition of a holy God. Many a soul begins to come to God when he flings off being religious, because there is only one Master of the human heart, and that is not religion but Jesus Christ. But woe be to me if when I see Him I say - I will not. He will never insist that I do, but I have begun to sign the death warrant of the Son of God in my soul. When I stand face to face with Jesus Christ and say - I will not, He will never insist; but I am backing away from the recreating power of His Redemption. It is a matter of indifference to God's grace how abominable I am if I come to the light; but woe be to me if I refuse the light (see John 3:19-21). July 19th. MASTERY OVER THE BELIEVER "Ye call Me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am." John 13:13 Our Lord never insists on having authority; He never says - Thou shalt. He leaves us perfectly free - so free that we can spit in His face, as men did; so free that we can put Him to death, as men did; and He will never say a word. But when His life has been created in me by His Redemption I instantly recognize His right to absolute authority over me. It is a moral domination - "Thou art worthy . . ." It is only the unworthy in me that refuses to bow down to the worthy. If when I meet a man who is more holy than myself, I do not recognize his worthiness and obey what comes through him, it is a revelation of the unworthy in me. God educates us by means of people who are a little better than we are, not intellectually but "holily," until we get under the domination of the Lord Himself, and then the whole attitude of the life is one of obedience to Him. If Our Lord insisted upon obedience He would become a taskmaster, and He would cease to have any authority. He never insists on obedience, but when we do see Him we obey Him instantly, He is easily Lord, and we live in adoration of Him from morning till night. The revelation of my growth in grace is the way in which I look upon obedience. We have to rescue the word "obedience" from the mire. Obedience is only possible between equals; it is the relationship between father and son, not between master and servant. "I and My Father are one." "Though He were a Son, yet learned He obedience by the things which He suffered." The Son's obedience was as Redeemer, because He was Son, not in order to be Son. We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer. Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge, take it to the Lord in prayer. Do your friends despise, forsake you? Take it to the Lord in prayer! In His arms He’ll take and shield you; you will find a solace there. Blessed Savior, Thou hast promised Thou wilt all our burdens bear May we ever, Lord, be bringing all to Thee in earnest prayer.
