Being Real, Part One
by Charles R. Swindoll

Mark 1:35

Dave Cowens, one-time star basketball center for the Boston Celtics, disappeared. Without warning, he walked off the practice court, showered, dressed, and drove away. Alone.

He kept driving to . . . somewhere. His only explanation was the familiar comment, "I need to get my head together." He added that it could take as little as two weeks or as much as ten years. The sportscasters, management, team, spectators, and fans couldn't imagine what he was looking for.

I could. The Carpenters used to do a number that helps explain the superstar's puzzling reaction. It's a peaceful soul-song that talks about needing a place to hide away . . . to be quiet . . . to think things through . . . to reflect.

Perhaps that's what the Boston superstar was trying to say. He had everything imaginable---fame, possessions, job security, a strong body, lots of bucks---but maybe at that moment in his life he lacked something far more important. Something like a sense of purpose and inner fulfillment. Something which basketball and all its benefits could never provide. An inner itch that can't be scratched by achievement or people or things or activities. To scratch it requires a great deal of internal searching, which the athlete felt he couldn't do and still keep pace with the maddening NBA schedule.

To "find yourself" requires that you take time to look. It's essential if you want to be a whole person, real to the core.

Now, I'm not advocating that one suddenly stop everything else so he or she can work the hide 'n' seek process. That's rather unrealistic even if you aren't the starting center for an NBA franchise. It's a little like removing an anthill in your backyard with six sticks of TNT. Or like setting your car on fire because the engine knocks. Learning to be whole isn't prompted by copping out. But there are times in all our lives when we need to back away, slow down, stay quiet, think through, be still.

"I'd rather burn out than rust out!" shouts the zealot. Frankly, neither sounds very appealing to me. Either way you're out. People who are burning out may start a lot of fires and stir up a lot of noise and smoke. But who cares---if everything turns to ashes? People who are rusting out may move about as slowly as a sloth and live to a hundred and thirty. But so what---if all they accomplish in life is paying bills and staying out of jail?

There has to be more to life than just doing. There is! It's being. Becoming whole . . . believable . . . purposeful . . . lovable. Tomorrow, we'll talk more about the essential quality of being real.

these are the beautiful words of 2 men looking back at Gods faithfulness

Joshua 23:10-14 (New Living Translation)

10 Each one of you will put to flight a thousand of the enemy, for the Lord your God fights for you, just as he has promised. 11 So be very careful to love the Lord your God.

12 “But if you turn away from him and cling to the customs of the survivors of these nations remaining among you, and if you intermarry with them, 13 then know for certain that the Lord your God will no longer drive them out of your land. Instead, they will be a snare and a trap to you, a whip for your backs and thorny brambles in your eyes, and you will vanish from this good land the Lord your God has given you.

14 “Soon I will die, going the way of everything on earth. Deep in your hearts you know that every promise of the Lord your God has come true. [Not a single one has failed!

DIRECTION OF DISCIPLINE

"And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell." Matthew 5:30

Jesus did not say that everyone must cut off the right hand, but - If your right hand offends you in your walk with Me, cut it off. There are many things that are perfectly legitimate, but if you are going to concentrate on God you cannot do them. Your right hand is one of the best things you have, but, says Jesus, if it hinders you in following His precepts, cut it off. This line of discipline is the sternest one that ever struck mankind.

When God alters a man by regeneration, the characteristic of the life to begin with is that it is maimed. There are a hundred and one things you dare not do, things that to you and in the eyes of the world that knows you are as your right hand and your eye, and the unspiritual person says - Whatever is wrong in that? How absurd you are! There never has been a saint yet who did not have to live a maimed life to start with. But it is better to enter into life maimed and lovely in God's sight than to be lovely in man's sight and lame in God's. In the beginning Jesus Christ by His Spirit has to check you from doing a great many things that may be perfectly right for everyone else but not right for you. See that you do not use your limitations to criticize someone else.

It is a maimed life to begin with, but in v.48 Jesus gives the picture of a perfectly full-orbed life - "Ye shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect."

@consultant, you are not alone. After my first child I was in an IT job that involved a lot of travelling. I had a brand new company car and had my first 10,000 mile serivce when the car was only 3 months old, so that will give you an idea into how many miles I was covering on that job.

I hated the travel, I hated the job, I hated sleeping in strange beds in hotels, I hated the fact that I had to keep every receipt to claim back expenses,  and most importantly I hated the fact that I wasnt there for my family. My mum was staying with us to help with the baby & housework but I knew that just wasnt right.

One morning I got into work 10 minutes late and some one made a comment and that just tipped me over the edge. I calmly handed over the laptop & car keys to the one who made the comment and just walked out of the building.

I didnt have a job to go to but I just knew in my heart of heart that something wasnt right with leaving my family for so long while I was on the road all in the name of a job.

Last year by choice, I went part time and am home by 1:00. It was a big pay cut but you do get used to it and cut your coat according to your size. Money is not everything and a lot of people who think it is either havent earned good money or are single.

Now, I pick the kids up from school, we stop off at the shops to buy meat etc and we have barbeques in the garden nearly every other day. Other days we stop off at the park on the way home and spend time together. I also run an internet business so there is some income coming in from that. Now I have tinme to answer those tricky questions kids love asking like "how did I get into your tummy mummy"?

My housework still is not perfect & not totally under control, but im not rushing around in the mornings like a raging bull because I cant find the kids socks or they havent read their book or havemt done their home work.
Jollof rice or fried rice is not just a sunday meal as now I have time to do more in the home.

I know some of my mates earn £1,000 a day contracting but quite honstly I rather spend the time with my family than accumulating all that money in the bank.

Why am I saying all this? Just to encourage you and to let you know that I have been there and I understand what you are going through & how you feel. God bless you.
thanks for spelling it all out.  be prepared to be told you are supposed to be making as much as you can just in case you need to work on plan B.
Consultant:

It's interesting. I currently work full time, and my job involves a lot of travelling. Before I had kids, I would have said NEVER to being a house wife (stay-at-home mum, whatever). But now that I have two kids, the only reason why I still have this job is because my husband and I have a lot of  responsibilities. My dream would be to have a job that I can do from home - maybe write, or run my own business, so that I can spend more time with my children. I feel so responsible for them, and I want to 'train them up in the way of the Lord', and that takes time and attention. That's why I admire Michelle Obama so much - giving up a high paying job and just being a mum - and looking like she's have a great time doing it.

I guess all women can't be the same, so I don't expect that all women should share my sentiments. If I did stay at home, though, I would have to be doing a lot more than housework, because God gave me these brains for a reason, and it's not just to vacuum!
typical nigerian ( michelle) would be looking for money to spend for the 600yrs they intend to live on planet earth.  you mean they dont teach the act of vacuum clenaing as a course in schools.

olabowale:

Don't laugh too hard, yet, until you think for a critical moment by asking yourself and answering the following qusetions:

From Adam to Jesus; is there a prophet who has no instructions to worship The Creator?
Was Jesus a Prophet?
Was Jesus exempted from worshipping his Creator, while Adam, Noah, Ibrahim, Moses, etc were required to worship the Creator?
If Jesus worshipped his Creator, then in what religion methodology did he follow?
Was that methodology different from that of Adam, Noah, Ibrahim to name just a few?
Was Jesus the Creator of heavens and earth, including the Angel Gabreil who was sent to assist him in time of difficulties?
Was Jesus the Creator of Adam, etc?
Wouldn't it foolish, if Jesus was and then in the Bible narration of creation of man, we read that he would be telling himself what he was about to do?
If Jesus worshipped his Creator as we read that the did, even prayed to him, alone and thought his companions how to worship the Creator, did he worship as the Jews do today, by bopping their face toward the "wailing wall?"
Is the religion of Adam, Noah, Ibrahim, Moses, even Jesus that they worshipped their Creator by still consistently available to us today?
What is the name of that religion?
Is God the Creator not consistent in His way and reliably unchanging God?
Is the religion Judaism?
Is there anything called Jewish people in the time of Moses, since they are called Israelites or Children of Israel?
Was Jew or Judaism ever in existence until the Children of Israel nations were broken down to Israel and Judea?
Is the religion Christianity?
Was Christianity even a religion until after Jesus was "lifted up" by his Creator?
Were Adam, Noah, Ibrahim, etc of the Jewish religion or was it the Christian religion?

I will leave Islam out of it for now. But I will remind everyone that Islam simply means "Submission to the Will of the Creatoor, in worship, etc". Ibrahim's statement in Surah An Am (Chapter 6, one of the last 5 verses) comes to mind.

Instructions left by Jesus, you asked?
Did he say that he should be worshipped, along with his Creator?
Did he say that people should pray to his Mother as the Catholics do?
Did he say that he is God, which will tell us that there are more than 1 gods?
Did he say that he was the Creator, too, which means that there are more than 1 Creator?

There is the instruction, according to the Bible that Jesus said: I am not here to abolish but to fulfill the Laws and the prophets. And any who does or suggest anyone to do so, is the least in heaven.

What is the actual meaning of that statement of Jesus, except it is an instruction? Please, noetic no chaotic explanation or interpretation. We can read english. It is simple and direct instruction.

Did you, the Christian body ever follow this instruction, ever, I said?
Did you not take the statement of Paul and company to overcome that of Jesus, whereby you destroyed the laws and the prophets instead of fulfilling them?

Now when you finish answering these sets of questions, you can laugh hard at yourself, if you still remain a christian.
sheik ibn olabs, you never fail to disappoint do you?
Politics / North Trades IGP Seat For Customs Top Job by JJYOU: 11:04am On Jun 29, 2009
North trades IGP seat for Customs top job

Taiwo Adisa, Abuja - 29.06.2009

THE search for the successor to the seat of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Mike Okiro, took an interesting dimension at the weekend with the revelation that the North has opted out of the race.

Sources close to the seat of power confirmed to the Nigerian Tribune that Northern political calculations now favour the seat of Comptroller General of Customs (CGS), which will be vacant in August.

A source told the Nigerian Tribune that some Northern powerbrokers had made it clear to the incumbent administration that the North would prefer to occupy the seat of the Customs boss, when the tenure of the current CGS, Dr. Bernard Shaw Nwadialo, expires.

It was gathered that the North prefers the Customs job when placed side by side the IGP post. It was learnt that many powerbrokers in the North believed that the post of Customs boss was more relevant to the needs of the area at this time.

The decision, which is being closely guarded, is said to have created a frenzy among top politicians in the three Southern geopolitical zones, over who will produce Okiro’s successor.

But it was learnt that the South-East, which had hitherto believed that it would be easy to secure the seat for Mr. Ogbona Onovo, this time, was said to have been jolted by moves from the two other zones to clinch the seat.

The Presidency was said to have shortlisted five Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs) as possible successors to Okiro, who retires on July 24.

A source told the Nigerian Tribune that leaders of the South-East had planned to massively oppose the choice of the new governor of Central Bank (CBN), Mr. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, on the basis of non-observance of the Federal Character principle but they backed down when they felt that it would be easier to push the Presidency to pick Onovo as the new IG.

The source said that the revelation that the two other zones from the South were equally in the race and had competent hands that could take over as IGP led to a series of meetings by the South-East leaders last week.

Findings by the Nigerian Tribune indicated that a search team constituted by the Presidency had already scrutinised the records of the serving six DIGs, while five were been shortlisted with only one said to have completely lost out.

A recommendation was, however, still being awaited from the Police Service Commission (PSC), headed by Mr. Parry Osanyande. But the decision by the North to withdraw from the race may inform the withdrawal of the two Northern candidates from the race, leaving the Southern officers to slug it out.

A source confirmed that one other reason why the North decided to back out of the race for IGP is the fact that the zone has already produced the Minister of Police Affairs.

The Presidency panel was said to have screened the records of all DIGs, including Ogbona Onovo (Enugu), Uba Ringim (Jigawa), Israel Ajao (Osun), Declan Uzoma (Imo), Udom Ekpoudom (Akwa-Ibom) and John Ahmadu (Taraba).

With the thinking in the North, the government may have narrowed its search for a new IGP among most senior DIGs to Onovo, Ajao, Uzoma and Ekpoudom, who are from the South.

Details obtained by the Nigerian Tribune indicated that the trio of Onovo, Ajao and Uzoma joined the force the same day in 1977, while Ekpoudom joined in 1981. Onovo was, however, promoted ahead of his coursemates to fill the South-East quota before they all became DIGs.

A source said that the search party had decided to look at educational qualifications, command experience, as well as the professional competence of each officer and performance at the various duty posts in the past.

When asked about the intensity of the succession battle, a source said: “The entire South is involved in this. Some people have talked about South-East having the upper hand but geographical calculations was of no effect here, because an Igbo man is an Igbo man, whether in Delta or in Ebonyi. Just as the Yoruba from Kogi and Kwara cannot say they are not Yoruba, because they are from the North.”

Religion / When Can A Divorcee Remarry? by JJYOU: 11:00am On Jun 29, 2009
When can a divorcee remarry?

divorceeDivorce has become a common issue, even in the Christendom. It is even more worrisome that some of the victims of divorce are still too young to stay out of wedlock. BIODUN MUHAMMED and MODUPE OKUSANYA, in this piece, look at the church and the future of divorcees, asking whether it is biblically right for any of the partners to remarry.

IF what the Bible says about marriage and divorce and this analysis and interpretation of men of God's view about the subject matter are taken into consideration, no sane Christian would opt for divorce. Some situations however make divorce the best option for that soul that desires not to die untimely.

Sister Solape found herself between life and death in her bid to keep her marriage intact to avoid the stigma of being called a divorcee as well as be faithful to her decision to follow Christ unconditionally.

It was a glorious day when Sister Solape was joined in marriage with her husband. The marriage enjoyed the peace, love and harmony that is typical of agape love until the mother-in-law scuttled the peace when she took the place of Solape in her son’s heart.

The said mother-in-law saw nothing good in everything the she did, she did not hide her animosity towards her daughter-in-law as she physically and spiritually attacked her.

At the beginning of the mother-in-law's diabolical acts, her son, was very angry with her as he saw his mother as an intruder that was ready to destroy the family. According to the sister, her mother-in-law must have employed fetish means to force his son to dance to her tune. The man later became wild turning the sister to a worthless object that could be treated without the simplest form of respect. She was beaten on many occasions and even outsiders could see the trouble in her home boldly written on her face. The trouble got to a climax when the man almost killed the sister and their two weeks old baby. The only reason the man advanced for his action was that he was fed up with everything that had to do with the lady. He later left the house to go and cleave to a strange woman.

Sister Solape did all she could to ward divorce but then, the devil forced it on her. The Bible say God does not like divorce and the sister’s church says no divorcee would be accorded any special place and so, the humiliated sister got confused, she is still faithfully waiting for her husband, whose return can only be determined by divine intervention.

However, in a similar development, tongues wagged in condemnation of Mr. Joel, who abandoned his wife as he ran away only to get married to another lady about two years later. Not until Mr. Joel had chance to express what he went through in the hands of his wife was he accorded the deserving pity. Here is the story from the horse’s mouth. “Look, I don’t need to convince you that I am a born again child of God because that is between me and my God. If I knew I was going to marry a mad dog, I would never have gone close to that devil called my wife. The problem started the very day we got married, she said she was observing fasting and prayer so we could not meet. Her fasting and prayer transformed from days to weeks and after about two months, we finally met and it was like I received baptism of pains for a week just because I met with my so called wife."

“In six months, I met with my wife three times and after each encounter, I had to visit the hospital to get treatment for general body pain. I was suffering in silence for the three years that we were married before I decided to run for my dear life.”

He said he ran for his dear life but one wondered what could have put the man on the run “I don’t pray any young man that is yet to marry comes across a woman like the one I married. I wouldn’t have fled if not that she wanted to kill me. She said my demand for sex was a stain on her holy life and she was going to stab me with her kitchen knife. She did not know I was not deep asleep as she tiptoed with the knife held up to kill me. I got up and struggled with her. "When I got out of the house, I resolved not to go back as I was too afraid."

“On why I got married to another lady, I want us to leave that to God to judge. I know I will never go running after one woman after the other and as a vibrant young man, I need to get a stable woman so that I don’t get myself into trouble. Call me any name that you want, I don’t care. You are not God and you cannot judge me.”

That was Mr. Joel as he wrote his book of lamentation just as some church leaders keep hammering on the need for couples to live together or risk staying without having sexual relationship with any other person for life.

It is no more news that divorce is one of the most common situations around. Divorcees are now getting increasingly used to the issue of stigmatisation in other words, they now have shock absorber that makes them lead a careless life style.

Marriage is holy estate instituted by God who created man and woman. The man and the woman are meant to complement each other. Love should be the first principle of marriage, where the husband sacrifices himself for his wife and the wife submits herself to her husband. In holy matrimony, the two become one flesh with God’s approval. Marriage is meant to be for life and nothing but death should separate the married coupled. Jesus said in Matt. 19 vs 6: therefore they are no more two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together let no man put asunder. This takes us to the issue of divorce in marriage.

Today, divorce is almost as common as marriage, God made it pretty clear what He thinks of divorce in Malachia 2:13-16: And this have done again, covering the altar of the Lord with tears, with weeping and with crying out, because he regard not the offering or receives it with good will at your hand. Yet you say, why? Because the Lord has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously. Yet is she your companion and the wife of your covenant. And did not he make them one? Yet had he the remnant of the spirit. And why one? That he might seek a godly offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. For the Lord, the God of Israel says that, he hates putting away (divorce) for one covers violence with his garment, says the Lord of hosts: Therefore take heed to your spirit, that you deal not treacherously.

When Jesus was asked further in Matt 19; why Moses gave them (the Israelites) the order to put away their wives by a writing of divorce—Jesus answered them by saying:, Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts allowed you to put away your wives; but from the beginning it was not so. And I say unto you, whosoever shall put away his wife, except, it be for fornication and shall marry another, commits adultery; and who ever marries her who is put away does commit adultery.

Only the death of one partner should dissolve a marriage and free the other to remarry. The widow or widower can, of course, remarry whenever he or she feels ready, because death has dissolved the marriage. I Cor. 7:39 says: The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband lives. But if her husband is dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord. It is not the will of God that marriage is dissolved by anything but death.

Moreover, according to the word of God in Matt. 19:9; when a person gets divorced and then remarries, the consummation of such marriage is an act of adultery, except if adultery was the cause of the divorce. Adultery is the only bases the Bible recognises for divorce.

No doubt, the issue of divorce, polygamy, promiscuity and so on were also in vogue in the days of Jesus, however, Jesus made His stand known on these things. The story of Jesus and the woman at the well illustrates his attitude towards them—John 4:5—18. No matter how common the practice of divorce is, the fact remains that God hates it.

There are so many factors that lead to divorce apart from adultery, such factors include, barrenness, insecurity, unbroken curses, ineffective communication or misunderstanding, external influences from in-laws, intellectual differences, orientational differences (bias beliefs, background) to mention a few.

Divorce is worst than death because you will keep seeing your partner either at close or far range because you only separated and not dead. Every divorcee lives in fear, and insecurity as far as the other partners is alive because there is no more secret between the duo.

In order to prevent your marriage from divorce, let your marriage be according to the law of God, never allow the devil to plant a negative seed in your heart against your children, never think negatively against your wife and you must always learn to soak your marriage in prayer.

With the difficult situations like that of sister Solape and Mr. Joel in view, Sunday Tribune went out to meet church leaders and other christians for their comment on the situation that seems to be getting every sensitive individual worried.

Dr. Babatunde Fatoki, who is the pastor of the Oluyole Metropolitan Baptist Church said “divorce is not in the Bible. From the Biblical point of view, God does not like divorce. The language is God hates divorce. The most important thing is that couples should imbibe the ability to forgive and forget. Malachi chapter 3, clearly stated that God hates divorce so, what He hates, we cannot love. Talking about adultery as the only ground under which divorce is allowed needs be carefully explained, as God does not feel happy with separation under any guise. Anybody could fall into temptation irrespective of sex, so, what is of importance is the ability to forgive and forget as stated earlier. Marriage is meant to be enjoyed but when couples get it wrong at the entry point and the marriage goes turbulent, they should endure.”

On whether any partner in a failed marriage could remarry, Pastor Fatoki said “Any good Christian will consider God first and not any other earthly desire before going into marriage. I mean your salvation and Godly comfort must be well considered. If for example, the man pulls out of marriage and goes out of his way to marry another person and his legal wife could not wait again, she may remarry if she sees someone that is ready to marry her. It must be pointed out, however, that such a second marriage cannot be conducted in the church again and such a sister cannot hold any serious position in the church. While the church satisfies her desire to remarry to avoid her turning a prostitute, the church must however refrain from a situation that looks like her action to remarry has the strong backing of the church.

The church cannot afford to still humiliate a sister that is already humiliated by a fake brother. We give her chance to grow in the Lord again and live a better life while we maintain our stand that she cannot hold a serious position in the church. Anyone who partakes or encourages divorce will pay grievous penalty for it. The stand of the Baptist Church is that divorcees can not hold church leadership positions.”

Very Reverend Samuel Adeyemi of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Odo-Ona, said “in the Bible book of Matthew 19 vs 5–6, Jesus Christ told the pharises that what God had joined together should not be put asunder by anybody. We emphasise caution before marriage is contracted because if you see a snake and think you saw a lady and you are joined together in marriage, believe me, that is your wife. We always advise our people to allow adequate investigation to be made about the person they are going to marry just as we enjoin them to pray as we also pray for them.

“If the divorce happens despite the necessary endurance on the part of one of the parties, well, the only thing such a person can do is to keep praying for the gone partner to return while he/she keeps his/her stand in the Lord by not sleeping around. It is not proper for such a person to rush into another marriage because her own partner has just played away. Everybody has his or her partner and no one has more than one. Adam and Eve had only one. Going to remarry is going to displace another person. Even if you feel that person is not married, he/she has a person divinely attached.”

On whether someone who is still young could remarry if the partner abandons him or her to go and marry someone else, Reverend Adeyemi said “according to Paul, such a person could remarry but I don’t see such marriage as proper. Wisdom could be applied to handle such a situation to prevent the affected person from immoral acts. It must however be pointed out that such a person loses the chance to be a leader in the church. If such a person is made an officer in the church, it becomes a point of reference.”

Dr. Akinbola Tolulope, a minister of the Redeemed Christian Church of God said “Divorce is not of God. The only condition that could compel divorcee is adultery and anybody that marries someone already joined to another person commits sin. A divorcee should stay unmarried, no other interpretation. Such a person should pray for grace to hold the body while waiting to meet Jesus Christ.

thanks all. unbelievable the cross and the blood of Christ still cause this level of offence. it will never loose its power. one day you all will bow to this same cross in Jesus name.

anyway enjoy this hymns

The Old Rugged Cross

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suffering and shame;
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.

Refrain

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.

O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary.

Refrain

In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see,
For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
To pardon and sanctify me.

Refrain

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true;
Its shame and reproach gladly bear;
Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I’ll share.

Refrain

The Old Rugged Cross was written in Albion, Michigan. Or Pokagon, Michigan. Or Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. All three towns claim to be the birthplace of this hymn.

MARCHING ON

by Maxine Hurston

Satan's warlords draw their swords
To kill the Church of God,
But only stain the path with blood,
Down here on earthen sod.

Christ's Church is marching on.

Not to be defeated,
The Church is marching on.
Christ the cornerstone,
The Church is marching on.

His Church goes marching on.

Preacher, be not weary,
Don't hang your head and sigh.
We are Christ's, He is ours,
Rejoice with faith and cry:

The Church is marching on.

Join us now, you sinners!
Come join our happy throng!
Christ's death has made us free,
So sing with us this song:

His Church is marching on.

You hear the Church marching?
Oh, such a mighty sound!
Born of the Spirit, never to die,
The Church is marching on.

Christ's Church is marching home.

Crime / I’m Not An Armed Robber, But An Informant’ by JJYOU: 10:22am On Jun 26, 2009
I’m not an armed robber, but an informant’

Olalekan Olabulo, Lagos - Updated: Friday 26-06-2009

From left, Bambo Adebayo (the Informant)
with other suspects“This is ridiculous. I don’t expect the police to parade me alongside these robbery suspects. I am not an armed robber. I told the police that I supplied information to the boys that raided the estate, but I was never part of the gang. I am not an armed robber. It is wrong for the police to parade me as an armed robber”.

It was argument galore recently at Ogun State Police Command, Eleweran, Abeokuta, when the police paraded Bambo Adebayo, 30, an indegene of Ayesan Area of Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, as a member of an armed robbery gang

Crime and Security learnt from the police sources that Bambo Adebayo had some weeks back given some vital information to a three-man gang that eventually stormed Ayesan community and robbed residents of the area. Bambo has since been arrested by the police in Ogun State after a member of the gang was arrested.

The suspect was paraded by the Ogun State police commissioner, Ashmiu Argungu , who advised criminals in the state to retrace their steps or face the full wrath of the law.

The police boss stated that the police in the state would from time to time restrategise , as a way of ensuring that the lives and property of the residents of the state were well protected.

The suspect, while speaking with Crime and Security, stated that he had some weeks ago given some pieces of information to the trio of Yekini Obabi, Lanre Ogunusi and Idowu , all of whom he claimed were his colleagues in land speculation business.

He claimed to have met Yekini and others at a site where he had gone to speculate for land owners. Bambo further informed Crime and Security that it all started some weeks back, when conflict for the ownership of a piece of land, where himself and the three armed robbery gang members were served as thugs, was settled. After this, he said there was nothing again to do and each member of the gang that worked on the land had to look for something to eat”

Accrding to him, Bambo and the other two members had contacted him to help them get information on whom they could rob, since they were also into robbery. The suspect confessed to have given them information on a household, directly behind his resident at 30, Ayesan Street near Lagos Motor Park in Ijebu Ode .

With the information, the three-man armed gang reportedly invaded the said house and held the occupants to ransom , before they eventually left with money and other valuables

On the kind of information that he gave to the armed robbers, Bambo stated that he merely told his gang members that the occupants of the building were auto dealers.

He claimed that he did not know much about the victims of the robbery except that, they were his neighbours and also that they were auto dealers. He said that attempts by the gang members to know whether or not the victims used to bring money home were futile , as he did not know .

A police source, who pleaded anonymity, while speaking with Crime and Security, however, claimed that the suspect was the insider that provided the logistics with which the gang operated successfully at the scene of the incident.

The police source stated that Bambo carefully ensured that he studied the building and provided the necessary information to the gang. The police source also informed Crime and Security that preliminary investigations revealed that the armed robbers had promised to give the suspect part of the proceeds from the robbery operation.

Crime and Security was also informed that the suspect did not go with the armed robbers for that particular operation because of the fear of being identified by his neighbours.

The suspect, while explaining the circumstances behind the arms and ammunition found in his possession, admitted to have touched the arms before his arrest.

According to him, a certain Lanre, who is also a land speculator had short-changed him over the sum of N10,000, being the money paid to them for their efforts at the site of the land , where they served as thugs.

He claimed that Lanre had collected N30,000 for him from their master , who took them to site. He further claimed that Lanre only gave him N20,000 instead of N30,000 which was paid by their master.

According to him, Lanre was on his way to his post, where he served as a night guard, when he accosted him and demanded for his balance. He claimed that he had only wanted to seize the gun from Lanre just to ensure that he was given his balance

He also confessed to Crime and Security that, he would have kept the gun and be using it for land speculation business. The suspect, while speaking on his family background with the Crime and Security, stated that his parents were in Ijebu Ode and that he was the second child in a family of 12.

He further informed Crime and Security that he had, since the completion of his primary school some years back, been working as a timber loader . He told Crime and Security that he had to abandone his timber loading business for land speculation because of the prospect of making more money from land speculation.

Bambo, meanwhile claimed that he had not really made enough money from the land speculation business and that he regretted leaving a legitimate business for land speculation , which made him to mingle with armed robbers, that threw him into his present predicament.

The suspect, however, claimed that he had never expected to be paraded by the police since he only gave information to the armed robbers and did not follow them to rob. http://www.tribune.com.ng/26062009/tue/crime1.html

Crime / Senseless Murder _ The Killing Of Professor Agho by JJYOU: 10:00am On Jun 26, 2009
The killing of Professor Agho

Updated: Friday 26-06-2009
Nosa Osaigbovo

ON May 16, 2009, I spent about two hours with a man who had less than a day to live. He did not know it and neither did I. He was not on death row and did not suffer from an illness whose fatal finality had been accurately forecast by doctors, as in the case of one sickle cell patient.

It was in Benin City on a Saturday morning that had stretched its limbs but had not fully stirred. The murmuring of movements could be heard, but the clangour of a city in full cry was absent. The air had a sniff of sombreness.

We were driven in the car of a senior Federal Government official to the home of a top Edo State civil servant. He was still in bed, but received us warmly when he came into the sitting room where we were already comfortably seated.

Dr. Michael Osarenogowu Agho, Professor of Chemistry at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, was apprehensive about the fate of a building he had struggled to put up in Benin City, his hometown. A professor who practises probity is not rich and takes scholarship as his solace. Politicians build palaces and he is not envious of them.

The professor had received a call in Bauchi that a task force set up by the Adams Oshiomhole government had knocked down the wall demarcating his property. He travelled to Benin City in the senior Federal Government official’s car to try to save his house.

He had carefully taken all the legal steps in acquiring and building on the land. Survey and building plans were approved by government and he paid the necessary fees.

Professor Agho was understandably shocked when he was informed that government had knocked down the wall without warning and had clearly stated its intention to demolish his house by flattening some houses in the same area.

The government claimed the land belonged to it, but there was not even a signboard to indicate its ownership. The government did nothing while the buildings went up, but was heartlessly happy to bring them down.

The senior Edo civil servant said nothing could be done to save Professor Agho’s house if it was built on government land.

Professor Agho was not downhearted. There was a civilised calmness about him that was not reticence. He spoke softly but with the spontaneity and warmth of true friendship. I first met him in 2006, though our mutual friend, the senior Federal Government official, told me that we had actually met several years earlier. I remembered the place, but had no recollection of the meeting.
In 2006, the three of us were driven in the senior Federal Government official’s car from Benin City to a state capital in the North. Professor Agho was returning to Bauchi. I soon got to know him pretty well. He studied in the United States and was awarded a university scholarship for superior academic performance. He returned to Nigeria after obtaining his doctorate.

Professor Agho loved country music, my favourite kind of music. Our mutual friend, the senior Federal Government official, knows many country lyrics by heart. Professor Agho had studied at Texas and I sang to him a snatch of Marty Robbins’s ‘El Paso City’, a sad, haunting song about a cowboy who killed and died for love.

Professor Agho was listening to country music in the senior government official’s car when he was shot dead on Sunday, May 17 near Okpella in Edo State at 9.30 a.m. There were no intimations of his death when we parted around 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 16. It was a normal parting and the present and the future held hope and no dark forebodings.

The professor sat in the passenger seat and our mutual friend and a colleague of his sat at the back. He wore a T-shirt. A car overtook and blocked that in which they were being driven. Three armed men jumped out of the car and one of them shot the professor in the chest through the windscreen. He aimed another shot at the driver.

The murderer told the senior government official with ghoulish glee, ‘Senator, we have killed your Mopol and driver.’ They dragged him and his colleague out of his car, which carries a Federal Government number plate, and hustled them into a vehicle they had stolen at gunpoint.
But the driver was not dead. The first shot that killed the professor had warned him and he moved faster than the bullet that was fired to kill him. The armed men saw blood on his clothes and believed he was dead. They did not know that it was the professor’s heart, healthy and young at 58, that had pumped the blood that drenched the driver.

The driver crawled out of the car after it became eerily quiet. He waved down several vehicles but none of the drivers stopped. After what seemed like hours, a lorry driver, a man without much education, stopped where many expensive cars carrying important-looking men had sped past.
The driver was taken to Okene and the police went with him to the murder scene and took the professor’s body to the mortuary.

The armed men were kidnappers and even with proof that he was not a senator, they refused to release the senior government official. A female victim of a carjacking carried out by the kidnappers was shot dead by them when the car suddenly came to a stop.

The senior government official and other victims were driven to Akure and from there to some other towns. They were then taken to the bush where they spent a night of continual threat and actual violence. A victim was shot in the leg because he told the kidnappers, whose number had swelled to about six, that he did not have the kind of money they were demanding for his freedom.
The senior government official was released after two days of sheer terror. They used his ATM cards to withdraw money from his accounts. They gave policemen at checkpoints N2, 000 and their suspicion was not aroused! The policemen hailed the kidnappers as good and generous men.
The kidnappers took their victims to Ibillo in Edo State and freed them after cashing substantial ransoms. The victims were lucky to be alive.

But Professor Agho, who travelled to Benin City because government was about to destroy his house, did not return to his wife and three sons in Bauchi.

Will their bereaved hearts ever be happy again?

Will their tears, like in the Don Williams song, ever dry? http://www.tribune.com.ng/26062009/fri/mosaic.html

Chrisbenogor:

First question is this why is belief so important, not whosoever is kind to fellow human beings, that is by the way side sha. Are you saying the above means the bible or Jesus' messages?
If God spoke the bible why then are there the many contradictions? Why is the old testament God vindictive and Jesus Christ a lot different? Christians are fond of using duct tape to put even parts that make the least bit of sense together.
Let us not even go too far, why do the gospels which I think is a big foundation of Christianity so contradictory? How come God contradicts himself?

I would proffer you a solution though, could it be that these men wrote how they feel about God? and not what "God" spoke? Just a thought,
see if this makes sense to you
Ecclesiastes 12:1-7 (New Living Translation)

Ecclesiastes 12

1 Don’t let the excitement of youth cause you to forget your Creator. Honor him in your youth before you grow old and say, “Life is not pleasant anymore.” 2 Remember him before the light of the sun, moon, and stars is dim to your old eyes, and rain clouds continually darken your sky. 3 Remember him before your legs—the guards of your house—start to tremble; and before your shoulders—the strong men—stoop. Remember him before your teeth—your few remaining servants—stop grinding; and before your eyes—the women looking through the windows—see dimly.

4 Remember him before the door to life’s opportunities is closed and the sound of work fades. Now you rise at the first chirping of the birds, but then all their sounds will grow faint.

5 Remember him before you become fearful of falling and worry about danger in the streets; before your hair turns white like an almond tree in bloom, and you drag along without energy like a dying grasshopper, and the caperberry no longer inspires sexual desire. Remember him before you near the grave, your everlasting home, when the mourners will weep at your funeral.

6 Yes, remember your Creator now while you are young, before the silver cord of life snaps and the golden bowl is broken. Don’t wait until the water jar is smashed at the spring and the pulley is broken at the well. 7 For then the dust will return to the earth, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.

you should be worried abt your own judgement
the bbc deliberately said this morning his brother ended his statement with allah is great.

yea yea you are so right. men and women should be worried about their own judgement. for there will be a day we all must cease to breathe too and the owner of the soul will ask what we did with the body and life He gave us. the song writter said " and o what a weeping and wailing when the lost where told of their fate. they cried for their lord and master but their cry was too late".

hope we all get the opportunity to make our ways right with God before that day. it doesnt always have to end up hopelessly bad

dont you think on a day like this we all should reflect and think of our moratlity?
that a day is coming for all mankind when the strongest and the weakest will breathe no more.
when the owner of every life and soul will require it back and ask what we did with it

the old church used to sing  "son of man think of your life what shall be the end of your life when all these things are passed away  ,     son of man think of your life"

do you think there will be day even you will not be able to use nairaland, eat, play and get angry at people like this poster?  that is what the guy is asking you to think rightly about.

you are right there are things out of our jurisdiction but the bible says hell is the destiny of all sinners.  we are all trying to be sinner emeritus without thinking its consequences but you have to agree that every action has its consequences that is why we have this passage in the boble asking me and you to think about the priviledge we have today that can be gone tomorrow.

it is not a day for no sermon but a day to say we have been given another opportunity to use life. how will you and i use it? that is the question.
