There is no comparison to students - students are rewarded for ACHIEVEMENT, not a physical state, and are ENCOURAGED to work harder and can receive subsequent awards through their efforts.

@debosky, I need to mention that it is an achievement for a girl to be a virgin as an adult. You can ask any of the ones who lost theirs early on to sexual intercourse how much effort it would have taken for any of them to preserve their virginities

What really baffles to me is the penchant for certain people to ascribe uncomplimentary words to those of differing views. But when those people return their veiled insults, openly, they then start their claims about insults.

if you dont want to be insulted, dont use uncomplimentary words to describe others simply for not sharing your views - its the most primitive and daft thing to do!

So if a man/women believes that there is a promotion of virtue in recognising those who are keep their virginities, the next thing for opponents of that view is to use words that are insults in disguise? It only reveals that there is bitterness in them if the only way they can make their points is to insult others.

I still haven't heard of a decent enquiry made by any African people as to why the slave trade occurred on the scale that it did.  If anything goes wrong in oyinboland, whether it is an accident, plane crash, systemic failure, whatever, an inquiry is made to ascertain the reasons why these things happened so we are better informed to deal with it and make sure it doesn't happen again.

Government doesn't build roads etc, yes I agree.  But how many citizens in that country pay their taxes.  Except you are working for a big firm or bank and can't hide, most nigerians scam their government on a regular basis.  I'm not saying that if they paid their taxes then the taxes with be well spent on public utilities by the government.  But I am saying that it takes two to tango.  The people are as rotten if not more rotten than the leadership they like to blame.  In fact the leadership merely emerges from the people. 
As records attest, these rotten peoples, when they go to other societies with  'good leadership', only make themselves a nuisance to that society.  Of course I'm speaking in broad strokes and not referring to absolutely everyone.  Time and time again in London I come across nigerians that have such a rancid attitude it's terrifying.  It has gotten to the point where I have some 9ja friends that deny their nigerian.  They claim Togo.  Why?  cos no one's heard of Togo so there will be no preconceptions or prejudice against them for it. 

I personally think that the problem is cultural and spiritual, not political.  Nigerians need to do some soul searching, and I don't mean as a nation but each of us as individuals.  We need to look within and questions ourselves and our lives. 
Nigeria has always exported it's human resources for the last 400 years or more, whether it is forcibly in the slave trade, or willingly as in the present immigration situation.  These two phenomena are linked.

These same things I have been saying for some years now.

Nigerians never like to listen to the truth which makes them take responsibility. Nobody wants to hear this truth about their personal contributions to the Nation.

It is this type of your argument that tends to irritate lots of people including myself. Your analogy falls flat on its face, but let me treat it all the same. Do you know how many Nigerians for example want to and try to leave Nigeria? The same for Zimbabweans, Pakistanis etc? MILLIONS. I am sure you know that an escape route is not open to everyone. This is the kind of thing that also gets to me. You are trying to paint a picture of a re-curring occurence. I could go back and bring you the number of such cases that have happened in the UK in the last 20 years but I dont have the time to prove such things. I will never belittle the pain that anyone goes through - I have seen people go through pain(believe me when I say that) and I cant imagine what it feels like. Let us ignore the life threat issue (which alongside psychological concerns has actually been recorded as the predominant reason for carrying out this hymen operation), a woman doing an operation to "please" a man does not amount to an admission that she is subject to the desires of a man. Thus, such women from those cultures have found what they consider is the perfect solution in these present times i.e. carry on exactly as they wish and let the fool who cannot handle this fact (who wants a virgin) think otherwise. In other words, they are eating their cake and having it too. If they were "subject[ing]" themselves to the "desires" of men, they will not have had any pre-marital sex whatsoever. It is done in much the same manner like lots of female teenagers back in Naija have sex but actively promote an image or a front of innocence and virginity to their parents, because they know that being that way pleases their parents and their lives would be much pleasant if those parents were kept in their little cuckoo world. The fact that those girls hide their active sexual lives from their parents or overtly deceive them does not stop them being much more liberated than their counterparts a century ago. Would you say that those men who have affairs and children out of wedlock and hide this from their wives are "subjecting" themselves to the desires of their wives because they have lied and gone to great painful lengths to be deceptive about these affairs and children? Surely, the very proposition is ludicrous. It is basically the same principle when women talk to their boyfriends or husbands about their past sexual partners i.e. So many men cannot handle large numbers, so the women cut the figure down. If the guys continue to have ridiculous expectations and/or can't handle the truth, they will continue to be fed lies until women achieve equality in all aspects of life.

Thus, at the end of the day, these women are operating in mainly uncharted waters and have found a way to circumvent the nuisance of some men's ridiculous requests or the expectations of virginity as a badge to be worn. These women (from those nationalities that are affected) can have it all, they can sleep with whosoever they like, yet marry someone respectable that they want to (who though he is more than likely to have shagged about himself, does not want his wife to have done so) So the man wants a hymen? What happens in most cases is that a news reporter gets information about a strange that that someone has done and then they report it as what everyone does. Most people thought every woman in Afghanistan did not want to wear that veil that they cover their faces with. however, most of them in Western countries still insist on wearing those veils. my point is that most of these things are about making mountains out of mole hills.

Which research have you conducted and how many know people who have been so treated? Answer simple question and you come up with conjectures. I know a guy who married his wife and they already agreed as to what profession was good for the woman to be in for the sake of the family. However, the woman decided that, after a little more qualifications, she wanted to go into another profession (better pay). the guy completely refused to have his wife change her profession and even the woman's family agreed that since it was something they had both known from the start, the woman should stay in her prefession rather than seeking better pay on another job. chikena. they have stayed married for over 2 decades now.
