avril04: also sorry will he get in lots of trouble for being in england so long with no visa as to whether he will even be allowed back thank you
If he leaves voluntarily then he will only get about a year ban or so but getting married to a British citizens overrides that but he has to tell the truth during his spouses visa application.

lol.. There was this documentary last year or two where a female recruiter and Ray Lewis (Borris Johnson's former deputer mayor) where trying to get two folks into work. The oyibo woman told her protegee straight up that he needed to get rid of his 'innit' accent in order to work in the financial industry. She even went further to tell the young man that she actually changes her accent to the upper class oyibo type when she is conversing with top notch business contacts.

I don't like descrimination, but its real.
Sadly that is the bitter truth. You will see typical example when you travel to a place like Bradford, most of the businesses there are owned by Asians and workers are Asian as well, majority of workers in city council there are Asians because you have Asians in a higher positions.

avril04: yes i did get to bottom of it thx i found out that in 2007 he came on a 6 month tourist visa sponsored by his brother who is now in nigeria english born by nigerian parents ..anyway that not being the point also his brother has a not so good criminal record resulting in them not being in contact anymore ...so yes he was going to get his uncle to sponsor a new visa but thats not possible although i dont see how any visa is possible when he has been living in england illegally for 5 yrs !! not good i did tell him also he has been working illegally ....so is there a way to sort out a new visa for him or does he need to volunteer to go home ...ps he is not a bad person but has made very bad decisions and a made a mess of the situation i know thx avril04

Absolutely not, i'm not in anyway calling him a bad person but its only fair that he tells you the truth then you know how to work things out with him.

The only way of sorting the whole mess out is through marriage but it wouldn't be possible in the UK, you have to get married to him in Nigeria (if that is the decision both of have made) then he applies for spouse visa from Nigeria to re-enter the UK.

beejaybida: @justwise, you mean I will fill only one form for the 3 of us? That means a single application accompanied by 3 passports and visa fees for 3 of us? Tnx.
In GENERAL VISITOR visa application form, you will see sections where you will be asked whether you are travelling with your wife and kids, then you will be asked to provide their details.

queensmith: innit on a cv? undecided undecided

The way you speak, may not in any way impede the job or reflect your level of competence.

Granted, you need an excellent vocabulary if you are going to lecture english, but if you are an it programmer, a statistician, or even if you are marketing a massager in elephant and castle self. How will 'innit' affect your work?

It can even be of benefit when you are expected to relate to the people you work with, there are all sorts of people and personalities in the work place in this country. Diversity is appreciated, I've met waaay too many chavy sounding male professionals to believe 'innit' will not get you a job. When people that can barely speak english get jobs? abeg.
Not in CV, your CV may get you to interview stage, while your language at the interview could end your dream of landing that job.

Yes certain jobs that has to do with public awareness/relation in a specific area of the community, 'innit' or 'cockney accent' will give you an advantage if that is the common language in that community.

You will only submit one original marriage certificate and one application as a family, there is no need to submit separate applications.

SegsBoogs: Hi thebaft,

Just read through your detailed posts here....very informative. Could you please let me know if the passport extension carries the old number in the new passport issued.

Thanks for your prompt feedback.
Passport extension carries the same number, they will only stamp the same passport indicating that the passport has being extended to another 5yrs. You can only extend passport once, if that expires then you go for re-newer where you will be given a complete new passport with a new number.

queensmith: Well obviously when you're at work you should be able to conduct yourself in a professional enough manner, I have to admit, I have seen many 'innit' boys and 'essex' girls with good jobs I think it's all part of life here in the UK.

You won't automatically be discredited for speaking a certain way (unless the interviewer is classist)

Actually its possible, with the 'high' rate of unemployment, certain thing like that will get your CV in the bin.

Its not, the use of innit at every end of sentence makes it boring, irritating to listen to.

queensmith: I think it's an attention thing, when i'm speaking to someone with an african accent i automatically change to an african accent. If im speaking to anyone else i speak normal, its reflex for me but i think its just to blend in to different environments.
On the other hand, when someone with a very african accent tries to pull off 'phone' like dragging or singing words it's damn irritating,. And that includes when these african artists (with very concentrated accents) try to pull off american accents, they sound ridiculous.
Do they not realise they sound ridiculous? Meanwhile some people, like wole soyinka, that guy on channels, all the posh rich kids!, pull off african accents in a fantastic manner,

Isn't that the whole point of slang? Overusing the words you are used to!
I don't think so, moderate use of it should be ok, i can't stand people who ends everything they say by 'innit'

I've been scratching my head trying to understand why. Even me i dey vex some times wen 9ja dey try speak oyibo. What irritates me is when people over use some street slangs, 'innit' for example

larryhomie: I am not related to the family in any way. I run into the kid, verified the situation and tried to help. I put up causefundr to help Baby Kelechi and see that we get him his surgery. All we can do now is help, hope and pray that people come through. We've raised quite some money and its seriously impressive. I hope we can meet the target so he leaves the country by next week. I am already talking to the Doctors and consultants so we can get him a hospital, transfer his medical records and so on.
Why not allow people to donate to the hospital directly so that they will manage the fund on behalf of the family rather than paying into private bank account of an individual?

Travel › UKBA Staff Are Rejecting African Visas Unfairly - Independent Report by justwise(mod): 7:09am On Jun 15, 2012
UKBA staff 'unfairly rejecting' African visas, report finds

UK Border Agency staff processing visa applications from Africa are "acting unfairly" and wrongly refusing entry to the UK, an independent report claims.

Chief inspector to the UKBA, John Vine, said many visas were incorrectly rejected after employees "disregarded or misinterpreted" evidence.

Some applicants were being refused for failing to provide information that had not been originally requested, he said.

The agency said it took the findings "seriously" and would improve training.

Mr Vine's inspection ran between May and July 2011, examining the applications handled at four UKBA posts in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya and Croydon, south London - which deals with Algerian-based applications.

He reported claims by UK Embassy staff in Algeria that the visa delays had caused "reputational damage" to the UK.

And in a review of 135 visa applications from Nigeria, his report found the UKBA had made a "serious error" after 14 cases had accidentally received "indefinite leave to enter the UK" - rather than the usual 27-month limit.

In some cases, it found UKBA staff had failed to retain documents backing up their decisions.

Various reasons for visa rejections were listed in the report. In one case, an applicant wishing to visit his uncle in the UK was turned down because they had different family names.

'Frustrating'
Visas to the UK enable successful applicants to stay and work in the country for two years, with an option to apply for permanent residency at the end of that period.

UKBA's visa bases in Abuja, Nigeria; in Pretoria, South Africa; and Nairobi, Kenya had "performed well" to meet customer service targets, Mr Vine found.

But staff at Croydon's Visa Section in the UK had been "poor" in processing applications made in Algiers, Algeria.

Mr Vine said that little progress had been made by the UKBA in a number of areas, even though recommendations had been made in previous inspections.

"This is especially frustrating", he said, "considering the agency has accepted the recommendations, and yet I continue to identify the same issues.

"I would now like to see these recommendations being embraced by the agency without delay to ensure that there is a real improvement in the quality and consistency of decision making."

A UKBA spokesman said the agency was prioritising improvement.

He said: "We take the independent chief inspector's findings seriously and are making reforms, which include providing detailed guidance to applicants and improving the training for staff handling visa applications.

"The UKBA must offer a high quality service for genuine applicants while ensuring that those who do not meet the immigration rules are prevented from entering the UK," he added

stone4rock: I have finally picked up my US visa last week. sorry i have been unable to share my experience since then based on my busy schedules.
Where do i start from hmmmmmm, God is ever faithful;
i actually forgot my GTbank visa payment receipt in the house still God was merciful. my interview was scheduled for 8:30am having gone thru series of procedural stages my number was eventually called around 12:30pm at window 2..meanwhile the dark complexion brat at window 2 wasn't in her good office 2 issue visa, needless do i have 2 pinpoint that she virtually rejected every other individual that appeared before her. while the white guy at window 1
was issuing visa though he was bombarding most folks with questions but d fact remains that he was friendly..
while i was still hoping to be called upon by a cheerful CO there and then my number popped up at window 2..
"my own don finish 2day"(i droned).

CO: Good afternoon sir, may i have your passport plz.
Me: yea Goodday (i pass the passport thru)
CO: Why do u want to visit the Us?
Me: To honour my family friend's invitation, he has asked me to visit him and his family in d US.
CO: how long has he been in the US?
Me: 3yrs
CO: how long have you known him?
Me: 6yrs
CO: how did he become an immigrant?
Me: Via DV lottery.
CO: does he have kids?
Me: yea he has 2 kids.
CO: where do you work?
Me: i work with .......Nig. Com. ltd
CO: how much do u earn?
Me: i earn about ..........6 digit
CO: are you married?
Me: no, but i shud be married by october 2012..
CO: oh dats nice, fake smile...
Me: within myself (abi u won marry me ni?)..lol
CO: have you traveled outside Nigeria?
Me: sure
CO: where did u travel to?
ME: slight cough, i have been to italy for 3 days, i travel to germany for 6days, i went to the UK for 14 days.
CO: who did u visit in Germany?
Me: i didnt know when i said my sister, whereas it was a family friend i went to visit, i need to spice it up so i added that my sister is a german citizen..(far from the truth).
CO: have you ever imported any goods from the US?
Me: Never
CO: who will sponsor you?
ME: no 1, i will sponsor myself ofcourse.
CO: can i see your bank statement?
Me: i brought it out and handed it to her.
CO: flip thru the pages for 1min and returned it back to me.
Me: kool
CO: Magic Words: Sir could you pickup your visa at ikeja collection center on monday.
ME: Sure (smile)..within me (na u won pick am up for me before? WINCH GURL).
GOD THANK YOU OOOO.
My candid advice is :US visa is not as difficult as people think,i was opportune to sit in-front where i could listen to several folk's interviews.
the basic questions are: why do u want to go to the US?
where do u work?, are you married?, have you traveled out of Nigeria?,
where do u work? describe the nature of your job?, how much do u earn?
These questions are the Preliminary and quite common.
your response is what gives birth to other questions.
average interview time is 5-8mins..
based on my travel history and nature of my job i have a broad knowledge about travel stuffs. if you like to know any other thing about my interview or travel advice you can ask me on this thread,
NA GOD KNOW PASS.

1luv..
I have edited your post and you should know the part i removed.

Thanks for sharing your experience, this is enough for anybody who needs help.
