EducationRe: What It Takes To Be Good In Maths. Lets Talk. by Kadata(m): 4:17pm On Dec 29, 2010
First I want to commend the poster for this timely topic despite the flood of admission threads that has wrecked this section.
In my honest opinion, if we are able to know why some students are good at Mathematics we can as well give a guess at why some aren't.
Mathematics does not only involve solving. Solving is in fact the end-product thereof. Being good in Mathematics requires an understanding of the basic principles involved in a sub-field, and being able to apply those principles in problem solving. Many students who do not see Mathematics from this angle tend to allow its seemingly obscure nature to becloud their reasoning.
Aside, the pre-requisite of efficiency is consistent practice. If some students practiced more of Mathematics consistently, it wouldn't be difficult to them afterwards. Before the show room is the work shop.
Maths isn't an abstract subject as most students would think. Maths uses your intellectual reasoning. So a reasonable student should find Mathematics reasonably simple to grasp.

I'd rather be a pretender than to pretend to be ungrateful. Or worse still , ungrateful in all sense of the word.
# When you despise the man whose seed was found worthy enough as a portal for your birth, I wonder what on earth you'd ever appreciate.

I'd be watching Nairaland very keenly. Maybe someday your kid would come with his/her own story. And we'd begin to wonder who was worse. And for those not planning to have kids, . . .well, that's your f¤¤ken business.

@OP I'm not saying that you'r dirty, and I'm not saying that you're not. But a stinky partner is certainly not a flaw. It's a bad habit.

You shouldn't and wouldn't classify their action as being stupid. After all, every action is intrinsically relative depending on the circumstances in question. And lest you forget, they have a right to 'do what they like' provided it doesn't affect others negatively. So far, I haven't seen how it has.

EducationRe: University Degree Is Only For Gaining Self Confidence by Kadata(m): 9:32am On Dec 12, 2010
The last time I checked, self-esteem was very unrelated with the level of education acquired. For God sake, there are graduates with a poor sense of worth about themselves. So, restructure your argument.

EducationRe: How Will One Be A 'hotcake' In University Just Because He/she Is Good In Maths/furthermaths? by Kadata(m): 12:26am On Dec 10, 2010
Specifically, I don't understand the context in which you're expressing the word 'hotcake'. Allbeit, let me assume that you mean 'outstanding' .
In standard universities across Nigeria, Mathematics has become integrated into most faculties especially Engineering, Social/Management Sciences< Economics, Accounting, Banking etc>, Med/Surg <pre-medical yr only>. Even some science-related departments under the Faculty of Education do Mathematics.
Now the funny thing is that nobody designates it as Mathematics or Further Mathematics. Whatever it is called, it is a combination of the two.
In high school, I always avoided Further Maths classes. I had this notion that medical school doesn't require those strange stuffs. But when I got into the pre-medical year, I met the Calculus I always ran away from. This time around, I sat up and tackled it, even got an 'A' in the process. Now I wondered why I avoided it all those while. It's important.

EducationRe: I'm 33 And I Need Visa Advice From You All - God Bless by Kadata(m): 12:10am On Dec 10, 2010
@Most:
but i'm thinking - if i have to live up to age 50 or 60 , how would i salvage that time.
what if i live to be 70 or 80?
the education if for the future years i got left and i think it pails in comparison.
i'm not shaken or of low esteem because i believe your mental and physical properties
don't alter from their true form
e.g you'll look the same facially 40 years from now,
einstein would still be einstein - his physical properties - at any age
so would wole soyinka still be able to write kongi even if he sufferd a 30 year set back
and winston churchill would still be himself even if he graduated late
so looking at age now and opting out - because after all i'm age x - is not smart.
jobs and money aint everything. sure i've suffered a terrible loss. but i think with better education i can still salvage the remaining years of my life. and i think the future is worth saving.
i just need to get out of this sick country into a conducive atmosphere where i can study and move on in life.then i don't care where i end up after that.
I just hope someone is reading.

#. . . . and because one Nigerian man misbehaved , then all Nigerian men are 'bushmen' right?? Hasty generalization. At least some Nigerian men are educated enough to detect a fallacy in your argument.
