I agree with you Idara. If I had not faced that, and if the second transmission did not fail, I would not have known.

Transmissions are updated from time to time - improved seals, valves, pistons, etc. For now, Ladipo is the option very body has, without really getting value for money.

But, quality rebuild is not cheap.

Valve body washed and cleaned. The next step would be to check all ports for leakages. If any is out of spec, it will be repaired. My chinko vacuum pump died on me without doing much . Need to get another soon - praying for time....

The accumulator pistons out. Notice they are all the same apart from the springs? The springs are color coded, but almost completely washed off as seen in the picture.

Accumulators to be removed for cleaning and inspection. Most standard kits come with a piston and o rings. Replace the most worn!

Below is the picture of the upper valves. It is important to lay them out as they are brought out. Mix them up at your peril They all must be out for cleaning, and also allow access to clean and inspect their bores. Mine was dirty! I noticed my transmission 'expert' retentioning two springs he could access - bad practice!

Sorry, no picture of the lower valves. That is where the primary pressure regulator valve resides. I missed to mark the OEM pressure setting has to be figured out. Anyways, the upper valvebody has more than twice the number of valves in the lower valvebody.

Next was to take out all the solenoids. But before then, each must be marked against its bore so they are not mixed up at reassembly. If you miss, there would be problems! It can even be as bad as your car driving in neutral

Valvebody taken apart, drained of oil, and being washed. Many will wonder why am using water. Yes, you can use hot water with all solenoids, valves, plungers and springs removed. I used dish washing soap. After using hot water, allow the valvebody parts to cool off on their own. If you pour cold water, you will risk thermal shock. The part pictured is the lower valvebody. The same method is used on the upper valvebody.

A rule is to ensure you get rid of all traces of water before putting them back together. Time and/or compressed air works.

Next, the filter and valve body itself removed. It is very important to pay attention to the screws. Some are guide, some (on the casing and covers) require adhesive on reassembly, etc...

I called many established auto shops, and none of them rebuilds transmissions. Everybody said 'replace the transmission; you are wasting your time trying to fix it'. I found it hard to stomach, especially when I hear '13 pin cannot be repaired; anybody that tells you he can fix it is trying to rip you off!'. My technical part kept telling me there is no mechanical equipment that cannot be repaired, albeit at card level.

When all attempts to repair it failed, I decided to buy another one. That one too, got fried, even though I suspect poor installation job. Another one was procured, and the vehicle eventually got on the road again. The truth? I have never experienced the drive and quietness of my original transaxle. Now, I know where the issue is coming from. If I knew what I now know, it would have been easier.

Before my troubles, I had no idea what a valve body does (believe it or not, I never heard about it! ). When the auto mechanic told me the problem was from my valve body, I started searching the internet. My first forage into the world of automatic transmissions! I was helpless, so are many other car owners; I hate helplessness! So, I devoted resources to study auto transmissions, and enrolled for training.

The truth is that MOST transmissions at Ladipo either have issues, or close to having one. Nobody replaces a working transmission! If you get one removed from accidented vehicle, you are happy, but don't know the effect of the impact on the transmission. The engine is much more tolerant to impact than the transmission, given the fact that the transmission is built to much higher precision.

Okay, no more stories! Lets get to business!

I had told my mechanic to secure my old transmission as I plan to repair it. He never believed me - 'Oga, na dirty work o!'. Two weeks ago, I went and carried it from him, and started looking at it. Sorry I am stingy with pictures, dirty oily hands and a white camera dont mix well. Wifey helped with the shots. Meanwhile, the transmission expert that worked on it told me he had changed the 'fibers' (friction disks), but I have realized I am the first to take off the bell housing

For me, the first place to start is the valve body, as that is the root cause of 90% issues with automatic transmissions. If you don't fix the valve body, you will keep toasting your rebuilds.

In the picture below, the sump has been removed, and the solenoid cables disconnected. The filter is to be discarded.

Kingreign, the car is in Lagos and its 4 cylinder. What surprise me most is that I jut purchased it as "Tokunbo" less than two weeks ago.

Make sure your cooling system is not clogged. If it checks out, there are issues with your valve body. I could help you repair it but, you must have loads of patience.

It depends.

If the current being switched by the relay is same as the one switching the relay, nothing is achieved. You will need relay only when you need to drive power stronger than your current switching capacity.

Note that poor job on this would lead to other electrical problems - engine and/or transmission malfunction.

I think you have completely missed the chance to think through the scenario.

First of all, very few people make north of N5m per year in Lagos. From my little analysis some months back, even in the highly desirable and supposedly high paying banking sector that is employing the elite, only between 30-60% of their staff make between N4-9m per annum. And 10-20% make north of N9m per year. So imagine what most ordinary Lagosians make.

Secondly, those that will make N6m-N7m a year and/or have been living in the same address for 10 years plus are not likely to be young or single. They are likely to be married with kids, hence they will need something like a 3-bedroom apartment except they want to severely compromise like I pointed out with my Ajegunle example.

I only saw one case of a 2-bedroom flat for N600K in Surulere, most are around N700K+. And the 3-bedroom are in the range of N800K to N1.2m.

Most single guys and girls (those going for 2 bedroom flats) are nowhere near making even N4m a year.

If you want to be paying 10% of your salary a year as rent, you will be living in a place well below your class, be sharing, be staying in a BQ or be living very far away (e.g. Sangotedo, Ikotun, Badagry, Iyana Ipaja etc) from the commercial nerve centres where the corporate jobs are (the ones that pay N4m+).

Someone making N4m plus and living like the above is compromising severely in Nigeria.

I have not yet even gone into the quality of the house (or the street it is on) that will be rented out cheaply enough for it to meet the 10% criteria.

So it is quite tough to be paying only 10% of your salary in a commercial city except you do compromise your standard severely.

Most 3 bed (the norm in Nigeria) goes for about N900K there. A range of N800K to N1.2m is what is the norm, although some even go as far as N2.5m.

The cheapest I have seen there is N600K for 2 bed.

Go and ask people what they are paying, and for how long they have been occupying their abodes. I know people who have been living at the same address for upwards of 10 years. You talk like a property agent, not a tenant - different realities.

Most intermittent transmission issues are electrical. Typical hard failure sets in gradually, and progressively. They do not come and go, once the trigger conditions are met.

@mods: pls help me with my Toyota Avalon 98 model. I noticed mild jerks frm gear 1 to 2 a while ago, it later graduated into having to rev the engine so high with little acceleration. A mechanic askd me to change d transmission oil frm the seahorse I was using before to Mobil dextron II which I did and d problem was over. After a month i noticed the gear was slow is responding to acceleration sometimes. The car also started overheating. Sometimes too, the car wudnt climb a hill, I usually change to D2 to move up any small height. But this problem comes n go! I attempted scanning the car, but was told that the brainbox has been changed by d dealer and so it can never be scanned (it uses a Sienna engine), that its only guesses that can solve the problem.
A mecho checked d transmission oil and said its not smelling burnt. Another one said its smelling burnt, am just confused.
Pls what do I do?

Does this happen when the car is cold also? You can scan the car. Look for a technician with the appropriate scanner. Sniff the atf yourself; is it burnt? The mechanics do not have any sensors installed in their noses - you can do it too.

I have a 2001 honda accord
Gave me code P0730 meaning faulty shift control system.

It's sharp has soon has I engage it on R but when engaged on D it takes about 5secs to engage and when it does it lazy and then disengages on the verge of shifting to gear two. After that it's hard to shift to 3. I changed the transmission fluid to honda dw1 last year December and have covered about 25k kilometers since den. Wat do I do next.

Check the pressure switches and solenoids, paying attention to the second clutch switch (it should have a green connector). If they all checkout, you are facing an internal failure.

Why is the dealer trying to talk you into buying the Benz instead of your preferred Camry? Did you seek his opinion?
