In March 1993, while on a trip to Sudan, Carter was preparing to photograph a starving toddler trying to reach a feeding center when a vulture landed nearby. Carter reported to have taken the picture, because it was his "job title", and leaving. He came under criticism for failing to help the girl.(The photograph alarmed the world of the urgency of the situation in Sudan).

Sold to the New York Times, the photograph first appeared on March 26, 1993. Hundreds of people contacted the newspaper to ask the fate of the girl. The paper reported that it was unknown whether she had managed to reach the feeding center. In 1994, the photograph won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography.

On 27 July 1994 Carter drove to the Braamfontein Spruit river, near the Field and Study Centre, an area where he used to play as a child, and took his own life by taping one end of a hose to his pickup truck’s exhaust pipe and running the other end to the passenger-side window. He died of carbon monoxide poisoning, aged 33. Portions of Carter's suicide note read:

"I am depressed ... without phone ... money for rent ... money for child support ... money for debts ... money!!! ... I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings and corpses and anger and pain ... of starving or wounded children, of trigger-happy madmen, often police, of killer executioners ... I have gone to join Ken [recently deceased colleague Ken Oosterbroek] if I am that lucky."

There's a group of 4 journalists who were bent on exposing the brutality of apartheid and , they were known as the Bang-Bang Club. This thread is about one of the photojournalists, namely Kevin Carter.

Carter was the first to photograph a public execution by "necklacing" in South Africa in the mid-1980s. The victim was Maki Skosana, who had been accused of having a relationship with a police officer. He later spoke of the images; "I was appalled at what they were doing. But then people started talking about those pictures... then I felt that maybe my actions hadn't been at all bad. Being a witness to something this horrible wasn't necessarily such a bad thing to do."

Do you personally
think PhotoJournalists should be questioned about not taking active measures to assist the victims they may come across on the field and secondly do you think the truth worth dying for. These people continue to put their lives at risk to bring us the inside story. Does society expect them to act "humanely" on every assignment or should they be exempted as they are simply doing they're jobs by capturing photographs for the world to know the urgency of the crisis in that combat zone?

It's simple. Women are superficial. They choose looks over substance. They buy the book for the pretty cover. Sex is business and they've got to sell it for something. Some demand fancy dinners and being driven in nice cars while others never leave the high school mentality of dating the popular guy. And they all bow down in their materialistic heels to the bad boy.

Primal instinct, despite centuries of evolution, is alive and well in us all. Instinctively, a tough guy will protect his woman while she gives birth and nurtures the offspring. But it has moved from our heads to our hips where it is now little more than a sexual impulse. It holds little validity in any form these days - after all, your average CEO, doctor, or lawyer, isn't bench pressing 400 pounds.

But hold those angry emails, I acknowledge that women do not hold the monopoly on being materialistic, superficial, and sex-driven. Men proudly pioneered the sport in the first place and still get the gold medal. But the wangs play a different game - a game of acting.

You see, men act as though they want to get to know the cute blonde and find out what kind of person she is. Really, the guy is aiming to get her panties off and do the horizontal boogie until he's good and satisfied, at which point he'll make a sandwich from her kitchen, and then leave to do it again. Am I being too blunt? No, just honest.

You are right bro. Tribalism is our continents biggest problem. Its just everywhere. Maybe our continents progress is halted back because there's so many languages and tribes and our leaders are not spreading the message of tolerance and accepting our diverse cultures. I know what the poster is reffering to when he/she says South Africans on SA forums have posted some horrible things, I've seen it there but not on this site so far, so I guess I understand where he/she is coming from. undecided

Amaka G29: Lol, you guys are silly. The point is the propriety of the attire in the social setting. At a beach everyone is exposed, but many well wrap towels around themselves or be covered by the water. In a house, there is still a respectability to be maintained. Bras and panties are intimate and not meant to be seen by strangers. There is a sexuality attached. Bikinis are made to be see (bright flashy colors). To be honest, I get a little shy in bikinis.

You need to adopt a positive attitude, the law of attraction is vital for you to know. I'd suggest some motivational books or seminars.

Seriously though, these presumed roots no matter how true are National drawbacks with no real benefit to Nigeria and Nigerians but to create more division than we are already saddled with. Perhaps their only benefit would be making our history books heavier which i'm not even sure is good to everyone. The lesser we know, the better. Of course historians would have me hanged for saying that but come on, The challenge is the future not the past!

Ha!ha!ha!ha!ha! You're so observant! I guess we act weird cause we mostly feel really crappy. You can imagine what its like, being like a baby wearing a nappy... Can you imagine going through that... Its not something to get excited about.

You basically only miss that when you were worried that you have an unplanned pregnancy and then it turns out to be a false alarm. Only then do you thank god for being on the red robot.

That's so true , most of us don't adapt easily. I hope I'll get to a stage when I have adapted. That's one part I hate about being a woman. You get so emotional on those days , like everything in the world is so wrong and no one understands you.

Sometimes it makes me feel as if on those days I'm not as competent as my male counterparts in terms of productivity to my organization.

I can't wait for Menopause . grin
