Business / Nigeria's New World Trade Center Poised To Send Its Economy Sky High -CNN by kinharold(m): 10:59pm On Sep 07, 2015
(Why is this only from CNN?)

(CNN) Nigeria's capital city of Abuja is about to get a new heart: a brand new World Trade Center complex.

The development is expected to open to the public early next year after the completion of the first phase of construction. It will join a network of 323 locations in 89 countries, started in 1970 with the inauguration of the first World Trade Center in New York City.

Funded by local and foreign financial institutions, as well as private investors, to the tune of 200 billion Nigerian Naira, or just over $1 billion, the WTC Abuja will be the largest mixed-use development in West Africa.

WTC Abuja has been under development since 2010, on a lot spanning over six million square feet in the Central Business Area of the capital.

The location offers easy access to the city center and the airport, with a dual-carriage highway surrounding the site and a new light rail system currently under construction.
World Trade Center Association Timeline

For business tenants, though, the most important connections will be those with the global network of 750,000 entrepreneurs that make up the World Trade Centers Association (WTCA).

"One of the missions of WTC Abuja is to improve trade relations between Nigeria and the rest of the world," Vinay Mahtani, CEO of the site's developer, Lagos-based Churchgate Group, told CNN.

"For example, it will enable international businesses to make investments in our community. Ties will be forged between government agencies, non-governmental organizations and international corporations, and the additional business that is captured within the walls of the World Trade Center will provide tax revenues to government which can be used to improve the welfare of the people."

A city made to be capital

Abuja is Nigeria's capital city, a role for which it was purposely built starting in 1976, much in the same way as Brasilia for Brazil and Canberra for Australia.

Its physical location in the middle of the country is a good metaphor for its neutral role of unity.

It is now the fourth largest urban area in Nigeria, with impressive growth rates.

Abuja replaced Lagos as the capital on 12 December 1991, although the coastal city remains the largest in the whole of Africa, when considering its massive metropolitan population of 21 million.

After a recent revision in the way it measures its GDP, Nigeria now boasts Africa's biggest economy, having surpassed South Africa with a 2014 estimate of $568 billion.

With strong growth rates in recent years, Nigerian economy is flourishing, even though its reliance on oil exports -- the country is Africa's largest producer and the sixth in the world -- makes it susceptible to the volatile nature of that market.

Construction challenges

Initially projected to open in 2013, the WTC Abuja has gone through various design phases, and construction itself hasn't been free of challenges.

"For example certain areas of the project have had to be redesigned as we repositioned ourselves in order meet the ever-changing consumer and market needs. We have also faced logistical issues such as congestion in the ports, which has meant our building materials arrived at site behind schedule," said Mahtani.

Construction is now nearing the end of the first phase, which comprises the residential and commercial towers. The former will offer luxury apartments with modern amenities, while the latter will accommodate businesses of various sizes, with offices ranging from 100 to 1,440 square meters.

The buildings, at 24-storeys each, are set to define the capital's skyline: the Commercial Tower is the tallest office building in Abuja, while the Residential Tower is the tallest residential building in Nigeria.

Future phases include the construction of a shopping mall and a 37-storey hotel, which will be among the tallest skyscrapers in the continent.

Upsides and downsides

Nigeria, which has attracted the largest amount of foreign investment capital in sub-Saharan Africa since 2007, is set to gain international prestige from the development: "There is no doubt that Abuja and Lagos will benefit tremendously from high end ‎commercial and residential real estates," Adekunle Salau, Ernst & Young Advisory Leader ‎for West Africa, told CNN.

"My expectation is that if this is executed to plan, Abuja will be able to host world class conferences and compete favorably with Johannesburg and Cape town for international events.

"It may also moderate the cost of hotels and rents in Abuja, but more importantly it should add significantly to the economic development of the capital, creating employment in the service and retail sectors.

"The downside is that it can also be artificially priced, thereby continuing heat up the already high cost of Abuja properties and secondly, the amenities ‎may not be developed to the quality expected from the WTA brand," said Salau.

You can decide to wallow in 'wailing'. But for the first time key positions (that we have politicised) are given to people with little or no background in politics. Who does that?

All I can pray for is the will for PMB to carry on with his good intentions. You just can't doubt they're good. To think that APC 'bigwigs' Had little or no influence in the selection still amazes me.
When He appointed a southerner to head the NNPC, no one complained o.

P.S I don't care if the appointees are green in their fields of appointment. The 'good' intention is all that matters.
I also don't care if they're all northerners. If 'Nigeria' comes out better for it...good roads, regular power supply...all the dividends of good governance...then to Hell with 'multi-diversity. For once let us THINK AS HUMANS.

Pls be objective if you wanna quote me....else!!

...and you believe this category of people can only be found in the North, right? So between Engr. Babachir David Lawal the SFG and Ogbonnaya Onu who, in your shallow thinking mind is better suitable for the position. Well, let's be watching, while God is waiting.

Hello guys, I have been away for a really long time on this thread and haulage post in general. I have been in the haulage thing for long and has seen the good, the bad and the really ugly side of it.

I am writing now particularly because of all the calls and contacts I have been receiving especially for advice and consultations (I appreciate them all). Please, note that I am no into areas of haulage that include long trailer/trucks such as Flatbeds, Bucket backs etc. while can give counsel to those areas (to the best of my knowledge); for now I only work with

1. Dump Trucks (Ten Tyre trucks for Construction materials)
2. Garbage Compactor Trucks (For Waste Management operations).

Also, note that my operations are now majorly in Port Harcourt and Asaba area.

Right now, I urgently need Garbage compactor trucks for lease and manage with a great weekly/monthly payout.

And a waste of Presidential Man hour. Imagine the President always coming late to attend to critical national issues and he says; Sorry, I was caught up in traffic. Politics / Delta 2015: The Dilemma Of The Uvwiemuge Declaration On The Urhobo Nation. by kinharold(m): 12:08am On Apr 09, 2015
DELTA 2015: THE DILEMMA OF THE UVWIEMUGE DECLARATION ON THE URHOBO NATION.

The Uvwemugie Declaration and the stand of the UPU on the Delta State Governorship Election 2015 has become a curse rather than a blessing to Emerhor and Ogboru, the two main Urhobo sons in the race. It has taken the greatness away from Great Ogboru. Before now (in previous elections), Chief Ogboru has always been seen as a man of the people, the People’s General is what he was fondly called. He was seen as a state leader that is trying to bring change from the establishment and he enjoyed support from almost every part of the state.

But in the 2015 elections, following the firm stand of dominance and oppression by the UPU (Urhobo Progressive Union) over other ethnic zones in the state, and the quest to produce a Governor of Urhobo nation rather than Delta state, has greatly reduced Ogboru to a “tribesman” instead of a “statesman”. He has now been reduced to a leader in Urhobo nation instead of a leader in Delta state. His influence and support base has now been cornered to Delta Central instead of the whole of Delta state. Unfortunately, he still does not hold the four aces in that zone.

The Uvwiemuge Declaration and the stand of the UPU is now becoming a curse rather than a blessing to the Urhobo nation. The UPU strategy and hope was based on GEJ’s re-election. They declared support for GEJ while expecting him to support their avowed plan not to vote for PDP at the state level but unfortunately the President refused to support any plan/strategy that is against his own party. That actually was the first setback for the UPU. And the straw that broke the camel’s back was the honourabe loss of GEJ at the presidential election.

Without GEJ at the presidency what strategy and permutation will UPU now adopt in facing the reality on ground? The UPU is facing a gigantic dilemma, akin to lying between the Devil and the deep blue sea. Political watchers expect UPU to prevail on one of their sons (Otega or Ogboru) to step down but that isn’t an easy pull, not with the faction and division in the Union. The main challenge is, who will drop for who? APC maybe at the presidency but there is no APC in Delta state and Otega does not carry any political weight even in his own LGA. Great Ogboru has said according to sources that he will never step down for a political minor like Otega, that he’d rather do that for Dr. Okowa, the PDP candidate. On the other hand, it is difficult for them to support Ogboru, considering the fact that Labour party is seen as part of PDP, which they have vowed not to support. Moreso, there is no Labour party at the national level.

Analysts say that the better option for UPU and the Urhobo nation is to re-strategize and align with the PDP to vote for Okowa, which from all indication is a much more qualified candidate coupled with the fact that Dr. Okowa already enjoys statewide acceptance and popularity. This is so that the Urhobo nation will not loss out at both ends or make themselves an enemy of the incoming administration of PDP/Okowa in Delta state.

Either I like Sen. Okowo or not, other candidates don't have more than 10% of winning Delta governorship seat.

Politics / Jimi Agbaje 58, Is Too Old To Govern Lagos State --Fashola. How Old Is GMB? by kinharold(m): 12:13pm On Jan 17, 2015
Governor Fashola while campaigning for the APC governorship candidate,

Mr. Ambode. According to the Governor: "...the task of governing Lagos State was daunting and needed vigour on the part of the person at the helm of affairs, RECALLING that in 2007 when he took over governance at age 44, he could count the number of grey hair on his head.

“Today, at 52, I am counting the number of black hair on my head. Akinwunmi Ambode is the man that can do it. If you put an old man there, he cannot do it. If you call him in the night, he may not pick your calls... (Tribune.com, January, 15, 2015)”

Now, is it not funny that this same Governor Fashola (SAN) who is now questioning the capability of Mr Jimi Agbaje's performance on the basis of age (Jimi Agbaje is 58) has been going around campaigning for the APC Presidential flag-bearer, General Buhari who is 72 years old already. This position is not only paradoxical in nature as some have described it, it is also ludicrous in my humble opinion.

What Governor Fashola is indirectly saying is this: A man of 72 is strong and vibrant enough to oversee the whole of Nigeria, even if that man is already manifesting the basic signs of old-age...like forgetting the correct names of his running mate that he sees daily and talks to daily...but a man of Jimi Agbaje's physical stamina at 58 years is considered too old to lead a single state like Lagos state. While this postulation by Governor Fashola might make a great headline in the world of "political flip-flopping," let me also add that what Governor Fashola has inevitably conveyed to Nigerians is that he really does not believe in General Buhari's capacity to function at an optimal frequency.

Hypocrisy or what do you call this?

If APC that is preaching Change is presenting Buhari; it's either they are lying about it or they just don't understand the Change Nigerians are asking for. We all are looking for Change but not a backward movement. His last outing in governance was his dictatorial reign of 1983_85. Meaning that even voters below 30 years of age or even 40 cannot connect with that regime. He has no democratic experience that the youths of today can relate with. Kwankwaso could have been a better choice.

We want Change, a change to intellectuals and youthful technocrats, a forward-movement Change but unfortunately, come 2015, GEJ is still our "best" option among the available. We now have to wait for probably another four years for change to come. I cry for us the youths.
