Speaking with both sides of your mouth. First you say Americans are adopting Anglo/English names. Secondly you say people tend to keep their native names
.

tend to keep their name is a desire that they(the immigrants have not manage to pull off) they(immigrants) still fall for that old age cliche of having an Anglicize first name and their native surname which signifies their heritage.
Politics › Re: Indigine Vs Settler by KnowAll(m): 5:08pm On Feb 05, 2011
I guess the dominant culture in Nigeria is also Anglo/English culture because a large population of Nigerians bear English names
Maybe 95% of igbo's bear colonialist first names,  Yorubas always have a Yoruba first name, middle name and surname. We are not part of that colo mentality that is common in the East. However, in England or the USA, Yoruba's have adopted to their new environment by bearing  English Christian name as their first name, names such as John Salako or John Fashanu are names common amongst Yoruba settlers  in the towns and cities of the UK.

This is a clear evidence of migrational attitudes, behavior and mannerism that only goes to put credence to my theory of ethnic migrants to the USA and UK adopting anglicize names in other to amalgamate with the host community which is understandable
.

Yes mr.Knowall Can you tell us what happens with Mr.Barak husein obama, how does his names adopt anglo-english and yet he is not just an american Indigine but the president?
Are u afraid of saying the truth since lagos is mentioned ? Ok take it another way round, All of us knows the true aborigine of lagos state, now why not the yorubas adobt LAGOS ABORIGINE'S local name and why is revise the case here? my dear stand on the truth no matter who it favors. pls answer my question am waitin.
Barack Obama falls within the 10 - 15% who kept their native names. In fact these days more people tend to try to keep their native names, but given that the USA is an Anglo speaking nation and judging by the poor pronunciation by English speakers of names and words that they are not familiar to them, there is still that urge to Anglicize one's name and even surname to some extent, no hard and fast rule like the good old days but it is still widely common practice.

Lagos Aborigene names are Yoruba aboriginal names u cannot divorce a con-join twin, separating Lagos from her motherland is like cutting the head of a snake and claiming the head is " head" and body is called snake. Severing one part from the other and giving it a name or synonym would be an exercise in futility.

The post above me is just silly to say the least. You don't have to assimilate into any language to be accepted as part of the community. Do you know that there's a difference between lagos culture and yoruba culture? Go and tell americans that they have to start changing their names to Indian names to be accepted.
The dominant culture in America is the Anglo/English culture no wonder 85% or 90% of Americans have an Anglo/English first name. There is no difference b/w Yoruba culture & Lagos Culture, this is not an Igbo/Ikwerre thing. Yorubas are one even the ones across the border in Rep of Benin are all one.
Politics › Re: Indigine Vs Settler by KnowAll(m): 1:14pm On Feb 05, 2011
[size12pt]The only way settlers can be accepted as indigenes is by way of assimilation into the host community. It would be foolhardy and de-sensitizing for a group who have settled in a new land to continue practicing ways of life and cultures that are alien to the locals. Firstly by sticking to your tradition and way of life u would not only stick-out like a sore thumb in the host community, but in times of hard-ship and other anti-social asunder these rather peculiar group of people would be targeted and picked upon as a/the group that should be punished for societies' inadequacies  and downfall.

By Assimilating Igbo indigenes that have settled in Lagos would have names like

Olakunle Okechukwu, olafemi Emaka, and of course well known Rotimi Amechi - Names like that gives the settlers the an assurance knowing that this lady/Gentleman although with a somewhat foreign sounding name is as good a lagosian as a Dosumu or Kosoko,  the Igbo sounding surname points to the person's heritage but the Yoruba first name put credance and validity  to the fact this person is a Lagosian whose parents have settled in Lagos a long time and this individual would actually feel at home amongst Yorubas in the SW than amongst his father's kith's and kin  from the SE.

This phenomena is common in America where immigrants into the so called new world  adopt Anglo-American first name, like Jack Montana, the name Montana gives a not too discerning person that vague idea that this individual is an "Italian or Latin American" this wild guess cannot be further from the truth.

The Hausas in Jos by now after settling in Jos for over 100 years,  should have adopted the Christian faith of the Beroms and not hold stubbornly to their old religion, how can the Beroms trust them when they still believe in " Mohammedism" and Jihadism.

The Tapa's in Lagos Island are fully integrated into that society because they have not only jettison their islamic first names but they have deliberately chosen for themselves  Yoruba first names in other to blend with the locals. " Demola Seriki" is a good example.

A name like "Ugochuckwu Opkara" would not hold it in Lagos but a name like Olusegun Opkpara gives the individual a duplicity that implies he has antecedents in both Yorubaland and Igboland and can exploit his/her new world to the best of his/her advantage.

Culture › Re: What Does Mahinmi Mean In Yoruba? by KnowAll(m): 8:28am On Feb 05, 2011
Yoruba is a very simple and easy language to learn more like swahili. Even thus the Eguns/fons are the majority tribe in Benin, but because of the addictive nature of the Yoruba language over the years a healthy trading partnership between Dahomey and Lagos has been well established and developed thereby making Yoruba the language of choice both for business and all manner of trade including slave trading

Yoruba which is suppose to be a side language in Benin has suddenly become the single denominator when people are communicating in Benin,  this explains the reason why staunch fons like Boni Yayi can speak this language, this does not mean the conversants are Yorubas, far from it, but what has happened is just like Ugandans who are not in the slightest way related to Swahili speakers, speaks this language which is not only alien to their country as a language of trade and commerce.

Also,  Just like in Ghana, the Accra people are Gas but the Ashanti language of Kumas, an Akan language,  has more-less become the de-facto single language in Ghana.

Everyone from Ewes in the East to Huasa in the North and Gas in Accra region, all speak Akan or the Kumasi language as a language of first instance.

Enugu can be expensive as well.

Business › Ghana To Build Elevated Mono-rail In Accra- Why Can’t Lagos Take A Cue by KnowAll(op): 10:56am On Feb 02, 2011
monorail system is being planned to help ease traffic congestion in the Accra Metropolis.

Dubbed “Greater Accra Transit System,” the project would operate on elevated beams in order not to disturb pedestrians and traffic.

The transit system would commence in phases and will include retail and commercial facilities, shopping malls, parking facilities, hotel business conferences, and beach resorts.

Dr Ron Watson, Transportation Engineer and Project Manager of Intercontinental Commerce Corporation, (ICC) USA briefing journalists in Accra on Friday said the transit system would operate from Danquah Circle and Kwame Nkrumah Circle, the Castle Drive and Ohene Gyan Sports Stadium.

He said the double straddle beam monorail would use electricity and ICC would supply its own energy systems for the project.

Dr Watson said transit problems in the cities were similar and that the increase of new buses on roads and construction of new roads could solve those issues.

He said over 40 per cent of the total income of workers was spent on transportation.

Dr Watson said the introduction of monorail systems had been the solution to traffic in Germany, United States, Japan and Egypt.

Throwing more light on the monorail system in Accra, he said the elevated monorail system would be eight miles with 16 stations during the first phase estimated at 1.5 billion dollars.

Dr Watson said the project would be financed 100 per cent from loans and equity contribution by ICC and provide full time jobs for 1,000 people after completion and 15,000 during construction period.

He said a mono rail train could carry the equivalent number of what 20 cars could carry and that would restore the choice to drop out of traffic congestion.

Dr Watson recalled that monorail system introduced since 1877 had not suffered any pedestrian fatalities pointing and that it was one of the safest and inexpensive modes of transport.

He explained that time between trains would be as low as every three minutes to every nine minutes depending on their need.

Dr Watson said so far construction for phase one of the project would be approximately between four to five years and as soon as ICC was through with the feasibility studies concluded within 12 months, it would start construction.

Mr E.J. Miller, President of ICC, said management had completed monorail systems in Cairo and Mecca for pilgrims.

He said ICC had been in Accra for the past two years and that they were happy to start with the project as soon an agreement was signed between the Ministries of Transport, Local Government and Rural Development and Justic

I am surprised Lagos despite the fact that land is at a premium the rail lines planned in Lagos are all land based.

I wish we can force them to debate for 12 hours with only two pure-water breaks, that will be so worth the amount we pay them for all those extra allowances.
It would amount to dericltion of duty by Aganga to engage Soludo in a debate about the intricacies of the CBN. Since Soludo was not the Finance Minister during OBJ and Yaradua's time, I think and I believe Soludo been an ordinary CBN Governor could not be privvy of all transactional dealings of the Ministry of Finance.

By Challenging Aganga to a debate, what is Soludo hoping to achieve and debate on, is it his own negligence and over-sight at the CBN  or information he is not privvy to. To debate something you assume is different from debating something you know.

I cannot recall Soludo informing us in his peice that Ngozi Iweala has supplied him with all the inside wheeling and dealings the FG embarked on when she was in charge of the ministry of finance, or is Soludo hoping and banking on using hearsay or second-hand information as his basis for a debate.

No sir. At inception, that project was to stop at Oyo. and then years after, government decided to take it to Ilorin. Years after.

Hope we r not digressing anyway.

The road is deadly even after dualisation. curvy and full of trailers heading to the North. it is scary hence people use the other route, and i think it is longer in distance.
That is ridduculous why would the FG consent to building a dual carriage road from Ibadan to Oyo and stop at Oyo, of what economic benefit is that to the nation, the route was meant to hasten and fasting journey time between Northern Cities and Lagos. In the olden days it used to take 2 days to travel from Lagos to Kano, but if this road was in good nick it would take between 9 and 10 hours. That suggestion is very ingenious to say the least let alone it been a fact. I am afraid it that is not true. Take my word.

So many roads were concived in the early 1970's, others that were concived and not built were the Badagry to Sokoto Highway, can you imagine u saying when that road gets to shaki which is a town along Nigeria's western border,  it would be stopped becos it was meant to stop at Shaki.

Like i said sir. Dont believe everything in the newspapers.
The bottom-line is the entire project Ibadan - Ilorin conceived around 1985 has not being completed in 2011. Whether segements have being completed is beside the point. The moral of the story is this project is still on going 21 years after worked bagan on it and the so called completed parts I can swear by mothers name those areas are already falling into dis-repair for lack of mainteanance. What sense does it make if the entire road has being dualised and 75% of it are already un-motorable.

Secondly how come people prefer travelling Lagos-ibadan - Akure-Owo-Lokoja route when going to Abuja INSTEAD of the straight forward Ibadan -Ilorin- Abuja route

Soludo has suddenly become an ardent apostle of Hind-sight Politics, " I was going to sort out the exposure the banks had" we all know hindsight policy makers are no policy makers, Soludo could not have bitten a hand that was turning out Naira note towards his way like water running from a tap. It would take a man selfless to himself and the nation to stop the rut and that mouth watering prospect of making a handsome killing.

Thank God Islamic Sanusi had a diffrent orientation to many Southern Elites who out of not knowing what to do with the excess cash stolen and embezzeled from the nation result to perverse inhibitions, " I am sure we all read how Igbenideion indulge in a sexual tryst with 3  pretty white girls in an hotel room all paid for by money stolen from selling Edo Shares" and how a woman friend Orji Kalu died in his house after excessive exhuation.

On the other hand Aganga should not have answered Soludo since the Finance Minister is the boss of the CBN Governor, he should have left that to Sanusi and Sanusi knows where it hurts when it comes to Soludo.

Secondly Aganga could not have done anything if the Cin C says he needs a certain amount of money for some special projects bearing in mind we are in an election year, and to add salt to the injury the country did not have an administration in place for 3 months between November 09 and Feb 2010,  only God knows what the Taminu's,  Turai's and the Aodooka's of these world have done with our common -wealth during the absence of a substantive President.
Politics › Fayemi Hits The Ground Running In Ekiti State by KnowAll(op): 12:17pm On Jan 31, 2011
Having come to office on the crest of massive will and unprecedented acceptance, Ekiti Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, after his swearing-in as the third Chief Executive of the Fountain of Knowledge had already hit the ground running.

Fayemi knew that the expectations of the people of the state are high and there is need for the people of the state who massively gave him their mandate at the 2007 governorship election and the 2009 rerun election to begin to reap the dividends of democracy.

Indeed, the last one month has been very challenging for the new administration as it settles down to clear the rot left behind by the ousted administration in key sectors of the economy.

The governor and his deputy, Mrs. Funmilayo Olayinka in their various outings in the state have continued to stress that the new administration has not come to take vengeance or witch-hunt anybody but to further the interests of the people.

Fayemi who had played host to various stakeholders in the state which include communities, traditional rulers, religious organizations, and corporate organizations said the focus of his administration are good governance, non-confrontational approach towards resolving conflicts and reconciliation among Ekiti people.

The high rate of abandoned projects left behind by the deposed regime was of utmost concern to Fayemi who had undergone a tour of such projects to ensure that the state is not turned to an abode of white elephants.

This prompted a meeting held by the governor with all government contractors as their activities were reviewed. He charged all the contractors to go back to the site of the projects and ensure that work is completed as early as possible.

One of first assignments of the governor was a visit to the new House of Assembly complex where he ordered the contractor to ensure a speedy completion of the project.

The project, which had reached about 50 per cent completion stage was among the first set of projects awarded by the ousted Segun Oni regime.

Fayemi said the desire of his administration is to ensure that the members of the State House of Assembly enjoy the facilities of the new parliamentary complex noting that the legislature is an important arm of government that must be supported to succeed.

The governor also paid a visit to the site of the new State Secretariat complex. Residents of Ado-Ekiti were happy to see that construction work had resumed on Ado-Ifaki Road, a major highway which leads to other parts of the state and other states of the federation.

The other lane of the road, which had remained untarred since the defunct regime started work on it, is now receiving attention as the stone base had been laid preparatory to its being tarred.

The giant road median is also being laid from the State Hospital area down with the aim of making it a model dual carriageway in the state capital as it obtains in other capitals across the country.

During an on-the-spot visit to various roads in Ado-Ekiti, Fayemi expressed his displeasure at the poor condition of such roads and charged contractors to expedite action on their rehabilitation.

He noted that the roads had become impassable in some areas and caused untold hardship on residents stressing that the immediate rehabilitation of such roads became imperative to alleviate the suffering of the people.

The governor's visit to the various affected spots elicited commendations from residents who had remarked that the filling of potholes and other rehabilitation workbeing done on the roads had brought succour to them.

Unserviceable vehicles are also being removed from the major roads to make them free and safe. To put a stop to slow pace of project execution witnessed during the 42 months of the illegal Oni regime, Fayemi inaugurated a five-man Task Force to monitor all ongoing government projects in the state.

The Task Force code-named "Rapid Action Team" which is headed by Chief Ranti Adebisi is expected to work with the State Transition Committee of the Fayemi-led administration towards ensuring rapid completion of all on-going state projects. ,

Adebisi who described the task of developing the state as a "collective responsibility", pledged the commitment of the members of his team to the success of the Fayemi-Ied administration and the overall progress of the state.

Ogunmola is the Special Adviser to Ekiti State Governor on Media.
Great but, I hope he does not run out of steam thus undecided
Fayemi inaugurated a five-man Task Force to monitor all ongoing government projects in the state.

The Task Force code-named "Rapid Action Team" which is headed by Chief Ranti Adebisi is expected to work with the State Transition Committee of the Fayemi-led administration towards ensuring rapid completion of all on-going state projects.
The above is a great initiatitive I hope the FG can borrow a leaf from the Fayami Govt and INUGURATE a committe like this, who would carryout on the spot assessment & visits on abandoned FG Road Projects all over the Country. I cannot believe that after 18 years of me leaving Naija in the early 1990's the Ibadan- Ilorin dual carriage road has not being completed. huh

Soludo is looking for future political relevance, after a disatrous term in d CBN. One must not lose sight of his above average beginnings in which he help in consolidating our banks but towards d end of his regime probably over- sight or sheer recklessness on his path let d rot dat is visible today to continue unabated without raising or seem to be raising alarm. Personally I think d issue of over-exposure by our banks to d capital Market was one problem Soludo was planning to resolve if he got a re-newal of his contract.

On d same note I would not exonerate him entirely from d delay in tackling the Infesting & dangrous armegeddon dat would have consumed d nation because he was an ardent proponent clamouring for every Nigerian both poor & rich to get on  that dire gravy train of buying shares, why he was still a chief & rather vociferous merchant of doom insisting on clueless & poor Nigerians going down this road to pardition  by buying a falling asset when it was glaringly clear this was doomsday scenerio for many beats my imagination.

Soludo is partially responsible for d kidnappings in d East his prophesy of untold wealth to many Igbo traders who made their money from d hard craft  of buying & selling suddenly jump on this bandwagon of making easy money in d stock Market after all d town cryer for this message of doom was one of theirs.

A middle-aged man, Danlami Ahmed, has been arrested by the police for attempting to rob a new generation bank in Minna, Niger State, with the aid of Juju.

Ahmed was arrested on Thursday after using Juju to beat the bank’s mechanical and human security networks to gain entry into the banking hall.

Saturday Tribune gathered that the suspect who hails from Nassarawa State but was residing in the Sauka Kahuta area of the Niger State capital, was spotted by a bank official in the bulk room packing naira notes into a ‘Ghana must go’ he had brought with him.

However, the bank member, who saw Ahmed taking the money into the bag, reportedly tapped him on the back and asked him what he was doing there.

An alarm was raised, which attracted the security men attached to the bank, leading to his (Ahmed’s) arrest.

When questioned, Ahmed, who had the charms under the dress he wore, allegedly said he had been in the business for some time and that the charm was given to him by his grandfather.

He said with the aid of the charm he had the power to disappear from anywhere and would not be seen while raiding any bank.

The suspect was later led to his Sauka Kahuta residence where the police searched the premises.

A senior police officer who preferred to remain anonymous confirmed the news saying investigations into the matter had commenced.
