Education › Re: B. Sc. vs HND: An Unsettled Case? by kodewrita(m): 7:32am On May 27, 2011 |
Mr Fox: From Topic : Hnd Is Now B.tech Degree In All Nigerian Polytechnics at https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-138041.0.html which relates to this topic I have the following to say.
There has indeed been an unfair treatment by employers who perceived HND as inferior to Bachelors Degree. Here is my feeble attempt to guess a couple of reasons why 1. OND admission required less number of credits than Bachelors 2. A different exam PCE JAMB (easier than UME) is required for admission into ND. 3. Only a Pass in english is required for majority of OND courses. 4. Curriculum of Bachelors is different (not better) but of different objectives from OND and HND 5. University Libraries are better equipped than Polytechnics 6. Academic staff in universities include more Ph.D and Professors (i.e more academic achievement) 7. The Universities do lots of research and relate with academics internationally to keep up with developments 8. Polytechnic, as the name implies, are more technically oriented than universities 9. Universities have some courses that are research based like the education, medicine, agronomy, pharmacy which make the environment charged with too much efficos and grammar which is not required by Polytechnic. 10. Finally, employers know that HND holders have more technical skills than Bachelors holders but their needs in banks oil, telecoms and co, like teller jobs are not that technical and you dont have to be more than a school cert holder to do it, since the job market is full of both Bachelors and HND, first class, 2:1, 2:2, upper credit, lower credit. The companies who dont need your core skills either in engineering or accounting will prefer to employ a Bachelors holder who will speak with their customer, most times represent the company and when necessary take up a higher role in the management of the company. Every staff is a customer support staff. And by the nature of the academic orientation of students from universities, they are able to perform in these non skilled jobs and become professional at them. Speaking plenty grammar.
These 10 reasons are just my own opinion.
I hear now that universities and polytechnics will do the same exam (JAMB) next year and admission into ND will require five credits including maths and english. That is one very good way of setting the standard to same and removing discrimination. What now needs to be done is for the Polytechnics to achieve the same academically charged environment as universities. Lecturers in poly should also achieve Ph.D and do research. And grounds will level. Disrcimination will be removed. Not only in the mind but also in the content of education delivered to students of poly.
I totally condemn the discrimination I have seen in my work place. I dont support it all. I have B.sc from Nigeria plus M.sc from UK and even B.Sc(Nigeria) is discriminated against compared with B.Sc(UK) even within Nigeria. We all suffer it because its a Nigerian problem. thanks for this. let them keep deluding themselves. |

invent or build? thats been available for so long.
building an airframe doesnt cost one million. hobby plane builders do it for much much less. all you want to build is a very small scale model.
My only issue with this project is how you intend to handle layering the solar panels onto the plane and how you intend to handle the fibreglass aspects of the airframe (assuming you build it with a mixture of fibreglass and wood veneer).
I'll advise you to focus on more accessible projects like:
building a solar panel system that tracks the movement of the sun (stepper motor, knowledge of solar movement around equator, some coding and circuits. c'est fini) facing east in the morning, up at noon and east at night.
self tuning TV antenna system. (think this has been done).
remote controlled crane.(? same level as plane? scratch this but just to spark your creativity, i'll leave it there).
***star idea*** coin-operated/currency operated phone charging system(must handle all charger hole sizes and different voltages. Just stick it in, put in the coins and the phone starts charging). {if its too complex to handle, just do something else but plan to make money off this}. |

^^^ looks like they need a new university altogether!!
liaison offices, shopping complex? SOme of those stuffs have been there for a while and they have either been built or in the process of being built. Fact: Bowen actually took over an old Baptist training college and the process has been one of use-demolish/expand-build. What you see on that page is their long-term plan. Besides, there are fund-raising dinners/carol services every year so they do raise money for some of those. They are also building a School of Medicine (thats the major cash burner for them right now). @Musiwa, I'll have to ask friends to post, my pictures are already 3-5 years old. @Blacklion apologies if it was too harsh but its still the truth. Most private universities have less than 1000 students because they only got their licenses within the last 5 years. Bowen, Igbinedion, Babcock and Covenant got theirs around 1995-99 i think. Hence the difference. These schools would have expanded beyond these (especially Covenant with all the winner's chapel cashflow) but they are held back by NUC regulations which only allow 3 faculties for the first 5 years. |
Politics › Re: Private Varsities Seek Public Funds by kodewrita(m): 4:17pm On May 24, 2011 |
blacklion: Is there any private uni in Nigeria with an enrollment in excess of 2, 000 students? As far as I know, most of them have less than 1, 000 students, many even less than 500. You definitely dont know ANYTHING about Nigerian private universities. I daresay you have never been inside one. My graduating class had 1050+ students from 3 faculties (Bowen University). And I recently heard they got two new faculties approved so the schools going to be even bigger. Covenant definitely has as many students too. Same for Babcock (1st Gen private universities). |

zstranger: Why are you shifting the goal post like Kobo?
First thats not the point of this thread. Second, the owners of those private institutions are asking to be allowed to have access to the ETF fund for salary payment and other administrative services. They are fighting for themselves, not speaking on behalf of the students! Kobo is a dear NL friend so I wont retort wildly. I wasnt shifting the goalpost. The idea came and I had to quickly write it down (I do that because creativity is a fickle thing and any seemingly creative ideas need to be quickly fixed so they can be improved or forever lost). I dont think the private schools actually need money, they are simply asking because they feel they should be entitled. 5000 students paying 380k per session translates to 1.9 billion per session. more than enough for their needs. |
Politics › Re: Private Varsities Seek Public Funds by kodewrita(m): 6:57am On May 23, 2011 |
Too late Katsumoto san, I already graduated from a private one. Monthly drips of honey quite huge at the moment. On course to build an ETF-paying entity myself. Katsumoto: Private universities operate a profit model and by the very nature of high fees which they charge, should not receive a kobo from the ETF. If they are unable to operate on that model, then they should fold up.
I am sure you should know the differences between individual and corporate entities. Also, taxes are collected from all entities, both individual and corporate, for the greater good of society. Those taxes will go towards all services but it doesn't mean that all entities will benefit from all benefits. If your dad wants you to benefit from the ETF, then perhaps he should send you to a public university even if a private unviversity would be more beneficial to you. There is always a trade-off.
Besides corporations pay the ETF because they will have a better pool of graduates to recruit from and not because the private universities that CEOs kids attend should be subsidised by the ETF. Arigato. My take is that the government subsidise every student directly at a flat rate. if you now choose to go to a school charging more than that fee, then its your choice. essentially a Bursary fee. And banks should offer student loans too. (CBN can allow this to have much lower rates than actual MRR. probably allow banks to do it out of their normal funds and then charge it back to CBN after loan approval to enable monitoring). |

reindeer: It is simple If they want to get money from the national purse, they should be willing to enrol children from poorer backgrounds the way it is now in the UK If not, make these secondary schools go look for money now abi na by force to open universities? Considering the fact that many of them are owned by politicians and religious bodies, allowing them access to govt money will only worsen our already divided polity. they enrol students from poorer backgrounds who are willing to work to pay for their tuition. Bowen University at a time, had an internal work-to-pay scheme so I know stuff like that exists. Sorry if you couldnt afford it but it still doesnt negate the logic behind their arguments. |

Find one music track and then zone in on it for hours to take my mind off things. Preferably some fighting music like the transformers' soundtrack (Burn it to the ground)/ Naruto soundtrack or Mulan soundtrack.
Stroll out and try to walk as far as I can.
I put off the phones. especially if someone is the cause of it.
I sleep (actually sleeping during the day is usually a serious sign that I am in serious trouble. It means I am trying to sleep away the trouble. Thought I dont do that nowadays. I prefer to attack it than hide from it.)
I surf the web.
I fold all foldables and clean all cleanables. (thats another sign I look out for)

How much does it take to recruit lecturers for humanities courses which require no real infrastructure. Does Accounting, Economics, Sociology require huge infrastructure based on current levels in nigeria? nope. not at our current level.

Politics › Re: Good Guys And Bad Girls: Kelvin Igbodo by kodewrita(m): 1:44pm On May 20, 2011 |
If there was a way to frame this or drag it to the hall of fame, I would. tonte23: Have you noticed that as a single guy in modern day Nigeria, its easier to get a visa out of the country than to find a single girl who is good?
Let me define 'good' as used in this context:
A good guy is a good guy.
A good girl is one with a focus; with a vision and goals; educated, beautiful, fluent in English, witty, God fearing, possesses good culinary skills, has little or no nagging ability, has a great sense of humor, is liberal with the TV remote, dislikes Africa Magic, loves kids, is technologically savvy, etc.
This kind of girl is hard to find. This is because most of these girls are already taken by the bad guys. I don't need to define the bad guys, we all know them.
So that leaves us good guys stranded. A lot of us are still in the 'struggling zone' where we are still putting up in a one-bedroom room or squatting with a friend somewhere. We have a job that is barely keeping us alive and we still know what time to wake up to ensure we don't miss the BRT. Before you judge us and conclude that with such a lifestyle, we still need to struggle more, let me remind you that time waits for no man, especially one whose biological clock is reading '30'. So we decide to find other single ladies who will 'love us the way we are'.
For where?
If you can't afford Brazilian or at least Peruvian, or okay if it’s too bad, Vietnamese hair, forget it! If you can't buy and pay for her Blackberry BIS every month, forget it! If your daily diet is noodles and boiled egg (morning), noodles and pepper (night), forget it! You see, the good guys are in trouble!
We can't do Yahoo-Yahoo because we will surely be caught (we are actually the 'mugus'). We can't push drugs, infact the only thing we've ever pushed is our friends 'jalopy' 504 that operates with the push-and-start mechanism. Our favorite solidarity song is MI's ‘One Naira’, because it gives us hope that someday a 'Waje' will come our way. While we look for one, people like 2face have 5, D'banj is trying to choose, Uti has numerous, it just seems hopeless for us 'good guys'
We have gone to church to look for them, but even in church, some guys are giving N1000 offering, we are giving N500 tithe. No hope for us there! Sister Thelma will ask me after service, “Can you drop me at home after service?" Drop ke? I have already calculated how N50 will take me to Ikeja Along and how I shall leisurely stroll all the way to Toyin Street where I squat.
Then some expect you to take them to the cinemas. Can't we just buy the N150 DVD collection with 7 other movies inside sef, go to my neighbors house and watch? I mean, its money saved. Some expect you to take them out all the time: Chicken Republic, KFC, Tastee Fried Chicken. Is it not THE SAME chicken? Can't we buy one, kill and fry? Pour plenty pepper and enjoy? Buy N60 coke, boil rice and that's it?
I'm not stingy, just prudent!
It’s sad though, but I know that where there's a will, there's a way. There really are no good or bad people, just people in different situations/circumstances, people with different mindsets and beliefs. We just have to find that 'perfect' match. They say "the beautiful ones are not yet born" so there is still hope for you. |

Its pretty easy to point fingers at the non-Lagos SW areas because it is so easy to gather data there.
The southwest is probably the most surveyed portion of nigeria in virtually all areas.
Many more papers have been published on various aspects of life in the southwest than in other areas (i assume).
That gives you guys the excuse to point fingers and make spurious statements. |

@otokx unfortunately the letter of the law does not discriminate between private and public education. it has only been applied as such because of prejudice already on ground.
besides there are way more private primary schools in some places than public ones and it would reach more people that way if it was spread evenly. |

Let him first overcome the generator importers (mostly from the south-east) and provide the east with Power and IPP projects.
Let him overcome the transporters (Ifesinachi, Ekene Dili Chukwu, Bob Izua, Agofure) by building a rail line to connect port harcourt to lagos (not omitting Enugu, and Owerri).
Let him take over the Calabar/Tinapa FTZ and make it profitable instead of the cash drain it is.
Finally, He should convince his brothers in the creeks to stop kidnapping non-indigenous entrepreneurs. |
