platinumnk:Pls explain the bolded phrase. What does it really take to "look from abroad" ?? The issue is whether you are genuine or not, some people will hate. Especially those who knew you before you left naija, even if you left 20yrs ago. My beef is with the haters. And right, it only makes sense to try to adapt wherever you are - the same reason why some poeple try to speak like their hosts. |
Londoner, do you EVER have any positive thing to say about men . . . do you have a father and / or brother . . . are your parents together or divorced?? These are simple and innocent questions. |
africhika:I bet if you come to Nigeria (with a naija name) some people will say you are faking it or ur not proud of ur native land. that's life though |
platinumnk:It aint supposed to - we are the ones who made it a big deal. Posts like this also. I know there is some bad belle behind this thread somewhere somewhere. May be the girl don steal her bobo. |
A friend of mine went for an interview recently in Lagos - he'd lived and worked in Colorado for 12yrs so of course some of a pronounciations and spellings were a little bit different from the british english we grew up with in Nigeria. During the interview, someone on the panel kept picking on him for the way he was talking and some spellings on his resume - some words were missing the letter 'u' and the date format was obviously different. Although he got the offer, this friend was frustrated during the interview process. Imagine now having to work with that panel person. This samething happens globally, not only in Nigeria. I guess that's why I'm kind of pissed at such people who tend to frustrate those who want to return home. - if you have lived outside of ur native land for several years, somethings are bound to change, regardless of where that is. I agree some people form but I just had to put it out there that it's not everyone Some d it out of necessity. When I am at work, I talk / write in such a way that my colleagues can understand but when I'm with my own people. leave story. I dont even speak english in my house anyway - cos that is the only way I can get my child to speak my native language. peace to all. |
If you are in the business of talking and you work with foreigners who speak with an accent different from yours, it is either you are able to communicate efficiently with people or you get fired. In the process of trying to do this, your pronounciations will definately begin to change after a while, regardless of how old you are (although it might be tougher for older folks). Now imagine being in this kinda job for several years, yes, you may start talking with an accent that might be not as perfect as the indigenes'. So then when you return to ur native country after sevral years, people tend to think you are posing and that is why most people choose to speak yoruba / igbo so as not to hear some of the rubbish being rolled out here. But if you are in a foreign land and ur job has little or no interaction with other people, then ur dictations might not change. Now the people who lived in naija all their lives watch movies and of course wannt to talk like their favorites actors in the western world. And when we think about it, dont we all in one way or another ?? Whether you choose to accept it or not, we all tend to present ourselves in a positive way - a way the listener will be able to easily understand and appreciate. I dont hear you complain about Paul Adefarasin - he talks that way to expand his crowd. Haters. |
I worry about this everyday. we have misplaced priorities in my country. Like the poster rightly said, the person is dead!!! I see people go into debt to bury their dead, throw large parties and close down roads just to show off an claim the dead was buried the right way. But the person is DEAD!! These are the same people who never really took care of that person before they died anyway. Some use that opportunity to make money by selling 'uniforms' / aso-ebi at highly inflated prices to people who truly cannot afford it but have no choice. Of course stealing is in Nigeria to stay!! It is high time we get rid of some of these devilish cultural practices and tradition. |
Unfortunately, this poster sounds like he wants to show off when he gets to naija - so he's most likely bound to be robbed. Whether we accept it or not, Nigeria is an unsafe country for anyone - diasporian or not. Coming from abroad, there are places you will go to in Nigeria and you will look like a poor man and there are also places where you'll go and you'll be the local champion. There is so much wealth in Nigeria but is it only accessible to less than 5% of the population - the remaining 95% do anything to survive, some including stealing. You'll go into clubs with all your foreign cash and you cannot even afford a glass of wine in Nigeria - there is so much pressure to be rich and oppress like several people are oppresed daily in Lagos. that's why there will always be stealing in that country. If you keep ur head down you will be fine. but if you are trying to be a star, you will come back broke and penniless. Cos you will not be able keep up with Lagosians when spending money. And the remaining masses you can afford to oppress will steal your money. |

smasher1:This is not a bad idea at all. The good thing is you can plan your work week, work only when you want to (outside of your job) and still put in more hours to make some extra dough when you need to. Compare that to working in a bank in which you got almost no life. I know guys here in the states who have professional jobs but still tutor kids on a personal level not only to make some extra bucks but also because of their love for teaching. |
mekk:Teaching surely ought to be a respectable and lovely profession. But what if it cannot put food on your table. Your lines were true once upon a time in Nigeria, maybe in 80s and earlier. My dad is a retired high school principal . . worked back in the 70s and 80s because he felt he had to give back to his community. He was able to do everything his mates did . . and maybe even more. That was when my country was good. But now, being a teacher is like a curse - even high school drop-outs now teach in secondary schools! You cannot survive on the irregular salary without selling handouts (in secondary school now o). So I heard. Nigeria is all about money now unfortunately. Forget patriotism cos the leaders dont even care about you! |

Only in Nigeria

Most of the pictures posted above are not real. C'mon! |
davidif:I meant she is my sole beneficiary and I trust her to take care of our children. |
The ladies choosing their kids are those from polygamous or failed marriages. They expect the same from their husbands. Sorry lots. Then they wonder why these men go out to chase other women. Thank God I shall never have to choose. All I have belongs to my wife. |
Only in Lagos . .

spikedcylinder: spikedcylinder:Big boy now o, still potty training though ![]() Check ur yahoo mailbox . .just sent some of his pictures there. |
Spikybaby, Been good ojare . . see ur updates on facebook so I know you are doing ok as well. Actually been pleasant being an observer here . . .but I just had to contribute to this funny thread . .am sure everyone will have a story to tell about Lagos. |
Only in Lagos was my 504's petrol hose removed in heavy traffic - the car stopped right in front of the culprits and they drained my pockets while trying to 'help' resolve the problem before they eventually 'discovered' that I'd run outta fuel. They had collected all I had so they gave me 20naira to go buy petrol. The same way only in Lagos will you be happy that you successfully got some money back from a police officer . . after bribing him! Only in Lagos! |
Only in Lagos can you point to the live fish to be used to make ur pepper soup. ______ Only in that crazy place will you see 'correct' babe bring out her plastic bowl to buy ewa agayin plus dodo and dundu with stew. |
Paroh_frey: . that may be true. But I am referring to the inferiors who cannot walk up to white girls until they make millons . . and then start misbehaving. |
What is wrong with these 'successful' black men? they make a little bit of millions and start chasing their 'trophy' white girls. It is up to 10 girls and counting for Tiger Woods now and NONE is black - Self-denial and Inferiority complex in my opinion. These guys are just plain stupid. Shows they were never happy to be black anyway and believe a black girls are not good enough for them once they get up there. I know black girls often come with a lot of drama and noone is complaining about them marrying their 'trophy' white girl, but cheating with multitudes of white girls speaks great volumes - we all know most of these girls are just looking for the perfect opportunity to get their movies / books deals and get on reality tv shows. I aint supporting cheating but most smart guys cheat with black girls cos ur secret is safe most of the time! Tiger Woods has denied being black at every opportunity . . . . but now black people are the only ones who will truly come to his support, cos the whitis are going to keep on sitting on this and milk it for as long as possible. Maybe now he will come to his racial senses. You cannot run from your true self despite ur status and position. This is not a racial piece. . . opinions are welcome. |
Sebi na you dey find trophy girlfriend at all cost ![]() Deal with it. |
Abeg, una help me find this guy? he promised to bring me back my change after I sprayed him - na so he run comot with my money. He tell me say he get marble-granite bed in his house on Victoria Island - not too far from the truth ![]() Pls report to the bar beach police station if you see him. This one no be joke o!

This is a global thing. Even newspapers in the U.S dont sell as much anymore since you can catch your news on the Internet or TV. It is the nasty tabloids (with their juicy gossips, sometimes unreal) that still sell up till today. So pls stop crucifying the newspapers in Nigeria. hyprocrites !! Let's face it, most people like you all want to read gossips and lies, go and ask city people magazine. Well behaved people rarely make the news - and history. Go figure. |
I am tripping here. NEPA took light so they fireworks could show well - they no even care say match never finish up Naija!! |
